What happened to Shannon? Divinium exploding into her, ripping her to pieces? This is how you kill a Warrior Nun.

Ava and Shannon being two halves of the same whole. Two bodies brought into the Church, one dead and one alive. Only one walked out. Did Shannon know she was a placeholder? Did she know she wasn't destined to be the hero, but a martyr in the name of something greater?
Shannon and Ava traded lives. Shannon gave her life, the Halo, to Ava while Ava gave her death to Shannon, both done so unknowingly. Shannon was the heart of the Sister Warriors and she passed that down to Ava. Both were the heart. Did Shannon know everything would break without her? Or did she know her sisters would rally with the new Warrior Nun?
Did Shannon watch as everything crumbled and everything she believed in die? Did she mourn Lilith, both in death and betrayal, for she is was her sister? Did she watch as Mary gave her life for her sisters to live, did she feel relief?
Did Shannon watch as Beatrice and Ava fell in love and denied themselves only to watch them be doomed for a Warrior Nun is never truly theirs? Did she see Mary and herself within them and know how their story would end? As another tragedy. Or did she watch them go through trial after trial and believe they would survive? Believed that they would get to live with each other as Mary and she never had the chance to.
Two girls enter a church, one dead and one alive. Only one walks out, the one not expected. Is she the same person as the one alive or different? Two halves of the same coin are always doomed.

yall ever think about the parallel between mary declaring ‘in this life’ and ava declaring ‘in the next’?
mary breaks formation to avenge someone she loves and she dies. Ava breaks formation to save someone she loves and she dies. Both were done out of love and both ended tragically. Both were on the last ep of the last season

A parallel I haven’t seen much talk about: how Lilith goes on the warpath for Mary the same way Mary went on the warpath for Shannon (and how they both fall into Vincent’s trap).
Season one Lilith was all about the OCS (or rather her ambition for the Halo). She told Mary not a day after Shannon’s murder that she needed to think about the mission, not her own personal agenda (which was not only hypocritical, but as Beatrice said, unfair). And in that same scene, she dismissed Mary as not being a true member of the team because she wasn’t a nun and didn’t take vows like the rest of them. She was a free agent who operated on her own terms.
But after their tearful reconciliation in the catacombs, Vincent’s betrayal, and Mary’s subsequent disappearance under an army of wraith demons, Lilith’s priorities shift significantly. The start of season two finds her as the new lone wolf as she hunts down Vincent herself. And while the OCS is just as interested in finding him to get to Adriel, Lilith’s only concern is Mary. She’s ready to tear him apart herself, just as Mary threatened that man in 1×02, and then later goes through a whole squadron with her bare hands.
The part that really gets me, though, is Lilith and Vincent’s scene in the car. She’s finally got a lead after two months, finally has a location on Mary. And despite being outnumbered, despite being about to walk into Adriel’s fortress without backup, there isn’t one shred of fear or hesitation. She just tells Vincent to signal the guards. “Put a foot out of place and I’ll –”
“You’ll kill me. I know,” Vincent says.
A small smile plays around Lilith’s mouth. “I won’t kill you,” she says easily. “I’d never take that pleasure away from Mary.”
She gives him a pointed look and Vincent just grimaces before they climb out of the car.
Vincent is jovial as he greets the guards and then gestures to Lilith with an outstretched arm. “I have brought home a friend.”
And Lilith, chuckling, slides right into the embrace like it’s nothing, even putting her head on his shoulder. They walk through the gates just like that, leaning against each other.
It’s such a cruel twist of the knife to think that that’s how they were before. We’ve only really seen Vincent’s one-on-one dynamic with Ava, Mary, and Beatrice, but this ease, this familiarity with Lilith is something completely different. Given her family’s history with the OCS and her claim that she’s trained harder than anyone else, she was probably one of the closest to him.
Their embrace is that of a father and daughter. This was someone she could laugh with, lean on, confide in. Someone she trusted to take care of her. Now it’s just a part she plays on paper so that she can get her real family back.

Chapter 15
Bea gets some time alone, though, not for long. Lilith gets put on her ass. Shannon wrecks some donuts. Bea takes a nap in the sun. Shannon shares what brought her to the order and plays some football. Mother Superion gets a gift.
The streets were buzzing, people out and about, waving to each other as they exchanged pleasantries and confections. Flower stands were set up on every block with a line forming at each one.
Shannon glanced over. Beatrice was in awe, her jaw was unhinged. Beatrice hadn’t thought so many colors could fill these streets when she’d first arrived, so nervous she hardly noticed anything about the town. “Beautiful, right?”
It was all Beatrice could do to nod as she continued to take it in. It felt like something off of a calendar page or a postcard, or maybe even a movie. Like Beatrice was here to experience it by observing, but here she was, inside it all—the smell of roasted chestnuts swirling around her with the breeze. The colors danced to life around her in the morning sun.
Beatrice simply nodded, still taking it all in as she followed Shannon around the corner, the smell of fresh pastries nearly smacking her in the face in the best way. It smelled wonderful, a little bit like comfort. Not only that, Beatrice was thrilled, but it meant her sinuses were clearing.
She hadn’t been out of Cat’s Cradle since she’d arrived, but she did recognize this bakery. The one with the nice man, the first person to call her ‘Sister.’ The one who sent her in the direction of these women Beatrice so painfully hoped were her family now, with the lingering taste of the sweet dough on her tongue.
Shannon had been so excited to take Beatrice to the bakery. Juan David was one of the nicest men with the best pastries. He often would bring them to mass to sell, always bringing extras for several sisters. It always made Shannon smile to see him, plus he would always give her a little treat, often one for Mary and Lilith as well.
The bell clangs off the door when Shannon holds it open for Beatrice, a fresh wave of the smell wafting through the air as she does. The warmth wrapped around them and soothed the sting of the cool morning air against Beatrice’s cheeks and the tip of her nose. “Ah, Hermana Shannon, me preguntaba cuándo vendrías. ¡Feliz día de todos los santos! ”
“¡Hola, Juan David! ¡Feliz día de todos los santos! He traído una amiga.” Shannon squeezed Beatrice’s shoulder as she ushered her further into the bakery. It was almost like Shannon was presenting Beatrice to the man. She held the young sister in front of her so he could see her, like someone would introduce a child. “ Ella es la Hermana Beatrice.”
Beatrice blinked up at Shannon, surprised. It shouldn’t have come as one, but hearing the Spanish roll so effortlessly off Shannon’s tongue for the first time was unexpected. Her American accent was hardly what Beatrice would call thick, but between her and Mary at a convent full of other sisters from all corners of the world, the abrupt vowels and rounded consonants seemed to stand out.
“¡La Nueva Hermana! Me alegra que pudiera encontrar el convento.” The man's smile was fonder than it had any right to be as he shot her a wink like they shared some sort of secret. Beatrice hadn’t interacted with him but the once, months ago. He had been kind then, but she hadn’t thought much about him since.
“ Hola ,” Beatrice greeted quietly as she ducked her head to hide the blush like she’d somehow been caught with a secret, especially when Shannon leaned over her with a questioning quirk to her eyebrow, requesting an explanation. It wouldn’t be coming from Beatrice, though. She stood shyly at Shannon’s side, her hands buried in her pockets so she didn’t need to fight the fidgeting so hard under Shannon’s inquisitive gaze.
Beatrice’s shyness didn’t delay Shannon’s silent request long. Juan David jumped on the opportunity almost immediately with a deep chuckle. He swung that same towel over his shoulder, momentarily planting his hands on the glass when he started explaining. It was a much more lively story than their brief interaction deserved, but as the story shifted into conversation, Beatrice was content just to listen, warm in the little bakery as her eyes tracked the variety of pastries and breads in the glass. The artistry of them all.
Beatrice wasn’t sure; it could have been anywhere between five and twenty minutes of listening to Shannon and Juan David's chatter as he filled box after box of pastries. Buñuelos de viento. Huesos de Santo. Panellets. He even told Shannon he would be out after his son took over the bakery to fry fresh pestiños and roast chestnuts.
With a smile, Shannon told him she called the first pestiños when he finally made it out. One of the little traditions they had developed over the years. Shannon’s first year, she’d been so sad. So reflective as she sat at the edge of the football field adjacent to the church, just watching. Juan David had come bearing a plate stacked with some pastries, claiming the first of the day was always the best. Slightly more gooey. He had been right, and every year since she’d received the first one and a hug, “de un padre.”
Juan David was closing the last box of pastries when Shannon turned back to Beatrice, that warm glint in her eye to match the bakery. “Ready, Trouble?”
Beatrice nodded as she stood leaning heavily on the counter, waiting for Shannon to tell her it was time to move on. Shannon passed her a pox of the pastries as a silent request for her to carry it.
Beatrice knew what it was. She knew what Shannon was doing. She wasn’t stupid.
It was only one out of 6 boxes. Shannon wasn’t letting her do much but clearly didn’t want Beatrice to feel like she wasn’t helping at all. It was nice of her; Beatrice understood that much, but it also took some wind out of her sails. Even when Juan David handed her a smaller pastry box with his toothy grin, “ Para Madre Superion .”
“ Gracias ,” Beatrice nodded with a smile as she held the door open for Shannon.
“ Hasta luego, Hermana Beatrice .” His grin was cheeky in a way Beatrice couldn’t make sense of. Like she was missing the joke's punch line, though she did have the vague inclination that it was some sort of strange  “I told you so.”

So we know why everyone in the gang joined the OCS except Mother Superion. Beatrice wanted to not be gay, essentially. Camila’s dad died and she noticed her mom couldn’t afford to feed them both. Lilith was basically born into it (which raises a few plot holes, but whatever). Mary was the daughter of a (justifiable) murderer and was convinced to become part of something bigger than herself by Vincent.
But I really wanna know about Shannon. I wanna know why she joined the convent. I wanna know how she came to be the halo bearer. I need it.

they’re never yours. they never last.
There are a number of lines in s2 that I believe were originally intended for Mary, but were given to various other characters due to their importance to the story and executing the emotional arcs of the season. In particular, I keep coming back to Camila’s intercession to Beatrice’s doubt concerning Ava. The conversation between Beatrice and Camila is lovely - someone offering back to Beatrice what she so freely offers others, whatever she needs. It shows how Camila is more perceptive than she gets credit for, but also speaks to how the normally mission-driven Beatrice has shifted her dedication to Ava in a way that everyone can see.
However, the lines Camila says about the Warrior Nun?
“It’s easy to fall in love with the Warrior Nun. It’s loving the Warrior Nun that’s the hard part. They’re never yours. They never last.”
They have Mary written all over them.
We haven’t seen or heard about Camila having any special relationship with the Warrior Nuns of her time, which is likely just Shannon and maybe Suzanne. She’s the young recruit - new and shiny and still impulsive, not yet a part of the main team at the beginning of the show. She wasn’t even there when Shannon died. It doesn’t exactly make sense for Camila to have this evolved emotional understanding of the pitfalls of a close relationship with the Warrior Nun if she was never close to one herself.
Mary, on the other hand, did. Mary who ignored Ava and the halo in the beginning to find out what happened to Shannon. Mary who trusted her instincts when they told her something was off, something was wrong with how Shannon was killed.
Mary who was the closest to Shannon. Mary alone who was wrapped in Shannon’s arms in the photograph in Shannon’s cell.
Mary who, along with the others, resented Ava for not being Shannon. Mary who understood Ava more than the rest because of her relationship with Shannon. Mary who resented the halo for what it did to Shannon.
Mary who was ready to watch Duretti burn for what she thought he did to Shannon. Mary who ran into a horde of possessed people because of Vincent and Adriel and what they did to Shannon.
It's Mary who knows what it's like to fall in love with a Warrior Nun. What it's like to love a Warrior Nun. What it's like to so desperately want someone who has sworn to give their life to a higher calling.
It's Mary who understands that the duty of the Warrior Nun means she can never give all of herself to you.
It's Mary who loved Shannon.
It’s Mary who would have seen Beatrice laid bare in the aftermath of it all – her devotion to Ava, the cracks in her façade, the arms length she tries to keep between herself and the truth.
It’s Mary who would have seen herself reflected in Beatrice’s struggle and who would have offered her the salvation of truth.
And it’s Mary, the woman who lost Shannon and never gave up on the injustice of her death, who would offer Beatrice this fellowship:
It was easy to fall in love with Shannon. It was difficult to love Shannon. She was never mine. She would never last.
And I loved her anyway.

The more times I rewatch Warrior Nun, and let’s be honest - we’re streaming all day, everyday - Mary and Shannon were absolutely more than friends. And I’m pissed we didn’t get Mary in season 2 because that storyline as Beatrice tried to sort out her feelings for Ava? Omg it would have been amazing. And now that it’s cancelled? Get fucked Netflix, we deserve at least a season 3, if not more, so we can bring Mary back and get the closure we deserve. Like what the fuck
