Part 1:

“Beta, you should take SheerKhurma to office this year too”

It was Maa’s last EID in 2017 and every year, she would make SheerKhurma with full josh for family, friends and for me to take it office too for the extended family. Maa was weak (physically) and somewhere she knew that her time is up.

It was already a week post EID and I had not taken SheerKhurma to office that year – Maa, on one of the mornings (just 3 to 4 days before she passed away), decided to make SheerKhurma. She couldn’t stand for too long, so she sat on the chair in the kitchen (near our washing machine) and gave instructions to wifey around how much quantity (of each ingredient) needs to be added and when to lower the flame and when to keep stirring.

As always, the SheerKhurma was delectable, and I returned home with empty containers. Maa passed away in a few days from that.

Part 2:

My daughter’s admission process is still on, she hasn’t yet been showing up on any of the college lists. Last to last weekend, we were getting messages that one of the colleges has already started admitting students in the “Gujarati” minority – we were like, our daughter has scored higher, we too have applied for the minority quota in the same college; how come we have not got any news on her admission.

It was a Saturday and was day 1 of us attending Muharrum sermons – I was tired by the time I returned home in the afternoon. One thing which kept playing on my mind was “what did we miss?”. I was getting restless and finally decided to go to the college in-person and find out (rather than waiting for online updates).

Daughter and I went to this college and figured out that in addition to the government forms, we also had to fill a separate online form specifically for this college too – and since we had not done that, my daughter’s name didn’t show-up in their list (despite scoring much higher than the cut-off). The forms were closed, and they said we don’t know when the next time we would be opening it again.

We returned with some clarity and hope that things will work out if we do this the right way.

Last Friday, the forms opened again, and I was like “chalo, let us get this done” – but it didn’t work-out this time too since the online form didn’t accept my daughter’s registration number – I kept trying like 100 times, but it just didn’t work. The next morning (Saturday), I again decided to go to the college with my daughter to seek answers). After going from one room to the other and waiting for an hour, we finally got to know that the forms have opened erroneously, and we would still have to wait for the next list.

We returned with more clarity and hope that things will work out if we do this the right way.

Maa had the hope that she would be able to make SheerKhurma, one last time and she did it…

We too have the hope that my daughter will get through in this college, if not this, some other college – kyunki “Ummeed pe duniya qayam hai” (for what's life without hope!)

“When are we going to Mohd Ali Road?”

“When are we getting SheerKhurma for Eid?”

 For the last several years, each year during Ramadan, there are colleagues who ask, “when do you plan to take us to Mohd Ali Road”, and we eventually end up gorging famous delicacies. As soon as Ramadan is done, the next question is “where is the sheerkhurma and where is the biryani”.

 Perhaps, last 2 years of the lockdown, was the only period that the above questions didn’t come up, and understandably so.

 This year, few of the colleagues again made this request and we planned an eating-out trip to Mohd Ali Road on one of the Sundays – we tried specialities at 2 places (“Bade Miya” and “Chinese & Grill”), before heading for some coolers at “Badshah Cold Drinks” (at Crawford Market). “Pet bhar gaya par dil nahi” (While the stomach is full, wish we could eat more!) was the sentiment after the 2 hours eating-out session.

 This week has been the Eid Celebrations (post completion of 30 days of fasting) and the requests started to come in “Bhai, when are we getting the SheerKhurma!?”

Well, it is time for some freshly made SheerKhurma in GW office today – planning to serve it by 11:30AM 😊

 These are rituals that we cannot miss, nahi?
