The Tail of Emily Windsnap - Liz Kessler

It's MerMay! And I'd like to kick it off by recommending one of my favourite mermaid books of all time!

Emily Windsnap is a twelve-year-old girl who discovers she is part-mermaid when her legs transform into a tail the first time she submerges herself in water. This discovery leads her to a fantastical underwater world where she meets her mermaid best friend, Shona Silkfin, goes to mermaid school, explores sunken shipwrecks, and even manages to break her long-lost merman father out of an underwater prison!

I found this at the Scholastic Book Fair and absolutely fell in love with it! It has everything a middle-grade mermaid story could want and more, and I still enjoy re-reading it as an adult. It was originally a trilogy, but at some point since deciding to end the series there, the author changed her mind and continued writing about Emily's adventures, so now there are 9 books and I am almost caught up! The whole series is a lot of fun, full of magic, friendship, and mythical creatures — plus the covers are all really pretty!

Which Game of Thrones/House of the Dragon characters would all the Emily Windsnap characters be?

Ooooh glad you asked!! Lemme see...

Emily = Arya Stark/Jon Snow/Daenerys. Arya because she's this preteen tomboy who runs away from her family on all sorts of adventures. Jon Snow because she's the product of forbidden love and later the hero or "Chosen One" of some cryptic prophecy. Daenerys because she can magically communicate with animals (Emily with the Kraken and narwhal, Daenerys with her dragons).

Shona = Sansa Stark, for her love of all things girly like pretty dresses and singing, and especially love stories.

Mary P. = Lyanna Stark or Yara Greyjoy. They're all tomboyish women who loves "masculine" pastimes (sailing for Mary and Yara, horseback riding&fighting for Lyanna). And just like Lyanna, Mary P. fell in forbidden love with a man and secretly bore his child, and was tragically separated from her man. Also Mary P. and Yara both fiercely care for their loved ones. Mary P. would absolutely sail to the ends of the earth to rescue Jake and fight his captors, just like Yara did for Theon!

Jake = Rhaegar Targaryen. They're both men who love poetry and defy gender roles with their more stereotypically feminine pastimes (jewelry-making for Jake, singing for Rhaegar). And they both fell in forbidden love with a woman who secretly bore their love child who later becomes the hero.

Aaron = Bran Stark. Both brooding dark-haired emo boys with magical powers, and again somehow involved in some prophecies.

Mr. Beeston = Tywin/Jaime Lannister. Like Tywin he's the old scheming royal advisor to a corrupt king. Even doing some pretty nasty things for his king in the process. Like Jaime he's an antihero who's not nice to kids, but after a series of trials turn around and help said kids (and everyone else) by the end.

Mystic Millie = Helaena Targaryen. Both women who believe in their cryptic visions and dreams, and who seem completely weird to everyone else.

Neptune = Robert Baratheon. Both corrupt kings with short tempers who sleep around with lots of women (Neptune has his wives, Robert has his whores) and who have hundreds of children, yet still pine for the one dark-haired woman they loved but sadly died (Aurora/Lyanna).

Now I'm imagining if Emily Windsnap was rewritten for the Game of Thrones target demographic XD.

More Emily Windsnap goodness. Sketchdump of mostly Aurora and Shona, plus a work in progress on one of many Emily Windsnap art requests I received. Not taking anymore requests now, but will let y’all know next time I do.

For a long time I imagined Aurora from the medieval Middle Ages, with all the mentions of her castle. But Book 7 clarifies Aurora lived about ~500 years ago, I realized this means she could’ve lived during the Renaissance a.k.a. the Tudor era. Perfect for my Tudor Dynasty-obsessed heart ❤️ (I had a big Tudor phase for a while). So I drew Aurora in both medieval-era and Tudor era dresses, to see what would look better on her. What do y’all think ?

Yay 2 asks! I used to ship Emily x Aaron. Especially in Book 4. But after that, seeing how Emily keeps...

picking fights with Aaron because she misjudged his innocent gestures

questioning her relationship with him

jumping to the worst conclusions about him

ogling other boys and comparing how handsome they are to Aaron, WHILE she's still dating Aaron!

...they're really better off as just friends. Nearly all the problems in their relationship are Emily's fault, and Aaron is always the better person. Honestly Aaron deserves someone better. I'm just glad Emily and Aaron eventually broke up. Maybe Liz Kessler was building up to that.

I honestly think Emily x Shona would be a much better couple! Their "friendship" is much more reciprocal. They're both constantly changing and learning how to be better friends to each other. For being "friends" for only a year, they act like they've known each other for years. With they way they share all their innermost thoughts and secrets. And how they always miss each other. And GOOD GOSH the lesbian subtext between these two...

Emily/Shona’s extremely close female friendship despite having other female friends

The repeated rainbow motifs (Rainbow Rocks, Jake’s rainbow jewelry )

The Rainbow Rocks being a secret meeting spot both for forbidden interspecies couples, and for their forbidden interspecies friendship
