Demon Girl Next Door Chapter 89 Review

I’m back to talking about one of my favorite series ever, Demon Girl Next Door / Machikado Mazoku. If you didn’t see my post giving my thoughts about Demon Girl Next Door as a whole back in September of last year, please check that out! I’m keeping the promise I made there of doing a post on each chapter of going forward. I’m very happy to finally be writing about chapter 89 of Demon Girl Next Door. There will be spoilers and this post is largely written chronologically with the chapter.

This chapter gets right back into the most recent plot development, which is Shamiko wanting to dive into Anri’s memories to obtain the family recipe that was lost in the fire. I’m very happy we are getting a lot more focus on Anri and getting introduced to her family. I’ve always really liked her as a minor character. She fits in perfectly with the cast as she is an eccentric weirdo like everyone else, but in a more normal flavor. She can be silly and gung ho with the weird things in this story that you’d think a normal person wouldn’t, but has more normal reactions and information. She is the most helpful for Shamiko navigating social situations. I think she helps keep things grounded while still contributing to the silly energy of the story. But who knows, that grounded normalcy may be changing in the future based on what we learn here.

We’ve seen Shamiko’s abilities grow a lot in recent chapters. The most notable new one that is mentioned in this chapter is that Shamiko can now mend wounds, including broken bones. This is a pretty big deal, giving her a new way to be helpful to the people around her in a way only she can. Recent developments shown in this chapter are important and I'll get more into how great of a character Shamiko is later in the post.

Shamiko is such a caring girlfriend, making sure Momo eats properly while she is gone. I still love these two and they are the only couple I go full shipper with.

Some of the magical side of things is actually pretty complicated. Sion’s thing as a book demon got brought up here, which I will honestly say I do not get very well. I need to re-look at the arc that focused on her sometime and try to understand it better. I feel her purpose recently has largely been to give cryptic information that is not as helpful as it could be, when we know that she is or at least more knowledgeable about the wider story but doesn’t give us all that info. I don’t dislike her as a character, but I don’t love the way she is being used. It’s pretty much my only criticism of the series right now, and it’s hard to describe why she just doesn’t vibe with me. I think I just don’t like feeling that information is being withheld for no good reason. It’s not a problem of severe note, and maybe if I understand her better than I'll fully see a good reason.

Oh boy this is officially our 2nd foray into proper horror in this series. A meat grinder is a good choice for the family of butchers. Those shots are genuinely creepy and well done, I’m terrified but excited to get more. The horror works especially well because of how long we have had with the series being very wholesome and cutesy. The juxtaposition works very well, so we will see if it continues to work well as we get more scary content. I'm confident it will.

We’re getting some serious lore here. It looks like this story involves the Russo-Japanese war, which I assume is mirroring the real life one. We also learned that demons participated in that war. If I remember correctly Momo was found by Sakura at a Russian facility and spoke Russian when Sakura approached her. So the Russo-Japanese war may have been the event that led to Sakura finding Momo. The old picture mentions Shirosawa which gives the story an avenue to how we can hear another account about this event. A big question going forward is how this factors into the conflict between demons and the light clan + magical girls. Were there demons and magical girls fighting together on both sides of wars? Or is it more in line with each faction being on one side? Is the world at large as aware of and blasé about magical stuff as Tama City is? It looks like we will see more into how magical beings have played into politics, and likely get more into detail about the conflict between the demons and light clan. This is some heavy stuff, showing how the series is maturing into taking itself seriously and has much more to say than just being wholesome and funny. I love the more serious directions it’s taken and hope it continues to feel well balanced with the wholesomeness we all love.

In terms of what this means for Anri, it’s pretty complicated and hard to say right now. The issue in the family Sion mentioned is clearly about the darkness that came in at the end. The family must be under some kind of memory shenanigans. Right before they went into Anri’s home she says that she has a large family. But when they are eating at the table she states that they are a two child family, which totals at 4 people. That is not a large family by normal standards, that’s exactly average. Lilith’s “I see” response is likely her picking up on this. The table is also set in front of those chairs which is strange. When Shamiko goes into the dream we get to see more of the family tree, which I will admit I am not great at reading. But it’s clear that there are 3 siblings who are being blocked out from memory due to some terrible event.

The ending to the dream dive is very rough for Shamiko. Shamiko started off being incapable and incompetent whose failures are mostly played for laughs. But it becomes clear that her weakness and lack of skills gave her issues of inadequacy. I think this stems largely from her long state of being physically weak and ill, along with her time of health where she generally appears as pretty stupid and unfit. We even get reminded of this idea in this chapter through the joke of Anri’s little brother only knowing her as losing and crying a lot. We saw these feelings showcased a lot with her initial interactions with Momo. Such as her getting angry over being looked down on and pitied, and thrusting herself into situations she is not prepared for like fighting Momo in desperation to prove herself. Over the course of the story we have seen her struggle and grow into a more confident and capable person. She got many genuine wins due to her own way of thinking and capabilities, such as defeating Sakura’s minion, freeing Ugallu, and most recently fixing Anri’s broken bone. She has grown to be much more secure with herself, but deep down she still has issues of inadequacy. This coupled with her desire to help people after seeing the darkness inside Anri, makes her feel like she did not succeed here even though she still completed her mission of getting the recipe. Shamiko deeply cares about helping others, likely due to her own past weakness, so when she is presented with the opportunity to help she puts everything else aside to focus on that. And she is still harsh on herself, calling herself a failure for not being able to help in a situation she just found out about. It’s details like this that makes Shamiko feel like such a realized and endearing character.

I’m sure it won’t be long before Momo finds out about all this. She is quite perceptive, so I’m not too surprised that she would know that Anri usually sleeps early. We have seen her notice people’s minor behaviors to a surprising degree, such as when she mapped out how Shamiko’s tail portrays her emotions. It’s also nice to see that Shamiko also does not expect the deception to go on long, showing how well she knows her magical girlfriend. They’ve been close for awhile now and I believe the series does a great job of showing the growing understanding between them. They still have some conflicts but they know each other very well. This is one of the reasons why they are such a great couple. I trust that once she finds out she will help Shamiko get through this.

I’m glad the first chapter we got in awhile is a meaty one! Absolutely worth the wait! I’m very interested to see how the story develops from here. And I do want to end by saying that if you love the series as much as I do, I highly encourage buying the manga and anime DVDs. It’s the best way to support the series. I’m not trying to guilt trip anyone, I just believe it’s best to monetarily support the media you truly care about when you can in addition to talking about how awesome it is online. Most of the manga is available in English already.

It wasn't everyday that Sion received a love confession. When a certain pink letter adorned with pink hearts made its way to his desk, his fellow guildmates didn't hesitate to butt into his business and tease him for getting a love letter. Sion, at first, thought it was a silly prank set up by someone up to mischief but once he opened the letter he couldn't help but realize that an actual person took their time writing this to him with all of their sincerity and feelings.

You weren't exactly the best person when it comes to confessing. The only reason why you resorted to giving Sion a love letter instead of telling him upfront was because you were unbelievably shy — you didn't know if you could confess to him without freezing up. So you decided to write him a love letter with a little twist. It was written in a way that encouraged him to find the person behind the "anonymous" pen name written in the letter. Like a game of some sorts.

You would leave him more letters after the last one, all with hints pointing toward your true identity if he even cared to look. You were hoping that there was a part of him that wanted to look for you, to figure out the person behind the letters. That would show that, at least, he cares. Though what you didn't expect was his guildmates joining the little search.

It wasn't long before they managed to track you down even with your best efforts and you were forced to confront Sion about the letters. You felt as if your heart was about to burst as your legs threatened to give in out of nervousness as you anxiously waited for his words. What was he going to say? Did he find it annoying? Did it bother him? Oh, but what if—

"Ahem, uh, about those letters" Sion started, looking away with a bashful expression as he crossed his arms together. "They were... nice to read. Unfortunately, I don't think I can accept your affection with the way I am right now but... W-Would you allow me to get to know you properly? Without the letters, of course! I'll be seeing you face-to-face and get to know you better."

It was safe to say that after that incident, the both of you got to know each other better and even managed to become lovers at the end.

EXTE: Hair Extensions

Today we'll be talking about a movie by Sion Sono - one of the rare directors that both fully indulges in schlock, while also having his movies contain messages, likeable 3-dimensional characters and just generally being good. You know, like your Tarantinos or Takashi Miikes.

EXTE tackles some difficult topics while also being completely over the top at other times, and for that reason I'll give two content warnings right out of the gate:

1: The movie contains a very realistic portrayal of a mother physically and mentally abusing her young daughter. I will not be showing any of that here.

2: The movie contains tons of disturbing gross-out body stuff - specifically long hair supernaturally growing places that it shouldn't, such as out of the eyes, out of wounds and from under fingernails. I will absolutely be showing a bunch of that in this post.

A dead woman is found in a shipping container filled with hair for use in the production of hair extensions. It seems that she was the victim of human trafficking, and as we later learn, human experimentation.

The corpse gets send to the police's forensic lab/morgue, where it falls into the hands of a creepy mortician with a hair fetish, who has secretly been cutting the hair of dead women for his own collection.

This guy gives some real cartoony mad scientist vibes, which are at odds with the very real life issues that the central protagonists of the movie are dealing with, causing a sorta surreal feeling to the entire thing.

Our protagonist is Yuko, a hair-stylist in training - as she explains herself in a fully in-universe diagetic exposition scene, in which she talks about herself in the third person because she saw someone do that in a TV show the other day and thought it was fun.

Yuki has recently moved out from a bad living situation with her abusive sister, and is now living together with a roommate who aims to become a professional dancer. Yuki herself has dreamt of becoming a hair stylist since she was a little girl, and is working hard towards achieving that dream. The hair salon she is an apprentice at has a big workshop in a few days, where she and her colleagues will have to show if they have what it takes - but first they will have to find models.

Meanwhile creepy hair fetishist guy notices that the corpse from the hair container is growing hair really quickly... And from places where you don't normally grow hair. So he smuggles her home to his private hair shrines, where he starts talking to her and eventually cutting her hair.

Back at Yuki's place, a child has shown up at the doorstop. It's her niece Mami, whom her sister has just left there while she does her own thing in some shady nightclub.

Yuki soon realises that Mami, much like herself, has been abused by her sister, and ends up confronting and standing up to her sister, to allow Mami to live safely with her and her roommate instead.

Of course creepy hair fetishist guy starts selling hair extensions made form hair that he has cut off from the weird corpse that supernaturally grows hair. He visits various small hair salons who are all amazed at the free samples he gives them.

When worn, these extensions start leading to... Accidents...

The hair extensions seem to have a life on their own - and a terrible anger that starts taking root...

Speaking of taking root...

It doesn't take long before the hair extensions have also found their way to Yuki's hair salon - and she's about to have to pick a model for her big test! Luckily she has a very wholesome bonding experience with Mami...

And I think I'll just leave things there. I very much enjoyed EXTE. It's genuinely disturbing while also being slightly silly. Give it a watch this Halloween!

From an AGES old prompt based on my silly sleepover talk comes another, much earlier talk of the same vein: Boosted Octopus. This is why these two are best friends. Only content warnings are the usual Kingsley cursing and slightly macabre thoughts about the murderous advantages of the Octopus.

“Sides….. Sides!” Charge yells, trying to get your attention and knowing better than to tap you for it.

“Mm?” It’s barely a reply, as you’re busy trying to stuff your bleeding nose with more tissue paper.

“You good?“

There’s a look of genuine concern in his face but you brush it off with a waved hand.

“Mhm.”

“That’s so reassuring, thank you,” he chides in a sarcastic tone.

A shrug is all he gets in return as you’re busy balancing the barely-staunched flow while trying to keep your face hidden. Again, you’re thankful you chose most of your mask to be black.

“Fine, act tough—I’m not okay. I feel like I got beat down by eight fists at once.”

And he looks it. You, however, really aren’t bothered by the beat down: the pain is a dull ache to most things you’ve experienced, and bruises heal better than broken bones. Besides, the two of you gave better than you took. The Sharkinator lying unconscious and fried at your feet has proven that.

With a roll of your shoulders, you let your mask stick back down and turn your whole body Charge’s way. Sure, he’s given you a name but it’s not like you’re going to use it. Not when you’ve already figured out how smug he gets when you do any little thing his way: he may as well have done a dance when you agreed to give him a pager and phone number he could reach you with for hero situations.

You refocus and realise he’s still talking at you—to you—so you do your best to catch up. Friendships, real ones—not the fucked up thing you’re used to, take two to make it work.

“—I mean, mierda, could you imagine that? That’d be the worst thing we’ve fought yet! Emphasis being on yet.”

“Hm?” There’s genuine confusion in that noise.

“A boosted octopus! Getting actually hit eight times at once by a tentacled nightmare! …You think we could take it?”

You’d be lying if you said you weren’t wholly confused, but even more so if you said you weren’t intrigued. Still no fucking idea where this came from though, exactly how hard was he hit?

“Well,” you hesitate, letting the thoughts coalesce into sentences you can string together with as few words as possible. If you speak slowly and carefully enough you might be able to get through it spotlessly. “…what k-kind of o-o-octopus is it?”

“What?” He’s staring at you now.

Charge can’t see your face but you know it’s blushing something fierce by how hot your ears are burning. He heard it. He heard it. He heard—

“Why would the type of octopus matter more than the boost?” he continues, waiting for your response with an open face.

There’s no use trying to read his mind, you know that, but you try to tread water against it anyway. And of course, there’s no luck: solid ground. Perhaps he’s being polite and merely pretending he didn’t hear it?

You consider just leaving, but he did ask… and you sure do have an answer.

“Th-the boost is an, an important fac-factor, sure, but dep-p-pending on the boost it c-could—could be a secondary issue. The m-m…main issue is that an a-animal is going to, to adhere to its nature fir-first and forem-most, and that’s what’s going to be-be-be a p-problem. There are over three, three h-hundred species of Octopodes, Ricardo—“

“Wait. It’s not Octopuses?” he asks with genuine confusion.

“No, Octopus is, is a third d-declensi-sion noun.”

“A what?”

“It’s a s-subcategory of declension n-n-nou-nouns that have consonant st-stems for the nomi-nominative singular.”

He’s giving you a look as blank as mind.

“…Just carry on with your point, that’s going to take us somewhere else. I wanna know how fucked we are.”

You take a deep breath, shaking the nerves out of your hands and spine. It’s hard to talk, it has always been hard for you even before the damage, but it’s kind of nice to do it. To pretend like you’re as eloquent as humans are.

“There are three h-hundred species in the-the order, but that’s not also t-taking into con-consideration the class of Cephalopoda wh-wh-which adds the option of nautiloids, s-squids, and cuttlef-f-fish.”

“What do Mindflayer ships have to do with this?”

“W-what?”

“Nothing, continue,” he speaks quickly.

“Okay… S-so, you h-have an incredibly w-wi-wide array of options for a creature that is—without the b-boost—incredibly diverse, in-intelligent, and made of a complex n-n-nervous system encase-casesd within a radically a-alterable form. Do you know how m-m-m—many old papers I’ve found ab-bout octopodes escap-ping from their enclosures in aquariums and l-like facilities? Too many. It’s amazing!”

It’s hard to get your words out fast enough; you have so much to share and yet your mouth feels as if it’s too full and spilling, or like your mind isn’t going fast enough. Sluggish.

“F-f-furthermore, depending on the sp-species and subspecies w-we’re dealing with there’s the addition of, of uncertainty per… pertaining to the levels of ven-venom that may be present. Neither of us know enough t-t-toxinology to handle a possible incident of en-enven-envenomation. For e-example: if our opponent was a b-blue-ringed octopus and s-succe-cessfully managed to b-bite one of us the-there is literally no, no, no anti-venom available. We’re dealing with n-neurotox-toxins that are causing nausea, b-bl-blindness, paralysis, resp-piratory arrest, cardiac failure, and, and/or death within m-minutes via suff-f-focation due to diaphragm paralysis!”

He blinks his eyes in surprise as you lay this information on him. You look away, the contact almost hurting despite his inability to see your own face.

“…You sound so incredibly enthusiastic about that that it’s concerning, Sides.”

Looking back at him you notice Charge’s face is as concerned as his tone is, but he’s also leaned in with his hand holding up his chin—a clear sign that he’s too interested in your theory to end the conversation he started. The concern, however, is brief and blending into something far more… affectionate.

It makes you feel defensive, the way he’s taking your interest in this.

“Octopodes are an i-in-incredibly fascinating study in the g-genetic and phys-physiological variety among s-species but that’s not the point!” you huff, collecting yourself with a deep breath hoping it will wash away the speed bumps in your words, “Th-the point, is that in a-a-any situation where a regular, unb-boosted animal would have a clear advantage o-on us, that same animal boosted is only going to be f-f-further superior. If you remove p-pr-predators from an ecosystem the remaining a-animals adapt to the si-situation and the world around them d-deals with the repercussions. That m-means someone s-somewhere had to be thoroughly c-c-con, ugh, convinced that boosting an o-octopus—already a wily creature—w-w-would be an overall positive. Who am I b-but a step on it’s i-i-inevitable rise in Los D-diablos?”

“No, see: the laser dolphins loose in the irradiated Pacific Ocean that attack ships have proven that scientists don’t really think that far,” he chuckles, thoroughly leaning into the hand propped up by his knee now. His leg is rested upon his other one as if he’s planted himself in this conversation.

“The b-b-boost drug is p-proof enough of that, but I d-digress,” you mutter bitterly.

Charge sends a knowing and pointed look your way.

“Then on the o-other hand if it’s s-something like a giant Pacific octopus, w-w-we’re dealing with thirty-three to o-one-hundred-and-ch-ch-change pounds of Fuck You. Nine to fourteen f-f-feet or more of arm s-span? We’re not getting away. Not if the boost a-af-affects its mobility—bye. I don’t want to kn-know how much press-ssure a muscular hydrostat c-can get out of longitudinal, t-t-t-tr-transverse, and circular muscles. Especially c-considering their blood is viscous a-and pumping it through th-th-three hearts and a body is p-probably a shit-load o-of pressure as is.”

“A shit-load? What a scientific unit of measurement, I’m intrigued on the conversion rates to a fuck-ton,” he chuckles.

You roll your eyes and judging by his face he knows it.

Suddenly Charge pulls a scrunched face, wriggling his lips about. “How uh… how easy do you think it’d be to break a human neck with those?”

“Depends on the boost.”

“Oh god—the suckers! What about the suckers! Those things could like,” he makes a clawing, tearing motion towards his head, “rip your face off or something.”

“If it has l-l-laser eyes it wouldn’t even n-need to.”

“Or acid venom.”

“Enhanced c-camouflage and enhanced durability and r-re-reflexes—a perfect hunter.”

“Like a Predator, y’know the alien guys from that movie, but with tentacles instead of dreads…”

“I… don’t know what that is.”

“What?! You’ve never experienced Predator? It’s an alien hunting down paramilitary guys, I actually think you’d like it.”

You’ve been one of those. Is it a film about ReGenes?

“…Maybe.”

“So the case and point of this enlightening and terrifying conversation is…?”

“Fucked,” you supply.

“Yeah, we’re fucked,” he confirms happily.

At first, Kai would find it somewhat odd.

His coat already engulfs him, so what more if it were you wearing it?

His thoughts are proven true when he sees you in it, the white fabric practically swallowing you whole in all of its snowy canvas. He's leaning against the doorframe, watching you raise your arms as you stare with something like wonderment in your eyes at the length of the sleeve that Kai has always found annoying.

When he makes his presence known with a snort, the look on your face is all too worth it even though you'll get back at him later for that.

From thereon, during the breaks where he's alone, he finds himself missing this sight of you.

It comes to him that it was the first time he ever saw you wearing one of his clothes. And that he doesn't, well, dislike the idea of seeing you in any of them.

(He decides this with a silly grin stretching his lips wide and unfocused eyes, something that Sion takes note of and pokes fun at).

Kai makes it his own hidden agenda to lend his clothes to you. Discreetly, of course, 'lest you get any ideas.

If he happens to put his coat around you, it's because he's noticed that the weather has gotten chilly as of late. His hat, because the sunlight has been too harsh whenever the both of you get lunch together. His turtlenecks, whenever you stay overnight.

He's just being a good lover, okay! Definitely not because he thinks you look so cutely comfy in his things. No, definitely not.

"Oi! Aren't you forgetting something? ...Here, wear this. I can't have you getting sick on me...What? What's that look for? You know it's your turn to make dinner, so don't go catching a cold!"

curious bc i've never played melty blood or gotten to know tsukihime sion, whats your criticism of fgo sion? from my brand new to her eyes the only thing i really disliked about her in the lb3 prologue was that silly twintails hair. otherwise she seemed like a cool new ally and interesting character, but i recall you were disappointed with her?

My problem with FGO Sion is that they essentially pseudoservanted her without the pseudoservant. She shares almost nothing with the original Sion barring her name and color scheme.

This might take a bit, melty Sion as a person is very much defined by her backstory.

Sion in Melty Blood is a socially awkward outcast and huge math nerd whose behavior and personality was heavily influenced by the ostracization of her family and the invention of etherlite. See, the Eltnam’s have this mystic code called Etherlite, essentially a string they can use as a whip or as steel wire in battle, but it also allows them to connect to people’s minds by attaching to them, allowing the Eltnam’s to read minds, download memories and experiences, even hack into their bodies and assume control.

Such an invention was seen as horrific even by the families in Atlas (who are the ones considered too extreme for the Clock Tower), so they ostracized the Eltnam family and Sion didn’t exactly grow up with any friends. it didn’t help either that her ancestor was Zepia Eltnam Oberon, one of the most fearsome vampires on Earth.

Due to all that, Sion ended up being a loner, focused on research and developing her genius mathematics skills. Using standard Atlas spells, she partitioned her brain into 7 parts to allow her 7 independent thought processes at once, while also speeding up how fast she could think. She started seeing everything in terms of statistics, and every interaction - fights included - were just math problems to work out. By stealthily hooking her opponent up to her etherlite during a fight, she could instantly download all their data, create a mental chart of everything their opponent might try, and instantly come up with several plans to counter them with success rates included.

Inevitably, one night everything goes wrong and she loses a fight to Zepia Eltnam, who kills her bodyguard Riesbyfe (she gets better eventually), eats everyone in sight, then vampirizes her to make a successor before flying off to Misaki Town. Sion then realizes she needs to ask for help, or she’s doomed to start eating people.

So all the appeal of Melty Sion is watching this supercomputer of a person be forced to figure out how people actually work. She meets Shiki Tohno while downloading and reading the data of everyone in Misaki Town, she gets surprised that she’s beaten during their fight because Tohno is an idiot that wouldn’t make the most optimal moves, then she’s forced to learn how to just ask people for help instead of hacking them. There’s a lot of fun in watching her slowly figure out things like basic interactions and processing emotions. She even goes from having a crush on Shiki to realizing maybe she’s just fond of him because she didn’t really have friends before and that she might have a thing for Riesbyfe. By the third Melty Blood game she’s adjusted to everyone and is part of a vigilante group / gag character trio where she, Riesbyfe, and Satsuki roam the alleyways of Misaki Town at night to hunt monsters and keep it safe for people walking home. She’s so delighted (despite her blank face) at having friends that she ends up being the only Tsukihime heroine who gets along with all the others, even becoming close friends and science partners with Kohaku.

So it was pretty disappointing to me 2 years ago to get hyped for months at Sion coming to FGO, only to get a genki girl calling herself Sion and being a completely different character. She’s a pseudoservant without the pseudoservant.

The sad thing is if she was actually a new character I would have liked FGO Sion very much. She’s cute and funny, and brings something new to the Chaldea team. Unfortunately seeing her is just a reminder to me that Tsukihime as a series only exists now to be plundered by FGO to tease fans with.

That being said, LB3 IS my favorite Lostbelt and I’m excited to see the rest of it! Just not... Sion.

act ???. backstage your name is….. silver tongue.

“Sion, Sion, Sion!” Scrawny legs and worn shoes chase after the quietly pacing figure of the Informant. Dandelions clumped in her hair, messy brown locks curled out and dancing in the sunlight, she couldn’t keep herself in one place as the older person’s walking was made her too anxious to keep still.

“If I were to--” Numbers and confusing phrases are what she hears leaving from their mouth. It sounds too technical, too boring, too specific, to be about anything near by them. Bottom of their boot digs into the red soil, drawing out small lines and intersections as they continue in their plan.

“Si-on! Listen to me, please!” The young girl haughtily announces, balling her fists, tugging on Simeon’s jacket. Tiny hands were met with scarred hands greeting them, gently patting them, trying to ease their frustrations. Lilac pink eyes meet earthly brown eyes, two brows lowered from impatience and the other’s one brow raised in curiosity.

“What’s wrong, little one?”

“I’m soooo bored!”

“What am I to about that, lilita? What about your older brother and sister? Are they not wanting to play with you?”

��Rosibel is too busy with that hot thing or something. Reuben, he thinks he’s too big to play with me--! I’m only 8! And he’s 10! And that’s dumb! I’m taller than him so I--”

“Alright, alright, enough.” Or, as her mother would say, tranquilate. “I suppose I can do something about that.” The way they rubbed their chin, eyes averting, already had the young girl staring widely, wandering what was in their head.

“I could--” They wave their hand over their throat, quietly kneeling down to her height. An already pitched voice quickly deepened, a foreign rasp yet familiar softness coming from their mouth now. “Show you a world of possibilities of people you can meet.”

They return to their feet, back straightening, a distant warmth in their eyes, almost as if possessed by another. “Why not a man whose been around the world before and knows all these places? He’s quite old, but, ‘Ah, maybe for you, I will tell you a story' because you always brought him strawberries you’ve stolen from your mother’s pantry.”

“Don’t tell her--!”

“I won’t. I swore, I don’t forget.” Simeon sighs, clearing their throat. “Ah, but maybe this mischievous stranger the old man knows may consider it..! She’s a renowned thief,” they click their tongue, voice already sharpening and shrill, higher-pitched with the accent thicker than the previous. While the young girl couldn’t pinpoint it, it was most certainly Russian. “How do you convince her not to spill your secrets? Maybe her friend, the old man, can convince her.. But,” Simeon rolls their shoulders, shrugging, glancing away from her, “ ‘Should I really consider that? What do you have for me that I could eeveeer want?!’“

Simeon rocks on the balls of their feet, rubbing their chin. “Or, there’s always...” Their voice rolls into a hum, accent dissipating and taking on a sleepy tone. They shuffle to seat themselves on a nearby rock, legs crossed like a woman of proper with their posture reeking power all behind careful eyes. “The calculative detective who might take up on your case to figure out how to stop the thief. Though, you need to impress her, she has quite a reputation,” Simeon spoken this, almost like they were familiar with this story too many times, “but, she is remarkably considerate, if not aloof, if you’re able to step yourself up and come running to her door.”

“But, oh, oh....there’s always the valiant route. Not so deceptive, more so action-packed, honorable--”

“The highly regarded and greatest defenders of the empire, you can seek them out..! You can hire a knight of the great Orden--” Their posture was striking stiff, disciplined, though their was certain passion in their voice. Lila’s brows furrowed, quickly patting Simeon’s abdomen, demanding attention.

“Sion! They don’t exist!” Lila interrupts. “So you would prefer a detective over a knight?” Simeon tilts their head. “You say people I can meet!” She clarifies and “Of course, of course--” they quietly nod. “....” “....” “But, wouldn’t it be cool?” They murmur under their breath. “They would have a stick u-” She was about to finish her sentence -- “Hey, hey! Don’t say that!” until Simeon quickly dissuaded her. “But you did before!” “Don’t repeat me!” “Why?” “Lila, ¿terminaste tus quehaceres?” “Mami--!” .... “SION, THAT’S NOT FUNNY.” “That was a little mean, I admit -- I’m sorry, it’s okay-”

It was only after moments of Lila sticking out her tongue, and Simeon returning the same childish act, that both erupted into euphoric laughter. Though, Simeon’s voice returned to normal, their laugher softer and quieter than the young girl’s, she was growing conscious of her own and covered her mouth.

But, of course, Simeon had spoken out, encouraging her:

“You have a beautiful laugh. Don’t hide it, please!”

Two (2) HCs:

No matter how much Sophie embraces personas and taking on acting/being a different ‘person,’ the core of her being will always stand out. One of those traits being an innate love for children and always having a incredible soft spot for them. She will honestly make herself look silly and ruin any form of seriousness on her (or Simeon, in this case) to make them smile. This also does mean that if you mess with children, you’re on her shit list. There isn’t any workaround this and this one way to actually see her mad. Her true anger works slowly, calculatingly, and coldly. She waits the best time to strike and she will not hesitate to mark you off a list to do in her daily schedule. Sophie’s innate magic originates from her voice. The same way reality bends to her voice and how much everything is disposable at her command, her magic itself pretty much always 'on.’ Explaining her magic takes a while, so don’t expect to find out really what it can do here. (I just call it a ‘sophie can make everything fucky wucky on a bad day.’) However, we’re going to talk about the property that it is channeled through and one of her unique aspects. She is able to implement mimicry and change her voice freely when she properly trains herself (which she does in this verse). Control of magic (or general ‘self-control’ as a theme for her, including illusions) in pretty important and can also be reflected by another extension of her power (over here). She doesn’t need any formal command or spell to do this and can happen naturally (when thought of properly).

NOTE:

I originally had Sophie/Simeon about to give an explanation and a ‘did you know fact’ comparing the warriors to roosters and Lila would’ve slapped her hands over their mouth. But, just know Simeon was ready to lecture. ｡ﾟ(｡ﾉωヽ｡)ﾟ｡ I just want my baby to talk and fumble over her words in excitement and feeling comfortable to talk about her interests and passions. even if she can dumb of ass, stubborn of ass, she is soft of ass...a marshmellow, a marshmellow hedgehog....

“Harry, mate, are you paying attention?”

“Huh?” Harry asked, looking up from his phone. “What'd you say?”

Hermione chuckled behind her hand. “Oh leave him be, Ron. Most likely, he’s on that man’s profile. I have no doubt his eyes have probably been irreversibly damaged from staring at that screen all day.”

Ron snorted and rolled his eyes. “Mate, I thought you were on holiday with us. Not with your Instagram boyfriend.”

Harry felt his cheeks burn slightly and put the phone in his pocket, giving Ron and Hermione his full attention. “Sorry guys. I’m all yours. I swear.”

The three sat in a small restaurant on the far side of town waiting to be served. After spending the day traveling around and visiting countless places, Harry had barely looked up from his phone the entire time. He had become so immersed in Draco that he just couldn’t stop checking in to see if he had posted anything new. And so far, he was out of luck.

“So, where are we going next?” Harry asked, trying to pretend to be interested, and Hermione instantly perked up.

“I was thinking we could take a tour of Louvre Museum,” she said.

Ron groaned. ”Really? A museum? That’s so lame.”

“Come on Ron, you might enjoy it.”

Harry zoned out of the conversation after a while, then sneakily pulled his phone out and looked at it under the table. He mentally cursed when Draco still hadn’t posted or said anything, and put it back in his pocket.

When he looked up a blonde waitress came to the table with a notepad and pen. She spoke in French and Hermione spoke back, using the French Harry knew she had learned during school.

“What do you two want?” Hermione asked.

“Ooh! I want the pasta and garlic bread sticks,” Ron piped up.

“Harry?”

Harry looked down at the menu on the table and made a quick decision, completely forgetting to go over it earlier with his friends.

“Oh, er, the chicken and asparagus dish looks good.”

Hermione nodded and spoke with the waitress as she wrote their order down. A sudden thought passed through Harry’s mind and he quickly interrupted them.

“Oh! Er, ask if they have any cucumbers,” he said quickly. Hermione and Ron both raised an eyebrow at him.

“Cucumbers?”

“Yeah. A cucumber and ranch.”

Hermione gave him a puzzled look before translating to the waitress. The woman nodded and wrote it down, then said something to them with a smile before leaving with their order.

“Are you having cravings or something?” Ron asked with a smirk. “First watermelons, then cucumbers and ranch. You’re bloody weird.”

Harry shrugged and Hermione mentioned something to Ron about the museum again. The moment they began to speak with each other, Harry was once again zoned out. He pulled his phone out and went back to Draco’s profile, feeling his heart leap when he noticed the man had posted another selfie.

The picture was of Draco sitting outside in front of a rose bush. His hair was loose and falling freely down his shoulders, while his gorgeous face was showing a peaceful smile that made Harry’s heart leap. He didn’t hesitate to like it, but still felt silly when he did so. He stared at the picture for a good fifteen or so minutes until the waitress came back with their order.

Best to eat the chicken first, Harry thought, putting his phone away and picking up his fork. Good stuff first, before I vomit all over the place.

The food was eaten quickly, small talk being exchanged between the three as they ate, and Harry pushed his plate away the moment he was done. He slid the plate with the sliced up cucumber and bowl of ranch and grimaced.

He picked up his phone and took a picture, then sent it to Draco.

goldenboy: can’t believe I’m about to eat this

Draco replied only a moment later.

iceprince: Bon appétit 😏

Harry smirked, grabbed a slice, dipped it in the ranch, and popped it into his mouth. The moment he bit down on it he grimaced and immediately wanted to throw up. He chewed for a few seconds before swallowing, shuddering as it went down his throat.

He snapped a picture of himself, a pained expression on his face.

goldenboy: oh my god

goldenboy: what the fuck

iceprince: Language, Mr Potter

goldenboy: I only took one bite and I’m already about to barf

iceprince: Mission failed? 🤔

goldenboy: absolutely not

Harry picked up another piece and did the same, this time it was almost more gross than before. After what seemed like an eternity, he finally managed to finish half of the cucumber before actually gagging.

In between every couple of bites, Harry managed to snap a few pictures of himself eating and sent them to Draco. The moment he was finished he nearly gasped in relief, and he ignored the confused looks his friends were giving him.

goldenboy: mission accomplished

iceprince: Well done, Potter

goldenboy: so what’s my next task?

iceprince: You’ll find out tomorrow

iceprince: Hope you have room for dessert 😘

Harry, in fact, did not have room for dessert.

How serious should we take the extras? I mean i thought Sensei draws them for fun. something cute and funny so we won’t get bored with only guns to long. but then there are those details like Asami’s Pic with a teddy on Aki’ phone which appears in the main story . That means this extra should be canon.??

This is a good question and one I don’t have a definitive answer for. Short answer: Some are canon, some are not and I don’t think sensei thinks about it nearly as carefully and obsessively as we do. Some are obviously so, like the ones tied into the storyline (Hong Kong extra, Temporary Paradise, etc.) Some obviously not (the businessman extras, which could be interpreted as Aki’s dreams or fantasies, since one of them turns out to be just that.) Same with the silly ones like the vampire bunny and the bear and tiger extra.

Longer answer, IMO:

Love Surprise (New Year extra) - canon

Ones not marked as happy ever after I believe fall into the gaps of the main story, mostly between volumes two and three and between volumes six and seven, because they have a feeling of a still-developing, somewhat awkward relationship, where the Happy Every After ones feel like a more stable relationship where they are comfortable with each other.

LEO: That’s right. Even on stage we talk eagerly. (lol) As you can see from the flow of the conversation just now, OMI-chan has established a unique world.

MAGURA: Even though there are only 10 minutes left until the stand-by, OMI-kun checks the steps by himself.

RYO: Today too, I was wondering where did he run off, but once he came back he was all sweaty (lol). “Huh!? Did you just come back from a sauna!?”, said Leader to poke fun at him. (lol)

MAGURA: Leader’s comedy acts are always running high, haha.

SION: That’s true!

LEO: Huh? Before I knew it, it’s my turn? (lol)

RYO: Even when Leader is the MC, he sets up his silly booby traps! He’s really reliable! OMI-kun and Leader have totally different personalities, but when they’re standing together on stage they show a really reliable side of them; it gets us all fired up and make us want to work hard!

MAGURA: LEO-kun’s leadership is really something. He pulls us together.

RYO: That's not an aggressive sensation, it’s natural. If I were a girl, I would definitely fall for a guy that has Leader’s qualities~!

SION: But if it’s about being natural that we’re talking about, aren’t you also pretty straightforward, RYO-kun?

LEO: His switch is always on after all. Especially the tension when there’s a meal in front of him is remarkable. (lol)

RYO: I like catering, that’s all!!

MAGURA: Indeed, haha. In front of a catering, RYO-kun’s tension is at its MAX. I think it’s really cute when that happens.

RYO: Eh!?

SION: There’s no mistake, since Hi!Superb’s cute one says so.

RYO: ! Ah, thanks!!

LEO: Also, when I’m the MC you take the lead telling me I gotta be lively during our scenes and enhance the mood, so I’m always saved by that.

RYO: I was praised by Leader! Yaay!

LEO: However, there are also moments when you rush things up, so there’s room for improvement, haha.

RYO: !!

OMI: Because you push your way through as if you’re in a bulfight. I’d be happy if you could calm down a little.

RYO: Uwaaaah~~ I was body-slammed~~ (cries).

SION: I think that having a challenging spirit is amazing.

RYO: Thank you, SION!

A question from Leader that’ll cause the youngest members to be in a pinch.

LEO: To MAGURA and SION in particular, if you were to work with someone from Hi!Superb, who would you choose?

MAGURA: Hmm, let’s see...

LEO: It’s okay if it’s just from your current impressions!

RYO: No, no, I’m scared!

SION: Ehh, It’s troubling because I want to be with everyone.

RYO: Well then! When I went out to eat with SION before, I was told that "I feel so comfortable with RYO-kun!"

SION: I wonder if I really did say that, haha.

LEO: So, is SION saying he’s fine doing things together with RYO?

OMI: Somehow, the pressure here is amazing.

MAGURA: I really want to try being together with everyone, so it's difficult to answer..... But, I'm sure that here “I want to be with you all” is the right answer, right?

RYO: Stop make this look like it’s business! (cries)

LEO: Speaking of MAGU-chan, he has a refined ability to perceive and watch closely his surroundings, haha. Before, during Hi!Superb’s program Hi!SuPunch, I ate something very spicy, but when I was in agony MAGU-chan was the very first that brought me water.

RYO: Although they’re younger than me, I think they’re really reliable. During lives, it’s odd how I often go to the youngers’ (to MAGURA & SION) side, maybe it’s becose I sense safety from them.

LEO: You really love MAGU-chan, RYO!

RYO: True, sometimes I mistake him for a girl! (lol) But when I look at his abdominal muscles, "Ah..... I get it, after all he’s a man" I say, disappointed. (lol)

OMI: That’s obvious.

RYO: Here’s the straight man, OMI-kun getting colder and colder!

OMI: Stop! Don’t stick close to me!

MAGURA: RYO-kun...

SION: Yeah, and a bit of a M.

LEO: SION, what's your impression on MAGURA?

SION: Well... We’re the same age and we get along. It’s kind of like... if you get too close, he’ll disappear, as if there is a hole in one’s heart?
