Something Within You (Part 1)
A/N: First of I seriously want to apologize. I’ve been gone for so long and I feel terrible about it. In fact, I have so many ideas and so many things I actually really really want to write and it frustrates me that I haven’t written any of them. If you are somehow reading this, I want to thank you; honestly. Thanks for sticking around even if I suck at keeping up my schedule. Really, thank you. I appreciate you, so much.
Word Count: 2542 Words Warnings: Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think there’s nothing.
Summary: Laszlo is scared of many things but on the top of that list is getting too attached. Not because of the actual attachment but, the fear of losing what you’ve grown attached to.
“But, you have to try!”
“Why? What would be the point?” A young man questioned the small winged humanoid on the desk next to him. His long hair faded from a dark color to an intense blue while his eyes were tinted in differents tones of hazel and green.
“What?” A woman with short light brown hair and dark skin spoke up to the male as he walked around the simple living space. “What is she talking about, Laszlo?”
“A ‘prophecy’, Essie,” Laszlo made quotations with his fingers as he rolled his eyes smoothly “apparently, someone or something has been created. It’s said that it gives the person in possession the ability to teleport through locations and through alternative dimensions. Somehow, someone managed to find a list of the places where it or they show up and, mysteriously, everyone everywhere has their own copy of the list. Now, everyone is looking for that and Forsythia wants me to join in on the treasure hunt.”
“So, is this potentially dangerous?” Essie asks, her eyebrows rising at finding that Laszlo wasn’t looking at either her or Forsythia in the eyes as he spoke.
“No, not really. It might be the most dangerous object in the universe but, an object can’t use itself. I guess it could be dangerous depending on who manages to find it. But, otherwise…”
“Laszlo! You’re not seeing it completely! You’re certain that what they’re all looking for is an object. What if it’s a living being? What if someone takes a living, breathing, aware individual against their will for the promised ability? The prophecy does say it could be something or someone.” The tiny winged female allowed her eyes to look between both friends. “Don’t you agree, Essie?”
“How could it be someone though?” The brunette spoke up again. “How could someone grant a power if they’re in ‘possession?’”
“Just try will you?” Forsythia turned to look at the silent male in worry. He was never silent and the fact that he was worried both girls immensely. “Please. What bad could it do? Even if someone tried to get in your way, you could do it.” He remained quiet for a moment, his eyes still not leaving the carpet floor of the living room until he managed to respond.
“Fine. I‘ll enjoy a challenge, I guess. Let’s find that list now. Come along, Essie.” His mood and attitude completely changed in a few seconds. He rushed out of the room in a smooth manner. The two remaining individuals in the room looked at each other in confusion and worry, before Essie attempted to catch up with Laszlo.
The female walked through the dimly lit corridor, a slightly opened door catching her attention as she walked passed. She placed her hand delicately on the wooden surface, pushing it opened softly only to find her friend sitting by his desk, his hand in his long hair. His computer screen lightened the room slightly as she quietly walked towards him and gently placed her hand on his shoulder.
“Hey,” she whispered gently “are you alright?”
“Yes, just thinking, is all,” he answered, sitting up straight and placing his hands on the keyboard “we should get started on this, now. I managed to find the list. It wasn’t too hard, to be fair. It seems to be everywhere.”
“So, where are we going?”
“Well, they’re three locations, apparently. There’s a lot of activity in the second location. I’m guessing they’ll be heading to the third one after, due to psychology so, to avoid all that: let’s go to the first location.”
“But, haven’t they checked that place?”
“Yes! But you never know how well they actually checked!” He jumped up from his seat, running through the hall and down the stairs. “Come along, Essie! To The Comet!” Essie runs down the steps too, being greeted by the familiar messy basement and the medium sized, strangely-shaped vehicle inside it. The metal ship had a door on one of the sides which was only accessible by walking up a metal staircase. Laszlo was standing on top of said staircase as he took a key out of his coat pocket and inserting it inside the keyhole before swiftly opening the door, allowing Essie to go inside before him.
The cream colored walls contrasted the light gray metal mechanical machines that held intense blue lights and painted spots. A bright rock shaped, blue light sat further into the room. The light changed between different shades of blue every so often. Different staircases and other areas were lined with orange rails. The whole place was brightly lit and dotted with decorations. Random levers and buttons were placed on different desks and walls, while most were on a rounded desk where Laszlo was standing. He flicks and clicks different controls until a car-like steering wheel and a chair appeared from the floor and desk. Laszlo sat on the chair and pressed the button on the centre of the steering wheel after yelling in excitement. The floor shakes bellow Essie’s feet as she held the railing closer to her, her hair falling in front of her eyes. A few moments later, the shaking came to a gentle stop and Laszlo stood up from his seated position.
“We’ve made it! We’re here!” Laszlo screamed. “Let’s go!” He quickly made it to the door, opening it in a split second. Essie stood next to him to catch a glimpse of the outside. Her attention is immediately taken by the quantity of blue colored rocks and stones around the different bright green hills. The sky is lined with clouds that were tinted with a pastel purple color. The sun shines through them and shines lightly on the reflecting river starting by a castle-like structure. The building looked pretty old with huge cracks that could be noticed even from so far away.
“So, where should we look?” The female asks, looking around at the earth-like landscape. “I mean if it’s an object it could be anywhere but, if it’s a living being, they’ll probably be inside that house, right?”
“Yes! Of course!”
“Then, where will we start? We don’t know what we’re looking for?”
“Well, we’re hoping for non-living, object so, let’s rule out the other option, shall we?” His words were so cheery and excited but his hands were stuck by his sides as his eyes remained unfocused and foggy. His expression was neutral but he fought to make a smile grow by his lips. All of this was, of course, noticed by Essie so, as they walked to the structure, she brought up his strange behavior.
“Why are you acting so strangely and cold towards this whole prophecy thing?” She question as she walked by his side. Laszlo still almost motion and expressionless beside her.
“What do you mean?” He began, acting like nothing was wrong, that fake smile by his mouth again. “I’m fine!”
“You’re not. You never act like this.” This time he didn’t answer, his lips sinking into a frown. Essie continued speaking. “I’m not asking to bother you. Nor am I doing it to prove myself correct or embarrass you. I’m asking because I’m truly worried. You’re never like this and seeing you acting so differently scares me since, I don’t know how I should act. Who knows how you’ll respond to different actions while you’re like this. I can’t read your mind, so, the least I can do is ask.”
His silence didn’t last long after that, his voice cracking slightly as he spoke again. “You’re right. Of course, you’re right. I’m sorry,” a hesitant chuckle left from his throat as his walk came to a stop “it’s just, I’m not extremely comfortable with this, I guess. Of course I had noticed the ‘someone’ possibility, I just, I-I… I wasn’t comfortable with the idea, I guess. I didn’t want to think of the possibility of someone being trapped because of an ability they got that they didn’t even want. So, I didn’t want to think about it because… I don’t know. The thought scares me.”
“It scares you?” She wondered, whispering mostly to herself. “What?” Laszlo questioned back, his eyebrows rising. “What’s confusing about this?”
Her lips joined in a straight line while her eyes looked at him with focus. “I just, I thought nothing scared you.”
“Oh…” he hesitated for a moment “then, there’s where you’re wrong: I’m scared of many things.” His hazel eyed stare lingered for only a moment. Laszlo struggled to create a new sentence as he coughed unnaturally. “Let’s just go.” He resumed his walking towards the architectural structure in the distance. The rest of the walk was shared in mostly silence as the cracks on the wall got clearer and clearer as they got closer to the slanted wooden door. Essie stood next to Laszlo as he pushed opened the door, being extremely careful since he was trying to make the smallest amount of noise possible.
The old wallpaper inside the house was cracking and coming off the wooden walls and the space between the wooden planks forming the walls made it able for light to reach the inside. The floor was covered in small rocks and pebbles that were covered in the thick dirt that formed with long years of abandonment. Dust swam through the small area, accumulating in certain small spots of the room. The two friends walked slowly, carefully placing their boots on the messy ground with every step.
“It looks abandoned.” Essie observed while running her hand on the dusty walls. “I don’t think there’s anything here.” The multi colored haired male hummed in response and thought, his neat eyebrows rising.
“I’d agree,” he began, his eyes focusing on one spot in the gloomy room “if it wasn’t for that bed sheet.” He pointed towards one of corners, where a white sheet was hanging from the wall, covering some of the wall. The fabric was still a little dirty but it couldn’t compare to the amount of dirt and dust elsewhere. “It’s way cleaner than the rest of the place meaning that it’s been here for less; someone placed it there.”
He slowly walked towards the loosely hung fabric, lifting it up partially to find a hole in the wall. He finished lifting the sheet, completely revealing the tunnel-like space. “I think my fears are coming true.” The male whispered into the air before feeling his friend’s comforting hand on his shoulder.
“Are you alright? Are you ready?” She whispered while she moved her hand to give him a slight squeeze by his side.
“Yes, yes, I’m ready.” They both ducked down towards the hole, carefully squeezing through. Dust filled their vision, mixing with the strangely longer tunnel’s darkness. Laszlo was in front of Essie so, he reached the end first. He stood up slowly, his mouth slightly opened and his hazel eyes wide as a strange surprised feeling flooding him.
A bright room was where the pair now stood. The walls were still wooden but way cleaner than the room where they were before. A small mattress laid on the floor with a pale blue blanket and white pillow but, that wasn’t what surprised the adventurers. A small figure sat upon the mattress, fiddling with their hands. Long, messy, light brown hair flowed down the individual’s back. A torn apart, white and loose dress covered their body comfortably. Their hands and face were covered in a thin layer of dirt.
The figure turned as the sound of steps scared them. Laszlo stared intensely as the person turned and was met with bright blue and green eyes. The two just stared at each other for a while. The figure was in fact a young girl; no older than six years old. Her skin was pale due to her presumably poor condition but, it seemed to have a natural neutral tan color. Her figure was unhealthily skinny and beneath her bright ocean-like eyes were dark spots creating curves.
Laszlo looked at the girl like he was almost reading her mind. He had expression that seemed like he knew everything, without either of them speaking a word. Even if this case was impossible, he too felt like her eyes were telling him everything with just a look. Meanwhile, she looked at the male with a feeling that could only be described as curiosity; but it wasn’t that either. She hadn’t seen anyone since she had appeared near that tiny wooden house and his strangely colored hair and mixed hazel eyes had caught her attention for the first time. She had found something she didn’t understand and she wanted to learn.
“Hello,” his words were soft, barely above a whisper. He lifted his hand slightly giving the child a gentle wave. Her eyebrows raised a bit before she tried to mimic the new expression with a childish wonder that the two friends couldn’t help but sadly smile at. “We’re here to help you, alright?”
He offered his hand to her, careful as to not make any moves that could potentially scare the young one. She looked at his palm for a while as if unsure of what to do before finally placing her hand on top of his. A gentle smile rose upon her lips as her hand felt his warm fingers. Her visible hand veins began glowing a gentle mint-like color that faded to a sweet baby blue. At the sight of this, Laszlo couldn’t help the sharp inhale he took. Luckily, the girl didn’t seem to notice this, instead, she slowly rose to her feet, walking towards the male slowly. She stopped once she was standing next to him, by his side. The boy let his arm circle her into a strange hug, he kept his body loose so she could pull away at any point but this just ended with her coming closer.
“Do you have a name?” He asked, trying to hide a soft smile that threatened to grow. The smaller individual shook her head as to say ‘no’ and just like that his smile was gone. “I see… Well, we should head back. Can’t risk anyone finding us.”
After a quick rush towards The Comet, the young girl laid on one of the comfier seats of the ship as the two friends got ready to head back. Laszlo found himself distracted by the nameless girl. His muscles lost their tension as his hazels landed on her once again. His hands trembled a small bit while a sticky sweat covered them slightly, his eyebrows sinking down towards his smiling eyes. He shook his head for a moment,
“You know you’ve grown attached to her.” Essie giggled, a smile graced her features as she took note of his softer eyes and tiny grin.
“No I haven’t,” he moved his head as if to remove his thoughts “I just… feel bad.”
“Yes, that too,” she agreed “but, even if you’re too proud to admit it, you have a connection with her.”
“I met her ten minutes ago. We can’t have ‘connection.’” He argued with his usual finger quotations, rolling his eyes too. But deep within his mind he knew she had a point. And that mere thought, terrified him.
