Some people who have never played a tokimemo title seem to think it's an adults game but it's actually like this:

SiCKtM: the horrors of time travel
Tumblr media
In Action Button’s 6hr Tokimeki Memorial review, Tim Rogers brings up, meaningfully, how he effectively erased (and avoided) certain experiences he had with characters in the game. Experiences that were significant. Experiences that were a gift from the characters who gave them. Characters who opened up their heart. Opened up part of themselves that no one else was permitted to have. They, in doing so, made the player a part of themselves. Part of the whole of themselves. Into them Tim was pulled. Into them he engulfed. And in them they were both warmed.
But… this he could not allow. (small spoilers begin)
If he wanted to accomplish his goal of romancing Shiori Fujisaki, of being with his childhood best friend grown apart by an unknown force, then he had to do everything right. He had to learn from every mistake. Learn from every triumph. Note every detail. Every realization. On not just her, but the other 11 girls who may or may not become romanceable. May or may not become romantically interested. In his own words…
And when we decide we finally know enough to romance her, we by necessity objectify her with a Swiss watchmaker’s attention to detail. When we romance Shiori Fujisaki, our erstwhile whimsical return to highschool acquires the cold fatalism of factory work. [04:59:10-04:59:30]
He goes further to say…
To win Shiori Fujisaki, I had to… well, first I had to… consider her an object… that could be won. Consider her a trophy. And then I had to adopt the mentality of a Swiss watchmaker who was also a brain surgeon who was also a stockbroker who was also a robot programmer who was also a serial killer. My… final experience reliving virtual highschool was liquid stress. Injected into my veins... again and again. These… grim cold stresses etched the skeleton of real love. Dredging up… many dusty ghosts in my old mind. [05:00:03-05:00:46]
And finally…
In order to win Shiori on the... PC Engine in 1994, you needed to become as… encyclopedic as creepy-eyed Yoshio. And… you needed to bury that calculatedness under a mountain of... performative social graces. [05:02:42-05:02:56]
And so he reverted. Reloaded a previous save. Undid the progress he unintendedly had with the girls he didn’t want in favor of the sole girl he did want. Erased them. Their shared selves. Their open hearts. Their feelings grown. Every part of them that was inconvenient to the end goal. Every part of them that was a hindrance, a complication to the endeavor. The great work. They tertiary. Just obstacles. Mere means of accomplishment. And what does that say about the player. What does that say about… time travel?
Tumblr media
There was a 2014 action-packed subtle romance called Edge of Tomorrow (not shown above) starring Nicole Kidman’s ex and Emily Blunt (the woman who can do everything) wherein said ex (painfully) gained the ability to return by death. And in doing so… learn. See, this ex needed a woman’s help to achieve his own end goal. His own great work. And it wasn’t a matter of using her or anything like that. They both had the same goal equally. For she too could return by death, but no more. Having lost it, she understood he was her best bet for the great work. And being alone in this experience, this repetitious trauma. This... phenomenon, she was his best bet for everything. Both knowledge and skill. But also understanding and… warmth.
So they worked together. Daily. Repeatedly. After every death, he’d return to her. Reintroduce himself to her. Remind her. This new her. New and yet old her. Again and again.
Tumblr media
And what else could possibly happen? When two people with identical traumas who’ve lived similar lives spend enough time? Together in battle. Together in death. Together alone. Can’t be helped. The closeness can’t be helped. The knowing can’t be helped. The wish for not knowing can’t be helped. Not knowing the things the one without isn’t yet ready to say. Not knowing the things the one without isn’t yet ready to feel. Not knowing all the ways the one without became. Not knowing all the ways the one without will become. Not knowing everything someone who’s loved you time after time can only know.
How can one live with this? This horror? How can one continue to feel through this? This horror? How can one choose to continue this? This horror?
Well, in this ex’s case there was no choice. The horror would find him eventually. And so he braves it. Endlessly. Again and again.
Tumblr media
Just like a certain Subaru (shown above) from the series Re:Zero, there is no choice. Not in the canon anyway.
The only way out was to ignore his obsession infatuation for the silver-haired girl. To stop trying to save her. To stop trying to be near her. To let it end how it ends and walk away.
But he can’t. He cannot turn away. Surely a mixture of hormones aswell as empathy, but he can’t nonetheless. And he won’t.
Again and again, he’ll ride in. Time after time, he’ll find a way. He won’t quit. He can’t.
He already loves her. He already knows her. And her found family aswell. He knows everyone. More than their new old selves would like him to. More than their new old selves are ready for him to. And he cannot should not shall not say a thing. They can never know how much he knows. How much he’s seen. How many times they’ve died. Only a witch could possibly understand. And to his knowledge the only one left is the same who cursed him. So on he walks. Through the endless bodies of his old new selves. Quietly. Alone. But eventually, inevitably… loved all the same.

"And Suda immediately replied with this...darkness in his face, this urgent darkness. He said "dude, you should play it anyway." Then at the door he turned around in a, in a sort of Columbo motion and spoke a strange sentence I realize today I never forgot. He said "Make sure you make your birthday and Shiori Fujisaki's birthday the same day, and make sure it's a bank holiday in March of 1997."
