What’s your opinion on the movie now that you’ve seen it?

oh boy.... what is my opinion! it's a terrible movie no one watch it is the short answer the long answer, which i am putting under a cut:

it's still a terrible movie! the plot.. the plot makes no sense! it is never explained! there's fucking ALIENS??? and i know. i know aliens exist and are involved in the comics. i know comics charles has an alien girlfriend at some point. they should not have been introduced this way!

i don't think we ever even got names for them? unless i missed them? i was just calling the main blonde one "alien bitch" the whole movie like what is going on..... moot found the answer thru google but i will be honest i forgot it like immediately and i know it was dumb as shit like verk or something

anyways. so right off the bat we got space shit and i was clearly supposed to be cool it just... wasnt to me probs cause the budget was $2 and they divided those $2 among paying the cast (having no budget it not a bad thing!!!! ive seen many good movies with no budgets!!! but here its like. they didnt care. also they gave the worst wig in the world to james.) im gonna move into characters now cause thats where my biggest grievances lie like even a movie about dumbass aliens would be bearable if the characters were good and thats often whats carried me through other xmen movies like apocalypse

i don't even know where to start this is such a fucking mess so im gonna start with charles!

uhhh charles was. fucking awful this movie. like genuinely awful i wanted to beat his ass at the beginning i do think charles can be manipulative and put a big goal ahead of the wellbeing of a person in the moment! i love charles having negative traits i love those traits being explored! this.... wasn't it and it felt very abrupt in comparison to the previous movies, which did not really touch on his more dickish traits besides the god complex & how he made raven feel + his awful coping mechanisms. it wasn't movie charles! idk who it was but it wasn't him! if they wanted to show him as a dick they needed to develop more they cant just Do That! raven! ohohoho my beloved raven... ive pointed this out before but the alt timeline is awful to female characters which is especially pathetic considering the og's came out 10+ years before them i cant believe movies from the very earliest of the 2000s did better but they did.. how are you worse than the movies you based yourselves on. back to raven my babygirl. i am so so so sorry you never had any real development or plotline besides the first class "accepting yourself" thing and then nothing actually solidly fleshed out since. the raven that lives in my head does. but thats not the raven in the movies and she got thrown back into her "i wanna leave and do something meaningful!!!" role which i found extremely tired. her and charles can have an extremely meaningful and nuanced relationship but the movies never actually go there and im miserable about it and in this one they just argue about shit they argued over in first class then she got fridged goodbye my sweet angel... sorry they made you say that stupid x-women thing as a throwaway #girlpower! moment at least you didnt live to see the aliens

(on that note i do appreciate the way they showed charles having a relapse with alcohol over her death. that was a small good detail)

hank was like. im glad he developed a spine this movie but also he was forgettable to me personally after the scene where he yelled at charles. him siding with erik was hilarious as fuck but im ???? idk i need to rewatch his scenes to develop strong opinions on him in this movie but im also never gonna do that lmao

erik my other babygirl im very glad the movie had you take a backseat i cant imagine what they wouldve done if he had a bigger role.... the scene where jean showed up was good until he valued the military's opinion more. my king would never. he was hot also in most of his scenes so good for him!!! the entire "im gonna kill jean over raven!!" thing... eh. if they showed us an actual strong relationship be that platonic or romantic between erik & raven it probably would've hit more but they didn't! and so it was just! i mean okay i guess! also very funny how he was sitting on his little gay socialist island like "i've found peace finally" but then they immediately had him go out to kill jean!

regarding the kids in general. i liked scott the most this movie but they were all very! idk the alt ones pale in comparison to the og's for me personally i dont think thats their fault i think its the writing.. it wouldve helped if they all got more than 10 minutes of screen time besides jean but they did not. there was just too much going on it needed Less

they almost had flavor with the entire jean & her little kiddy repressed trauma + her adopted father relationship with charles but it fell super flat probably because of the fucking aliens they also had to work in i think that plot line had the most potential out of all of them tbh

moving on from that the stair scene. that is the most ableist thing i have every fucking seen and i didn't even actually watch it the chat was going crazy about how awful it was so i luckily realized what was gonna happen and paused + skipped over it like im sick thinking of it even now and im abled so i cant imagine how disabled fans feel. whoever came up with that plague on your house burn in hell etc that sounds like a joke but its not i legit want to smash a car with a bat over it (for those that don't know, jean makes charles walk up stairs/drags him up stairs with her powers. she tells him to walk to her before doing this.)

the train fight was good as hell. and the proposal!!!! erik proposed!!! but im gonna say something unpopular: this movie was not worth that one minute of cherik. its like they stabbed me and instead of proper care they gave me a band-aid. anyways,

after idk how many months im still heavily brainrotting over your "scott summers is a knight of doom" and your comparison of him w/ dave. hussie ran and tripped and fell so marvel could walk.

do you have any more classpect hcs for any other marvel characters? o5, champions, etcetc? your analysis are genuinely good

anon trust that you are not alone in this because every once in a while i remember that scott summers is a TEXTBOOK knight of doom and i immediately need to sit down

however i’m sorry to say that i don’t necessarily have any other hcs as solid as #that because scott was my #1 meow meow for months on end BUT i do have some thoughts that ill put under the cut!! disclaimer that it’s been a little while since i’ve read anything and i’m not nearly an authority on any of these characters

emma frost:

the easiest immediate grab for me is slayyyqueener emma frost as some kind of mind player (beyond the shallow association of psychic = mind)

emma interacts with the world through LAYERS upon LAYERS of fronts!!!! i think it’s really telling that, when i think about her powers, i don’t immediately think about the whole mind-reading/mind-control/whatever/etc — i think about her incredibly frequent use of psychic suggestion/projection to create illusions and fronts !!!

three outstanding but contrasting examples of this:

house of m #6 where she uses layers psychic commands to hide herself and her compatriots (a tactical use) — this was the very first example of her powers that came to mind, but she’s used very similar strategies innumerable times throughout the comics; her manipulation of others’ perceptions and expectations is a key part of her “fight style”, if that makes sense? she’s as powerful a psychic as anyone else, but she’s the only psychic i’ve seen with such emphasis on this style of psychic suggestion

some other comic (i’m thinking it’s either from late utopia era or some time in krakoa era, or maybe something else entirely but it was very lighthearted) where she’s going out on the town dressed in pjs or something with her hair and makeup undone etc etc etc but she uses psychic suggestion to make everyone around her think that they’re seeing her in full glam (personal use)

aaaand the elephant in the room…. inhumans v xmen and death of X with the whole illusion scott thing. i cant comment on this one because UMM.. as a cyclopswasrightist LOLLL I DIDN’T READ IT…. but from general osmosis i know that it generally revolved around emma using her abilities as 1. a crutch for her grief and 2. a way to keep the mutant cause alight through martyring scott and 3. a way for him to not be remembered as an m-pox victim. god can we just give it up with the inhumans i promise nobody gaf

so with that down pat… heres the hard part ? i struggle a lot with class assignment so i’m just going to run through some ideas:

thief of mind:

i think it could work! she has some of the showiness of the thief but it’s tempered by the calculations of a cerebral mind player

the thing with thieves is that their aspect-related selfishness is typically not selfishness for selfishness’ sake? … thieves do things that align with their own (typically… unique) moral code and what they see as the Right Thing To Do, with very little regard for the standards of others. that is VERY EMMA even as she goes through her reformation-era (see: wh*don’s run)

and the thief of mind classpect madlib (one who steals mind/through mind) works pretty well both considering her modus operandi and her skillset! actually wow this is really well-suited to her i actually can’t think of another class for her? so i guess it’s decided? emma frost is the THIEF OF MIND 🙏

jean gray:

okay so i haven’t read a TON of the older comics and a lot of krakoa era stuff makes me wanna vomit so i am not nearly as well versed in jean’s stuff as i am with emma but i did read some of the newer stuff with young jean

but before i begin can we please just laugh at this panel together. why does this artist look like they trace from optometrist ads

anyways she definitely suffers from the witchmaid subjugation bullshit, i think? where the maid follows a somewhat typical path of “subjugation —> realization —> agency” the witch is more continually limited by the narrative except when it demands for their particular talents and explosive power/influence over their aspect… the realized witch ultimately suffers for the advancement of the narrative

i thinkkkk… i think i’m gonna go with witch! considering the passion that defines jean and the scale of the power she wields (and is often too dead or cockblocked by the narrative to Actually Wield) as well as how she literally just cannot catch a break (it’s a bit strange to me how the mage is seen as Thee Suffering Aspect when the witch is right there but i digress)

god okay shooting into the dark here but maybe heart for her aspect? again, going past the shallow association of psychic/empathy powers = heartmind, she has the witchtrait of being surrounded by her aspect all her life — ie. identity issues and empathy

i think it’s fucking insane how neatly the dave/sollux/scott comparison lines up with the jade/aradia/jean comparison. holy fucking shit. i don’t know how intentional it was but jesus christ in heaven

god sorry i am just so sleepy i’ll come back with more thoughts later but here are some last shots in the dark

hank = a mage (for very similar reasons why edward elric is a mage: got their ass beat in the pursuit of knowledge/ways to solve their Big Problem)

kamala = a maid (?????) (if for no other reason than she reminds me So Much of my friend who is also a maid and more that i don’t feel like explaining)

amadeus = a page (light?) [pagebluster and overcompensation —> genuine development]

rogue = indya moore (not a classpect just a very very good fancast and this list feels incomplete)

I had the ending robbed from me by dumbasses on instagram. I predicted tony would take the gauntlet and die from it because I knew he was going to die. I wish I could relive watching that not knowing, but if any marvel fans want to tell me how they felt I would love to listen and talk about endgame and the mcu with you and live vicariously through you. that black widow dying and cap getting old was also spoiled. I thought cap was gonna stay when they time traveled the first time but I knew where the soul stone business was going. I wanted to sob at Tony dying and I knew I would have if I didnt know, but I already knew and had accepted it but now it feels like he isnt actually dead idk like when tony almost died in iw I cried so I know I would have sobbed.... but even so tony’s death had been spoiled to me 3 separate times in the three days since its been released and each has been on a different day so I guess it was meant to be but im still mad that was taken from me

Seto Kaiba

First impression

What a BAMF!

( I was a child and very tiny and kinda fairly very bullied and Seto was...well he broke into his own house and jumped out a window. And he could fight. I was sold. I wanted to be like him.) I also sided with him over Yugi on most things...including friendship and speeches.

Impression now

Maaaaaaaaac freakin dork ass curt ass dramatic af child with anger issues and trauma someone help him someone help him Now.

I also ( obviously) now side with Yugi over Seto on the whole friendship deal. (But I get Seto’s reaction on an almost instinctive level and still love him a lot.)

( Like..dont get it wrong. I poke fun at him because of how much he reminds of me as a kid but...I adore him and I’ll defend him from near anyone. Okay no I won’t because im a coward who goes into fight-or-flight at the mere thought of char-disc-0urse but like still

I love the kid. Him good child. Deserves all the happiness and good fortune. I want to see him grow up healthypng.)

Favorite moment

hmm. I haven’t seen him since the show was new so its foggy but..Imma say any time he either shares screen time with Mokuba or snarks at Joey. ( at Joey specifically because oh lord “Mokuba make sure Wheeler’s late” still sends me into a laughing spell. ( mind you I adore Joey too but uh..yeah. Snarking Seto is best Seto)

Idea for a story

Right now the one I have is a crossover with xmen where Laura Kinney becomes his and Mokuba’s bodyguard. It has ended up becoming 3 separate verses because i couldn’t decide between comic!book Laura and Logan!Laura and also at what time in both their stories I wanted them because I am the opposite of competent and know no hubris.

It’s eking along kinda slow-like tho. Because writing Seto’s hard for me. I feel like a lot of people have done it better already. So I don’t know that it’ll get done.

Also I don’t know how to keep her from killing Pegasus.

I also had an idea for him and Tea becoming friends in like therapy or something but that never kicked off. Although it’s worth mentioning I’d like to explore the concept of what it would take for them to get along.

Unpopular opinion

He’s a good person I guess? I’ve heard that’s unpopular but haven’t seen it. He deserves a shot at a happy life. He’s a good person? He has never ( to my knowledge) been unkind to Mokuba and even if he was being angry in one moment in your life isn’t some kinda morality indicator especially when it comes to children. Especially traumatized to high heaven children who just keep getting traumatized so no Mokuba didn’t “deserve a better brother” or w/e both Seto and Mokuba deserved better period and can people just enjoy the show which is about forgiveness and friendship anyways good golly.

I mean..yeah I guess I got a few.

Another one that I think might be unpopular but I don’t know due to not really publicizing it is that Seto and Yugi....actually aren’t that different at the core? Like if you took Seto away from a lot of the Tragic Backstory stuff he might end up..not exactly like Yugi but not that different either. They’d have a lot in common.

Him and Mokuba. Hands down.

Favorite headcanon

Ohshoot do i even have one hm. This ask covers a lot of the headcanons I have for him..but I guess my favorite is him liking children followed by the one that he does math equations and formulas when he’s bored.

I also share a lot of the ones @iced-blood has posted due to most of my exposure to the character coming from his fic after I stopped watching the show so a lot of his headcanons are up there too.

Mokuba Kaiba

Either him in the beginning of the Noah arc since we get to see him know how to operate the computers in KC or when he’s telling Alistair off in Awaken The Dragons

Basically any time he’s not getting captured again for the plot tho.

Idea for a story

I have a couple drabbles based on @kintatsujo‘s age swap AU...and her In The Back Of My Brain AU, alot of her AUS give me ideas actually ( which of course id ask for permission before pursuing) but nothing concrete.

Oh and the xmen crossover mentioned above. Mokuba’s a fair share of that since in one of them Laura’s his bodyguard rather than Seto’s. ( in another Gozaburo gets Laura as protection for Seto while still being abusive and they both shake him off. Like I said it’s..it’s splintered into a lot)

Unpopular opinion

I..don’t think I have any? I don’t really know what opinions are popular tbqh. I guess if anything i saw here is then that.

Favorite headcanon

His hair’s a liability I speak from experience.

I guess I’m a fan of the shared headcanon that Mokuba wears heelys. I like the idea that he’s not a genius like his brother and maybe he doesn’t get HIgh HIGH grades and maybe that’s okay ( as someone who has a complex relationship with academics I guess thats something I wish i saw more often yknow) because he’s smart in different ways.

I like the idea of Mokuba being athletically inclined like skate boarding or parkour or being involved in some sport at school I mean he roped climbed out a window in his intro episode so its not that outlandish.

I actually don’t have that many headcanons for this kid. I should fix that.

Noah Kaiba

First impression

Yikes. What a freakin loon. ( first episode) Oh no..he’s lonely and abandoned. Oh no oh no oh no. ( later episodes in the arc) Okay but he’s still a mean dude ( when he turns ppl to stone) Oh no...he died...and he turned around at the last minute WHAT DO YOU MEAN I DONT GET TO SEE HIM AGAIN. ( at the end)

Impression now

He was a child. And his father left him to rot.

He deserved so much better.

I love him. I cry and screech about him needing things monthly and sometimes weekly.

Favorite moment

When he turned around to fight Gozaburo. Also the scenes where you see Mokuba getting to him.

Idea for a story

I guess-no I know a lot of people have done it better but I like the idea of a canondivergence where he’s spared and/or rescued by Seto.

I also like the idea of crossovers with shows like Digimon or Code Lyoko where you have digital worlds.

I just don’t want to be alone and i want him to have nice things okay. That’s..that’s all i want..from life.

Unpopular opinion

Probs that he was an actual smol child and got a raw deal and Deserved Better. ( tm) ( you’ll find thats..my beat with a lot of characters ^-^:)

Favorite relationship

He...doesnt have any? In fics where he gets brought back like Paved With Good Intentions ( specifically Blue Eyes Violet Eyes) I like seeing his relationships with the other Kaibas. But as far as Canon goes...yeah there’s none.

Favorite headcanon

He’s very tactile. He liked running his hands through his dog’s fur and it always got to him that digitized it..wasn’t the same.

Following that he used to be very physically affectionate before Gozaburo started discouraging it.

Following that if he was to be brought out of the digital place/rescued I think he’d be pretty clingy. I mean because of the tactile thing and because..he’d need to reassure himself the world around him is real.

If he had been allowed to live he’d probably think he didn’t deserve it/that he has to Atone for the stuff he’s done.

His whole world was his father and even when he hated him he loved him. He wanted nothing more than to be held by him again. That’s why the abandonment stung so much, there’s nothing like hating and being hurt by someone you love...and still having a part of you love them. A part of him still wonders what he did to get left behind. That’s a big part of what drove him to the deep end.
