What if it was easier? What if the world was kind? (Babe wake up, new rain world au just dropped!)
Characters, from left to right:
The Chieftain / The Harmonic / The Quandary / The Messenger / The Artificer
under the cut is more info for the au!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Basically, Arti didn’t have pups for a while. She left her colony at a young age to adventure, and eventually joined the scavenger colony on top of 5p. There she met the Chieftain, and they fell in love. She ended up ruling beside him,
Their first kid was The Quandary. A scug-scav hybrid.
Then, they adopted two others -
The Harmonic, a little scug who loved to sing and dance. They were a failed purposed organism; made with the idea of having wings, but the webbing never developed, leaving them with weird protrusions out of their paws. This leaves them with poor balance and mobility; and yet? They dance anyway.
And The Messenger, an orphaned scav from far away. They’re inseparable with the Harmonic - the two have been wandering for a long time, keeping together. Strength in numbers, after all. They’ve been titled the messenger because they’ve traveled far, much like the messenger scugs before them - plus, maybe they just like telling people things.
^plus some fun worldbuilding
Watched my friend @cappycapital play Rainworld with a slugpup 😭
The first round the slugpup wouldn't let go and they couldn't progress at all. The next one the slugpup kept backflipping in a loop until my friend bonked them with a rock and dragged them to the exit
I imagine arti’s pups were as fluffy as a sea otter pup when they were smaller (sort of like this https://youtu.be/Yl6zZEHBHwE?si=7J1iMqCuy3_B23hW)
Yes, they were very very fluffy! In these they are supposed to be just a few days old, small and defenseless squeaking cotton balls...
Newborn pups would stay in a shelter until strong enough to latch onto their parents, who would guard the surroundings and stay close until then, which is probably a lot easier when you're not a single parent...
Below I put a newborn pup in the height chart right next to Arti, the second scug in the line is also one of her pups, but older, and the first scug is an average slugpup of the same age.
Also that is the cutest video I've seen this year oh my god...
I love how you drew baby hunter. Would it be rude to request more baby hunter? :3
It is never rude to request more baby hunter! Please request baby hunter!
Poor NSH has to deal with Hunter going through their terrible twos and teenage years every several years lol.
A quick little general slugcat headcanon (featuring a not-so quick drawing to go with it)!
Slugpups have a habit of riding on their parents' tails, kinda like how human kids sometimes cling to their parents' legs! However, for slugcats it's not just for fun, but actually a somewhat instinctive behavior that provides some utility in allowing the parents to carry their kids around more easily when they're small and can't keep up as well on their own. Since slugcats naturally drag their tails — the tail's inherent thickness and large fat stores make it too heavy to lift off the ground all the time — it doesn't really hurt or hinder the parents' movement much, and so is generally pretty efficient when traveling with pups, especially for couples with larger or multiple litters to care for.
Besides that, young slugpups may ride on their parents' backs (usually with the parent walking on all fours in this case), sitting on their shoulders, or just straight-up being carried in their arms, though the final is generally the most difficult option. Once they're big enough they usually walk beside, holding one parent's hand until they're trusted to not stray too far.
Honestly this whole headcanon is pretty much just an extension of this from Survivor/Monk intro:
