What do you think about Meagan Duhamel's opinion on how Satoko could improve her jumps? She said Satoko has to strengthen her calf, ankle, hips & glutes for more power. Rebuild jumps & just do doubles to get more strength, speed & lift into it until its muscle memory then integrate the triple jumps. But her most interesting take is that Satoko has to rotate faster as she noticed Satoko rotates on the way down. I found the 3rd pt the most unusual as people usually says its Satoko's rotates fast.

I’m just a skating fan so I can’t form much of a qualified opinion on what Satoko should do to improve her jumps, but I have listened to Meagan Duhamel’s interview with TSL and I’ve read other people’s takes.

The first thing that comes to my mind is that most people don’t take her extremely long time of rehabilitation into consideration. Everyone knows the story about her injury, her long time off ice and the fact that she only started to practice her jumps properly in October 2017. But these details are still not given a lot of importance when people discuss her technique now. Basically what I’m saying is that it’s so difficult to do a proper evaluation of her jumps in the state that they’ve been throughout the 2017-2018 season.

The way I see it, her jump technique has been on ‘survival mode’ all this time because there was not enough time to improve it or rebuild it for the Olympics so they ultimately worked with what they had. A lot of time was spent on recuperating as much as they could because Satoko was dealing with hip inflammation and struggling to land triples up until 2 months before Japanese Nationals. Just rewatch her programs at NHK Trophy, every single commentator and most skating fans really doubted her chances to recover in time to compete with the deep field in Japan and get one of the 2 Olympic spots. Her own coach Mie Hamada said there was no way she could make it to Pyeongchang and that it was better to aim for Beijing 2022. The situation was bad enough that rebuilding the technique was probably the last thing on their list of priorities.

I’ve noticed differences between her jumps pre and post injury + rehab. First of all she’s lost some of her power and implicitly some of the spring needed to take off. Her 3Lo for instance was one of her better jumps and this season she struggled with rotating it. She lost the feel of her jumps in a way that sometimes her body was leaning forward on the take off of her toe jumps. She lost the timing and struggled with getting it right most noticeably on the 3S. Basically her jumps this season have maybe had 50-60% of their former quality. Take her FS at Worlds - with the probable exception of the 3Lo, all of the other issues I’ve mentioned were present.

With every competition this season, I always doubted the quality of her jumps and not to my surprise (but to the surprise of other people who were used to what she could do before the stress fracture happened) her performances were on the most part inconsistent. There was only one competition where her jumps were the closest to their former quality and that was the Olympics - I don’t know how she did it in those couple of days but the respect I already had for her as an athlete and competitor increased a lot more.

They’ve got a lot of work to do from now on, all the while taking all the risks of getting another stress fracture into consideration. Her coaching team has mentioned before; if she gets another one as serious as the first, then her career would truly be over. She has a jump coach (Yamato Tamura) and a personal trainer (Shinichi Demizu) who has worked with her on strengthening her muscles so what Meagan said about calf, ankles, hips, glutes and all that - I tend to believe that Satoko and her trainer have already been covering that.

I know Meagan was answering TSL’s question about what she would do if she were Satoko’s coach but I will reformulate the question: what would Meagan do if she was coaching a skater who has had to overcome a stress fracture in her hip joint, go through 11 months of rehabilitation, stay almost a year out of competition, lose all of her triples and get them back as soon as possible to go to the Olympics, deal with all the consequences that come with having very low bone density, an army of domestic competitors breathing down her neck and a pushy federation that almost forced her to go to Worlds 2017 with a broken hip because they believed they had higher chances of keeping 3 spots if she went there?
