Emmett: Alright, I’m heading out for the weekend. If anyone needs help, I’ve left a book of advice on the table.
Jake: This just says “Jake no”.
Emmett: I want you to apply it to every possible situation.

Silverado (1985). A misfit bunch of friends comes together to right the injustices which exist in a small town.
What a who's-who of late-80s/early 90s cinema! This is a pretty fun Western that leans into the tropes of the genre, both for better and for worse, Very funny to see Kevin Costner in such a little brother role though! 7/10.

The Rattlesnake Rant
Aka why this blog is named what it is
So in Silverado, we see a lot of gunfighting, and each of the four main protagonists has a different style - Jake dual wields his shiny nickel-plated pistols and Mal likes to snipe with his Henry rifle, for example.
However, each character also has their own moral code, and today we’re discussing Jake’s.
There was a concept in the old west known as the “Rattlesnake Code”, stating that a true cowboy ‘never shot an unarmed or unwarned enemy’, also known as ‘always warn before you strike’. As we watch Silverado, we see that Jake very strictly adheres to this code; in his introductory scene, where he explains how he got into jail, he mentions that he only started shooting at the men he injured and killed respectively after they tried to shoot him in the back [unwarned]. [Also this is actually a whole big thing about Jake almost getting shot in the back that I’ll cover later]. Jake, by contrast, always fights in instances of self-defense/all-out gunfights [like in Turley or at McKendrick’s ranch], and he always ensures his opponents are warned. He makes a point of it.
At McKendrick’s ranch, he first takes out Scruffy by swinging down from the rafters and kicking him, but Jake does so with a loud whoop that alerts Scruffy to his presence before he knocks him to the hay.
Right after this, Jake times the dropping of a bag of sand to warn two opponents he’s snuck up behind, so they turn around before he shoots them.
Most obviously, during his final showdown in the film, Jake shouts “Hey!” before shooting Tyree and Deputy Kyle, giving them time to turn so he doesn’t shoot them in the back.
Jake holds to the Rattlesnake Code.

Silverado (1985) is so gorgeous and genuinely cozy when their isn't gunfire, lol. There are so many amazing environmental shots, and the music is crazy y'all. Our grandparents had some good movies, and this is one of them. You all gotta on this.
