2. Why do you write fanfiction?

I was saying to someone recently that I love fandom and fanfiction because it extends the life of these fictional worlds that we fall in love with. With fandom, any tv show is longer than six seasons. Any book is longer than a single book... BUT that doesn't really answer the question because I don't write fic for every fandom that I enjoy and participate in otherwise, so... Honestly? I don't know where it comes from. I never know what characters are gonna pitch a tent in the part of my brain that generates all these ideas. It's a connection I make with the characters (she says, as if they're real fucking people). They just decide to live here, and, once they do... I write because they won't shut the fuck up if I don't. So, there's that, and there's also the community that I just love being a part of. IDK, man. It's all just very special to me.

4. Are there any writers that inspire you?

Bro (gn), you know you do. Plz, MJ. You and so many other writers in my current fandom and previous fandoms have inspired me to write. I mean, @nontoxic-writes, @lilythesilly, @stereopticons, @blackandwhiteandrose, @sarahlevys, @dinnfameron, @fishyspots (miss u bb), @ratchet (also miss you), @wordthieve, @rmd-writes, and my new BFF, @hgejfmw-hgejhsf!? There are too many to name tbh. I have been so fortunate to be surrounded by soooooo much talent. For fuck's sake, @designatedgrape made me give a shit about baseball. BASEBALL! I cannot believe. There are so many authors whose work leaves me feeling super inspired and wanting to write. You've all made me better at stringing words together through your writing. Also blowing a kiss to Lemony Snicket.

25. Have you ever daydreamed about side adventures/spin-offs from your fic? Tell us about them!

There are a couple spin-off fics that I wish I could download straight from my brain without having to write them, lol. In the 'The Outside Edge' universe, for example, there's a whole thing in my head where Stevie runs into Ruth—her former skating rival—at Nationals and they fall in love. Also Patrick's POV of AWSTRI(ATW) and David's POV of my first SC fic.

WIP Wednesday

So I definitely started a new thing today. Because deadlines. In one afternoon my brain went from I have no idea what I'm gonna do to Oh shit this is gonna be a lot and may be a problem. Whoops 😅

June 1939

Alexis lazily stretches her arms above her head from where she and Twyla have been lying for the last hour or so. In their meadow just outside of town, an endless sea of blooming wildflowers that sway like ocean waves every time the warm breeze blows.

Of course it’s not actually their meadow, but that doesn’t stop Alexis from secretly thinking of it that way. It’s the place they’ve been coming to since Twyla first showed her over two years ago. Twyla said it was where she liked to come and just be. That she had never shared it with anyone else.

Sometimes they meet to gossip, or pick flowers. Usually both. Other times, it’s because Moira is particularly overcome by a failed production, dramatically wailing that her career is over. In those instances Alexis sneaks out of the house, grabbing Twyla before stealing away to their spot.

Today they met for lunch and to enjoy each other’s company. Twyla packed some bread, fruit, cheese, and homemade tea to share. Alexis brought a blanket for them to spread on the ground. When their bellies were full, the lunch basket was set in a corner so they could lie down side by side.

In the fall, Alexis is supposed to begin college, so she’s trying to enjoy as many of these lazy days as she can. She doesn’t really want to go, but her parents insist she should because they have the money or whatever. That she should feel grateful for having an opportunity most young women will never get. She wants to travel and have adventures. To see the world. Not become some conversation piece for Johnny and Moira to tell their friends about at parties. Besides, they sent David and all that did was turn him into an art snob.

“Hey, Lex?” Twyla asks.

“Yeah, Twy?”

“You’ll still come home for holidays, right?”

“Obviously.”

“Will you write?” Twyla fidgets with a loose thread on her dress.

“Really?” Alexis turns her head, lowering her sunglasses. “All the time. I’ll write so many letters you’ll be sick of me.”

Twyla swallows audibly, still staring at the clouds overhead. “I don’t think that’s possible.”

1. Are you named after anyone?

I chose my alias in part for my dad, but my parents named me after my mom's favorite aunt. I didn't get to know her (she died very young), but I hear she was pretty cool.

2. When was the last time you cried?

This morning lol.

3. Do you have kids?

Nah. I like kids, but I especially like them when I get to give them back to their parents at the end of the day. Under the right circumstances, though, I wouldn't be opposed to co-parenting.

4. What sports do you play/have played?

I have never heard of a sport.

5. Do you use sarcasm?

Often... especially as a coping mechanism for being sad or stressed. Why be sincere when you can be funny?

6. What's the first thing you notice about people?

I think the best way to phrase this is, like... how they carry themselves. Do they seem confident? Insecure? Nervous? Shy? Outgoing? I tend to match people's energies and try to make them feel comfortable, so this is a big part of that.

7. What’s your eye color?

Hazel

8. Scary movies or happy endings?

I mean, if I have to choose... I choose happy endings, BUT I don't really see why that has to be a dichotomy...

9. Any talents?

I can sing very well, and I can act. I won't call myself a triple-threat because, tbh, choreography is not my strong suit. I've got the rhythm but I am always on the wrong foot lmao. My theatre teacher in high school would very often yell, "OTHER FOOT [REDACTED]!" I also know a lot of random facts about stupid shit because I have a talent for absorbing information (and I will go full-on Stevie Ruins Everything if you let me... which I guess is both a talent and an annoyance). I'm also a speed reader with high comprehension.

10. Where were you born?

Houston, Texas (baby).

11. What are your hobbies?

Writing, reading, theatre, word puzzles, some light gaming

12. Do you have any pets?

I have two dogs.

13. How tall are you?

5'5 and a half

14. Favorite subject in school?

Theatre and chorus, if those count. If not, English.

15. Dream job?

I very frequently fantasize about quitting everything and opening up either a doggie daycare or this café/art gallery that lives in my brain — or a café that does coffee and pastries in the morning, but wine/beer and desserts in the evenings with, like, open mic nights and other things like silly painting classes and whatever.

Rec [written by doingthemost]: This is a super cute, fluffy Christmas moment between these two. Twyla's conflict over what to get Alexis for the holiday is so relatable and realistic, and the payoff of the actual gift—and Alexis' reaction!—is so worth it.

SUMMARY: On the rooftop of his gallery in New York City, David and a friend get introspective (and high) about life and love.

Rec [written by petalwrites]: This pre-canon slice of introspection is such a beautiful and emotional look into David’s headspace before Schitt’s Creek. It really makes you appreciate his growth throughout the show. (It does feature a canon character from another universe, but no knowledge of that show is needed.)

SUMMARY: When Twyla Sands' pumpkin pie disappears from the table, she goes on a quest to discover the thief.

Rec [written by petalwrites]: This is the insight into Twyla’s family that we all needed. Full disclosure, this slice of absolute silliness was written as a glorious gift for me, personally, but I highly recommend it to anyone who needs something to make them smile. It also now has an accompanying podfic!

Years later, Stevie reflects on their friendship and wonders if it’s possible that they could be something more.

There’s the old, battered quilt on the foot of the bed that David said didn’t go with the decor, but left it there for her anyway because he knew how much she loved it. There’s even a Sarah McLachan poster on the wall.

Ted's eyes bulge and his mouth gapes, he finds his pulse rocketing and then the heat of a full body blush as it washes over him. What the hell is going on? Why is his business rival half naked in his hotel room? And more importantly.. how the hell is he more ripped than Ted is?

David could go to the store, but he’d already told Patrick he won’t be there today. The café is out, too, and so is just taking a walk around town, for the same reasons—he might run into Patrick, or Stevie, or, god forbid, Sebastien. None of his usual options are going to work today, but if he doesn’t do something to get out and distract himself, he’s pretty sure he’s going to lose his fucking mind and end up locking himself in his mother’s closet.

He closes his eyes, focusing on his breathing again, and feeling his skin prickle with nervous energy. He flips through the mental Rolodex of limited distractions available to him without money, reliable means of transportation, or an elaborate disguise… and only one option comes to mind.

After beating Sebastien at his own game, David visits another former lover—but gets more than the simple distraction he was looking for.

Behind the Keyboard Volume 27

Behind the Keyboard is a series of interviews with different Schitt’s Creek fanfic authors. The series will last as long as there is interest (from authors) and capacity (from me). If you are an author from the Schitt’s Creek fandom who would like to participate, send a DM to this account.

Each author was given ten questions. The first five questions are the same for every author, the last five will vary.

How many fics have you written?

Oh, gosh. 140 total on AO3, across all fandoms, but countless others when I was younger, before AO3 even existed!

When did you publish your first fic on AO3?

2011. It's a Glee fic, featuring some rare ships—pretty on brand for me!—Quinn/Santana and Brittany/Artie.

Describe your writing process from “Oh, I have an idea” to pushing publish on AO3.

Usually, I try to put that idea somewhere as soon as possible. If it's just in my head, there's a high likelihood that I'm going to lose it, so I'll either write it down in Notion, DM it to a friend, post it in a Schitt's Creek discord, or all of the above! I try not to do the last two if I'm not somewhat serious about the idea, though, since the likelihood of it actually becoming something gets exponentially higher if someone has shown active interest in the idea or helped me workshop it.

No matter where I 'put it,' though, my next step is to think through the fic from start to finish. I have to be able to 'see' where it's going, what the purpose of the fic is, the way the characters are changed (or refused to be changed) by the events of the fic, etc. before I know that I'm actually going to write it. Sometimes that happens via capslocked screaming with a friend, sometimes it's just me daydreaming through a fic—and a lot of the time, it's both! I'll usually write this out in a series of bullets, but if I end up doing an outline, it ends up being a pretty detailed outline. I'll often write dialogue and narration/descriptions out in brackets, and a lot of the time I end up using it in the final fic. Here's an example from The Circle of Life in Northern Ontario: Turkey Hunting and You:

Starting point:

"the turkey shoot's very intense," david says to ruth the evening before, gesturing broadly with a glass of wine in his hand. (patrick manages to take the wine away from him before disaster strikes.)

alexis wrinkles her nose. "i still can't believe you did it."

"it's certainly something," twyla says, genial. "i went once, but it's never really been my thing. i just kept hearing the ghosts of turkeys past calling out to me while i was there."

"oh," ruth says, raising her eyebrows. stevie tries not to laugh. "i can see how that would be... distracting."

Ending point:

"The turkey shoot's very intense," David says to Ruth on Friday night, gesturing broadly with a glass of wine.

They're all at the cottage, perched on David and Patrick's sofa set, music playing in the background. Stevie's full and happy from dinner and dessert, and Ruth's running a hand through the ends of her hair while the five people that have somehow managed to worm their way into Stevie's heart take on the bulk of the conversation. It's comfortable; domestic, even. It's far beyond what Stevie could've ever imagined herself having ten years ago, five years ago, even five months ago.

There's nothing uncharitable about the way she looks at the Rose siblings, nothing but fondness in the way she rolls her eyes at Alexis' exaggerated shock as she turns to her brother. "I still can't believe you actually went."

"It's certainly something," Twyla says, genial. Stevie remembers how she used to share her sandwiches when they were kids, how they'd sometimes sit together on the bus. "I went once, but it's never really been my thing. I just kept hearing the ghosts of turkeys past calling out to me while I was there."

"Oh," Ruth says, raising her eyebrows. "I can see how that would be... distracting."

As much as I love to outline, though, I try to be flexible. A lot of the time, I need to add or remove stuff, or change the way that I think things are going to go. I try to let the characters be somewhat in charge in this regard.

From there, I will do some editing and nearly always have it read through by at least one more person. And then it goes to AO3 for publishing!

Tell me about your most recent fic? What do you love about it? Is there anything you think you could have done better?

My most recent published fic (as of 7/4/22!) is let's make up for lost time, which is a Rashomon-ish story of one hour, give or take, from three POVs: Alexis and Twyla, Stevie and Ruth, and David and Patrick. It was written for SC Pride Fest, and features a wonderful podfic by @sunlightsymphony.

I'm really happy with how the Rashomon-ish elements came out. I had a hard time figuring out how to link the three POVs and really make it feel like everything was happening all at the same time. I've participated in two other Rashomon pieces—The Best Is Yet To Come, with Amanita_Fierce, @b13-maybethistime, @januarium, @lisamc21, Little_Black_Bow, @petrodobreva, @schittposting, ships_to_sail, @sunlightsymphony, @unfolded73, and @yourbuttervoicedbeau, and The Blouse Barn Divorce Ranch, with Amanita_Fierce, @schitthappens, @danieljradcliffe, @delilahmcmuffin, @fishyspots, @godoflaundrybaskets, @hagface, @noahreids, @hullomoon, @januarium, @yourbuttervoicedbeau, @middyblue, @nontoxic-writes, @ratchet, @rhetoricalk, @roguebebe, @schittposting, ships_to_sail, @anniemurphys, @sparklesmagiclightlove, @sunlightsymphony, @swiftlythebest—but it felt easier to do Rashomon with multiple writers, who all naturally bring their own perspective to writing different sides of a story. I'm glad that those who commented felt like that came through in the finished fic.

I do, however, think I could've done a better job of the story overall. I had a few things come up in my personal life, so I submitted this fic a week later than the writing deadline and wrote it on an abbreviated timeline. I tried to give each chapter some kind of emotional crux, but I'm not sure it came across as effectively in Stevie and Ruth's chapter in particular. I was also trying to keep this shorter for the sake of my podficcer, and I feel like the Alexis and Twyla and David and Patrick chapters could've used a little more fleshing out as far as Twyla and Patrick were concerned. For how quickly I wrote it, though, I'm pretty happy with it! And I highly recommend that everyone listen to Sunlight's pod. :)

What advice would you give to someone who’s thinking about publishing their fic for the first time?

Do it—especially if you're thinking about publishing a fic that would fall on the rare/gen side of fandom! I've heard from so many people who have said that my fics make them feel like they're not alone in wanting more about these characters or shipping things that don't get as much attention. That's exactly why I got into this fandom and why I stay involved in it: because I felt seen by things like your body's poetry (speak to me) by @anniemurphys (which also has a podfic by @hullomoon!) and I Offer You My Heart by @landofsonlali and @sunlightsymphony, and wanted to add my voice to the mix and write about characters, experiences, and stories that were important to me.

The other thing I'd tell them is that everyone has their own unique voice and perspective. Five people could write the exact same prompt five different ways. Fandom is all the better for more writers joining and bringing their own worldview to the party!

Do you think your fics have a brand? What is it?

Besides a predominant focus on Alexis and Twyla, shipped together or not, I think I tend to write about growing up, coming out, coming to terms with living within your queerness, and found family. I tend to have humorous elements to my writing, and I also tend to be extremely wordy.

How many unfinished WIPs do you have right now?

I have eleven somewhat-active WIPs, plus a smattering of ideas here and there.

Is there someone(s) who has made your writing better? In what way?

I am infinitely lucky to have found true, real friends in the rare/WLW corner of this fandom, too many to count. All of them have impacted my writing, but the people who have made me a better SC writer are: @anniemurphys and @landofsonlali, whose Alexis and Twyla characterizations deeply informed and inspired my own; @middyblue and @treepyful, who helped me come to terms with Stevie's prickly lil character and find her within me; and @lilythesilly, whose mind seems to move faster than my own and is an amazing cheerleader and plotter!

Most memorable comment you’ve had on one of your fics?

Every single comment I received on we'll get together then, dad, which is an "Alexis comes out to Johnny" fic I wrote because I was having feelings about my own coming out story, is the most memorable comment I've ever had. I loved hearing from people who felt the fic resonated with them.

What does a successful fic look like to you?

It's no secret that the rare/gen corner of this fandom gets significantly fewer hits, kudos, and comments. Sometimes, that's really hard for me to deal with after I put so much time and effort into a fic, and try my best to capture something meaningful to me and make it universal. So while the metrics are great, and I love to receive comments, that isn't the only way I can measure success—because if it were, receiving an average of 100 hits on a fic would make me feel very unsuccessful! (And sometimes, I really do feel that way.)

I try to focus on fics that I'm proud of, ones that I enjoy rereading (because the writing and storytelling doesn't make me cringe), and the rare times that I hear from readers either on Tumblr or via comments. While I wish the rare/gen corner got more attention, even just hearing from a few people makes me happy.

Snippet Sunday

“Actually, we broke up. A few weeks ago.”

David freezes. He turns shockingly pale and brings his hands up to his face. “Oh god,” he whispers, “not again.”

“No!” Rachel says at once, placing a hand on his arm, “It wasn’t your fault. Honestly. That night was amazing. For both of us. You were amazing.”

She debates for a second, how best to explain. She doesn’t want to out Patrick, even though he’d held David’s dick in his hand at one point.

“We realized that there was a reason it was the greatest night we’ve ever had together and it was because we weren’t just… together.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah. We never really clicked in that way. Looking back on it, a threesome was just our last ditch attempt to save the relationship.”

“Mm-kay, that information? Would have been very helpful to know beforehand.”

Rachel grimaces. “Sorry.”

“Me too,” David says, and she can tell he meant that sincerely.

WIP Wednesday/Thursday

@apothecarose tagged me- thank you! I needed something to take my mind off having to return to work tomorrow after six weeks off! Ugh!

David grabbed a blanket from the couch and joined Patrick on the swing. Stevie was sitting in her Adirondack, swirling the wine in her glass, staring out into the fire.

"So," David began, "you ready to tell us what's really going on?"

"With what?" Stevie asked, looking into her wine glass.

"You. I know there's something up. You know you can tell us anything…"

Stevie looked up and rolled her eyes, and took a deep breath and looked as if she was trying to prevent herself from crying.

"It's stupid," she said quietly.

"Stevie. You'll feel better just to let it out. Take it from me, I know. Keeping it in is not good for anyone…" Patrick said sincerely, taking David's hand in his and giving him a slight squeeze. David squeezed him back in affirmation.

"It's just, I thought things would be different for me by now? Not that I thought I would be married, or anything like that, but more settled, you know? I know I am not destined to have what you guys have. But, still, I thought… I'm not sure what I thought, to be honest. With my travel schedule the way it is, it's not like it's conducive for dating, let alone a relationship. And I don't even know if I would want that anyway. I like my life. I do, it's just… It would be nice to come home to someone. Don't get me wrong, I love you guys and love coming here, but I can't keep being the third wheel who you guys have to put up with. And I'm getting way too old to troll for randoms."

18. Are there any fics or authors that have been particularly influential or inspiring to you?

I mean... you, obviously. You literally wrote the first SC fic I ever read.

You, @stereopticons, and @lilythesilly are sooo good at getting into characters' heads and have helped me do the same — both by inspiring me with your stories and the way you all have betaed mine. I also really admire @wordthieve and @blueink3's very individual writing styles and their ability to create well-rounded stories. @dinnfameron's writing leans into the comedic elements of SC, and she's taught me to "find the funny" in any plot... in addition to encouraging me to think outside the box. She really has the most creative, fun AUs that totally break the mold. @designatedgrape's "You Are the Only, Only, Only," made me want to write Patrick's POV more often. @nontoxic-writes makes me FEEL SO MANY THINGS and several of her stories made me want to write more angst immediately after reading them, ngl. 😂

@sarahlevys lovingly pulled me towards the wlw, gen, and rare side of the SC fandom, which has been very influential to me as a writer. Not only has she encouraged me to explore more pairings, but she's made me more confident in writing a wider variety of characters within the universe. She also helped run @sctropefest back in the day, which was the first fest I participated in; that opened a whole new world of fandom for me.

Overall, the SC fandom got me writing for the first time in many, many, many years, and I will be eternally grateful for the way this community inspired me to create.

Warm Hellos and Our Last Goodnights This one is definitely a pride and joy of mine, despite it's more serious content. Well, really because of the more serious content. In all seriousness I have a very strong attachment to this work. There are many pieces of my own complicated coming out journey littered in every corner of it. Mapping out Eddie's journey from high school to adulthood was... let's just say I'm getting choked up thinking about it. It's safe to say I'm very proud of my Marshmallow. [Buck/Eddie, M]

My Favorite Color is You I both love this one and am quite proud of it. It's a level of E I hadn't really explored before and, while some of it could probably use some tweaks and fine tuning, I love the shit out of it. The Sound of My Heart My first attempt at fake dating. It was... a wild ride from a plot planning perspective. (I use the word planning incredibly loosely here). However, I'm rather impressed at Past Me's ability to research a city I hadn't been to since my senior year of high school [redacted] years ago. Researching train schedules and the New York Botanical Gardens was probably my favorite part of the whole experience. [David/Patrick, T]

Punctuation around dialog tags. Still a struggle but better than before.

Taking direction from my betas and applying those notes more consistently

Varying my word usage by eliminating duplicates and making more trips to the thesaurus.

2 resolutions

Writing multi-chapter works fully before publishing. I am terrible about this and often write myself into a corner.

Consistently adding more eyeballs to a doc for feedback.

Number 1 Favorite Line

This was insanely difficult to choose just one. I'm cheating and picking something from both fandoms:

I know all your secrets: “Never better. Should we exchange the usual my country wants you dead pleasantries first or is foreplay off the menu tonight?”

Whatever May Come: Technically only one line used multiple times, but I absolutely adore the repetition of I love you, I love you, I love you in chapter 23. There's just so much yearning packed into it.
