people dont talk enough about how heartbreaking the marlon betrayal mustve been for clem too,,
this dude saves the life of her and her kid. takes them in has them patched up gives them their first hot meal in who knows how long. gives them a safe place to stay. possibly permanently. confides in her that hes trying to be a good leader but feels like and fears that hes failing. asks her to help him take care of the rest of the group. helps her get over her fear of dogs by asking her to trust him. and things go well. she feels safe. like this place could really finally be the home shes been looking for
but as soon as she finds out what happened to the twins. that marlon planned on giving up her and aj too. she immediately becomes a liability to him and he attempts to kill her for it. locks her in the basement to die by walker. then tries to turn the group against her so he can shoot her instead when the first method fails. and he nearly succeeds
then a majority of the group turn against clem the minute aj kills marlon. ignoring marlons mistakes but condemning aj for his. like clem wasnt betrayed by marlon in the exact same way he betrayed the twins. like she literally wasnt almost killed twice? and how long had he been considering giving her up? was it always some contingency he planned? did he truly want to keep them around and things only changed when he feared the raiders had returned? she'll never know
#i think about this a lot... the betrayal... clems deep trust issues... then they all want to kick her out (except vi aasim and tenn 💕)#when she was just as impacted if not more so than the rest of them. since she was the only one with her Life on the line#thats why violet fighting so hard for them to stay is so important imo and would MEAN SO MUCH to clem too#vi and aasim are the only ones who can see past the bullshit and realize that theyre safer with clem around#while the rest would rather kick her out so they dont have to acknowledge their confused feelings about marlon#like first marlon betrays her then the rest of the group tell her to get fucked and die. dont come back. we never want to see you again#but she does. and she saves them#personally i do think marlon had 'good' intentions but he was a scared and fucked up kid who made bad decisions#and continued to make bad decisions to cover for his previous fuck ups#but that just makes him interesting :)#and i like teaching aj the difference between people like marlon and people like lilly#all of clems 'wow i feel so safe here :) and these guys seem smart :)' personal dialogue around ericsons makes me 😭#she was so happy to be at ericsons. and they turn against her so fast when she was more of a victim than any of them#aj is a literal baby. do not treat him like an adult who can make fully rationalized decisions. hes a baby and he only knows survival#at least they slowly get over it after clem comes back (some take longer than others...)#but the lack of compassion in voting to kick them out is heartbreaking. she was heartbroken#and thats not acknowledged as much as it should be#posting this old drafted post now cuz it expands my feelings on clems broken heartedness about the marlon situation#it speaks#twdg

i was actually really hoping i'd get this prompt sent in so thank you!! reader was staying with clem when the apocalypse started, so they have similar stories and experienced some of the same things. i made this set after the end of season 4!
prompt: "well, since we were kids i planned to marry you someday." (i changed the wording to fit how i set this up better but it's still the same concept)

remember? — clementine
"you're staring."
the sound of clementine's voice brought you out of your thoughts, and your eyes met hers. you shrugged. "sorry. zoned out." you admitted, letting out a breath.
the two of you sat on the front steps of the admin building, clem's gaze shifting from you over to aj, who'd been talking eagerly to louis about something. you smiled as you looked at him. he was such a good kid. the world forced him to grow too fast, but you both knew he was safer here than he ever was out on the road. here, he had more than you and clem.
he had louis, who he really started looking up to after everything with the delta. he was funny, kind, and always willing to talk to him if either of you weren't around. he had violet, who taught him some other important lessons. he had aasim, who taught him how to hunt with his bow. everyone at ericson's had started to love aj, just as much as you and clem did.
"what are you thinking about?" clem said, her eyes returning to your form. you're sitting a few steps below her so you have to turn your head to look at her face. "aj." you nodded your head in his direction, a smile on your lips. louis' arm was wrapped around his shoulder and they were both laughing. your heart warmed up at the sight. he deserved this.
"he looks happy, doesn't he?" she looked between him and you, a grin on her face. "he does. guess all of our hard work paid off." you couldn't help but chuckle as you look back at her.
your gaze met hers, and your eyes soften. she'd been through so much. if only you were there. you look down at her leg— her stump— and frown. you could've saved it. you shake the thought out of your head. you couldn't. aasim ushered you into the cart and he talked you down from an anxiety attack on the way back to the school. he insisted he didn't want to lose anyone else.
while you were glad he was concerned about your safety, your thoughts were on clem that entire time. how much danger she, and aj were in. your heart only eased when you saw the two of them return, and a part of her leg amputated.
"it did." she rests her hand on your shoulder. "come here." she muttered, patting next to her. she moved her crutches to her other side so they're out of your way, and you just nod. you pulled yourself up those few stairs and sit next to her.
"remember when we were kids? how we'd.. play house together?" she said, looking out across the courtyard. her eyes, once again, fall on louis and aj. "how we would pretend we were parents raising a kid together?" she smiled at the thought, her eyes falling closed. "why are you bringing that up now?" you asked, an eyebrow raised.
"it all feels so real now. me and you, we raised aj. we turned him into a kind and loving boy, even in a world like this. we did it, y/n." she said, her arm wrapping around your shoulders in a side hug. you noticed the look of pain on her face as her leg moved but you decide against asking her about it.
"i guess it does."
the two of you fell silent for a moment. if you closed your eyes tight enough, it felt like you were back in clem's treehouse in georgia. the birds chirping, the cool breeze and the warm sun. her presence right next to you.
she was so beautiful.
she was the only person keeping you together for a long time. after kenny died, you were a wreck for a long time. you couldn't help but feel like you could've done more for him. at the very least, could've saved him from a lifetime as a walker. but that's what he was. without the use of his legs, you knew he wouldn't have lasted for long even if you'd managed to have gotten him out of that mess.
kenny and lee, they both sacrificed themselves for you and clem. and in a way, for aj. kenny loved aj with every bone in his body, his eyes filled with so much care whenever he looked at him. you knew he would've been so proud of him and where he was now.
and lee. lee would've loved aj. it pained you to think about what could've been. if he hadn't been bit.
"since we were kids, i planned on marrying you someday."
your eyes opened, and you looked right at clem. her face is flushed and her gaze was fixated on the main gate straight ahead. "what?" you asked after a moment, your expression showing your confusion as you bite at the inside of your lip.
"when we played those games together as kids, i wanted it to be real so badly. i wanted me and you to be together forever." she admitted, a sigh escaping from her lips. "and then this happened. i never forgot about it." she continued, her eyes finally meeting yours after her confession.
what did she even mean? did she have feelings for you? real, meaningful feelings, or was she just talking about how she felt as a kid? you searched her eyes for anything to give you an answer, and you just shook your head. "i don't get what you're saying." you told her, moving a few inches away so you could get a better look at her face.
"i like you. i have for a long time." she muttered, taking her bottom lip between her teeth. you hadn't ever seen her this nervous before. "and you're not.. you're not joking? you're not just telling me this for fun?" you asked, wanting her to go more in depth about whatever she meant.
even though you knew what she meant. she liked you, and you couldn't fathom it.
sure, you pictured the thought of you two as a couple a few times before. you imagined her hand in yours and her arms wrapped around you in a loving embrace. though you never considered her having feelings for you, too.
she shook her head.
"i like you too.. clem. really, i do." you told her, taking her hand in yours. it was clammy, but you didn't even focus on that. all you could think about was her. your future with her.
"yeah?"
you nodded.
".. good."
she smiled, her hand squeezing yours.

A Bond Stronger Than Blood
Summary: Prisha and Violet decide to go stone diving with Allison and ask her an important question.
Word Count: 3639
Read on AO3:
Prisha shifted around lightly in her sleep, her arm protectively wrapped around her love as they cuddled in the hammock. Her eyes glanced down and looked at Violet who was fast asleep, her head nuzzled into the crook on Prisha’s neck. Gently she leaned forward and placed a kiss on Violet’s forehead which made her stir slightly. After a moment Violet’s eyes fluttered open. The blonde pirate slowly blinked the sleep out of them.
“Good morning,” Prisha smiled warmly.
“Mmmm, no, it's not morning yet,” Violet wrapped her arms tighter around Prisha and hid her face once more. The gesture made Prisha laugh as she gave her love another kiss.
“Alright, we can stay in the hammock for a little longer,”
But it seemed like fate had another idea for as soon as the couple had started to fall asleep again a huge wave crashed against Ol’ Kickass. The wave made the ship sway harshly to the side and Prisha and Violet were tossed from their hammock. The two pirates tumbled and rolled on the floor for a minute before they stopped. Violet shook her head and she realized that she was hovering above Prisha. Her face grew red and she quickly scrambled to her feet.
“Shit, sorry,” The blonde pirate held out her hand which Prisha accepted with a smile.
“It's quite alright, Violet.” Prisha kissed Violet’s wrist which made her love blush even more. “Well, now that we’re up shall we go and start the morning chores?”
“Okay,” Violet intertwined her fingers with Prisha’s and the two began to make their way to the upper decks. When they reached the upper decks they saw that many of the Ericson pirates had already started their chores, although that large wave had caused a bit of a mess.
Mitch sat on the  deck with a bucket of potato peels in his hair. Brody kept laughing as she helped her husband try to clean up. Mitch grumbled here and there but soon laughed as well before blushing fiercely when Brody kissed his cheek. Mitch smiled playfully and asked for another kiss but instead of a kiss a potato peel landed in his mouth. The auburn pirate kept laughing then helped her love up.
Over on the starboard end of the ship Willy was currently tangled up in riggings. Garbage was running frantically this way and that. The possum bounced with the force of her hisses as she looked up at the pirate.
“Allie, could you help a little bit?” The lanky pirate smiled as his shirt fell down and covered his face. Allison began to climb the rigging with ease, her hands and feet working in unison to get her up there in no time at all. She began to free her love who was giving encouraging words that were muffled behind his shirt. Allison kept her eyes on her task, only sneaking occasional glances at Willy’s chest.
“There,” Allison freed Willy’s leg and he fell for a moment before she grasped his hand. With a wide swing he grasped the riggings and smiled at his love.
“Thanks, Allie!” Willy gave her a quick kiss that made the stoic pirate give a soft smile.
“Prisha, Violet! Glad to see you two are up!” Louis smiled as he leaned on the ship’s wheel. “As you can see, Ol’ Kickass took a bit of an ass kicking from that wave but everyone is fine. Ruby and Clem didn’t take a spill or anything which is good.”
“It was a rather large wave,” Prisha noted as her eyes scanned the light blue waters. The sea seemed calm now. She wondered what could’ve caused such a huge wave.
“Yeah, it woke us up,” Violet grumbled and crossed her arms.
“That’s a shame, but the chores today are pretty light so good news is there will be plenty of time for lazy naps,” The captain smiled over at the street rat who gave a nonchalant shrug.
“Eh, I guess,”
“Well, let's get started on the chores and then we can plan a fun afternoon together. Maybe Allison would like to go stone diving. I heard from Sophie and Marlon that there are beautiful stones beneath the water’s surface,” Prisha smiled over at her wife who seemed to be all for that idea.
“Sounds fun. I think Allison will think so too.” Violet and Prisha looked over at the pirate who saw them and gave a faint smile. The two had grown quite close with the young, stoic pirate over the time that she had been aboard the ship. So much so that both of them felt a parental bond with her. To them she felt like a daughter of sorts.
It seemed a bit crazy to think that considering the circumstances of their meeting and that they had known her for less than a year but the stoic, kind-hearted pirate lass had become family to them. To have another chance to spend an afternoon with her filled both of their hearts with quiet excitement.
Violet leaned over and gave Prisha’s cheek a quick kiss then went off to start her daily chores. Prisha watched her for a moment with a happy smile on her lips before she left to do the same. It turned out that Louis had been right and there wasn’t really that many chores to do. They weren’t near a port town so they didn’t have to resupply nor were they near a potential battle so they didn’t have to worry about any looming danger.
After Violet had finished prepping for the meals of the day with Omar and Prisha had wrapped up her time with Ruby double checking the medical supplies, they reunited. Prisha gave Violet a gentle kiss on the lips then took her hand that fit perfectly with her own. “Shall we?” The taller pirate led the way towards Allison who was busy sitting on the edge of the ship. Her right leg lazily dangled off the side while she worked to clean her fingernail with a knife.
“Allison,” Violet’s voice made the younger pirate stop her task and glance back.
“Hey,” Allison resumed her task in silence.
“Are you finished with your chores?” Prisha asked while she moved forward with Violet towards the side of the ship.
“Yeah, why?” Allison glanced over at Prisha and Violet.
“We wanted to go stone diving with you,” Violet smiled when she noticed the small, warm smile that appeared on Allison’s lips.
“Okay,” Allison tucked away her knife then hopped onto the deck, causing her basket hilted sword to clink against her hip. She began to walk off towards the rowboat when suddenly she stopped in her tracks. “Oh, almost forgot, I made you this.” She pulled out something from her pocket and tossed it over to Violet.
The blonde pirate caught it with some difficulty but soon any frustration she had at her sight’s shortcomings faded away when she saw the gift. It was a beautiful dark brown leather eyepatch. In the center of it was a skull and crossbones stitched with a slightly lighter brown than the rest of the eyepatch.
“Holy shit!” Violet stared at the eyepatch in awe before taking off her usual black plain eyepatch. Prisha moved to help but soon realized she couldn’t really do much.
“Don’t worry,” Allison reassured and moved forward to help Violet with her newest eyepatch. She stepped back and gave a faint smile. “Yeah, looks badass.”
Violet smiled at Allison’s compliment.
“I agree,” Prisha took Violet’s hand again. “So, shall we get a rowboat?”
“Yeah. Allison, you wanna lead the way?” Violet looked over at the stoic pirate who gave a short nod and began to guide them over to the rowboat. It took a few minutes to prep the rowboat and attach it to the riggings needed to safely set it down into the water. It was only once the rowboat was all set that Prisha noticed something different about it.
“Are these harpoons?” The pirate moved forward and examined a holder hidden inside the rowboat where five thin, sharp harpoons lay hidden.
“Mitch put them there.” Marlon’s friendly voice made the three girls glance over to see the blond pirate strolling forward with Rosie in tow. The pitbull trotted forward and immediately tried to win over Allison’s attention. The pirate smiled softly and began to scratch behind Rosie’s ears which made her stub tail wag ecstatically.
“Of course Mitch put these here,” Violet crossed her arms. “What, does he think we’ll fucking go whale hunting for shits and giggles?”
“Knowing him, he might actually do that with Willy,” Prisha added and placed her hand on her hip.
“Probably. Let's head out.” Allison stopped the head scratches for Rosie and vaulted over the side of the ship into the rowboat.
“Be careful,” Prisha’s eyes flickered with worry for Allison while she held Violet’s hand and helped her into the rowboat. Once her wife was safely in the boat Prisha got in and slowly worked with her love to lower the rowboat down into the calm sea. As soon as they had touched water and the ropes had been detached from the rowboat Allison began to row. She gave a small grunt of effort as the oars pushed through the blue waters. Allison listened quietly to the instructions Prisha gave and within no time they were approaching a good spot.
“I see some stones,” Prisha leaned over and glanced at the light turquoise colored stones that lay underneath the water’s surface. Allison didn’t bother to wait and jumped into the sea, making the rowboat sway this way and that.
“Wait for us, Allison,” Violet safely put away her eyepatch then hopped in as well. Within seconds Prisha had joined them.
“So, how should we go about this?” Prisha asked as she gently kicked her legs under water to keep herself afloat.
“We each take turns. During Violet’s, I’ll give instructions,” Allison spoke simply and the two older pirates seemed in agreement.
Prisha was the first to dive. She took a deep breath then dove down into the light blue water, her one arm propelling her forward along with her feet. Reaching out, Prisha grabbed three stones then pushed herself back up. The pirate gasped loudly and held up her hand victoriously. Allison paddled over with a rather large smile on her face.
“Do any of these suffice?” Prisha looked over to the pirate who gave a short nod.
“I like this one,” She picked a stone that was jagged and rough around the edges yet still shone beautifully in the sunlight. Prisha smiled then chucked the rejected pebbles back into the sea.
“Alright, guess it's my turn. Pick any stone you want and I’ll get it for you.” Violet kicked her legs casually while she waited for Allison to choose.
“Swim a little to your right. A little more - there!” Allison nodded and Violet submerged herself underwater. She couldn’t see much of anything now but if she swam down and reached out her hand she was sure she’d get some good stones for Allison. Her fingertips brushed against the smooth surface of rocks and with a little kick to boost herself forward Violet snatched up a few stones. How many she had successfully gotten she had no idea. Popping back up Violet sputtered out some water then flicked back her sopping wet hair. “So, did I do a good job or are all these shit?”
Allison studied the selection of stones carefully as her feet lazily paddled under the sea. “Oh, I like this one,” The young pirate picked a smooth stone and gently brushed her fingers against its surface. Allison could feel her smile growing. “I’m going to go over there.” She pointed a little ways south. Violet and Prisha nodded then joined her as she swam over there.
Allison’s eyes locked on the ocean floor below, searching ever so carefully for special stones. That's when she noticed a small stone that looked a bit beaten up and lumpy but was vaguely shaped like a heart. She bet Willy would love it. Without a word Allison dove down and swam quickly to the object she desired. Once it was in her grasp she stayed below the water, glancing around this way and that for any other stones that caught her eye.
That's when she noticed an anomaly among the stones. Instead of being a light turquoise this one was a dark teal. Prisha always did love that color. Propelling herself forward, Allison grabbed the stone then kicked her way up to the surface. Once she was above the waves she handed over the teal stone. “Thought you’d like this,”
Allison saw the excitement dance in Prisha’s eyes and the joy that she felt from receiving a gift from Allison. That made the young pirate’s smile grow more. Prisha mumbled something about protecting the gift and swam back to the rowboat to secure the stone before swimming back. The three continued on with this strategy for quite some time. Before they knew it, an hour and a half had flown by.
Allison led the way back to the rowboat. Her face was hurting from smiling so much. She felt excitement upon seeing the variety and quantity of stones she had gathered. It had been an amazing day. Allison hoisted herself on the rowboat first then moved to help Prisha then Violet.
“Whew, that was exhausting,” Violet lay down in the rowboat.
“But fun,” Prisha added with a smile and looked at her wife.
“Yeah, it was a lot of fun. Did you have fun, Allison?”
“Yeah, it was great,” Allison smiled softly at the pair then down at her stones.
A moment of silence passed between the trio and for some reason a question kept clawing in the back of Prisha’s mind. They had spent this wonderful day together and it had felt like a family adventure. She knew that Violet had felt the same way but it made her wonder: what did Allison view them as? Did she view them as simply friends or crewmembers or did she perhaps view them the same way they viewed her, as family? The thought that maybe just maybe Allison viewed them as her parental figures, as her mothers, filled Prisha with such hopeful joy. She glanced over at Violet and could see that she was on the same wavelength. The two shared a look, silently communicating what they should do. With a short pause, Prisha began to speak.
“Allison, I was wondering something.”
Prisha’s voice drew up the pirate’s attention and her eyes caught onto the taller pirate’s emotions in a moment. “What is it?”
“Well, you see, over these many months that you have been an Ericson pirate, Violet and I have grown close to you. Viewing you as an irreplaceable part of the crew and a treasured part of both of our lives. I think I speak for both of us when I say that we view you as if you are our own. You’re like a daughter to us,” Prisha looked back at Violet who gave a nod and smiled towards Allison.
Allison seemed surprised by the words. Her eyes were wide; a flicker of happiness and disbelief shone within them. Her face had a soft smile on it for a second before it became unreadable.
“We wanted to tell you this because we want to know how you feel about us. We don’t want to overstep and make anything weird or shit.” Violet’s eyes looked down at the rowboat.
“Although we do realize stating how we truly feel could potentially be awkward if you view us as simply crewmembers.” Prisha began to nervously play with the pouch on her hip.
Allison remained quiet for a minute. The air around the trio swirled with tense hopefulness and fear. After a few minutes Allison spoke up but it was not what they expected to hear.
“There! Over by the west section of that island - is that a fucking giant squid?” Allison pointed over and the two other pirates followed her finger.
After a few seconds the water rumbled once more and a giant squid poked its body out for a moment before diving back down. The action caused a large wave to form.
“Could it be? Is that creature the cause of the giant wave from earlier?” Prisha stared in awe and disbelief at the sea creature. It was enormous.
“If that's true, then we should take it down,” Violet cracked her knuckles. “If it keeps stirring shit like that it could hurt Ruby or Clem and their babies.”
“We have the harpoons and the rope. We could sneak up on it and harpoon it,” Allison suggested while double checking her weapons.
“True. We tire it out and then we strike. With the three of us I’m sure we could make quick work of it,” Prisha thought deeply about the plan while her eyes scanned the waters for signs of the beast.
“It could also bring us in some coin,” Violet added as she placed her eyepatch back on.
“Or food,” Allison offered as she grabbed the oars and got in position to begin to row.
“Both good additions to a victorious outcome,” Prisha worked to prepare the harpoons with Violet while Allison quietly rowed forward. The only sound shared between the trio was that of their breathing and the oars moving through the water. It took a while to reach the spot in such a way as to not disturb the giant squid. Allison moved with quiet precision while Violet held the first harpoon with a firm grip.
“I'll give the signal. As soon as Violet is successful in throwing the spear, you must tie it to the rowboat,” Prisha’s gaze turned to Allison who gave a quick nod. With a plan set, Prisha’s eyes watched the seas carefully. The waves were calm and the world around them quiet.
Suddenly the giant squid emerged from the water’s surface for a second.
“Violet, throw the harpoon now!”
Violet listened to her love’s instructions and with a mighty throw she impaled the squid with the harpoon. Allison grabbed the end of the rope and using the rope tying skills she had picked up on her years on the Seven Seas she secured it to the rowboat.
The squid writhed in pain and wiggled around before diving underwater and swimming off. The rowboat jerked forward with the sudden pull of the rope and soon the pirates were holding on for dear life while the sea creature swam around. After several minutes of struggle it settled down and Allison picked another harpoon. She waited ever so patiently for the perfect window of attack. After a few minutes she spotted it and with a nod of confirmation from Prisha the pirate launched the harpoon, hitting the squid in the gut and causing bubbly blood to dribble out of the wound. The sea creature gave a cry and tried to flee once more. This process continued for nearly an hour until all the harpoons had been used. The squid looked deflated. Its blood mixed with the mucus-like substance of its skin.
“It seems to have tired out,” Prisha slowly drew out her cutlass. Her action made Allison follow suit and take out her basket hilted sword as well. Violet spun around her dagger and the trio shared a look.
Allison led the charge and hopped off the rowboat, launching herself in the air before her blade embedded itself in the squid upon landing. She slid down the beast as it gave a cry. Its tentacles splashed around in the water and tried to whack Allison off its back. But before it could Prisha had joined into the fight  and used her cutlass to clutch onto the sea beast. Allison began to hack and slash at the giant squid while Prisha used one giant swipe to tear open its gut. Violet soon joined in the action, sprinting forward and leaping onto the squid’s face. Taking her dagger she sent a flurry of attacks, causing blood and squid bits to coat her clothes. The squid’s beak tried to tear at her skin.
“Not a chance!” Prisha dug her sword in deeper to distract the squid. Allison knew that would only be a temporary solution though and unsheathed her knife, using it to stop her from falling as she swung over to help Violet. Within seconds Allison was beside Violet right as the squid was about to pierce her skin.
“Back off,” Allison growled and sliced off the beast’s beak. With that opening made the duo jabbed a few more wounds into the sea creature.
The giant squid stopped struggling. It twitched a few times as blood and guts stained the ocean before it became a lifeless husk of what it once was. The three pirates worked together to haul it over to the island before they all collapsed from exhaustion. They could row back to the ship and get help for towing their catch to Ol’ Kickass in a bit. Prisha and Violet focused on catching their breath alongside Allison when all of the sudden the young pirate spoke up.
“Moms,”
“What?” Violet looked over with wide eyes, unsure whether she’d heard Allison right.
“You two,” Allison took a shaky breath and flicked off some squid from her clothes. “Are my family. That's what I think of you.” She stared at the sky, her heart growing warm at the thought that she had found a family. She never thought she’d get something like that ever again. Prisha and Violet shared a smile. Allison thought of them as family. It was really true. In that moment all three pirates’ hearts were shining brightly with joy. The joy of family.

Walking Dead Game FanFiction - “The Love Plot”
Title: The Love Plot Characters: Clementine, AJ, Tenn, Louis, James Summary: After AJ asks Clementine to explain what “love is love” is, Clementine accidentally confesses her feelings for Violet and AJ, Tenn, and Louis make a plan to get the two together. Author's Note: Happy Pride!! Sorry this fic is so late in the month. Life has not been kind to me :( Requested By: thewalkingdxnniii support me with ko-fi ♡ ---------♥️♥️♥️----------
“Can boys love boys?” AJ asked.
Clementine blinked, confused as to where such a question came from. Turning, she spotted him peering out the window, cheek in his hand. Approaching, she smiled.
James was standing with one of Ericson’s new members — a boy from a nearby caravan — beaming at him when he spoke. AJ studied them internally, humming.
Clementine smiled. “Yes AJ, of course they can. Everyone can love whoever they want to.”
AJ backed away. “So, girls can love girls too?”
“Of course,” Clem said with a smile. “That’s all perfectly normal.”
“Like you and Violet?” AJ said with an innocent shrug.
“Yes AJ that’s—” Clem froze, her voice catching in her throat. Oh no. Oh no.
AJ blinked, confused about her mortified reaction. To him, it felt obvious. The way Clem looked at Violet, spoke to her, bumped and brushed against her arms when they talked; he felt as if their connection was clear as day. It was the exact same way James interacted with the boy.
Strangely, AJ’s innocence made Clem feel even more embarrassed. “U-Uh,” she began, her voice catching.
AJ shrugged. “Didn’t you say it was normal? That everyone can love whoever they want?”
Clementine gulped. Crap. He was getting better and better at that: taking her advice and using it against her. So, she just sighed. “You’re right. It is.”
“So, why are you so nervous?” He asked, brow raised.
Clementine gulped again. “Because AJ,” she sighed, fidgeting with her fingers and sitting on the edge of her bed. “Violet doesn’t know.”
AJ smirked. “It’s a secret?”
Clementine felt mortified, her cheeks a pool of red. “Yes.”
AJ smirked wider and nodded. “Understood,”
Immediately after dinner that night, the moment they could get away, AJ tugged Tenn around to the back of Ericson, hushing for him to stay quiet. The moment they were out of prying eyes, and the moment after AJ checked for eavesdroppers, he grinned. “I need help.”
Tenn raised a brow but said nothing.
“It’s about Clem,” AJ said, watching at how Tenn’s confusion fell. Immediately, he became earnest. “I want to do something nice for her but I need help to do it.”
“Okay,” Tenn said, voice fluttering nervously. “What is it?”
AJ smirked, yet again glancing from side to side, this time dipping his head in to speak. “She likes Violet.” He hushed. Pulling away, he watched Tenn’s eyes pop open. AJ eagerly nodded, grinning ear to ear. “I need help to make her happy.”
Tenn blinked, the shocked swelling of his gaze calming. “You want to get them together?”
“It’s worth a shot!” AJ said beaming, excited at the prospect. “Why don’t we try? What’s the worst that can happen?”
“It ends awkwardly for both of them,” a voice said from above, causing the boys to jump. “But, if you have me on your side, that won’t happen.”
Glancing up, the two boys jumped even more seeing Louis peeking his head out of one of the upper windows. He was smirking, his cheek resting in his palm, eyebrows raised and eager. “So? Are we doing this?”
AJ instantly began beaming, nodding and waving for him to come down and join them. As hesitant as Tenn seemed, he too was excited for their plan unfolded. He only wanted whatever it was they were doing to work. He just wanted his people to be happy.
In specific though, he wanted Violet to be happy. She’d gone through so much struggle in relationships that he feared she’d closed herself off from ever having one again. The last thing he wanted was for their efforts to result in further harm for them both.
Louis weaseled his way out of his window and attempted to scale the wall to the grass. Instead, he missed a brick and fumbled to the floor. For some reason, he thought scaling the side of the building would be more subtle than walking out the front door. “I didn’t want to draw attention,” he said. Tenn and AJ only smirked.
“We need to find a way to get them to tell each other.” AJ said, bottom lip puffed out in thought.
“How? You said yourself Clem was embarrassed,” Tenn said, arms crossed, hugging his sketchbook close.
Louis smirked, placing his hands on his hips. “If Clem knew that Violet felt the same way, she wouldn’t be embarrassed.”
AJ’s eyes popped, lips parting. “Wait, Violet likes her too?”
Louis jaw opened, paired with how Tenn’s did. Louis then bit on his inner cheek, gulped, and adjusted himself to stand more upright. “I guess that was a secret too.”
Then, it felt as if their plan was obvious. They just needed to get them to confess to each other.
As they dispersed half an hour later, their plan was ready to be set in motion. All they needed to do was get each of them to confess their feelings within earshot of the other. Then, hopefully, the rest would work itself out.
The next morning, the moment AJ opened his eyes he smiled. Today was the day everything unfolded.
AJ’s excitement was palpable and Clementine could tell, even though she didn’t know why. Really, AJ was just excited that after so many years of Clementine guiding and helping him, he could finally do something for her in return. Something special.
The first day of their plan was up to him, and he knew it. Timing was everything, and he refused to mess it up.
First things first, AJ watched and waited for Louis and approach Violet after breakfast. That was the time when Clem sat behind the school to go over their inventory and plan what chores needed to be done that day. Louis initiating discussion with Violet was AJ’s cue to grab Clem and bring her forward.
“So Vi,” Louis said, trotting up beside her. She was busy cleaning out the ash in the fire pit — finding the left over pieces of wood they could use for their fire that night. It was a type of inventory to see how many fresh logs they needed.
Violet smirked, her head in the pit as she spoke. “Yes Louis?”
“I have a question.”
That was AJ’s cue.
Abandoning his spot at their picnic table, AJ launched himself toward the back of the school, darting as fast as his little legs could carry him. “Clem! Clem!” He called, drawing closer.
Clem glanced up, eyes widened and startled from the sudden rush of sounds. Her initial panic vanished seeing AJ’s beaming face. “AJ, you scared me.”
“You need to come see,”
“Come see what?” She asked, raising a brow. “AJ, I’m planning for the day.”
“It’ll only take a second,” he said, equally eager as before. Then, seeing her irritation unflinching, he broke out his puppy dog eyes. “I thought you’d really like to see it.”
After a moment of contemplation — one that showed on her face — she sighed and stood. “Okay, let’s go quick.”
AJ’s sad expression snapped to a grin. “Follow me!” He called, starting for the front of the school. When he got there, he waited for Clementine to calmly approach before speaking. “Hm.” He said, analyzing the grass. “Give me just a second to find it.”
Clementine sighed through her nose, her gaze lifted and ready to drift. She stopped to snap her attention elsewhere, however, when she heard her name.
“What about Clem?” Louis’ voice emerged. Turning, Clementine spotted him as Violet by the fire pit.
Violet lifted her head out of the pit faintly, staring up at him, eyes harrowing. “Do we need to talk about this now?”
“Yes!” He said. “I want to play Truth or Dare tonight and want to know what I should ask.”
Violet hesitated, then sighed and returned to the pit. “Don’t ask Clem to kiss me.”
“Why!” Louis scoffed.
Clementine immediately felt her heart slam into her stomach, her hands bursting into little shakes.
“I can’t find it,” AJ said with a huff.
“That’s okay AJ,” Clem breathed softly, not wanting to generate too much noise. “Take your time.” Secretly, AJ smirked.
“Because she might not want to kiss me.” Violet said plainly. “Just because I want to doesn’t mean we should force her to.”
Clementine’s eyes popped, her chest soared, her heart bumping and fumbling in every direction. AJ, with his head down, smiled in glee.
“You don’t know that,” Louis said.
“I still don’t want to force her,” she responded. “That’s not how I want that to happen.”
Clem felt as if her heart was never going to stop beating; as if it was going to run on forever. It quickened as Violet stood to leave, rolling her eyes at Louis one final time before heading to the other end of the yard.
AJ sighed, shoulders sagging. Turning, his faked dreary gaze rested on hers. “I’m sorry. It was a ladybug. I’ll just bring it you if I find another one.”
Clementine nodded, eyes focused on him but distant — as if her focus was actually elsewhere. It was exactly what AJ had hoped for. “Yeah,” she said softly. “Sounds good.”
Then, as she turned her back, AJ flashed a thumbs up in Louis’ direction. The two beamed.
Next was phase 2: Clementine’s confession and Violet’s discovery.
After dinner had come and gone, Clementine had been jittery and smiling all day. There wasn’t a moment she was caught looking dull, and AJ loved it. He hadn’t seen her that happy in forever.
Now, hopefully the second half of their plan could make her even happier.
AJ and Clementine, like they always did in the evenings, sat on the front step of Ericson. Their bonfire had long since ended and, much to Violet’s relief and confusion, Louis hadn’t started up a game of Truth or Dare.
It would all make sense in a matter of minutes.
“Hey Clem?” AJ asked.
“Yeah AJ?” Their voices were soft and gentle, not wanting to disrupt the peace of the quiet night air.
“You looked so happy today.”
Clementine smiled and released a chuckle. AJ was thankful, because her laughter meant that Louis propping the door open behind them couldn’t be detected. “I was happy, AJ.”
“Why?”
Clementine smiled wider and AJ couldn’t help but smile too. He was blowing his cover — he was showing her that he knew why — but he didn’t care. He was too joyous seeing how happy she was. “Because of Violet.”
AJ smirked. “What about her?” Clementine turned to him, smirking knowingly. AJ couldn’t help but burst into a fit of giggles. “Okay, okay, I know why.”
“Yeah you do,” she teased, gently jabbing his shoulder. She sighed, her joy fluttering into the air with it. “I just can’t believe it. This is the happiest I’ve felt in a long, long time.”
AJ smiled. He didn’t say a thing.
“It’s a dream come true. It feels like,” she hesitated, her breath wavering. “It feels like I finally have something I can look forward to again. Someone to admire and strive for.” Her eyes sagged, reminiscing. “I’ve really missed that.”
AJ hesitated. “But I thought you liked her for a while?”
“Oh I have,” Clem said with another chuckle. “Since the moment I first saw her, but it didn’t feel real until I realized she liked me back. Now it feels,” she paused, searching for the right word. “Now it feels possible.”
“Like,” AJ began, leaning in. “You and her? Together?”
Clementine laughed. She couldn’t help it, joy was pouring out of every piece of her. “I’d hope so.”
There was a sharp intake of breath behind them, and then: “Clem?”
Clementine froze, her eyes widening and her heart dropping. Not wasting a moment, she stood and flipped around. There, much to her shock, stood Violet. Just past her shoulder was Louis holding the door open, desperately trying — and failing — to hide his smirk.
Clementine’s jaw flopped open anxiously as she fumbled with the words she wanted to say; that she needed to say. “Violet,” she breathed, hardly able to get even that out.
Slowly, sneakily, AJ slipped away from the steps and trotted to the side of the school to sit with Tenn. There, all of them could secretly watch what unfolded; seeing their plan come to fruition.
Once they vanished, Clementine relaxed, the flare in her cheeks refusing to subside. It had been pink the entire while she’d been talking about Violet, but burst into bright, flaming red once she’d been found out. “Hi,” she said softly, feeling the smile tug at her lips.
Feeling her own smile burn in her cheeks, Violet smiled back. The joy that bubbled in her chest was like nothing else. “Hey,”
Off to the side, AJ, Louis and Tenn beamed. They knew what was coming next.
Their plan worked. Violet and Clementine were together, and communicating, and happy, and it was all any of them could’ve hoped for. ---------♥️♥️♥️----------

Dating Mitch (Female!Reader)
Tumblr media
A/N: This is actually really long, but I go hard for Mitch because he is my MAN. I’m so sad telltale killed him off, he had so much potential as a character. If they kill Aasim, AJ, Clem, Louis, or Violet, I might just riot.
You first met Mitch when he was with Ruby and Clementine at the Greenhouse.
You were also a kid that was taken to the Delta to fight their war, but you were quick to see through their scheme and you never fell into their bribery of warm clothes and hot showers. As soon as they assigned you on your first mission, you abandoned your group in a cluster of walkers and ran like hell into the forest, meeting the three kids your age burying a body.
Ruby and Clementine had to make Mitch shut his mouth when they were bringing you back to the boarding school. He didn’t like bringing in another stranger, especially after what happened to Marlon. You decided to not ask about who that was or what happened to him. You were just happy to finally be out of that place.
Everyone welcomed you in, especially after they were sure you weren’t a threat. You were unarmed, and just a little bit taller than Willy was. And you were all smiled despite not having any food in your system what’s so ever.
You became close to Willy, Tenn. and AJ immediately, they reminded you of your younger brother who died in the very beginning. Not only that, you’d always were good with kids even before the end of the world. Willy had told you Mitch would warm up to you eventually.
After dinner, everyone piled around Louis, the tall boy with a sweet coat and a deck of cards. You figured you’d join them and see what the commotion was about.
It turned out to be a game of truth or dare and after Aasim had to kiss a walker head, you chickened out and picked truth.
“Where were you from before you came here? Surely you weren’t all alone running through the woods.” He asked.
You told the group you were actually on your own for a while after your older sister died and that a group of people had taken you off of the side of the road one day and told you to fight for them or die. Everyone got silent before the little boy with a large face scar asked if there was a girl named Minnie or Sophie where you were from.
You asked how he knew Minnie and he looked down at his hands and they fiddled together. Violet began to tell you the story of how you were a victim of a group who took children to force them into becoming soldiers, and that they lost people of their own because of the Delta. All of a sudden, everyone began asking several questions at once, about Minnie, Sophie, and a woman named Christa.
“Guys, back up. Let Y/N breathe a bit.” Mitch piped up out of nowhere, and everyone apologized and sat back down.
“I’m sorry, I don’t know much about Minnie and I’ve never met a Sophie or Christa. I ran away as soon as I could, so I didn’t have time to met anyone else besides Lilly.” Just saying her name made your blood boil. She was the real monster behind it all. Clementine told you later on while you both were on watch that she and Lilly had history and that the Delta was planning an attack on the school, which was the whole reason behind their being at the greenhouse.
Two weeks later, they arrived at the gates. Cages connected to horses, a sight you found familiar to see that left a nasty taste in your mouth. When Lily stepped out and began speaking of Minerva, you watched as Tenn blew his cover. Mitch and Willy were right next to you, annoyed but sympathetic at the naive little boy.
“Let me take you to them,-” “Shut the fuck up Lily!” You said, drawing your gun and aiming it at her head. “You’re not taking anyone else, not again!”
Mitch ran to attack Lily later on, and you noticed she had her knife drawn. You got in between her and Mitch and felt the blade pierce your skin. “Fuck, no. Not you too!” Mitch cried, but another member of the Delta came up from behind him and you lost your line of vision as you blacked out.
You woke up in a cell, one you’ve seen before. With Louis/Violet (depending on who Clem saved)
You made sure Violet knew Clem didn’t have time to save both of you, and you convinced her that Clem is dying knowing she let them take her. Violet felt better after being reassured by you.
When Louis kept yelling at Lily, you knew he was going to get punished. And you’d be damned if you were going to let that happen. Minerva unlocked your cell and put a gun to your head as Lily made way to Louis, a towel and knife in hand. “Maybe this will finally shut you up?”
Before Lily could lay a finger on Louis, you jumped on her back and clawed at her neck. Minnie shot your leg and Lily pushed you off, touching her neck to feel the blood from your nails. She stomped you out until you could barely move before she left. All you cared about was Louis not getting his punishment.
When Clem and the rest of Ericson came through, the first person you heard was Mitch calling your name. Louis jumped up and ran to the cell door, telling him where you were. After the door got broken open, Mitch ran to you and took you into his lap.
“What the hell did they do to you?” He asked, feeling over your cheeks. “I’m fine. They were gonna cut out his tongue. They’ve done it before.” You thought your ribs were broken since it was getting more difficult to breathe and talk. Not to mention, your stab wound has reopened and you were losing blood fast.
Mitch took off his coat and draped it over your shoulders, which helped with the bleeding once you pressed the material closer to your body. He lifted you up and took you out of the boat along with everyone else. You all waited for Clementine to return.
You weren’t sure when you fell asleep, but you woke up in a bed back at Ericsons. Mitch was on the ground next to you, ringing out a towel in a bowl of red water.
“Mitch?” “Oh, thank god. You gave me a scare back there.”
He was taking care of you since Ruby was taking care of everyone else that got injured on the mission.
He blamed himself for you getting hurt and taken. If he hadn’t run up to Lily or fought off that soldier sooner, he could have done something to help you. He began to ramble about how sorry he was until you sat yourself up and grabbed his hand.
“I stood in between you and her because I didn’t want to see another person I cared about die. I chose to go in your place because I didn’t want it to happen to you, Mitch. I’ve seen it all once already and I didn’t want you to go through it like I did.” You spoke in the softest tone Mitch has ever heard, not even his mother spoke to him with such kindness when he was a child.
Without even realizing, Mitch leaned in and pressed his lips against yours. When he noticed what he was doing he was about to pull away, but you put your hand on the back of his head to keep him close.
His body pressed up against yours and by accident, he put a bit of pressure on your wounds and made you wince in pain.
He sits up quickly and backs away a bit, flustered and ashamed at the same time. You giggle and tell him it was alright and that he can come back, which he does. You two end up sitting next to each other for the rest of the day, just chatting about things you’ve never gotten to before.
Mitch would also leave you on bed rest until Ruby cleared you to walk, and even then he’d stand by you just in case you lost your balance.
While on bedrest, Mitch would fetch you everything you could have possibly needed. Felt hungry? He’d grab you a bowl of whatever Omar was whipping up. Got thirsty? Mitch would go all the way to the stream to get you a glass of fresh water. His eagerness to help you made it clear to everyone in the camp that Mitch had a soft spot for the newcomer.
Even when you were completely healed, Mitch would volunteer to go with you on runs. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Louis or Aasim to bring you back safe, he just felt better if he was there just in case something went wrong.
One night you had a nightmare and couldn’t go back to sleep. You laid in your room, staring at the ceiling with shaky breaths. Every time you heard a noise you jumped, thinking it was going to be the last thing you heard before a walker or bullet got to you. You stood up, not being able to take it anymore, and walked out of the room. You thought if you looked outside you would see there was nothing to worry about and that you would feel better. What you didn’t know was that Mitch was on the lookout shift that night.
He spotted you immediately and almost drew his weapon until he saw it was you, eyes red and skin paler than ever. “Y/N, are you feeling alright? You should be asleep.”
Once you started saying what was on your mind, Mitch listened to your worries intently and gave you reassurance. He told you that whatever challenges you face from now on, he’ll be right there with you. Before you knew it, Willy was there to take the next shift.
Mitch didn’t like the idea of you being alone when you were feeling like this, so he offered you his bedroom and said he’d sleep on the floor.
“That’s ridiculous, it’s your bed and it’s big enough for the both of us.” When you guys fell asleep you were as far as possible from each other but at some point, you guys were intertwined in each other’s arms and legs.
Not only was it his attitude towards you, but it was also his attitudes towards others that made everyone in the camp think that you were good for Mitch. He had a short temper as it was, but you were the only one that managed to calm him down and make him listen to the voice of reason.
Finally, you keep Mitch from being too hard on himself when he thinks something is his fault when it either wasn’t, unavoidable or an accident. He trusted you to tell him the truth and in turn, he believed most of what you said or at least took it into consideration. Everyone appreciated the impact you were on their troubled youth.

First Kiss
[Kind of requested by @randomfandom-bs] Summary: After the rescue from the boat, Aasim goes back on a solo mission to find Ruby who has somehow fallen behind. A/N: It took me so long to write this angsty work, because everytime I sat down to write, I’d cry my heart out. Angst is not relaly my forte, that’s why I’m practicing more. Please, don’t hate me and please be kind with your words. I ended up sensitive after writing this. Also big thanks to K who helped me with the proof reading and editing. Love you so much!! Word Count: 4805
They were getting close. Louis and Aasim helped a limping Omar who was too in pain to walk on his own.
Their eagerness to reach Ericson’s was far more powerful than any other encouraging speech Aasim could have come up with at the moment.
It’s not like he wanted to talk anyway. And judging by Omar’s constant wincing, he didn't want to open his mouth, either
And Louis; as much as he’d love to forget the past for one second by coming up with a witty observation or a dumb joke, he just couldn’t.
The minutes they spent running away from the boat in flames were the longest of their lives.
The three of them were all alone, with only each other as company in their silent journey.
They didn’t know anything about their friends. No signs of Clementine, AJ or Violet.
Aasim’s only consolation was the idea of finding them at Ericson’s all safe and sound, and the only way to get that certainty was to keep walking until they reach home.
‘There’s no place like home’ He reminded himself everytime he thought he was about to collapse.
Soon enough, they reached to the familiar traps that lead to the high walls that surrounded their school.
Up in the watchtower, Willy waved at them and hurried down to open the gates for his incoming friends.
Louis helped Omar sit down in one of the benches, before plopping himself down next to him and rested his head on his forearms.
As drained as Aasim was, he didn’t allow himself to sit or stand still.
‘Willy, give them some water, I’m going to get Ruby so she can patch them up’
Before Aasim could run off, Willy grabbed his arm and gave him a silent look.
Aasim could read the worry in his eyes.
‘Where is Ruby, Willy’ He asked, anxiety building up again.
‘I’m all alone in here, Ruby-
‘She wasn’t on the boat, where is she?’ Aasim insisted
‘I don’t know, she should have been here by now, but nobody else has arrived so far’
‘When was the last time you saw her?’
‘B-by the hay, before Clem and the others got into the boat’
‘Shit’ Aasim shook his head ‘You mean she’s still out there?  That was hours ago!’ The volume in his voice made Willy take a step back.
‘We need to wait for the rest to come back. I’m sure she’s with them, man’ Omar said as an failed attempt to calm his friend down.
‘We can’t fucking wait!’ Aasim yelled, tired of everyone’s passiveness ‘Louis could die if ...a-and Ruby could be in serious danger all by herself…We need to get her back’
Words came out of his mouth with difficulty as he spoke, but he didn’t care. It was an urgent matter and his friends needed tot wake up.
When he got no response from any of them, he ran off towards the school, desperately looking for something, anything he could use to defend himself that was better than the small knife he was carrying.
‘Let me go with you. I’m tired of waiting’
Aasim shook his head and put a hand on his shoulder.
‘I need you to take care of them and be alert. Protect the school. Can I count on you?’
Willy nodded and Aasim walked away without further words.
Though tired and hurting, he walked decisively towards the forest in search for his friend.
He needed to find her, or he would lose his mind. Many doubts assaulted his mind as he continued walking.
What if she was hurt?, or worse,
What if he never found her?
She was the only one who could truly help their friends and if she was really gone, then all hope was gone with her.
He shook his questions off, refusing to believe such ugly fate for her.
‘Ruby knows how to defend herself’ He thought, trying to reassure himself, wiping sweat and frustration tears off his face-
All through his hurried walk, he felt observed. He knew there was something following him, but everytime he turned around and observed his surroundings, he found nothing besides trees and leaves. He began thinking maybe it was a squirrel or a rabbit scuttling away as he made his way through the forest, but he never stopped feeling like he wasn’t alone.
The shot of adrenaline he got after he left the school was starting to wear off and he suddenly felt every possible physical discomfort at once. He sat on the ground with a tired groan, never letting go of his bow. Right as he was starting to get comfortable, the sound of rattling leaves in the distance startled him and made him turn around and shoot an arrow without thinking twice.
‘Lord Almighty!’ A voice cried from the shadows. Aasim immediately recognized the distinctive intonation and ran towards its source as fast as the arrow he shot moments earlier.
When he found his friend hidden in the darkness, he couldn’t contain his joy.
‘Ruby!’ He smiled, relieved he didn’t hurt her. He wanted to hug her tight and kiss her, so he could truly convince himself he wasn’t dreaming, but before he could even think of walking closer to her, he got punched in the arm.
‘You could have killed me!’
Aasim didn’t mind the violence or the set of curse words that followed her scold. He knew he had it coming.
Ruby felt silent as he took a moment to really see her under the poor moonlight. Her tired eyes glared at him. She was dirty, furious and just as exhausted as him. Maybe even more, judging by her unusual heavy breathing.
She truly was much stronger that she ever let on. Aasim embraced her, feeling a kind of bliss he hadn’t felt in a long time.
‘I’m sorry about the arrow...I just’ He tried talking through his happy tears ‘I’m just so happy I found you safe and sound’
He tightened his grip around her without noticing and all he got in response was a muffled whimper.
He looked at her as she flinched out of his arms. His worry grew when her guilty eyes met his.
‘Ruby, what’s wrong?’ He asked as softly as he could.
‘I…’ She hesitated ‘I don’t think I’m safe at all…’
‘What do you mean?’
‘I got bit’ She confessed quietly, looking at her feet.
‘What?’ He breathed
‘A walker bit my arm while I was trying to distract the people guarding the entrance of the boat, so the others could get in and-’
‘How, how didn’t you see it coming? Fuck, Ruby, how could you be so…?’ Aasim ranted  angrily as the girl shed her first tears in front of him.
The boy was too busy cursing at everything and everyone to notice the frightened girl before him.
‘I was too focused on not being seen and the walker came out of nowhere and I couldn’t get the motherfucker off in time’ She explained. The boy still couldn’t believe it. There was a lot to process in such a little time, but it would be easier to believe all she was saying if he had solid evidence.
‘Show me’ He demanded.
Ruby shook her head, instinctively covering up her forearm with her left hand
‘No, Aasim, you don’t need to-’
‘Show me, now.’ He insisted with impatience in his voice. He frowned as she painfully lifted up her torn up sleeve. Deep down he knew he didn’t want to see it. He wanted her to tell him she was just joking, but he knew she would never joke with something as serious as that.
His heart sunk when she revealed a noticeable set of teeth marks darkening her skin. A chunk of her forearm was missing.
Ruby winced when he examined the open wound closely. The color had changed from a healthy pink to a yellowish green, due to the infection now running in her blood.
‘Not so hard’ She mumbled at the verge of tears. He was only checking the tension of her skin, but to her, it felt like he was burning her with his fingertips.
‘Can you…?’ He looked up, only to find Ruby already shaking her head. She knew exactly what he was thinking.
‘Even if I tried, cutting my arm wouldn’t help. It’s been too long. I already feel weak, I’m not sure but I think I started a fever, too’
Aasim reached to feel her forehead. His hand almost burned against her skin.
‘How long...until…’
‘I don’t know’ She shrugged ‘It could be a couple minutes, or a couple hours...There’s not really a way of knowin’...All I know is there’s nothing I can do, I’m going to-’
Her quickened breathing soon turned into hyperventilation as she finally surrendered to panic.
Her sorrow started to spread outside her, reaching his friend who was watching her cry her heart out without knowing what to do.
He didn’t give it much thought and embraced the girl to contain her as she kept weeping against his chest.
‘You’ll be alright’ He whispered.
‘I don’t want to die, Aasim, I don’t want to go’ She begged, clinging to him as if some kind of force was pulling her away from him.
‘We need to go back, I’m sure we can find something there that will bring you back to health’
‘Nothing can fix me up, it’s too late for me’ she sniffled ‘ I ain’t comin’ back. I don’t want to be there when I turn. I don’t want to scare or bite anybody’ She looked at Aasim straight in his eyes ‘You best leave me here’
‘What? No!’
‘It’s for the best, trust me’
‘Are you serious? Letting you turn into a walker?’
‘You need to go’ Ruby insisted ‘Just...let nature run its course’
‘Do you really want to be one of...them?’
The shake of her head confused him even more.
‘I don’t want to die, and I don’t want to turn into anything but it’s gonna happen no matter what I do’
‘You’re not thinking this through’
‘I also don’t want you to kill me before my time. It’s not your burden to bear’
‘What kind of person do you think I am? Aasim exclaimed. Killing her wasn’t an option to him and he started to believe maybe she really thought of every possible option available.
Her tearful eyes blinked at him, evidencing her silent resignation.
Aasim tried not to cry in front of her, but it was almost impossible at that point.
‘It’s for the best’ She insisted, quietly, trying to convince herself of her fate and her inability to change it.
‘There’s still so much...I can- You can’t die yet, you hear me? You won’t-’
She lifted her left hand to fix his hair. A sad smile adorned her face as Aasim continued crying.
His heart was pounding fast. It was different from the last time they were alone together, though. Knowing she wasn’t going to be around anymore only made it worse.
He wanted to say all the things he had kept in secret all those years, but she beat him to the punch.
‘If only I knew I would end up like this...I would have used my free time a little better...’
Aasim frowned. Her words caught him off guard.
‘W-what do you mean?’
A soft stroke in his cheek made him close his eyes, giving in completely to her caring touch. His heart raced even faster now. It was starting to feel like the last time, only ten times more intense. He wasn’t imagining anything. She was there for real, being her most tender and sincere self.
In any other scenario, he would have been thrilled to be this close to her in the middle of the forest, but reality was different and as he realized the cruelty of life, he couldn’t stop his tears from flowing.
He couldn’t believe he was losing her right as he got a real chance to let her know how important she was to him; tell her about the countless sleepless nights he spent trying to understand his feelings for her and the many lines he dedicated to her in the dead of the night.
Now, the future he would often envision was lacking its bright light.
He opened his mouth to say something in response to her display of affection, but all his thoughts were grim and she didn’t deserve any more hopelessness, so he decided to stay silent and show back his love in another manner.
Ruby’s hand rested on his chest as he kissed her forehead. She suddenly felt the world was spinning around her. Her eyes closed slowly as her head nodded against the boy.
‘Careful’ He helped her sit down.
‘I got a little sleepy’ She said with a drowsy smile, trying to stop her own body from trembling.
He let her lean on him, passing one arm over her shoulder. The night was at its darkest point. The air was cold and reeked of death. He could only imagine how scared she was.
Despite everything, her smile remained. At least he was there.
‘I don’t know if you know this, but-’ She coughed ‘I used to have a crush on you’
  He never knew
‘Really?’ He breathed, blushing in the dark as he felt her nodding against his chest ‘I never noticed’
‘It was silly at first. It started when I first got here. I was a mess and you would never say a word. I guess I wanted to be like you but I couldn’t keep quiet if it killed me and the other boys would always make me so angry all the time’ Aasim chuckled at the memory, as she continued talking ‘I still find it cool, that you are like that-I still like you, you’re the only person I’ve ever liked...you know, in a special way’
Aasim took a couple of seconds to process Ruby’s words. Maybe she was delirious, but he wasn’t asking for clarification in a moment like that. Instead, he took a chance and reciprocated her feelings.
‘I’ve always liked you for your energy, from the little feisty girl I met years ago, to the driven woman you are now. I have to admit, sometimes, I wish I could have gone and punch a couple of teachers like you did in some occasions’
Ruby looked up, while he mindlessly played with her hair and spoke casually about his feelings towards her. She wanted to ask if he was serious, but his gentle touch was evidence enough.
A sense of safety surrounded her, making her forget these were her last moments.
‘Well ain’t you cute’ She whispered with some difficulty, forcing a grin through her stinging pain.
‘It was a long time ago’ He shrugged.
‘I wish we could have talked about this sooner’ She confessed ‘Imagine how different this would have been if we…’
She forgot what she was saying when she looked up and found him starting at her lovingly. She knew what he had in mind and just as he leaned closer, she flinched and quickly scooted away from him.
‘I don’t want you to end up like this’ She covered her wounded arm, fear running cold in her veins.
He was hurt, not by her rejective attitude, but her fear. He wanted to make her feel better, but didn’t know how.
He apologized, extending his hand to her. When he got no answer, he crawled closer and held her left hand.
‘I’m sorry if I was too invasive’
‘I didn’t mean to, I just- I really don’t want to hurt you’
‘You couldn’t…’
Ruby let go of his hand and traced his mouth with her thumb- Aasim listened to her soft plea.
‘Promise me. I need to be sure you won’t get...this if we kiss’
‘I don’t think it works like that’ He chuckled. She kept serious and as soon as he read her expression, he corrected himself ‘I promise’
There was no way to know for sure if he was lying.
Not even he knew if that was a possibility.
At this point, he didn’t care.
Maybe she wanted him to kiss her despite her biggest fears.
Maybe he could kiss her fears away..
She believed so as their lips met. For one second, she forgot about the world ending, at least for her.
Their first kiss burned in their mouths while a mixture of newfound feelings and sensations filled their minds.
She wrapped her arms around him and buried her face in his chest, still not believing what happened.
She didn’t care about the pain anymore. She only cared about the moment she just had with Aasim and how happy he made her feel, even if it was for a couple of minutes.
She made a mental list of all the things she’d give just to be like that with him for as long as they wanted.
But time was running low quickly. She felt weaker by the minute.
She tried to pull away from Aasim, but he knew what would happen if he let her go.
He tightened his grip as she tried to struggle.
‘Come on, now...’ She sighed ‘You have to let me go, it could happen anytime and I don’t want you near enough to hurt you’
‘I’m not leaving you’ He insisted ‘You’re not dying alone’
She wanted to yell at him to leave her alone, but she knew well she would only be wasting her last bit of energy.
Instead, she stopped struggling and went back to her quiet begging. He couldn’t understand her, but decided to let her go.
‘Thank you’ She smiled and kissed his cheek ‘For bein' here’
Right as she finished her sentence, her smile faded as her vision was covered by a fog-like whiteness. She felt her own voice echoing Aasim’s name as she slipped out of consciousness.
He watched in panic as she collapsed against him.
Trying to regain his strength, he cradled her, hoping she’d wake up soon. She never responded to her name, no matter how many times Aasim called. Eventually, he stopped insisting.
He laid her on the ground, making sure she was comfortable in her deep sleep, and lay down beside her for a while, silently considering his options and all the possible consequences to his actions as he admired the beautiful starry night above them. It reminded him of the particular shine in Ruby’s eyes every time she talked about her plants or the animals she used to have as pets when she was little.
A smile flourished among these melancholic thoughts.
He looked over at her, realizing for the first time her eyes might not open ever again and the breathtaking glimmer in her look was now a thing of the past; something he would treasure as one of his most precious memories from now on.
Only then he realized how much he would miss her.
Struggling with the panic building up inside him, he decided to check her vitals, just like she taught him once.
She was hardly breathing, the beat of her heart was getting slower and slower as minutes passed.
Helpless, he brushed a strand of her fire-red hair while fighting back tears.
He glanced at her arm. Most of the skin around the wound was now blackened and decaying due to the severe infection.
He looked around them. Someone had to be around. He refused to believe this was the end. Someone would eventually come over and save them both.
But that didn’t happen. No matter how long he waited, he was alone in this. Nobody came to their rescue and Ruby was still unconscious next to him.
He finally gave in to his despair. The cursing became recurring and loud. Nobody was really there to see him break down, anyways.
His tears fell on Ruby’s jacket as he leaned over. She was dying before his eyes and there was nothing he could do to save her. He shook his head, refusing to believe that with the last drop of hope he still had.
There were still so many unsaid things he would have loved to share with her; so many gifts, so many experiences he never go to give her. And all because she was bitten while trying to save him.
Aasim dried his tears with his sleeve and held her hand.
‘I love you, Ruby’ He kissed her forehead before he realized he was already saying his goodbyes ‘Thank you for keeping us alive for so long’
Deep down, he knew she couldn’t hear him, no matter how much he wanted to reach out to her, wherever she was. He uttered no further words. Instead, he watched in silence as her once pink cheeks gradually turned into a sickly yellow and then a lifeless gray.
He soon realized she had stopped breathing.
When he finally came to terms with the fact that she was gone for good, he stood up and wiped the last few tears off his face . With his bow in one hand and an arrow in the other, he walked a little farther from Ruby, waiting for the inevitable.
About ten feet away, he heard the distinct groan of a recently turned walker. He didn’t turn around, he didn’t want to shoot her, even when he knew that wasn’t really her. Not anymore.
  She never wanted to die.
  She never wanted to turn.
It would be cruel of him to let her wander the forest like that.
He turned around and tensed his bow.
He wanted to apologize to her. He knew all that wasn’t fair. Life was brutal. Especially when it decided to give Ruby a premature death, and especially when it decided to give him the opportunity to meet and love Ruby only to take her away from him just as he was finally going to be loved back.
  He aimed directly at her.
Life was unfair to them both. Death was cruel, too.
“Why did it have to be her? Why not take me, instead?”
He let her walk closer to him before he shot his arrow straight in her right eye.
Her body fell to the ground slowly, her left hand reaching out to him in a last attempt to get him, although Aasim read that as her last attempt to stay among the living.
He dropped his bow and ran closer to her lifeless body. Once it finally stopped moving, he turned it over to retrieve his arrow as it was is routine when killing walkers.
He grabbed the arrow, but he couldn’t bring himself to pull it out.
His stomach couldn’t handle it. He stepped back hastily, retching. He fell on his knees, feeling sick of himself.
Even when it was all over, he still felt like the worst person alive.
He fell to his side and curled up, unable to contain himself, mourning in long wails, feeling almost as if his own soul was escaping his body.
  Nobody was coming to help.
  Hope was already lost.
He remembered the small knife he had in his back pocket and took it out to examine it while toying with the idea of quitting the losing game he dared to call life.
He sighed deeply, and closing his eyes, he placed the sharp blade against his neck.
He couldn’t. He didn’t have the guts- or at least that’s what he kept repeating over and over while his agitated chest kept making him cry out of sheer panic. Right as he was about to push the knife against his skin, he heard his name loud and clear.
He looked over at Ruby’s body, but it was right as he had left it. Instead, he was lifted up by two people.
On his right, there was a guy he had never seen before. On his left, Clementine.
‘Let’s take you back’ She said, taking the knife from his hands and putting it away.
Aasim shook his head violently , trying to speak through his tears.
‘What’s the matter?’ The stranger asked Clementine in a soft voice, but she was just as lost.
Aasim tried again, but AJ spoke first when he walked a little farther.
‘Ruby…?’
Clementine walked closer to where AJ was to confirm the little boy’s suspicions.
In the faint first morning light, they could clearly see it was indeed Ruby’s corpse, turned into a walker, with an arrow in her eye.
‘What the fuck happened here?’ Clementine asked, turning to Aasim, who was too ashamed to look at her in the eyes.
‘I couldn’t save her. She got bit and I couldn’t save-’
‘We can ask all the questions later, we need to help him soon, he’s clearly not okay’ The stranger interceded.
’N-No!’ Aasim cried ‘ We have to get her back. She can’t be-she can’t stay here. We need to bury her, we need to take her home, we-’ Clementine interrupted his rambling with a tight hug.
‘We’re not leaving her here. She going home with us’ She reassured him.
After a while, they got everything ready and headed back to the school.
The welcome was warm until everyone saw what Clementine, James and AJ brought along with them.
‘Ruby’ Willy whispered, watching in disbelief as James and Aasim walked inside, carrying her body.
The atmosphere turned tense with the general shocked silence.
Aasim walked away from the small crowd without saying a word. Nobody stopped him as he grabbed the shovel and started digging next to Ms. Martin’s grave.
His pacing showed his determination to make it as deep as he could. He felt as if he might break down again if he ever stopped.
‘Here’ Clementine interrupted his train of thought ‘Let me help...you need to rest’ She took the shovel from his hands. Aasim walked inside the greenhouse. He looked around, looking for anything alive that could serve as an ornament to Ruby’s grave.
She would have wanted it to look pretty.
He was too focused on a pot with tiny white flowers, when a knock on the door startled him. He turned around to see Louis on the doorway, looking devastated.
‘Come in’ Aasim said, leaving the small pot back on the table. Louis walked in, and before Aasim could say anything, he was a being hugged again.
Louis wasn’t attempting to give his friend comfort. He was looking for consolation himself and from Louis’ silent tears, Aasim realized he was not the only one hurting from Ruby’s parting. The two of them stood in the middle of the greenhouse, crying into each other’s shoulders the loss of their dear friend, until Clementine announced quietly that it was time for the burial.
Louis walked out, but Clementine stood in Aasim’s way just as he was heading out.
‘Back there, when we found you guys, you had this in your hand’ She pulled out his knife out of her pócket ‘Can I ask-?’
‘No’ Aasim interrupted ‘No, please don’t ask’
‘I hate to be that person, but you realize that killing yourself wouldn’t have fixed anything? We would have lost you, too…’
‘I understand’ He looked away, clearly uncomfortable with Clementine’s little lecture.
‘I mean, this is not over yet, and we already lost Ruby-’
‘I know. Clementine. I was there’ He snapped at her, walking out.
Right outside, Tenn was putting a flower crown on Ruby’s head. Violet held the crying boy as she said a few last words in her memory while James refilled the grave with dirt.
Aasim kept quiet the whole time. He felt like staying silent for the rest of his life.
After everyone left, he sat in front of the grave to plant the little flowers he had found earlier.
‘I’m going to miss her’ Willy mumbled as he sat next to him ‘I can’t believe it...First Mitch and then, Ruby…’ A hopeless sigh escaped his mouth. Aasim looked over just to find a broken little boy. He believed Willy had adopted many personality traits from Mitch, but only then he realized how much he truly took after him. Rough on the outside, but forever a lost boy on the inside.
‘Willy…I’m sorry’ He wanted to explain more about how it all went down, but couldn’t find the words. Losing Mitch had already been a tough blow on him. Now, he lost the only mother figure he could clearly remember  ‘I’m sorry I couldn’t bring her back alive’
‘Just...promise me you wont die soon?’ He said, sniffling. Aasim looked at him as the boy faced him to insist ‘Promise?’
He passed one arm over his shoulder and cuddled him.
‘I promise I won’t die soon’ He muttered.

tws: mentions of death (marlon, mitch), clem being sad
you've done enough — clementine
you knew the world was shitty, though there was nothing you could do about it. at least you had her. clementine.
she was gorgeous. she was kind. she had a heart of gold even during the apocalypse. she was protective and she was caring. she was everything you wanted in a friend.
of course, it was scary when aj, the kid with her, killed marlon. but you voted for them to stay. you'd been at ericson's since the start of the apocalypse and they were exactly what it needed. marlon was your friend, at least you thought he was, but the idea of him trading them off to the raiders for safety made your heart sink. how could he be that selfish? how could he trade-off sophie and minnie like it was nothing?
it was over, you reminded yourself. lilly was dead and the raiders were gone, and you were safe again. you were devastated at the thought of mitch's death, and you wished he were still around, but you were happy, for the most part.
you were happy with everyone, even with all of the loss.
clem sat next to you in her bed. the two of you were spending more time together, and you were happy. you had feelings for her. you knew she probably didn't know about them, but if she did she was good at hiding it.
her crutches rested against the table along with her hat, and it was almost strange seeing her without it on. you wondered how long she'd had it for. it'd gotten raggedy, but she was attached to it. you assumed it was given to her before everything went to shit all those years ago. it felt like forever ago.
you let your gaze fall to clementine. her eyes were glued to her leg, or, what was left of it. she got bit, and aj managed to cut off her leg fast enough to where it didn't spread. you were beyond grateful for his actions and his bravery in such a stressful situation. you would've done the same thing. you couldn't lose her.
she had a sad look on her face, her bottom lip jutted out a bit in a small pout. you managed a weak smile and she gives you one back. you don't know what to say to her, so you decided to sit in silence for a few minutes, letting her think about what she needed to.
"did i do a good job?" her voice rang out in the quiet dorm room, and you turn your attention to her again. "with what? aj?" she nodded. it's all she could muster. "of course you did, clem. what's wrong?" you turned your body to her, so your eyes meet hers. she avoided your gaze, looking almost embarrassed. you noticed her eyes on her leg again.
"just thinking. i know that i got him here in the end, and i know that he's safe. but i- don't know." clem whispered, biting at the inside of her cheek, her head turning to the door. aj was outside somewhere, spending time with someone other than herself.
"he's happy, clem. he's happy and he's alive. you don't.. you don't have to worry." you reassured her, your hand resting on her shoulder as you smile. her eyes met yours and she smiled back at you, taking in a breath. "thank you. i wish i could do more around here again but.. you know," she gestured to her leg, and her gaze shifts to the crutches, "this."
"you've done enough." you told her.
she was so beautiful. her hair fell into her face, the curls framing her features so nicely. she was still covered in bruises, but they were beginning to fade as time went on. her eyes were bright as she looked at you, and you couldn't help but reach out and tuck a strand of her hair behind her ear.
you froze as soon as you realize what you'd done, and she raises an eyebrow as you pull your hand away from her. she let out a short chuckle, her hand resting on your thigh as she leaned towards you. her eyes were closed now, her head tilting to the side.
without thinking, she pressed her lips to yours. they were rough but so soft at the same time. she kissed you gently. it didn't last for very long, but when she pulled away, your eyes were wide and your mouth fell open.
"did you just kiss me?" you asked, and she nodded, shrugging her shoulders. "i wanted to. i've.. liked you for awhile." clem admitted, and you felt a smile starting to form on your features.
"i.. i like you too, clem. a lot."
she just laughed, her hand finding yours. she didn't bother looking down to find it, her thoughts and mind too fixated on you to care. her fingers entwine with yours. "yeah?"
"yeah." you confirmed.
"i hoped so." she squeezed your hand, and you returned it. the smile on your face never dropping as you admired every little part of her.

A Comforting Melody
Summary: Clementine wanders around Ericson with Maisy to find Louis who has a new song to show her.
Word Count: 1796
Read on AO3:
Clementine walked through the silent hallways of the dorms, her footsteps the only sound save for the muffled voices outside in the courtyard. She took a deep breath and enjoyed the peace of the moment before Maisy stirred in her sling. Her baby began to cry softly and Clementine rocked her lightly as she walked forward.
“Hey, it's okay. I’m right here,” Clementine smiled down softly at her daughter. Maisy looked up at her mom with large eyes and seemed to calm down a bit. Clementine gave a small sigh of relief, glad that Maisy had settled down. She continued down the hallway and noticed that the sun was setting which meant that dinner wouldn’t be too long from now.
Her eyes wandered back down to the sling and noticed that Maisy looked rather sleepy. Maybe she could sneak in a quick nap time for Maisy but Clementine also wanted to check in with Louis. Considering her options for a moment, Clementine opted to find her husband before settling Maisy down for a nap. Wandering towards the doors Clementine carefully opened them and was hit with the sounds of her friends happily going about their daily lives.
Aasim had just gotten back from hunting and immediately went over to Ruby after setting down the catches for the day. He always made sure to find Ruby first to reassure her that he was okay after a day of hunting. Aasim smiled softly at his wife and stole a quick kiss before holding out his hands to hold his son. Ruby handed Zachariah over and Aasim gently held his son and placed a kiss on his forehead before rocking him softly.
To the right of the happy family Willy was busy trying to learn how to braid hair from Violet and Prisha. Renata seemed just as intent on learning the special art of hair braiding. Allison sat before Renata and seemed somewhat reluctant about being her guinea pig for this but the small smile on her lips made it clear that Allison wouldn’t say no. Meanwhile James was busy helping out with dinner prep with Omar. The pair spoke softly as the faint sound of knives slicing through the vegetables filled the air around them.
“Willy! It’s your turn for watch!” AJ called out from the watchtower, cupping his hands around his mouth. Willy groaned in annoyance, his hands hovering over Prisha’s hair. He was just about to start the first few steps on his journey to becoming the best hair braider of all. .
“Don’t worry, you can always practice later,” Prisha smiled back at Willy who returned the smile.
“Okay,” Willy hopped up from his spot and jogged forward towards AJ who was already waiting at the base of the watchtower. “Any funny looking walkers today?”
AJ thought deeply for a moment at that question. “I think one was stuck in a tree,”
“Really?” Willy snatched up the binoculars from AJ and scrambled up the ladder to the watchtower. He immediately looked out to see a walker who had its hand stuck in a tree. With a groan the walker yanked on its arm, causing it to tear off as it continued after a rabbit that was far too speedy for it to catch. Willy laughed and continued to watch on. AJ watched his best friend for a few seconds before his eyes caught sight of Clementine.
“Clem!” AJ ran forward with a huge smile. His eyes grew large when he noticed his little sister sleepily blinking at him from inside the slink. “Shit. I mean, shoot!” AJ quickly corrected himself before he realized he was talking too loudly again. A look of frustration covered his face as his lips pulled into a pout.
“It’s okay, kiddo,” Clementine laughed and ruffled the top of AJ’s afro. “Maisy and I are just going to say hi to Louis before Maisy gets her nap time.”
“It’s Maisy’s nap time? I gotta grab my shiv and go on patrol!” AJ didn’t wait a single second for Clementine to respond and was off like a shot.
“AJ, where’s Louis?” Clementine called out but he was already long gone. With a soft chuckle she shook her head and continued forward. She’d just have to find Louis on her own. AJ tended to get like this whenever Maisy was settling down for a nap. He’d either insist on going on a patrol to make sure no walkers got in and there were no threats around or he’d sit on the bed nearby his sister and keep watch. Either way AJ was determined that no one ever hurt Maisy in any way. Clementine found the whole thing very sweet, how AJ always wanted to protect his family so fiercely and how deeply he loved Maisy. It warmed Clementine’s heart.
Clementine strolled forward, lightly bouncing Maisy as she walked. If Louis wasn’t in the courtyard and most of the daily chores were done, then there was only one place he would be. Clementine immediately made a beeline to the admin building and knew her hunch had been right. For as soon as she had entered she could hear the warm, soft melody of the piano. Clementine felt a smile pull on her lips as she wandered forward towards the music room. Peeking her head inside she saw Louis, lost in his music as his fingers danced upon the piano keys. He continued to play for a few more seconds before he felt Clementine’s presence. Glancing over, Louis’ face instantly brightened when he saw his wife. Sliding off the piano bench, he strolled forward and captured Clementine’s lips in a soft, tender kiss.
“Hello, my darling. What brings you here? Did my alluring music draw you in?” Louis grinned before his smile softened as he became lost in Clementine’s eyes.
“It definitely helped me find you.” Clementine reached out and gently squeezed Louis’ hand. Her heart felt calm and light like it always did when she was around Louis. The two shared a smile before Louis noticed the sling.
“And who is this a-Mais-ing bundle of joy?” Louis gently picked up Maisy and began to rock her. Maisy smiled and gave a small laugh as she reached up to try and grab one of Louis’ dreadlocks. “Damn, how did our kid turn out to be so cute?” Louis looked over at Clementine with a warm smile.
“I think we’re both pretty cute so it only makes sense. Plus she has some of our best features, like your freckles,” Clementine poked one of the freckles on Louis’ face before bopping his nose. Louis’ nose crinkled with joy and he leaned forward and kissed Clementine once more. He looked down at his daughter with pride and love.
“Well, she had your smile,” Louis felt his heart grow warm when he looked at his daughter. “Oh, how about Maisy takes her nap in here? She always loves the sound of the piano plus the rocking chair is in here,” Louis motioned with his head over to the rocking chair that Willy and Prisha had made during the months leading up to Maisy and Zach being born.
“I thought the rocking chair would be on the porch of the admin building,” Clementine commented as she walked side by side with Louis towards the rocking chair.
“It was but as it turns out Zachariah also finds piano music calming. So sometimes when Ruby or Aasim want a quick break from their kid crying they sneak in here with Zach and soon enough my music conks him out.” Louis smiled over at Clementine and gently placed Maisy back into her mother’s arms.
He pressed a quick kiss to Maisy’s forehead then was pleasantly surprised when Clementine captured his lips in a kiss. Louis’ heart soared and he felt like he always did around Clementine, filled with hope and joy. He gave a dorky grin then pulled on the sides of his coat. “I happened to be working on a special little piece for our family when you strolled in. I’ll have to play it again when AJ is around. Where is he by the way?”
“He’s out on patrol. I told him Maisy was taking a nap,” Clementine gently rocked back and forth in the chair.
“Gotta hand it to that little dude, he’s nothing if not protective. It's adorable, him being so protective of our family,” Louis smiled softly; the pride for AJ was clear in his voice. “Well, he’ll have to hear this song later but for now I can give you a sneak peek,”
Louis’ smile was infectious and Clementine couldn’t help but return it. “I’d love that. Let’s see what you wrote this time, Freckles,” Clementine watched as Louis spun around dramatically, causing his tailcoats to flutter lightly. Louis pushed the tailcoats back and sat down. Taking a deep breath, he began to play the song. It was a soft, joyful song. The notes slowly filled the air, complementing each other as the song progressed. His fingers brushed against the keys and fluttered around.
Clementine listened to the music, closing her eyes to soak in every single note as she rocked back and forth in the chair. Louis’ music had always been special; the emotions that he captured in them were always so strong and clear. The notes danced around the room, filling it with the passion that was poured into the song. The joy of it, the tender love, the feeling of comfort and safety. Clementine felt like she could listen to this song forever. Before she knew it the song had ended.
“There, first time played,” Louis spun around on the piano bench and gave his wife a loving smile. Clementine opened her eyes and looked over at Louis.
“I loved it. Does it have a name?”
“Shelter,” Louis awkwardly scratched the back of his head. “Not the most original name, I know.”
“It's perfect.” Clementine’s words made Louis’ eyes shine with joy. Without thinking twice Louis got up and quietly jogged over to steal another kiss from Clementine. Looking down, he saw that Maisy was fast asleep.
“Works every time,” Louis gently took Clementine’s hand and brushed his thumb on top of it. The two watched their daughter for a moment before Clementine spoke up.
“Could you play the song again?”
Louis’ smile grew and he placed a quick peck on Clementine’s cheek. “Of course, my darling.”
Giving his wife’s hand a soft squeeze Louis moved back over to the piano and began the song once more. Clementine closed her eyes and took in every single note. Her heart filled with peace and abundant joy. To think that she had a home and a family. Clementine couldn’t help but feel extremely lucky. She was home.

Shattered for a Moment
Summary: Violet is having a rough day and is hoping for a moment of peace.
Word Count: 1389
Read on AO3:
Today sucks. That was the thought circulating around in Violet’s head as she dealt with an unruly customer at the front of the house. It was just the cherry on top of a bad day. First she hadn’t been able to sleep well; nightmares had shaken her up pretty badly. She had quietly slipped out of bed and out of her girlfriend’s arms, careful not to  wake up Prisha. She didn’t want to bother her with something like that. So she had stayed up and sat on the balcony looking at the stars for a while to hopefully make her feel better. They did help a little but she never really fell back asleep.
Then when she got to work it seemed like the day was determined to get shittier. The restaurant was having one of its busiest days yet and with that many customers came an asshole or two who made a big deal out of nothing. Violet, being the one in charge of the front of the house, got the great honor of dealing with them. All of those customers were a headache and by the time she had kicked the last one out the front door she was completely drained.
The blonde’s eyes wandered over to the clock. She let out a sigh of relief when she saw that it was her lunch break. Violet slipped away from the front of the house and into the break room. She took a deep breath and sat down for a few minutes to let all her negative emotions slip away before she went back to the front of the house to get Prisha so they could eat lunch together. After about five minutes the blonde pushed her chair back, walking outside the room and towards the bar. Her face immediately brightened when she saw Prisha, a warm fuzzy feeling washing over her body and easing her nerves.
Prisha looked over with a loving smile. “Violet, here to take me away for lunch?”
“That’s right.” Violet took a seat on one of the barstools. She leaned her elbows on the counter and looked over at Prisha.
“Alright, well I just need a moment to clean up,” Prisha turned and began to put away a bottle of liquor or two. She moved swiftly, trying to finish up the task as fast as possible so she could enjoy more time with Violet even if it was mere seconds. She glided across the floor and reached for a shot glass but her grip on it wasn’t strong enough and in a moment the glass had collided with the ground. For a moment the sound rang out as the glass shattered to countless pieces.
“Oh damn it,” Prisha sighed and moved to get the broom when she heard one of the barstools scrape across the floor roughly and clatter to the ground. Glancing up she noticed Violet had gotten out of her seat too abruptly causing it to fall over. Her body was trembling and her eyes were fragile and scared. Before Prisha could put together the pieces of what was happening her girlfriend walked away, disappearing down the hall and into the break room.
“Violet, wait,” Prisha threw a napkin over the glass to remind her future self where it was and quickly picked up the chair before making her way to where Violet had gone off to. Slowly Prisha opened up the door to see her girlfriend hunched over in the corner. Her arms were wrapped around her knees and her eyes were glassy with unshed tears. Prisha’s feet slowly moved forward as she said her girlfriend’s name. “Violet?”
“I’m fine!” Violet gritted her teeth and snapped before her eyes grew large as she realized who she had just shouted at. “Shit, sorry,” Violet’s voice sounded softer than usual, a type of delicacy that only appeared whenever something had reminded her of her past.
“It’s alright,” Prisha took a seat by Violet and softly took her hand in her own. Violet flinched for a millisecond before her shoulders relaxed. The two sat in silence for a few minutes; the stillness of the room and the warmth of her girlfriend’s presence seemed to calm down Violet.
“How about we go to the park to have lunch?” Prisha’s offer made Violet glance over and she gave a short nod. With that two got up from their spots and grabbed their lunches before walking out the front door of Ericson’s Diner hand in hand. A gentle breeze blew past them, causing small wisps of hair to fall free from Prisha’s braid.
“I saw you had to deal with quite a few unruly customers today,” Prisha looked over at Violet who gave an annoyed sigh.
“Honestly, I don’t even know why they bother showing up if they’re just gonna be assholes who bother the waitresses and shit,” Violet shook her head and kicked a pebble. “Made the day shittier.”
“I can imagine,” Prisha’s thumb gently brushed against the top of Violet’s hand as they continued to walk down the sidewalk and towards their destination. Violet’s eyebrows knit together in concentration as if she was figuring out whether or not to do something. Her eyes searched the ground as if it would give her that answer, her mind spinning a bit until she felt her hand be gently squeezed. She looked over to Prisha who had a warm smile on her face. “You don’t need to dwell on that moment back at the bar. We don’t have to focus on it, but also know that if you want to talk I’ll listen.”
Violet studied Prisha’s face for a moment then glanced back down at her feet.
“Okay,” The blonde muttered and focused on walking towards the park. After a minute or two had passed she spoke up once more. “It was just an instinct, nothing else.” Violet took a deep breath. “Guess the sound just reminded me of the bad days.”
Prisha nodded. “I figured that to be the case. Seeing how you already were having a rough day, I thought some space away from everything would be nice.”
“Yeah,” A soft smile appeared on Violet’s lips as the couple continued to walk forward. Within seconds the conversation shifted to more casual, lighthearted topics and soon they found the perfect spot at the park. A quiet, secluded corner covered by tall, large trees that provided tons of shade for them to enjoy. Violet and Prisha sat down and began to talk as they ate their lunches.
“Louis wants to go on a double date this weekend,” Violet tossed a chip in her mouth.
“Oh?” Prisha’s voice took on an excited tone. The prospect of a date always made her happy. “Where did he propose we go this time?”
“To a carnival. Says it would be a ton of fun and he found one where they supposedly have the world’s greatest chicken nuggets.” Violet dusted off her hands, placing them in the grass behind her as she leaned back.
“Well, then it sounds like we have to go,” Prisha smiled and finished off the rest of her sandwich.
“Anyone can put “the world’s greatest” in front of any food. But it does sound fun.” Violet fell back into the grass and looked up at the clouds.
Prisha moved the brown paper bags out of the way and lay beside her. “Cotton candy, the ferris wheel, winning giant stuffed animals... It does sound like quite the exciting double date.” She smiled over at Violet.
“Alright, I’ll let Lou know then,” Violet returned the smile then looked back at the cloud, her hand resting on top of Prisha’s as they two watched the lazily rolling white clouds move through the sky. Violet began to point out what some of the clouds looked like to her while Prisha added commentary and gave her own opinions on what the clouds resembled. Violet gave a soft laugh and continued to point out different clouds as Prisha’s gaze turned away from the sky and over to her girlfriend for a moment. Violet’s pale green eyes were back to their soft warmth - any hint of sadness or pain had dissipated. The sight made Prisha’s heart grow calm. Soon she returned her attention back to the sky, enjoying the simple, sweet moment with her girlfriend.

The Comfort of a Blanket
Summary: The twins and Tenn watch a movie and have a pleasant evening together until something happens to Minnie's blanket.
Read on A03:
Minnie sat on the couch enjoying the comfort of her blanket as she watched a movie with her siblings. They were watching Spiderman: Into the SpiderVerse for the millionth time. It was one of Tenn’s favorite movies so whenever he could convince them they would sit down and watch it. Tenn’s eyes were glued to the screen as he watched the different heroes face off against Kingpin. His body leaned forward and his arms wrapped tighter and tighter with each second of the film. Sophie wasn’t paying much attention to the TV; her focus was entirely on her sketchbook.
The sound of her pencil racing across paper could be heard faintly behind the loud action scene. When they had started this watchthrough of the movie, Sophie had been hit with a bolt of inspiration. Quickly mumbling that she was drawing different people from Ericson Diner with their own superspider designs, she’d gotten completely lost in her art, only occasionally glancing up before being hit with another wave of inspiration. They were getting towards the end of the movie when Minnie leaned forward to grab the popcorn only for a drink to be tipped over, the contents of which landed directly on her blanket.
“Shit!” Minnie jumped up to her feet, causing her siblings to also stir and look over with concern. Sophie haphazardly tried to grab the remote, pausing the movie after a minute.
“Are you okay, Minnie?” Tenn looked back at his older sister who looked devastated by the event that had played out.
“I’m fine,” She let out a sad sigh, lifting up her blanket “I can’t say the same for my blanket though,” She carefully examined the stain that was forming where the drink had spilled. Renata had given her this blanket and now she had ruined it.
“Don’t worry, Minnie. We can wash it. “ Sophie walked over to stand beside her.
“I don’t want it to get damaged or anything though,” Minnie had a worried expression on her face as she looked at her twin.
“That won’t be a problem,” Sophie gently took the blanket from her sister’s hands before motioning Minnie to follow her to the laundry room. “If we use this setting and grab-'' Sophie grunted as she stood on her tippy toes to reach the laundry detergent, letting out a happy noise when she had succeeded, “Grab the unscented tide pods,” Sophie glanced over at her twin who gave her approval before she tossed the blanket into the washer along with the detergent.
With a few button presses the washer began its progress, slowly spinning around the blanket.
“Is everything okay?” Tenn called from the back living room.
“Yeah, everything’s okay,” Minnie replied, walking back with Sophie so they could finish up the movie. They only had about fifteen minutes left which felt unusually long for Minnie as she waited impatiently for the washer to be done. When the credits had rolled the three siblings sat around for a moment, not sure what to do next.
“People are going to flip out when they see these,” Sophie carefully placed away her sketchpad with an excited smile.
“So, what do we do next?” Minnie asked, hoping her siblings would come up with some good ways to pass the time.
“We could do that art challenge that I’ve seen lately,” Tenn nervously fidgeted with his fingers as he spoke.
“Oh, which one?” Sophie immediately perked up whenever art was involved.
“It’s the one where one person draws someone in the room then they pass the paper to the next person who draws them and so on until everyone has been drawn,” Tenn explained the rules as carefully and clearly as he could, hoping his sisters would agree to the idea.
“Sounds fun to me! What about you, Minnie? You game?” Sophie looked over at Minnie who seemed less excited at the idea. Unlike her two other siblings she sucked at art, especially drawing.
“I don’t know,” She paused when she saw Tenn’s face fall. “Ok, I’ll give it a shot.”
Sophie and Tenn looked over at each other, overjoyed that Minnie had agreed. Sophie soon ran off to find some paper, returning swiftly with a handful of pencils and paper. Tenn was the first up.
After finding a good angle to draw from he started his sketch of Minnie. His eyes became laser focused on the paper as he drew. After ten minutes he turned around his paper, proudly displaying his art.
“That’s really good!” Sophie exclaimed, leaning forward to get a closer look.
“It really is,” Minnie agreed, impressed that he was able to get so many of her features right.
Tenn looked away, the smile on his face growing at his sisters' praise. Minnie was up next. Picking up the pencil she began her sketch what she was sure was going to turn out to be a disservice to Sophie’s face. Her tongue stuck out slightly as she concentrated on her sketch, erasing a section before trying again. After about fifteen minutes she had decided it was as good as it could be and reluctantly showed it to her siblings. Sophie grasped the paper, bringing it closer to her face.
“I love it,” She whispered, staring at her sister’s art.
“It’s hideous,” Minnie mumbled, falling back into the couch.
“I think it’s good,” Tenn offered his sister a gentle smile which she returned.
“I’ll be right back. I gotta add these to the collection,” Before Minnie could object Sophie was gone, her feet loudly banging on the steps as she ran upstairs. After a few minutes she returned, a huge grin on her face.
“Alright, I guess it’s my turn,” Sophie plopped herself back in her spot, snatching up the pencil as she stared at her brother. She studied his face for a few minutes before she started. Her pencil lightly brushed against the page as she worked, her eyes lighting up as she continued to draw. After around twenty minutes she dramatically turned around the paper, revealing a beautiful black and white sketch of Tenn. He looked so peaceful as a kind smile played on his lips.
“Holy shit, Soph, your art just keeps getting better and better!” Minnie exclaimed.
Sophie nervously played with her cap at Minnie’s compliment, a shy smile on her face. “Aw, thanks,”
Minnie paused when she heard the washer signalling that the cycle had been done. She got up from her spot and made her way over to the laundry room, switching the blanket over to the dryer.
“Make sure to put it on the gentlest cycle,” Sophie’s voice carried over from the back living room.
“Ok, got it,” Minnie double checked the setting. Starting up the cycle, she returned to her siblings.
“So what’s the next game?” Sophie kicked her legs lazily on the side of the couch.
“I could get my guitar and we could make up some songs,” Minnie offered to which her siblings immediately agreed. Getting up, she made her way to her room where her black acoustic guitar laid proudly on its stand. Securing the strap, she made her way back to where her siblings were already trying to come up with some fun lyrics.
“So how are we going to do this?” Minnie asked as she tuned her guitar.
“We should each come up with one line of lyrics and then the next person goes until we complete a song.” Sophie suggested, sitting up from her spot.
“Alright,” Minnie took a few more minutes tuning her guitar then began to strum some notes for her siblings to start out the song.
“There once was a dog that was a poodle,” Tenn began to sing softly.
“He looked like a day old noodle,” Sophie sang out, not caring that her voice wasn’t any good.
“And he had buggy pupils,” Minnie added.
The song continued on from there. Each sibling struggled to find a good sentence to add to the song when it was their turn. After it had finished they decided to play a few more rounds which went just as well as the first time.
“Oh, Minnie, can you play that song you wrote the other day?” Tenn asked, leaning back in his chair as he hugged a couch pillow.
“Sure,” Minnie replied with a gentle smile on her lips. The song started out slow and quiet as Minnie’s voice gently entered in. Soon the whole room was filled with her singing as her siblings sat back, completely taken in by the song. After a few minutes the song had finished. Sophie quickly requested one of her favorite songs of Minnie’s. The three of them sat around, the melody of the guitar and the soft cadence of Minnie’s voice the only things audible in the room. Tenn and Sophie kept making requests until Minnie stated that she needed a little break. Her fingers absentmindedly strummed the guitar as she chatted with her brother and sister.
Suddenly she paused, the faint tune of the dryer cycle being done could be heard from the laundry room. “I hear it calling to me,” She gently placed down her guitar, rising to her feet. “Blankie!”
She was off like a shot, sliding across the floor as she entered the laundry room. She quickly opened up the dryer door, sweeping up the warm mess that was her blanket. She gave it a fast examination and noticed that the stain was gone. Moving it towards her face, she inhaled the blanket’s scent. Her nose was overcome with the sweet and spicy smell that she had grown so fond of: cinnamon.
It still smells like Renata.
The smile on Minnie’s face grew as she strolled to the back living room, happy that her blanket was okay.

Bugging Out
Summary: An event causes a misunderstanding between Marlon and Sophie.
Read on AO3:
Marlon couldn’t wait for lunch time. He nervously tapped his foot against the classroom floor which some of the other monsters found obnoxious but he didn’t care. He just wanted to get through whatever lecture Mr. Everett was going on about and stretch his legs. That and spend lunchtime with Sophie like he promised. He felt his cheeks heating up at the thought of her. How he had gotten a tall, beautiful harpy to be his girlfriend he had no idea but he enjoyed every day that he got to spend with her. He was excited to see her again at lunchtime. If this stupid clock would move faster, Marlon groaned internally as the seconds dripped by slowly. The words of the lecture all blended together to form an incoherent buzzing sound in the dullahan’s ears. But after a while time seemed to be on his side and the bell rang loudly throughout the hallways, signaling that class was done and that lunch had finally arrived. Marlon rose up from his spot, tossing his books haphazardly into his backpack and was about to walk out to find Sophie when all of the sudden Mr. Everett spoke up.
“Marlon, could you stay back for a few minutes?”
Marlon glanced back at his teacher, a mixture of worry and annoyance bubbling within him. He had a pretty good idea of what he was going to say.
“I just wanted to go over your last history test since it seems like you didn’t do so well,” Mr. Everett slid forward the paper, revealing the poor grade of 43 on it. Marlon felt her heart drop at the sight. His parents were going to be so mad when they saw this. Mr. Everett could see the different emotions battling inside his student's mind. “If you’d like, we can look over it during lunch and with an extra assignment I may be able to raise up your grade.”
Marlon’s eyes shot up and locked with Mr. Everett’s. “Really?” A hopeful smile appeared on the dullahan’s face. “I’d really appreciate that, sir.” This was great. If he got up this grade then his parents wouldn’t be upset with him and make him spend all his free time on the weekends studying. This way he could maybe buy some time before getting a tutor and wouldn’t miss out on any fun dates with Sophie. The realization hit Marlon in an instant; he’d promised to have lunch with Sophie. “Would you mind if I quickly found someone? I promised I’d meet them during lunch and I don’t wanna reschedule with you.”
“Sure, but be back soon,” Mr. Everett took a seat back at his desk and got out some papers to grade and a sandwich to nibble on while he waited. Without another word the dullahan ran off, awkwardly trying to run through the halls without letting his head slide off.
“Sorry, sorry.” Marlon apologized as he bumped into some other monsters. “Shit, sorry!” He called back to a gryphon before sprinting outside. Knowing Sophie she was mostly likely with Minnie, Renata or Violet. Marlon’s eyes scanned the area and quickly picked up on the werewolf who was busy eating her lunch with Prisha, Louis and Clem.
Louis looked up, his eyes brightening when he noticed his best friend, waving excitedly over at the dullahan and patting the empty spot next to him. “Marlon, got a seat for ya!” Louis smiled over at his friend.
“Sorry, can’t, gotta find Sophie.” Marlon waved back, flashing an apologetic smile before sprinting off. He continued to look around the campus until he decided that maybe his girlfriend was hanging out by the woods nearby. Sprinting forward, he slowly began to make out the shape of Ericson’s most mischievous huldra who seemed to be chanting something and pumping her fist while Sophie had her head lodged in a tree. It seemed bizarre but then again nothing was normal here at Ericson High. He just needed to drop by and tell Sophie he couldn’t have lunch with her.
“Sophie!” Marlon cupped his hands over his mouth to get his girlfriend’s attention. The harpy’s feathers twitched as she popped her head out of the tree, turning around and revealing a mouth full of bugs. Sophie tried to say something but nearly choked on the bugs in her mouth. Renata chuckled while whacking her best friend on the back. A flurry of bugs flew from Sophie’s mouth and landed on the ground, scurrying away to safety.
Marlon looked shocked for a moment. He didn’t think harpies could fit that many bugs in their mouths. In fact, he’d never seen Sophie go bug hunting until now. Before he said anything, he glanced down at his watch and swore frantically. It was already cutting deep into his time to look over the test with Mr. Everett. He was getting so anxious about it, his head started to slide off again. “Fuck, shit.” Marlon stumbled around, trying to snatch his head. Letting out a relieved sigh when he caught it, the dullahan gently placed it back over the ghastly vapors whispering from his body. “I can’t have lunch with you today!” Marlon yelled before sprinting off.
It wasn’t until he was back inside the building that he realized how that had sounded. It had probably come across more harsh than he had intended, especially since he had totally blanked on telling Sophie the reason why. He couldn’t go back and fix it now though. He’d have to wait until he ran into her again and explain that he was just meeting with a teacher. With that thought in mind, Marlon walked briskly through the hallways back to the classroom where Mr. Everett was waiting.
-----
Sophie felt her heart drop while she watched her boyfriend sprint off. Probably to get as far away from her as he could after he saw that. He was definitely grossed out after seeing all those bugs in her mouth. “Shit,” Sophie coughed sharply, causing a final bug to shoot out of her mouth. “I’m so stupid. Why did I agree to a bug eating contest?” A small, sad tweet escaped the harpy’s lips.
“Don’t worry, Soph,” Renata placed a hand on her friend’s arm, a confident smile on her face. “I’ll allow a redo. So the hefty sum of zero bugs won’t be your final score.”
“That’s not what I’m worried about.” Sophie replied with a pout. Slowly she flew up and embedded her claws into one of the tree’s branches. Allowing her body to swing upside down, she used her arms to hide her face, hoping that the feathers would mask her emotions.
“Sophie,” the huldra poked her friend’s feathers. “Are you upset that Marlon caught you snacking on bugs?”
“Yes!” Sophie chirped. “He probably thinks I’m some sort of freak! You saw how fast he ran away.”
Renata tilted her head. “Well, I mean his head falls off so he’s weirder than you. Besides, bugs are tasty! So I don’t think it’s a big deal!”
Sophie peeked her head out from behind her feathers and looked at the bright smile of the huldra. “It’s not a big deal for you because you’re dating someone who eats bugs too!” Sophie twittered sadly. Letting her talons release her grip, she landed on the ground. “I’m not hungry anymore. I’m gonna just get ready for P.E.” Sophie didn’t bother to wait for Renata to say anything. Instead she flew off towards the school.
-----
“Are you still sad about yesterday?” Minnie glanced over at Sophie who scratched her talons across the ground as they walked to school.
“Yes,” Sophie mumbled “I’m allowed to be.”
“That’s true.” Renata added, her teeth poking out slightly. “But it’s more fun to focus on the positives.” The huldra’s hand that held Minnie’s swung back and forth happily. “Like this!” The huldra held up a large container. “Omar helped me make lunch for the three of us!”
Sophie glanced over, an excitement dancing in her eyes when she noticed the fried worm sandwich in the container. But it quickly faded away.
“It looks amazing,” Minnie smiled over at her girlfriend who beamed at the praise, her tail curling around her leg.
“Thank you! I do have some hidden cooking talents of my own!” The huldra declared proudly before pausing. Her eyes grew large for a second. “Oh! I forgot I promised to meet up with someone before class. I’ll see you in fourth period.” Renata got up on her tiptoes and gave Minnie a quick kiss on her cheek, giving her hand one final squeeze before sprinting off.
A happy crow escaped Minnie’s lips, her feathers standing up from the sheer electricity of the romantic gesture. “I can’t wait for fourth period!” She smiled over at her twin who still seemed down in the dumps. “Come on, Soph,” Minnie grabbed her sister’s hand and pulled her inside. She could tell this was going to be a long day.
----
“Who would want to date a big bird?” Sophie faceplanted on the picnic table. A sad chirp emitted from her flat face.
“Well, first off the correct term is ‘harpies’,” Renata placed down the container filled with lunch on the table in front of her, pulling out a rabbit panini and taking a large bite from it. “And I like dating a harpy.” Renata looked up, a warm smile on her face when she noticed Minnie walking over. “It’s the best.”
“Hey,” Minnie slid into the spot next to her girlfriend, grabbing a fried worm sandwich. “I’m so hungry.” She took a bite out of it and let out a happy tweet. “Holy shit! Omar can fucking cook! Gotta get this recipe from him.”
“I made some cookies for dessert too.” Renata did a drumroll before revealing a small bag full of cookies.
Sophie lifted up her head, her stomach growling at all the great food in front of her. “ Can you pass me a sandwich?”
Sure!” Renata tossed over a fried worm sandwich which Sophie caught in her mouth, munching on it with a content smile. She still felt down but she wasn’t going to let that ruin lunch. Happy chirps and excited twitters emitted from Sophie while she devoured the entirety of her sandwich within seconds.
All of a sudden Marlon sat down across from her. The air around the table instantly changed. Sophie felt her mind spin with doubts and was about to get up to leave when Marlon spoke up.
“Sophie, wait!”
The harpy paused and looked over at Marlon wondering what he was possible going to say or do. Slowly and without a word, the dullahan opened up a bag of gummy worms and shoved a bunch in his mouth. After a few seconds of chewing he swallowed the gummy worms with a smile. “Slimy yet satisfying.”
Sophie could tell that Marlon was trying to show he didn’t mind that she ate bugs. She immediately perked up at the thoughtful gesture.
“I’m sorry, Soph. I was meeting with Mr. Everett and I totally gave you the wrong impression. I wasn’t freaked out or anything by you eating all those bugs.”
“Really?” Sophie smiled over at her boyfriend.
“Really?” Renata’s voice caused the others to look over at Renata who had a mischievous smirk on her face. Her tail curled into a question mark. “Why don’t you put your money where your mouth is!” The huldra’s hand rummaged through the lunch bag and revealed another fried worm sandwich. She tossed it in front of the dullahan. “Eating gummies is easy but why not try worms!”
“There was another sandwich!” Sophie’s eyes grew large. “Wait, Marlon, you don’t have to eat that.”
“No, it’s fine.” He took a half of the sandwich and with a deep breath took an enormous bite of it, hoping that it would prove how serious and heartfelt his words were. A loud crunching sound emitted from the sandwich as the dullahan took his time munching down on the bite in his mouth. A contemplative expression appeared on his face while he swallowed. “Hey, these aren’t half bad. But you’d probably enjoy it more than me.” Marlon handed over the remainder of his sandwich to Sophie who gave an excited crow in response.
Lunch continued on with happy and light conversations until the school bell rang. Sophie hopped down from her perch, flying over and landing beside Marlon and taking his hand. “Thanks for being cool about everything.” The harpy placed a gentle kiss on his cheek. The dullahan looked shocked for a second until his vision was thrown off by his head slipping backwards. Luckily Sophie was able to catch it in time. The couple looked at each other and laughed.
“It was nothing. I’m just glad I cleared up that misunderstanding.” Marlon’s hand swayed in time with Sophie’s. “So, ready for English?”
“Yep! Lead the way!” Sophie and Marlon walked together, talking about what Ms. Sarita would teach today. Both of them smiled and talked animatedly, happy to be spending some time together and glad to have the silly misunderstanding cleared up.

Last Minute Date
Summary: Minnie panics as she tries to get ready for a last minute date.
Read on AO3:
Minnie could feel the stiffness in her neck. With a small yawn she slung her guitar case over her shoulder. Her gig at Ericson’s Diner was finished which meant she could just go back and fall back into her bed and let all the stresses of the day melt away. Minnie pushed open the front door of the diner and stretched out her arms when all of a sudden the sound of something sliding across the pavement drew the redhead’s attention.
There roller skating through the parking lot was Renata, humming happily when suddenly she looked over at Minnie. Her eyes instantly brightened up. Without warning Renata started to skate faster, her skates zooming across the pavement with ease while she pulled something out of her pocket. Not stopping for a second, Renata rolled by, tossing a note towards her girlfriend. A playful smile was on her face as she gave a flirtatious wink.
Minnie took a step back in shock, her hands fumbling around to catch the note. When she had successfully unfolded it she saw the words Your place, dinner, 8 PM written in Renata’s pretty handwriting. A smile pulled on the corners of the redhead’s lips when a thought entered her mind.“Wait! Renata! Am I cooking dinner?” Minnie called out to her girlfriend but she was already too far away, hopping slightly to help her turn a corner with a happy giggle. Minnie shook her head good-naturedly.
Life was never boring with Renata. I’m not the best at cooking, Minnie stared at the spot where Renata had disappeared. But maybe if I have enough time I could make something good. Minnie glanced down at her phone, a small pit of anxiety forming in her stomach. It was already a quarter to seven. Was there even anything in the fridge that she could use for dinner? What the hell was she going to cook?
“Hey, Minnie!” Sophie’s voice appeared behind Minnie, causing her to nearly jump.
“Shit. Oh, it’s just you Sophie,” Minnie held a hand to her chest.
“Yeah, it’s just me. Sorry,” Sophie fidgeted with her hat, an apologetic smile on her face. “Didn’t mean to scare you.”
“What are you doing? Doesn’t your shift end at eight?” Minnie glanced over at Sophie who swung her arms to stretch and bring some life to them.
“Not on Fridays. My shift ends around six thirty. Snuck into the kitchen and Omar was kind enough to spare a burger,” Sophie rubbed her belly, a serene smile on her face at the memory of the burger she had eaten only minutes ago. “So I’m set for dinner. Since Mom and Dad are away for the next couple days and Tenn’s having a sleepover with Willy and AJ at Clem’s house, I guess that leaves you to find dinner for yourself.” Sophie gave a sympathetic pat to her twin’s back.
“Oh fuck! Dinner,” Minnie let out a sad groan. She had been so distracted by her sister’s sudden presence that the last minute dinner date with Renata had slipped her mind.
“What’s wrong?” Sophie leaned forward and caught the worry in her sister’s eyes.
“It’s just,” Minnie sighed, “Renata threw this at me,” She held the piece of paper in between two of her fingers.
Sophie snatched it and quickly read it then glanced down at her watch. “If we take your car, we can grab a few quick ingredients at the store and still be able to make dinner.” Sophie jogged over to the bike rack and picked her bike up, lifting it up and toting it over towards the car. Minnie ran over and opened the car, placing her guitar gently in the backseat before opening the back of the car for Sophie to chuck her bike in. Sophie slammed the back of the car shut and jumped into the shotgun seat, slamming on her seatbelt. “Alright, to the store!” Sophie pointed forward with a big smile. Minnie nodded and put the key in the ignition, turning it and bringing her car to life.
Luckily the store wasn’t too far from the diner and soon the twins were pushing along a shopping cart that had a squeaky wheel. “So, what are you confident about cooking?” Sophie’s eyes wandered the many aisles of the store.
“Shit, ummm...” Minnie’s mind wandered; she didn’t want to halfass dinner, but she also knew that she couldn't cook something special with the limited time. “How about… spaghetti?”
“Sounds good. First let’s move towards aisle five. It has the pasta.” Sophie swerved the cart and directed the way towards the spaghetti noodles. Once they had grabbed those they moved to grab some sauce, parmesan cheese, garlic, onions and ground beef. When all the essentials were gathered the twins moved towards the checkout.
“Wait,” Sophie let go off the cart and darted towards a stand, sliding to a stop and snatching up the last of the garlic bread. Jogging over she threw it into the cart. “Alrighty! All set?”
Minnie’s eyes looked at the cart then back at the different aisles. “I’m gonna grab a few drinks.” She ran over towards aisle seven and stopped by the brand of Jamaica soda that she knew Renata loved. Grabbing a container of six she ran back to the cart. They didn’t have much more time. As soon as she got back they moved to the express lane and checked out within minutes. Sophie grabbed all the bags while Minnie carefully carried the container of drinks. Her hand rummaged for the key. After hearing the soft beeping sound of her car unlocking and getting safely into the car they were off.
“I’ll get the water for the pasta going,” Sophie disappeared into the kitchen with the groceries. The sisters worked well together, getting the kitchen set in minutes. Soon the pasta was thrown into the boiling water and the meat was cooking. It seemed like everything would work. Sophie felt her phone buzz against her pocket. She looked to see that it was Marlon and in one fluid movement answered it and walked out of the kitchen.
“Hey, babe,” Sophie’s tone sounded even happier than usual whenever she talked with Marlon. She paced back and forth, her hand playing with a strand of hair as she listened to her boyfriend talk. “Yeah, I’m free tomorrow.” Her smile grew as the conversation continued. “Sure, laser tag sounds fun. We’re totally gonna kick Mitch and Brody’s asses! They’d better watch out!” A confident smirk appeared on the redhead’ lips. All of a sudden she heard Minnie swearing frantically in the kitchen. “Gotta go, babe, love you.”
Sophie hung up and shoved her phone in her back pocket, dashing over to the kitchen. Her eyes grew large as she saw the water for the pasta boiling over and splashing against the stove. The flames crackled each time the water hit. But Minnie’s attention was drawn elsewhere - to the pan that held the sauce and meat which was fuming with burnt pieces of meat. A thin grey trail of smoke travelled up to the overhead fans that were trying their best to dispel it. “Minnie, what-” Sophie asked, noticing the panic in her twin’s eyes.
“I don’t know! I just… something went wrong!!” Minnie glanced over towards Sophie before turning off the burners on the stove, putting on oven mitts and draining the pasta water.
“Yeah,” Sophie waved the air in front of her face. “That much is clear.” She saw Minnie’s face fall at those words. “But I’m sure it’s still tasty. In fact,” Sophie opened a cupboard and pulled out a small plate, piling on a hearty serving of the spaghetti. Twirling her fork in the meal, she pulled up a large forkful of spaghetti and shoved it in her mouth.
Sophie’s bright optimistic smile faltered as soon as she bit down on the food. The noodles were beyond mushy, tasting almost like paste while the sauce had a strong burnt taste to it. The cindered meat bits within the sauce only worsened the taste. Her face turned somewhat sour as she swallowed the bite before returning to its usual chill state. “Wow,” Sophie covered her mouth with her hand. “So good,” She lied through her teeth. “I’m gonna go finish this in the bathroom.” Sophie held up the plate and didn’t wait for Minnie’s response before disappearing down the hall.
“Fuck,” Minnie placed her hands on the kitchen counter and glared at the food she had just massacred. There was no way in hell she could serve this to Renata. But what was she going to do? How much time did she have? Minnie’s eyes wandered over to the clock that hung over the dining room table. Her eyes widened in horror as she watched the big clock hand land on the twelve as the small hand stood on the eight. It was too late. Any minute now Renata would be skipping towards the front door, excited for a dinner date. Only to be surprised with a shitty, inedible dinner.
Minnie wondered if she could quickly fry up something else when the doorbell rang, causing her heart to fall to her feet. She saw out of one of the front windows that Renata was at the front door, excitedly bouncing on the balls of her feet. She had a cute bright yellow top on, a pink flower tucked behind her ear and jeans that seemed to add to her attractiveness. Minnie glanced down at her white t-shirt and ripped jeans. The thought of dressing up for the date hadn’t even crossed her mind. Fuck, she was going to give Renata a bad date… maybe even food poisoning with how fast Sophie had ran off after eating her food. Minnie opened the door with a forced smile, trying to push down the nerves in her body.
“Hey, Ren.”
“Minnie!” Renata got up on her tiptoes and captured the redhead’s lips in a short kiss that sent a jolt of electricity through Minnie’s body. When they pulled apart, Renata had a playful smile on her face. “Ready for the date?”
“Yeah,” Minnie answered, her mind in a bit of a haze as she moved back to let Renata in. It wasn’t until her girlfriend was on her way towards the kitchen that Minnie snapped out of her haze. “Shit. Wait,” Minnie ran after Renata who smelled the air with curiosity.
“Hmm, were you cooking something, Min? It smells interesting,” Renata flashed a smile back at her girlfriend.
“Don’t eat it,” Minnie ran forward, covering her failure of spaghetti from her girlfriend. But hiding it away only made Renata seem more interested in it.
“Why not?”
“It’s bad. Like really bad.”
“Oh, come on,” Renata sneaked past her girlfriend and snagged up some spaghetti on one of the plates that was set out. “It can’t be that bad,” Renata bit down with a “num” sound only to immediately spit it out with a long bleh.
“I knew it. I was just trying to make dinner and I totally fucked up.”
“Well it wasn’t good, but we can just make dinner together,” Renata smiled up at Minnie. “That was the original plan anyway.”
“Wait? It was? That wasn’t clear in your note.” Minnie looked over at Renata who had her head in the fridge.
“Well,” Renata popped her head out from behind the fridge door. “We can still salvage dinner. So how about it?”
“Yeah,” Minnie smiled and moved over to the fridge. She stopped behind Renata and leaned forward to grab some ingredients. “There should still be stuff left to try to make spaghetti again.” Her mouth hovered by Renata’s ear, tickling it with her warm breath and causing a shiver to run down Renata’s spine.
“Hee, that tickles,” Renata’s giggle made Minnie move back, a light blush on her face.
“Sorry,”
“No, I liked it,” Renata grabbed Minnie’s hand and pulled her towards the stove. “Now let’s get to cooking!” Soon the couple had chosen the different tasks to complete. Minnie was in charge of the sauce while Renata kept a close eye on the noodles.
Renata hummed happily to herself, her hips swaying gently back and forth as she navigated the kitchen. Minnie felt her face heating up, becoming overwhelmed by her girlfriend’s presence. She decided to put her focus on making sure she didn’t mess up on the sauce again when she heard her girlfriend’s cheery voice.
“Minnie, can you taste if this is done?”
“Sure,” Minnie didn’t look away from the sauce and moved her head over towards where Renata stood. Her mouth grabbed the noodle and absentmindedly nibbled on it when all of a sudden she felt the warmth on Renata’s lips on hers. Minnie pulled back, nearly choking on the food in her mouth as she felt her heartbeat skyrocket.
----
Renata watched in playful amusement at her girlfriend’s flustered reaction. She always loved seeing how flustered Minnie could get. How red her face would be whenever Renata did the simplest teasing or flirting. Her eyes looked over at Minnie’s outfit. It was a simple look, yet somehow she made a plain t-shirt look like the hottest thing ever. Renata pulled herself away from her thought and glanced over at the stove. “Well, it seems like the pasta is done!” she declared before straining the pasta water from the pot.
Minnie quickly moved to turn off the heat on the sauce and after a few minutes of setting the table they were ready for dinner. As soon as she sat down Renata grabbed the container of Parmesan cheese, shaking it wildly and piling it up high on her plate.
“You sure do love parmesan cheese,” Minnie’s voice drew Renata’s attention, who smiled at her girlfriend.
“It’s what makes the spaghetti so good.” Renata then proceeded to twirl around the noodles on her fork and devour the food. The two continue to talk and eat as they enjoyed their meal when Minnie’s eyes grew large as she dropped her fork.
“I also forgot about the garlic bread!”
“There’s garlic bread?” Renata looked up with excitement. “Well, it’s never too late to throw it in.” She hopped up from her spot and was soon followed by Minnie who helped prepare the garlic bread for the oven. The two talked here and there, sharing small kisses in between the minutes while they waited for the bread to be done. As soon as the timer dinged Renata ran over and pulled out the garlic bread, completing the meal.
After a few minutes dinner was done and Renata got up, stretching her arms as she rose. “Well, I’d say we make a pretty good team. That spaghetti was tasty.”
“Yeah,” Minnie got up and started clearing the spots. “Way better than my first attempt.”
True,” Renata slid over to help carry over the dishes.
“You wash and I dry?” Renata looked back at her girlfriend with a smile.
“Oh, I can just do them myself,” Minnie scratched the back of her head with a smile.
Renata looked like she was considering the offer but Minnie already knew that she wouldn’t budge.
“Nah, come on,” Renata grabbed Minnie’s hands and guided her over to the sink. Minnie laughed while she was pulled along, a warm smile on her face. The two worked hard to get all the dishes done and within minutes they were finished.
“So,” Minnie dried her hands on a towel. “Would you like to stay for a movie?” Renata could see the nervous hope in her girlfriend’s eyes.
“I’d love to. In fact, I’ll get the popcorn started.” Renata skipped over to one of the cabinets.
“Alright, I’ll go get the back living room set up,” Minnie disappeared out of the kitchen and dashed to the back living room. It looked a bit worse for wear. Sophie wasn’t exactly the tidiest person and her influence seemed to reach the back living room. Minnie ran around grabbing trash and other random junk, kicking aside a spare bra into one of the bedrooms as she balanced the pile of trash. By time she finished cleaning up the living room and making sure her blanket that she got from Renata was back there, she heard the sound of the microwave beeping.
Within seconds Renata was sliding across the hardwood floor with a bowl of popcorn and the sixpack of Jamaica sodas. Minnie moved forward and helped carry the snack load. “Snacks are set. Saw that you had some of these bad boys,” Renata dangled the Jamaica sodas in her hand with an excited smile.
“Yeah, I picked some up just for you.”
“You’re the best,” Renata gave Minnie a quick kiss which Minnie leaned into, deepening it. Renata could feel her heart swell as the kiss turned into a longer one. The two were getting so caught up in the kiss they failed to notice their surroundings, causing Minnie to spill some of the popcorn on the floor when she backstepped too quickly. Minnie and Renata pulled away as the redhead struggled to balance the bowl in her hand.
“Oh shit,” Minnie cursed before regaining her balance.
“Five second rule,” Renata scooped up the few kernels that fell and tossed them in her mouth. “Now, what movie do you wanna watch?”
“Hmmm,” Minnie placed down the bowl in front of the spot she made for them on the couch. “I don’t know.”
“Well, got anything in your DVD player?” Renata set down the drink case and opened one, taking a large swig from it. Minnie turned on the player, pushing the eject button that revealed the hidden disc.
“Bambi.”
“Sounds good to me. Grab the remote and join me on the couch.” Renata jumped onto the couch with a happy sound. Minnie grabbed the remote and sat down on the spot that Renata was patting. As soon as Minnie sat down Renata moved closer, sitting in Minnie’s lap. Minnie seemed overwhelmed for a second but soon wrapped her arms around Renata and shifted to make sure that both of them were comfy. Minnie could smell the warm, comforting smell of cinnamon that made her heart fill with warmth. Renata moved away for a second, snatching the blanket that was on top of the couch and tossing it over them before returning to the warmth of Minnie’s embrace. There was no place quite as comfy as Minnie’s arms. Renata let out a happy sigh when her eyes wandered over to the remote that was out of both of their reaches.
“Min?”
“Hmm?”
“How are we gonna get the remote?”
Minnie looked over at the remote and was about to suggest that she just grab it before returning back to their comfortable spot when a loud belch emitted from the kitchen.
“Oh, banana.” Sophie groaned. “That tasted so nasty.”
“Sophie!” Renata’s cheery voice made Sophie poke her head out of the kitchen.
“Oh? Hi, Renata.” Sophie walked over and stood by the doorway that led into the living room. “Staying for a movie?” Sophie motioned to the TV that had the title screen to Bambi.
Yep! Wanna join us?” Renata looked up at Minnie who nodded in agreement.
“Sure,” Sophie had a chill smile on her face until she burped again, her face twisting in disgust at the taste.
“There’s a price though,” Renata had a mischievous smile on her face that made her best friend stop in her tracks. “Grab the remote and press play.”
“Sure,” Sophie picked up the remote and tapped the play button before falling down onto the other couch. The three watched in silence for the first part of the movie, enjoying all that it had to offer. Then Renata spoke up.
“I want popcorn.”
“Ok, I’ll get it,” Minnie moved forward and was about to unwrap her arms around Renata.
“No, wait,” Renata whispered. “Sophie, grab the popcorn and toss it at our faces.”
“Okay,” Sophie shrugged.
“You don’t have to-” Minnie stopped when a piece of popcorn ricocheted off her forehead and landed by Renata’s shoulder.
“Sorry, just gotta aim better,” Sophie held the next piece like she was preparing to shoot a basket and sent the popcorn flying and landing in Renata’s mouth. The two cheered happily and soon the three of them made a game of it. Some pieces landed easily while others were way off but it didn’t seem to take away from the enjoyment the trio was having.
Soon the popcorn was devoured and they had settled down, their attention back on the screen. Sophie began to doodle something on a spare piece of paper, caught up in it until she finished. When she looked over back at her sister and Renata she noticed that they had fallen asleep. Renata’s head was resting peacefully on Minnie’s collarbone, gently rising and failing with her girlfriend’s breathing. Minnie’s head rested on top of Renata’s, a happy smile on her face while they slept.
Sophie quietly grabbed another scrap of paper, careful not to wake up the sleeping couple. Sophie’s pencil scratched against the surface of the paper and after a while the small sketch of Minnie and Renata was complete. She knew both of them would love it. Sophie put the drawing by her side and returned to watching the movie as she tucked her hands behind her head. It seemed like the last minute date had turned out well after all.

A Day Away From the Sea
Summary: The Ericson Pirates finally reach a port town again giving them a break from the open seas.
Read on A03:
It had been weeks since their last stop at a port town, so as soon as the ship was docked most of the crew was already making their way into town. Prisha had grabbed Violet’s hand, whispering something about how it was finally nice to be on land again before disappearing into the marketplace. Ruby and Aasim offered to do the supply run for the day and after double checking to make sure they had everything they needed along with enough money they headed out.
“We can stay with ship.” Clementine offered, gesturing to her and Louis, her eyes looking at the remaining crew. It was clear that everyone wanted - no - needed a break from the ship.
“You sure?” Marlon looked over his shoulder as he tried to slow down the boys who were already pulling on his arms, begging for him to hurry up.
“Yeah. You guys should go into town and have some fun.” Louis smiled at Clementine. She returned his smile.
“Alright.” Omar mumbled, reluctantly getting pushed by Willy and AJ. “We’ll see you later then.”
Mitch looked over and paused when he saw that Brody hadn’t moved yet. “Hey, Brody! You wanna go into town with us? It’s gonna be a kickass time!”
“No, I’m okay. I’m just going to stay behind on the ship.” She replied before going back to her book.
“Alright, suit yourself! Let’s go, guys!” Mitch exclaimed as the group scrambled off the ship together, pulling Omar along with them.
Brody let out a sigh as she kept reading until the sound of giggles coming from the crow’s nest drew her attention. Her eyes widened in shock. How did they get up there so fast? As the giggles continued Brody decided that it would be better if she wasn’t there. Quickly slamming her book closed, she sprinted after the boys. “Hey guys, wait up!”
Prisha and Violet walked into the town square side by side while they talked about this and that. Violet looked at Prisha’s smile as she talked; it was really great to be back on land together. The ship was nice and all, but after being stuck on it for a couple weeks it felt amazing to just spend time alone with her, walking down a street side by side without a care in the world.
“So I figured the best way we can improve-” Prisha suddenly stopped mid-sentence as she looked at a nearby stand. “I’ll be right back.” she whispered before running forward towards a small stand.
Violet looked on with confusion as she watched her talk with the seller before returning back. Her hand was hidden behind her back. “So what did you get?”
“Well, I saw this flower,” Prisha’s hand came from behind her back, revealing a small light blue flower. “And I wanted to get it for you.” Prisha’s hand brushed back Violet’s hair, gently placing the flower by her ear. Violet felt her face grow warm when she looked at Prisha who smiled at her with such a loving gaze. Violet’s hand reached up to touch the flower in her hair.
“Thank you.”
“Do you like it?”
“Yeah. I really do.” A warm light seemed to dance in Violet’s eyes. The two smiled at each other before Violet reached out, her hand intertwining with Prisha’s. The couple continued their stroll through the market square. When they had reached the center of the square, Violet noticed another flower stall. This one had a multitude of different flowers. She glanced over at Prisha who had gotten distracted by another stall that seemed to be selling different trinkets that shone in the sunlight. This is my chance. Violet silently made her way over to the flower stall, returning after a couple minutes to Prisha with arms full of flowers.
Prisha looked shocked when she turned around to see Violet standing with all the flowers.
“Your hair would look beautiful with flowers too. So… I thought maybe I could help you put them in your braid.” Violet awkwardly rubbed the side of her arm, causing a few petals to fall off from the array of flowers in her arms.
“I would love that.” Prisha said with a warm smile.
The two searched around the area for a few minutes before finding a place to sit down. Violet slowly began to place the flowers in Prisha’s braid, cursing silently here and there whenever her fingers slipped up. After a few minutes it was done.
Prisha stood up to display her flower-adorned braid, spinning around slowly on her feet as her braid swayed behind her. “So, how is it?” She stopped to show off her braid.
“It’s beautiful.” Violet whispered with a shy smile on her face.
Prisha’s eyes lit up at her girlfriend’s compliment when the sound of music drew her attention. Around the center of the square, people had begun to gather, their feet kicking around as a dance started to the tune of lively music.
“Come on,” Prisha leaned over and grabbed Violet’s hand. Violet seemed a bit unsure at first but when she saw how excited Prisha was, she couldn’t help but feel the same.
----
“Alright, so we should get some more thread.” Aasim instructed, his attention focused on the list in his hand.
“I bet there’s some in that shop,” Ruby pointed towards a small store.
“We should head there first then.” Aasim placed away the list while he walked with Ruby, their hands interlocked.
Ruby looked at him and smiled. “It’s really nice to be spending some time together in town.”
“Yeah, it's always nice to see a new port town. We should go for a walk tomorrow and see all that it has to offer.” His eyes were pulled away from Ruby when he noticed something. “Oh! We need more of those too. I’ll be right back, my treasure.” He leaned forward, kissing her cheek before sprinting off. Aasim shortly returned, quickly intertwining his fingers with Ruby’s before entering the shop.
It took a few hours to get all the supplies that they needed. After spending a few weeks on the ship it was no surprise that they needed to resupply, especially with this crew. They always seemed to be getting into trouble even when they had the most well-meant intentions. Ruby and Aasim didn’t seem to mind the long shopping trip though as they slowly made from location to location. They appreciated every second that they got to spend together, simply enjoying each other's company. The sky quickly changed from blue to orange as they wrapped up at the last shop.
“Well, it’s getting a bit late but how about we grab a bite to eat first?” Ruby smiled warmly at Aasim.
“Sure, I saw this place that looks like it would be delicious.” Aasim answered as he guided her through the streets. Soon they had made their way to the tavern. As they sat down to eat they were greeted by a server who quickly brought them their meal. The two laughed and smiled as they talked. Each had split up their meal, giving it to the other to try. Everything was delicious.
Thanking the server for their meal, they exited the tavern and made their way back to the ship. Before they got on board, Ruby stopped, causing Aasim to pause as well. They looked at each other, staring into the other’s eyes before Ruby got up on her tiptoes and captured Aasim’s lips in a gentle, warm kiss. Aasim’s hands went to cup Ruby’s face as the kiss deepened before they pulled away.
“Alright, we should probably head back now.” Ruby had a light blush on her face as she looked up at him.
Aasim’s face was rather red as well, a kind smile appearing on his lips. “Let’s,” His hand grasped Ruby’s, their fingers intertwining once again as the two continued to walk towards Ol’ Kickass.
----
“I got you, Louis.” Clementine grunted, grasping onto Louis’ pants as she helped him up to the crow’s nest.
Louis let out a deep breath, groaning when his butt hit the crow’s nest before he shuffled to sit beside her. “Thanks.”
The two smiled at each other, a giddy euphoria taking over their stomachs when they realized they had the whole day to themselves. They had barely waited for the others to leave before climbing up here. It seemed that the fact that they were alone was so exhilarating that they’d begun to giggle as soon as they climbed towards the crow’s nest. Louis loved his crew, but it was so hard to find some alone time without someone interrupting them. Whenever the two of them had a moment alone, Willy would show up begging for help in getting Garbage down from somewhere or Aasim would ask if he could get their opinion on the ship’s next destination.
Clementine looked out towards the town, leaning her head against his shoulder, humming softly at his warmth. Louis glanced at her and smiled before placing a soft kiss on her forehead.
“It’s such a nice day.” Clementine commented, looking at the sky.
“Yeah, it really is. It’s always cool to see a new place too. We should go to town tomorrow and explore!” His eyes danced with excitement, looking over at his girlfriend with a happy grin.
Clementine looked up at him, her eyes getting lost in his freckled face before placing a gentle kiss on his cheek. “That sounds great.”
Louis felt his cheeks get warm, his voice disappearing in his euphoria. He cleared his throat in hopes it would help him speak.“So where would you like to go?”
Clementine thought for a minute before responding. “The marketplace would be fun. It’s always exciting to see what they have to offer.”
“Then it’s settled. Tomorrow will be our marketplace adventure!”
Suddenly Clementine sat up and leaned forward, her face becoming serious.
“What’s wrong?” Louis leaned forward as well, a look of concern on his face.
“Someone just got on our ship. It looks like they’re trying to steal it.”
“What?!?”
“But they won’t succeed.” A confident smile played on Clementine’s lips. Without another word Clementine grabbed a nearby rope, swinging down. Her body spun around before she jumped off and landed near the thief. Unsheathing her rapier, Clementine lunged forward, her blade trapping the thief’s dagger and disarming him. His dagger fell into the sea with a soft thunk. The thief looked over at Clementine with a sheepish smile. Clementine returned a smile mockingly before shooting her leg out and kicking him overboard.
“That was so badass, Clem!” Louis shouted from atop the crow’s nest. A proud smile played on his lips.
“Just give me a minute and I’ll be back up there.” She shouted back to him with a smile, climbing up the mast and landing beside him once again. As soon as she was back in the crow’s nest, Clementine snuggled next to him and the couple continued to talk about their plans for the next day. Even though hours had passed by, to the two it only seemed like minutes before the rest of the crew began to return.
Everyone seemed to have a good time in town. Willy and AJ told their adventure with the boys and Brody. Tenn quietly threw in a word or two as the story was told, fixing the errors that AJ said and the exaggerated tales that Willy spun. As the night went on, the crew’s energy slowly started to die down. Each of them lazily moved along to head to bed, happy that they’d had a great day away from the sea.

Pottermore Shenanigans
Summary: The whole gang at Ericson's Diner decide to take the Pottermore tests and figure out their houses and more!
Read on A03:
“Hey, guys,” Prisha popped her head into the main office, checking on Louis and Clementine. “Just wanted to let you know that the deep clean on the bar is almost done,” Her eyebrows quirked as she looked at the computer screen they were both staring at. “Wait a minute, that doesn’t look like budget reports,”
“Haha, guilty,” Louis admitted, scratching the back of his head. “We were taking a break by finding out what house Clementine is on Pottermore,”
“Ooh, color me intrigued. Do you have your results already, Louis?”
“Well, I tried a while back and got sorted into Slytherin,”
“That’s surprising. You don’t seem like the type,”
“I think he’s a Ravenclaw,” Clementine said, leaning back in her chair. “Marches to the beat of his own drum, always wanting to learn new things, endlessly creative…”
“Aaw, thanks, babe,” Louis grinned, placing his elbows on the back of her chair. “Sounds good to me!”
Prisha leaned against the doorframe. “Your results in yet, Clem?”
“Almost. Just gotta click here for my results and… I’m a Gryffindor,”
“As expected,” Prisha noted.
“Yeah,” Louis grinned, “I think all of us saw that one coming,”
“Which house are you, Prisha?” Clem asked, looking up from the computer.
“Definitely Ravenclaw. Now that I think of it though, I never took the official Pottermore test,”
“Might as well do it now,” Clementine stood up from the chair, motioning for Prisha to take a seat. Prisha acquiesced, logging out of Clementine’s account and setting up her own.
As she began to answer the Sorting Hat questions, Violet came into the room holding a broom. “All the cobwebs on all the ceilings have been destroyed. Cleaning’s pretty much done,” She glanced at the computer screen. “Pottermore?”
“Prisha’s never taken the official test,” Clementine explained.
“Done!” Prisha said with a smile.
Louis whistled. “That was fast!”
“What can I say? I know myself well. And the results are… Hufflepuff?!” Prisha stared at the screen in disbelief. “This must be some sort of mistake!”
“I’m Hufflepuff,” Violet commented dryly.
“Oh, I didn’t mean anything against Hufflepuff!” Prisha exclaimed, quickly backtracking. “It’s just that I’m clearly not a Hufflepuff. I’ve known I’m a Ravenclaw my whole life!”
“Mhm,” Violet looked unconvinced.
Ruby and Aasim dropped by before Prisha could dig herself a deeper hole. “Kitchen’s done!” Ruby said with a warm smile. “What’s everybody doing in here?”
“Pottermore,” Louis responded. “Though maybe we should move it into the dining room so everybody can spread out. I’ll grab the laptop and meet you guys there,”
The group agreed and headed en masse to sit at one of the booths. Once Louis emerged with the diner’s laptop, they all decided that they should go the whole nine yards and find out everyone’s house, wand and patronus. Some people had already taken the tests. Aasim was a Ravenclaw with a black walnut wand and a ragdoll cat patronus. Violet and Louis had completed the tests together years ago: Violet had a holly wood wand and a husky patronus while Louis’ wand was hornbeam and his patronus was a salmon. As others returned from their cleaning tasks, they each took a turn completing each of the tests, the others crowding around to watch the results unfold and give their own suggestions on how the person should answer.
Some fascinating discoveries unfolded as the tests were completed. Louis and Mitch had the same patronus, a fact neither of them was happy about. Brody and Sophie (who’d dropped by to pick up a check) joined the ranks of cat patronuses with Aasim, and when A.J. got his turn to take the test, his wand was almost exactly identical to Clementine’s: ebony wood with a dragon heartstring core and supple flexibility, the only difference being ½ an inch between them.
Speaking of length, Prisha soon found herself getting overly invested with how long everyone’s wands were when she found that her wand was in the lead at 14 ½ inches. Most of the others didn’t even get close to that, Omar’s being the shortest at 9 and ½ inches while most were in the 11 to 12 inch range. Mitch got close, but fell short by just a quarter of an inch at 14 and ¼ inches.
“Haha, suck it!” Prisha crowed, doing a little victory dance. “How does it feel to know I have the bigger wand, Mitch?”
“Shut up,” Mitch grumbled, rolling his eyes. “It’s not like any of this shit matters,”
“That’s what losers say,” Prisha retorted, sticking out her tongue at him before continuing her dance. She paused when she noticed everyone staring at her. “Something wrong with my dance?”
Violet shook her head. “It’s the way you’re talking about wand lengths. It’s almost like - like comparing dick sizes,”
“What? No, that’s not what I’m going for at all! I’m just happy to have the biggest wand. There’s nothing weird about that!”
“It is a little weird,” Brody murmured under her breath.
“You’re just jealous than mine is longer than your boyfriend’s!”
“Ok, that’s enough!” Violet declared. “All wand length talk is now forbidden!”
Prisha was a bit pouty at the new rule, but eventually calmed down as she got sucked into the testing excitement once more with all the others. Ruby was a Hufflepuff to no one’s surprise, and Marlon was a Gryffindor. All in all, they were left with five Hufflepuffs, five Gryffindors (including Minnie’s whose results they looked up online with Sophie’s help. Prisha was relieved to find that Minnie also fell a quarter inch short for longest wand), three Ravenclaws (though Louis and Prisha were self-appointed rather than abiding by their test results), and one lone Slytherin. A.J. seemed happy with his special position. “Snakes are cool!” he’d declared upon getting sorted into Slytherin. Everyone shared a look at the result, but soon calmed. Slytherins got a bad rep, but they were just as awesome as any other house. A.J. was living proof of that.
Eventually everyone had taken the test and it was time to call it a night. They trickled out mostly in pairs, Mitch and Brody giving Willy a ride home while Omar hitched a ride with Marlon. Sophie bid everyone a fond farewell as she and Tenn headed out. Ruby and Aasim went out the back exit after turning off the lights in the kitchen. Eventually it was just Louis, Clementine, Prisha and Violet who remained. They headed though the front door as a group, Louis locking the door behind him after they’d exited.
“Well, that was enlightening,” Prisha commented, the night air forming a mist around her words as she spoke.
Clementine nodded. “Definitely. I think Omar got the coolest patronus. Black mambas are some of the most dangerous snakes in the world,”
“Much scarier than a salmon,” Louis said with a sigh. “Your blackbird’s awesome though, Clem. A+ badassery,”
Clementine grinned, interlocking her fingers with his. “I’m sure you’d find a way to make your salmon fearsome if we were actually in battle,”
Prisha gave a wan smile. “Another way in which we’re the same, Louis. Ravenclaws with awkward patronuses. There’s no way an aardvark patronus would be the star of any sort of action scene,”
“I don’t know,” Violet said with a shrug. “I think aardvarks are pretty cute,”
That drew a smile from Prisha. She reached out, taking her girlfriend’s hand as well.
“Guess that concludes our Pottermore adventures,” Louis announced. “See you guys in the morning!”
With that, both couples headed out, ready to call it a day.

Free the Fish!
Summary: Mitch and Brody go on their second date to the aquarium when Mitch decides to do something big to make Brody smile.
Read on A03:
“I’m so glad we were able to make it work to meet up today,” Brody’s bright voice had Mitch’s stomach doing somersaults within him. He felt utterly captivated by the feeling of her tiny hand in his. He was trying his best to take in everything she was saying as they made their way through the aquarium, but his heart was thumping so hard in his ears at the realization that they were actually on their second date that he sometimes forgot what he’d just heard.
Brody gasped excitedly, pulling Mitch along as she ran toward a cylindrical tank full of seahorses. “Look at all of them! Oh, they’re too precious!” Her eyes practically sparkled as she watched them drift around.
“Were there lots of seahorses where you grew up? In your…” Mitch paused as he realized he had no idea what a group of selkies would be called.
“In my rookery?” Brody shook her head. “The waters were too cold for them in the waters we frequented. I always thought they sounded so pretty though. Sometimes I’d wish we could live near a coral reef so I could witness all the different tropical creatures up close and in person. Then again…” She tugged her seal pelt closer around her shoulders, “I don’t know if that could compare to the peacefulness of the open expanses we swam in. A reef might end up being too busy for me with all the different creatures running around and bumping into each other,”
“Do you still miss it?” Mitch realized it was a stupid question as soon as he asked it, but he couldn’t take it back.
Brody seemed to consider it seriously though. “I mean, part of me will always miss it. It’s where I grew up. But my mom was right that I should learn to live in both worlds: on land as well as in the sea. And now that I’ve made friends here, it’s really become a second home,” The smile on her face at those words made Mitch’s heart melt. He could feel his tail curling against his leg. He hoped it wouldn’t weird her out if it accidentally brushed against her.
“Wanna go see the otters next? We did have those where I grew up. They’re super sweet, though they’re sort of food hogs,”
“Wherever you want to go,”
Brody paused, looking momentarily concerned. “You are having a good time, right? I know the aquarium isn’t exactly the most exciting place to go,”
“Are you kidding? I love it here! Fish, sharks, I love all that shit. And I mean shit in like a positive sense,” Mitch quickly amended, growing flustered.
“I’m glad,” Brody’s hand in his was warm as they continued along the walkway, flanked by enormous aquarium walls on each side.
As they passed a small crowd standing in front of the octopus exhibit, Mitch noticed a mother reflexively pull her child closer to her. It sort of hurt, but at the same time he couldn’t blame her.
Growing up as a minotaur, he’d gotten used to being perceived as a threat. The looks that annoyed him more were the ones he’d seen peers his own age giving him and Brody throughout the day. Brody could almost pass as human if not for the seal pelt round her shoulders, but Mitch could never hope to blend in. His horns and tail were a dead giveaway. Everyone knew that human-monster relationships did exist, but they were extremely rare. Still, what he and Brody were to each other was their own damn business.
I wonder if Brody knows what we are, Mitch mused as he followed her. I mean, we both agreed that the thing at the coffee shop was a date, but what does that make us now? Two dates in is too early to put a label on things, right? In truth, he wouldn’t mind calling Brody his girlfriend, even if it was fast. He’d had a thing for her ever since he’d caught sight of her big blue eyes that day she helped him free his horns from the hallway wall. But he wanted to be considerate of Brody’s feelings too. Calling her his girlfriend too early might scare her off and that would fucking suck.
They’d reached the aquarium with the otters. Brody sat down on one of the provided benches excitedly, scooting over further so Mitch could sit with her. She looked happy as the show started, watching the otters perform all their tricks, diving into the water or high fiving their trainers for treats. As the show continued though, a more serious, pensive look came across her face.
“Is the show boring you?” Mitch asked. “We can leave if you want,” He was enjoying it, but if Brody was uncomfortable, he was more than happy to head out.
“No, it’s not that. It’s just… I guess I feel a sort of connection with these particular otters,”
“How’s that?”
“They ended up here at the aquarium for a variety of reasons, but none of them actually volunteered to live here. They were all placed here by humans who figured they knew what was best for them. Who knows if these otters have spouses or children they were forced to leave out there alone? Sometimes it feels like that’s how I ended up at Ericson High too. I didn’t want to leave the sea, but my dad wanted to start raising me more like a human and my mom agreed it would be a good learning experience. Not that I’m mad I’m here now, but still it would’ve been nice to have a say in the matter,”
Mitch wasn’t sure what to say to that. He’d never exactly been the most eloquent with words and he didn’t want to say something that would end up hurting Brody rather than helping. Instead, he settled for patting her shoulder a few times before his hand came to rest there. He felt too self-conscious to draw it back and Brody seemed to be fine with it, so he let his hand rest there till the show came to an end.
Once it was over, Brody rose to her feet, looking around them. “I think there’s an outdoor section to the aquarium as well. Would you like to visit it?”
“Sounds cool,” Mitch walked alongside Brody, wondering if he should reach for her hand again. It had taken all of his guts to do it the first time. He didn’t know if doing it again would be too much. He was surprised when he felt something warm brush against his hand and realized Brody was reaching for it. He grasped hers eagerly, hoping he hadn’t surprised her too much with his eagerness. When he looked down at her she seemed happy though, almost peaceful. He was glad.
The first exhibit they came across was actually one with birds: a lorikeet forest. They walked through it hand in hand, joking and pointing out preening and flying birds to compare to their harpy friends Minnie and Sophie. There was a station in there which sold some sort of sugar water that the lorikeets liked to drink. It didn’t cost much so Mitch bought two cups. He ended up giving them both to Brody so he could get pictures of all the birds as they flocked to drink from the cups she held. A few birds landed on Mitch’s horns too, prompting Brody to set aside her cups temporarily so she could capture the moment on her phone. Mitch felt a little embarrassed by the whole thing, but it was worth it to see Brody’s smile.
Eventually they found themselves at the open tank exhibits. There were several pools of water raised only a few feet high so that children could look over into the water and observe horseshoe crabs and manta rays swim round. More adventurous youngsters could even run their fingers tentatively across the surface of the creatures’ backs. Brody and Mitch walked amongst the pools, looking into each one.
“These poor guys must be tired,” Brody noted with a sympathetic smile. “I know it would drive me crazy is every five minutes I had hands coming out of nowhere, poking at me while I’m minding my own business,”
Mitch nodded thoughtfully. It was a similar sentiment to the one Brody had shared back at the otter exhibit. Here were more creatures minding their own business when nosy humans had to come along, drag them away from their homes and use them for their own personal amusement. It wasn’t fair. In fact, it fucking sucked. Maybe it was time somebody did something about it.
Looking around, Mitch noticed they were near the sea lion exhibit. Ideally, he’d break them all out since he figured seeing them captive felt like seeing relatives behind bars to Brody. But he knew that would get shut down pretty fast. Security around them was intense. He did notice a few buckets though that had been left out by trainers after the last show. Normally they held snacks for the sea lions, but right now they were empty. Mitch could feel the gears turning in his head as they made their way over to them.
“Well, I think we’ve seen almost everything. Ready to call it a day?” Brody turned to him with an easy smile.
“In just a sec. First, there’s something I have to do,”
“Oh? What’s that?”
“This,” Without another word, Mitch grabbed one of the chum buckets, racing back to the open aquarium pools. He thrust the bucket into the water, scooping up as many horseshoe crabs as he could in one go. “Free the fish!” he yelled, laughing maniacally as he ran toward the exit. He would find these horseshoe crabs a new, better home as soon as he figured out where the fuck their natural habitat was. This was for Brody. He hoped she was watching.
----
“Well, that certainly was something,” Brody said softly as the two of them walked out the aquarium’s front doors.
“I didn’t even get 100 yards before they fucking tackled me,” Mitch groaned, rolling his neck and hearing a series of pops. “At least they caught the bucket before it fell on the pavement,”
“It was a very sweet gesture,” Brody smiled up at him brightly. “A bit crazy, but your heart was in the right place,” Mitch smiled down at her. “I just wanted to see you happy. I knew seeing all those sea creatures in captivity sort of bummed you out. At least I didn’t get you banned for life from the aquarium though,”
“We’ll find other aquariums to go to,” Brody replied, playfully nudging his arm. “You’re picking the location for our next date,”
A goofy grin spread across Mitch’s face. “There’s going to be another date?”
“Of course! What, did you think that getting beat up by aquarium security was going to scare me off?” Brody’s expression softened. “I know I’ve talked a lot today about missing home, but the truth is if my mom came here tomorrow and told me I was leaving, I’d be sad about that too. I’d miss Willy and Ruby and Clem an awful lot… but I think I’d miss you the most of all, Mitch. I could travel through all the world’s oceans and I don’t think I’d ever find anyone quite like you,”
Mitch felt his face heating up at her words. “I think you’re totally awesome, Brody. Like, the best,”
Brody seemed somewhat flustered by his words. “Thanks, Mitch. I-I think you’re the best too,”
As they made their way to the truck to drive back home, Mitch felt a happiness deep inside him that he’d never experienced before.
Brody was special. If he could, he wanted to keep her by his side for a long, long time.

Eyes that Burn The Same
Summary: Sophie decides to agree to some sparring matches when one of them brings up raw memories of the past.
Read on AO3:
Chapter 2
Peeling potatoes is definitely more tiring than I thought it would be, Sophie thought as she stretched her arms above her head. It was nice to spend some time with Omar. He was generally pretty quiet which may annoy some but for Sophie it was relaxing. Spending some time just focusing on a task and clearing her mind was good for her.
She definitely had enough to think about lately. Her mind was still trying to process all that the street rats had told her and the fact that without even realizing it she had lost eight years. Luckily she had some free time before dinner so she headed above deck to see if she could find Tenn. When she arrived on deck it was clear that he wasn’t there. Sophie let out a sad sigh and moved over to lean her back against the mast. Maybe it was good to have some alone time and give the others a break from her constant hovering.
She looked around the ship. It was a nice ship, not originally built for battle by the looks of it. The cannons on deck were clearly not built with the ship but rather forced into spots for the inevitable battles that came from being a pirate. It seemed more along the lines of what a sea merchant might have. The lower decks had larger cargo holds than the ship she had been on too.
As she looked around, her eyes quickly caught sight of the ship’s dog. Sophie let out a sharp whistle, drawing the dog’s attention. As it made its way over, Sophie gently reached out her hand, letting the dog get her scent before petting it. It seemed pretty friendly, instantly lifting up its head to receive more pets when it had taken in her scent. The pitbull panted and smiled with wide eyes while Sophie scratched its ears.
“I see you’re getting along with Rosie.” A voice broke Sophie's attention away from the dog. She looked up to see Marlon as he strolled over to her. “She’s a real sweetheart once you get to know her. I’m Marlon by the way. Don’t know if you remember. We’ve only talked once or twice.” He gave a genuinely friendly smile that surprised Sophie.
“I remember.” Sophie continued to pet Rosie as she looked at Marlon. “She’s a good dog.”
“She sure is.” Marlon smiled down at the dog before kneeling down to pet her, laughing when Rosie started licking his face. “Oh. That reminds me, there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you.” Marlon stopped showering Rosie with love to turn his eyes upwards to Sophie.
Sophie’s body immediately tensed at his statement. It seemed like everyone had endless questions for her. “And what would that be?”
“I wanna spar against you. I know you’ve only been on board for a little while, but I wanna see what sort of skills you bring to the table.”
Sophie’s eyes widened in surprise, her body relaxing slightly. She had figured his question would be something heavy and more complicated than a simple request for a duel. She let out a small sigh of relief. “Sure. I’ll spar you.”
Marlon’s eyes seemed to light up with excitement at her acceptance.
After a few minutes the area had been cleared and was set up for the sparring session. Sophie glanced down at her wooden sword, spinning it in her hand, realizing that it was a lighter sword. They don’t use steel for practice.
“Is something wrong?” Marlon glanced over with a confused look on his face. “It’s not too damaged, is it?”
“No.” Sophie answered as she moved the sword in her hand. “I’m just used to fighting with two. Would it be okay if I had another sword?”
“No problem.” Marlon disappeared into a room before returning with a second sword and a barrel of what looked to be the practice weapons. Marlon tossed the sword towards Sophie who caught it with ease. “You ready?” Marlon slowly moved into his fighting stance, pointing his sword towards her.
Sophie got into her fighting stance, placing most of her weight on her back leg while holding the two swords near her sides. She simply nodded, signaling the beginning of the match.
The two ran towards each other, wood clashing with a loud thunk as their swords connected. Marlon was a pretty good fighter, having a fairly good balance between offense and defense. Never shying away from a chance to attack but not naive enough to forego defense when the situation called for it.
Sophie struggled a bit at first to block his attacks. After all, it had been several years since she held a blade. She decided the best chance she had to win was to increase the speed of her attacks, using one of her blades to attack his left shoulder while using the other to lunge at his right side. He was able to block the first onset of attacks, throwing in a few jabs of his own, some of which hit their target. But as her attack’s speed increased he slowly started to panic, causing his defense to wither away until Sophie found an opening and disarmed him. Marlon’s wooden sword flew through the air before landing loudly onto the deck.
Both gasped for air, their chests heaving with exertion.
“Wow.” Marlon took a deep breath in. “You’re pretty good.” A happy smile appeared on his lips.
Sophie smiled back at him, not used to any sort of praise.“You’re pretty impressive yourself.”
“Sophie!”
Sophie’s eyes shot up to see one of the older street rats stomping over. “What the hell!” Mitch huffed, his shoulders tense. “You didn’t tell me you were finally up for sparring. You have to duel me!”
“It just sort of happened, Mitch,” Sophie gave a half-hearted apologetic look. “But fine, I’ll spar with you too.”
Mitch gave a huge smile, sprinting over to the barrel and leaning in to it to grab one of the wooden daggers. Spinning it in his hand, he began maneuvering the blade through his fingers. Sophie looked on at her childhood friend as he did some of his knife tricks. Typical Mitch. Mitch quickly crouched, holding the blade in his right hand, ready to fight. As soon as Sophie entered her stance he leaned forward, launching off his right foot and hitting her with a barrage of attacks.
Luckily she had warmed up with Marlon. Her muscle memory kicked in and she was able to dodge and block most of Mitch’s relentless attacks. Mitch swung around the dagger, dancing with quick jabs here and there, constantly moving around Sophie who waited patiently for her opening. The longer the battle drew on, the more cocky Mitch got, throwing in a trick in front of each attack.
Suddenly he ran behind Sophie, sliding hard across the deck to strike at her back only for her left sword to block it, protecting her back and leaving her right sword free to attack. Sophie looked back with a confident smile towards Mitch then proceeded to immediately hit her hilt against Mitch’s side which caused him to stagger back, cursing furiously. There was the opening she was looking for. Using her right sword, Sophie clashed her sword against Mitch’s dagger before slashing her other sword against it on the opposite side. The two swords locked against the dagger and with a quick twist Mitch’s dagger had fallen to the ground. Before he could even hope to grab his weapon, a wooden sword was at his throat.
“I win.” Sophie looked at Mitch with a smug smirk.
Mitch grumbled, refusing to take Sophie’s hand when she offered it, and sulked away. However, it wasn’t before declaring that next time he would not only win but totally kick her ass.
Sophie let out a small laugh as she caught her breath. Her hands were clutching her knees. It felt amazing to fight again. The rush of adrenaline, the sweat on her brow, the confidence that swirled within her. There was nothing like it. It also helped Sophie gauge the crew’s skill to see just how strong the Ericson Pirates really were.
Her eyes scanned the deck, slowly looking around for another person to challenge, hoping to find one more opponent before dinner. Her eyes quickly found Violet who was busy talking with Prisha. The two seemed completely lost in their conversation, both of them smiling at each other while they talked.
“Hey, Vi!” Sophie walked forward, standing in front of the pair. Violet glanced up at the familiar voice. While Violet seemed happy to see Sophie, Prisha was another story. Her body language instantly changed, becoming more tense and suspicious of the redhead. Her eyes locked onto Sophie, watching her every movement.
Sophie tried to ignore the tension, focusing on Violet instead. “Care for a match?
Violet sighed before standing up. “Sure. But I’m pretty shit at fighting.”
“Come on. The only thing I bet that’s full of shit is that sentence.” Sophie remarked with a smile. A small part of her realized how stupid that sentence had sounded, but she didn’t care. Sophie watched as Violet moved past her and went over to the pile of practice weapons.
Violet grabbed a small wooden dagger which she simply placed in her sheath before turning her attention back to Sophie.
Sophie found it odd that Violet had tucked the sword away but decided not to think too much of it.
“Alright. You ready?” Violet looked up at her friend.
“Yes.” Sophie got into her fighting stance once more. She felt a slight level of tension to this battle. Prisha’s eyes seemed to be focused on the sparring match but even more so on Sophie.
Violet slowly placed her left foot in front of her and her right foot slightly back as she raised up her fists. Sophie’s face twisted in confusion. Is she going to fight with her fists?
Before she had time to ask, Violet had already dashed forward, closing the distance between them in mere seconds. Sophie felt her heart tighten from surprise. Holy shit! How is she this fast?!? On the streets Violet was one of the faster kids, but this was on a whole other level. Sophie could barely backstep before Violet’s first hit connected. Her fist dug into Sophie’s stomach with a sickening thud as Sophie gasped for air. Before she could fully process it, Violet had already landed her second attack, kicking harshly against Sophie's leg and causing her to collapse on her knees.
This should do it! Violet rushed towards the side, turning sharply on her heel, putting all of her weight into her elbow, swinging towards Sophie’s hands in hopes of disarming her. Her attack was suddenly stopped by Sophie’s blades.
Sophie looked up, glaring at Violet. Her face was twisted in anger as she struggled to maintain her block on Violet’s attack. A shiver ran up Violet’s spine. Sophie’s eyes burned with a similar fire to Minnie’s. Violet’s concentration disappeared, her feet stumbling underneath her as she took a few shaky steps back before Sophie jumped up and with one hit knocked Violet down.
Sophie hovered above Violet with a proud smile, her eyes still holding a look that was far too similar to Minnie’s when she pointed her sword towards Violet. “I guess I win.” Sophie coughed, still feeling Violet’s fist hit in her gut. Sophie gave a kind smile as she reached out a hand towards Violet.
“I told you my fighting was shit.” Violet mumbled. Her hand locked around Sophie’s accepting the help.
“Please, Vi. A second quicker and you would’ve won the match.”
Violet stood up shakily.
Sophie looked at Violet who wouldn’t meet her gaze, focusing on the deck instead. She paused for a moment, feeling Violet’s hand trembling in hers.
Sophie’s eyes softened, studying her friend’s hand carefully.
Violet didn’t respond though, pulling her hand sharply from her friend’s grasp. She turned away, walking towards the lower decks. A tense aura consumed the air around her.
Prisha glared at Sophie, her eyes held such a strong level of distrust in them. Prisha’s expression softened with concern as she looked back in Violet's direction. Without a word she followed Violet down below decks, leaving Sophie alone.
Sophie stood there, reflecting on the fight. It was clear that something had shook Violet. A sickening feeling entered Sophie’s stomach. She had a good idea of what it may be.
