MEATLOAF AT A BROTHEL
So my husband Justin, and I have this client in Texas that we frequently drive out to Texas for work. It’s typically about four and a half hours to get there from were we live. We always look forward to these trips because, It’s just nice to change the scenery sometimes. And it is more convenient transporting video production equipment from the comfort of your own vehicle versus checking in your equipment at the airport.
On one of our drives back home we discovered this really good local restaurant in Gainesville Texas that we stop half way for lunch. Its called Sarah’s.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Gainesville, I’m not much help because I’m not really familiar with it outside of this amazing restaurant and that its in a really cool, small and historic Guthrie-styled town. If your traveling through Texas definitely hit up the Google and check it out!
We couldn’t find any parking in the front of this large historic building so we pulled around to the back in a creepy looking ally way by some dumpsters... Having just left a video/photo shoot the car was loaded up with a lot of expensive gear that I just didn’t trust there. So we decided to bring our main gear inside with us to eat... Now, when I say main gear... I’m really meaning most expensive gear!
Lugging these big camera bags around we walk down the sidewalk and see a lot of interesting small mom and pop shops, despite my husband’s intrigue, I’m not really tempted by the hungry hippo joint on the walk, so we pursue to our intended destination.
This trip would be our fourth time to visit this small town joint. It feels so homie, When you walk in the atmosphere is so restful, peaceful and just plain pleasant. It makes you want to unplug and just kick it old school. As soon as you walk in you see that it reminds you of your mom’s house or maybe your grandma and grandpa’s place.
All of the table and chairs are separated by different dining set themes, leaving it up to the guest to pick the set that best reminds them of their home. We typically pick one of two tables that reminds us of our parents for some reason or another.
The natural lighting inside is so beautiful because of these huge windows at the main entrance. Your view is quaint looking out, you don’t really see hardly any traffic because well, your in Gainesville I guess. Mostly people walking by with their family, bicycle riders, dog walkers and of course the birds and butterflies flying around. This little town should be called pleasant-ville!
Their food is so amazing! I always get the old fashioned meatloaf with brown gravy, hand picked green beans and hand mashed potatoes with a fresh iced glass of peach tea...
So satisfying! I don’t know what it was about this restaurant that drew me in... Because there is just so many positive things about it that I just adore. It’s right next door to a three story antique shop.
Which I decided to go to after finishing up “my half” of the Reese’s peanut butter cream pie that we both usually share. But this time it was so good, I really felt bad for Justin because I devoured it and only left him just a little not enough to truly call half... But man was it worth it! My husband decided to stay in the restaurant and people watch, and for all I know order himself a pie that he so rightfully deserved while I walked next door and check out the antiques.
I bought a couple of cute items that I thought was pretty unique, and walked back over to Sarah’s to gather my husband and gear and head out. Walking in I see my husband finishing up a long conversation with the waitress that he looked very interested in.
Naturally I assumed that maybe I stayed in the antique shop too long and I had been ratted out.. To my surprise, I was absolutely wrong. They were talking about the history of the building.
The waitress informed him that it started out in the 1800’s with a saloon at the bottom of the building and a brothel upstairs.
She even went on to point out a bullet hole in one of the original glass windows upstairs towards the brothel’s entrance.
She also mentioned that the building was owned by a girl named Sara who ran the brothel and also was married to the bartender that ran the saloon... Wow.
Who would have thought that years later, fast forwarding to present day, a couple from Oklahoma would be passing by stopping into a quaint little local bed and breakfast for lunch to eat meatloaf, not even realizing it used to be a brothel and saloon...
Probably filled with the most wicked people in town... No telling what kinds of crimes had taken place in this building, if only the bullet penetrated glass windows could talk...
It got me and my husband thinking about how God can take something bad and turn it around for good. Romans 8:28 says that, “And we know that in all things God works for the Good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
For me, I think finding myself eating meatloaf in a brothel is an unusual way for God to teach me a lesson. But That’s usually kind of how it typically goes for me... To get really real for a second, I’ve struggled a lot with walking in confidence in my Identity in Christ. Struggling with self doubt and dealing with condemnation, I’ve learned that a lot of these “trust” issues boil down to the simple fear of feeling not worthy of God’s love. That I can’t ever be good enough for Him to truly love me. But you know how silly this is?
First of all God first loved me and you. Check out, 1 John 4:19 “We love because he first loved us.” Secondly I’m reminded that I am a new creation in Christ Jesus. It seems to me the devil wants to keep us not focused on this little detail of redemption so that we stay in a constant state of self doubt, unworthiness and fear of failure. That all lead to simply not trusting in God. Wow, now that’s a big one.
The Enemy already knows that he’s lost the battle, which is why the only tactic he has left is trying to get us (the body of Christ) to forget who we really are, or worse... To believe that we are something that we are not.
But the good news my friends is that if you made Jesus Christ the Lord of your life, you are indeed a new creation in Christ. Your old nature has passed away and you are new... NEW!!!! Your old way of thinking, acting and being is different now!
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Corinthians 5:17
So, if your struggling with any of the things I was struggling with... Stop!!! Because you can rest in your identity in Christ. Just remember that God is with us and He never will leave us, oh yeah and don’t forget that you are Loved. If you mess up, repent and run back to Daddy God. Don’t let the enemy beat you up to keep you stagnant. Move on and find your joy again, you are a NEW CREATION!
