Smersh – The Beat From 20,000 Fathoms
Still on a Smersh kick. This record is a 1986 release on RRRecords. It is a kind of sampler of tracks from their cassette only releases at the time with three new tunes thrown in for good measure.
It gives the people what they want Leftfield Synthpunk tinged Industrial. I’m into it.

A teacher in Crimea is forced to apologize for singing Ukrainian songs
Linara Rasulova, a chemistry teacher, sang Chervona Kalyna and the Ukrainian anthem for her students. She also wrote Crimea is Ukraine on social media. The Crimean Smersh took notice of this. As is their custom when anyone does anything Ukrainian in Crimea, they burst into her home and forced her to apologize under a portrait of Putin.
By the next day, she is fired.

songs - (I find this hard to watch because the children begin singing the Russian Anthem over her)

If you're a James Bond fan, the word SMERSH (СМЕРШ) may look familiar. If you're a little rusty with 007 lore, check this out.
SMERSH was Stalin's military counterintelligence agency which eventually became part of the KGB – the predecessor to Russia's FSB.
So Vladimir Putin, a former lieutenant colonel in the KGB, is reviving SMERSH.
Russia has revived SMERSH, a Stalin-era spy hunting organization, in parts of Ukraine that were illegally annexed and are partially under the control of Kremlin forces, a Russian politician and Kremlin propagandist announced Sunday. Andrey Gurulyov, a Russian parliament (Duma) member and former military commander, made the remarks during an appearance on state television channel Russia-1, an excerpt of which was posted to his Telegram channel. SMERSH, an acronym for the Russian words "death to spies"—"smert" meaning death and "shpionam" meaning spies—was the name of an organization formed by Soviet leader Josef Stalin. It was tasked with the elimination of anti-communist activity during World War II. "We talked about SMERSH, today we created a department that works in approximately the same way in new territories," said Gurulyov, referring to the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.
Those recent Ukrainian attacks on Russian railroad infrastructure in Siberia and the Russian Far East possibly had something to do with the timing of the SMERSH reboot.
The organization, notorious for its brutality, was behind the arrest, torture and execution of thousands of people, including any its own agents suspected of sabotage, desertion, or disloyalty. However, the group prevented many attempts on the lives of top Soviet officials, including Stalin himself, Russian news outlet Lenta reported. Gurulyov said a similar structure should also operate once again in Russia. "Today they are trying to interfere with [our operations in non-frontline areas]. I talked to the Far East, where we have nuclear submarines and [where] our ships [are] based. They may also be in danger, so we need to approach protection issues a little differently," the politician said.
By "differently", Gurulyov likely means more ruthlessly. People in Russia have already gotten visits from the police for having blue and yellow curtains in their windows.

Anyone who has seen how russia treats its prisoners isn't shocked at the treatment of the terror attack suspects. It's is a common pattern: torture someone then film their "confession". Similar things are done to Russian political prisoners, foreign nationals, Ukrainian prisoners of war, Ukrainian civilians..... with other variations, sometimes not filmed, sometimes even worse torture, sometimes sexual violence...

at some point I'm going to have to rewatch the craig casino royale movie to talk more in depth about the clearly most interesting discrepancy between the novel and the movie (the two versions of vesper and what they say about the social and political climates of the 50s and the 2000s), but right now I'm just lying here, spinning this one line in my mind. because after bond is called into her room by the owner of the hotel and he tries to wake her and verifies to himself that she's committed suicide, he thinks, "she must have arranged for a call to be made to her room quite early so I wouldn't be the one to find her." I've been obsessing over that since I read it. it's so interesting in conversation with how vesper dies in the movie adaptation, too; in front of bond's eyes and despite his best efforts. the bond of the movie adaptation already knows that she betrayed him; that she's been in love with someone else the whole time; the bond of the novel only finds out when he reads her suicide note. I can't stop thinking about the way the two vespers were conversely granted and denied agency in their own stories and how that reflects in the methods of their deaths.

007, MI6 has come across an interagency memorandum buried since the 1970s in regards to the purportedly Hungarian Count Vladimir Akula, if there is any proof to the memorandum's speculation he has been transferring large landownings, precious gems, Soviet stockpiles of weapons through frankly byzantine corporate shell transfers. It is the opinion of the crown that he could be linked to SMERSH. You will need to infiltrate his masquerade ball held in his manor in Wallachia on Walpurgis night to ascertain such details. Cover negotiable. License to kill reinstated.

Casino Royale: A James Bond Novel by Ian Fleming, narrated by Richard, will be released on Google Play and Kobo on March 26, 2024.
Synopsis: James Bond Plays A Deadly Game Of Chance In Ian Fleming’s Legendary First 007 Novel.
“Le Chiffre” is a ruthless operative and the accountant for a soviet SMERSH cell in France, but he’s on the verge of disaster after gambling away his client’s money. Taking the last of his stash, he lures a dozen wealthy players to a high-stakes baccarat game, hoping to hustle his way whole.
The British Secret Service would like to see this red thorn plucked from the hide of Europe, and sends their best card sharp, James Bond, to bankrupt Le Chiffre for good.
With the cards running against him and SMERSH operatives threatening to kill him and his beautiful ally, Vesper Lynd, 007 needs his luck to turn before he wagers away their lives.

Sevastopol Smersh makes a year-end video of 2023 "successes".
they say we're afraid of them. There may be fear. but more overpowering is disgust at what you are. The sheer pettiness of attacking people who merely sing, speak, post on social media. It shows the paltriness of what russia has to offer-- it's you who's afraid of mere words, trying to suppress thoughts like little wannabe dictators.
We despise you and want no part of your russian microcosm that survives on fear, brutality, humiliation. All sane and free people hate everything you are, and your time is coming.
all who speak up for Ukraine are free in their hearts, and Crimea will be free.
and free people will give you justice.

007 Fest 2023 - Headcanons!
Run out the guns, it's headcanon time! Prepare for barrage! (and my first post, so forgive me if I make a few mistakes, and it's a bit late due to my personal schedule)
Bond Headcanons
James Bond is not a codename. Quite frankly, I've never subscribed to this theory. I've always believed that we jump to a slightly different universe with every actor switch. Each universe shares vaguely the same series of events, with certain commonalities. Such as…
Every film Bond has lost their Tracy, except (maybe) Connery and Craig. Moore still visits his Tracy's grave, Dalton's was mentioned to have been married in LTK. Brosnan we never know flat out, but remember - "Or if you find forgiveness in the arms of those willing women, for all the dead ones you failed to protect…" Connery represents and interesting scenario. Diamonds are Forever can be read in two ways - either Bond is out Spectre-hunting after You Only Live Twice to catch the remains of what remains of Spectre, or he's on the warpath after Tracy died in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. For the sake of this theory, let's say that the latter scenario is canon.
Brosnan's Bond used to have unlimited spending money, but then Dench!M cut the funding, hence her nickname of evil queen of numbers This is something that has some basis in the Fleming books. Bond in Casino Royale is allowed to spend exorbitant amounts of money on the Secret Service's tab - millions of francs that is. Despite the fact that in the 50s 1 pound meant 13 francs, this still constitutes a hefty amount. I remember reading that novel!Bond basically has an unlimited budget in a guidebook. I have a feeling this is similar in the movies - after all, I doubt even a RN commander's pension could afford the hundreds of thousands in monies Bond is bound to lose in the movies. Of course, in Brosnan!Bond's timeline, I have a feeling Dench!M ended up putting an end to that little scenario.
There was no Cuban Missile Crisis in the Fleming books. Rather, Operation Thunderball was the "big nuclear scare that defined the Cold War". In the movies, it's largely kept under wraps, but in the book, it eventually goes public by the end of the story. Of course, the loss of two atomic bombs in the Caribbean may have convinced certain figures in the Soviet Union that keeping their nukes in such an area would be… disastrous to say the least. So with that in mind, they decided not to bite the bullet and kept Cuba nuke-free.
SMERSH was kept around specifically to counter the OO Section in the books. SMERSH in real life was disassembled in 1946, whereupon the MGB took on its counter-intelligence duties before reformatting into the KGB in 1954. We know in later books, specifically The Man With the Golden Gun and Octopussy and the Living Daylights, that the KGB does exist in the Fleming books. However, considering how more proactive the British Secret Service is, especially with the OO section, I would hazard a guess that SMERSH was kept around specifically to combat them, at least until the KGB came into existence (which then absorbed it).
Brosnan's Lleweylln!Q did retire… He took his fishing boat to Wales and lived out the rest of his days somewhere in the countryside where they only speak Welsh (a little something @emiliasilverova and I cooked up a few years ago)
Kincade is (or at least was) married to May Maxwell For those of you who don't know, May Maxwell is Book!Bond's Scottish housekeeper. In between assignments, she and Kincade stay up in Skyfall, before Bond summons her to look after his flat until he returns. Sadly, perhaps the reason we don't see her in Craig!Bond's run is that she may have passed away at some point.
Blofeld was always a megalomaniac, but kept that under wraps... until Bond drove him over the edge
One major line of thinking I remember when I watched Tim Burton's Batman movies is that Batman is always just one step behind his villains in the crazy department, with his morals relatively intact. Conversely, we see Blofeld acting like an absolute machine in Thunderball (and all his appearances in the movies before YOLT), but when Bond foiled his plots, he slowly began to lose it. This gave way into him being more expressive, megalomanaical, and downright unconventional (biological warfare, suicide gardens, and diamond lasers) as time goes on. After all, how would YOU process your hundred-million-dollar master plans going up in smoke at the hands of a suave secret agent who always gets away with it?
Bond's favorite book is Treasure Island
John Gardner mentioned that Robert Louis Stevenson was Bond's favorite author. And with the latter writing a sea story that stars a young orphan named James, who gets involved in some epic swashbuckling adventures, it just feels right.

literally just copy-pasting significant portions of From Russia With Love into tumblr because i love piracy and scary women.
It was said that Rosa Klebb would let no torturing take place without her. There was a blood-spattered smock in her office, and a low camp-stool, and they said that when she was seen scurrying through the basement passages dressed in the smock and with the stool in her hand, the word would go round, and even the workers in SMERSH would hush their words and bend low over their papers--perhaps even cross their fingers in their pockets--until she was reported back in her room. For, or so they whispered, she would take the camp-stool and draw it up close below the face of the man or woman that hung down over the edge of the interrogation table. Then she would squat down on the stool and look into the face and quietly say 'No1' or 'No10' or 'No25' and the inquisitors would know what she meant and they would begin. And she would watch the eyes in the face a few inches away from hers and breathe in the screams as if they were perfume. And, depending on the eyes, she would quietly change the torture, and say 'Now No36' or 'Now No64' and the inquisitors would do something else. As the courage and resistance seeped out of the eyes, and they began to weaken and beseech, she would start cooing softly. 'There, there my dove. Talk to me, my pretty one, and it will stop. It hurts. Ah me, it hurts so, my child. And one is so tired of the pain. One would like it to stop, and to be able to lie down in peace, and for it never to begin again. Your mother is here beside you, only waiting to stop the pain. She has a nice soft cosy bed all ready for you to sleep on and forget, forget, forget. Speak,' she would whisper lovingly. 'You have only to speak and you will have peace and no more pain.' If the eyes still resisted, the cooing would start again. 'But you are foolish, my pretty one. Oh so foolish. This pain is nothing. Nothing! You don't believe me, my little dove? Well then, your mother must try a little, but only a very little, of No87.' And the interrogators would hear and change their instruments and their aim, and she would squat there and watch the life slowly ebbing from the eyes until she had to speak loudly into the ear of the person or the words would not reach the brain. But it was seldom, so they said, that the person had the will to travel far along SMERSH's road of pain, let alone to the end, and, when the soft voice promised peace, it nearly always won, for somehow Rosa Klebb knew from the eyes the moment when the adult had been broken down into a child crying for its mother. And she provided the image of the mother and melted the spirit where the harsh words of a man would have toughened it. Then, after yet another suspect had been broken, Rosa Klebb would go back down the passage with her camp-stool and take off her newly soiled smock and get back to her work and the word would go round that all was over and normal activity would come back to the basement.
