Hello! I had a quick question for you regarding your jewelry on shapeways. Have you ever explored the possibility of making a double-sided piece? The idea I had in specific was one of your normal pieces with an epithet(s) written in hieroglyphics on the reverse. Would such a thing be possible?

Hi Anon,

I’m afraid that option isn’t in my toolset and I haven’t been able to successfully do it manually. In the short term, what I could do is make one with a flat back and provide you with a separate file containing the hieroglyphs which you could get someone to laser engrave onto the back for you. I know it’s probably not the same as what you’re hoping for, but it is an option until such a time as I work out how to have differing sides on the same piece.

How my Jewelry is made

Today, I want to give you some insights into my design process and everything that follows afterward.

Everything starts in OpenScad. OpenScad is open-source software for creating solid 3D CAD objects. I usually start by creating the design elements I have in mind using simple shapes like cylinders, cubes, and spheres. After that I add the ring etc. that is needed to finish the object.

Only after the design is finished, I check to make sure the item can be produced and might make some tweaks if I run into problems. If there are no problems, I have a finished model of the desired ring in US size 7.

For the design elements to change their size according to the ring size, all measurements need to be changed from natural numbers to equations. It sounds really complicated, but after you've done that a couple of times, it's actually straightforward.

After the design process is done, I'll create the renders for my shop, watermark them. Write up descriptions and set the price, and then my job is done.

When my product is ordered, Shapeways becomes active: The requested item is printed in wax using a specialized high-resolution 3D-printer. The wax print is then put into a container where liquid plaster is poured around it. After the plaster has hardened, the wax is melted out in a furnace, and the remaining plaster becomes the mold. The precious molten metal is poured into this mold and set to harden. After the plaster is broken away, the model is revealed and will then be cleaned and hand-polished.

After everything is finished, the Shapeways team will then ship your new jewelry item.

Last week was amazing. @scyllastew came up to Canada to visit me, and we spent the whole week together. I think it’s the only time I’ve really been able to properly relax without worrying about my job or my countless projects.

While she was here, she gave me a birthday gift she’d been preparing for many months - a pendant version of the bottle Gnome wears around his neck, cast in stainless steel. She even put it in a little corked glass bottle, which itself went inside of a little chest. Literally the perfect gift!

Now I have to figure out a way to match it for her birthday. Luckily I’ve got time!

The very first item I had printed through Shapeways; a banded silver ring with a slight twist to it. Real sterling silver - the picture is what you get out of the box, no additional polishing necessary. I particularly like the way the light catches on each of the edges here. One of the few items that will be going down in price, now available at an already-lowered $37.50 at this link.

Today is the second part of a story #birthofcrown After all of failures, I decided to model all 3D parts together and order it on #shapeways. It was a good idea. I received exactly what I wanted, but the work was still not completed. I needed to make glase and assamble all of the parts on micro rings together. First time I understood, that I don't have right tools to do it. I never made the jewelry befor and needed to learn a lot. But internet helped me as usual, I learn everything with Google haha it is my absolute favourite teacher. I made 4 big and 6 little pompoms and that's all.
