A Fall Day
A/N: Just another random one-shot in my Stark!Verse
TBH my heart just isn’t in writing and posting anymore. So IDK what to expect from me from here on out unless something SUPER inspires me and I can’t let the idea go.
Pairings/Characters: Shangqi x Stark!Reader; Bucky Barnes x Reader (platonic) Katy Chen x Xu Xialing (mentioned) Katy Chen x Bucky Barnes
Warnings: cursing, Bucky’s brooding face, mini roast sessions, Stark bullshit, breakup mentioned, mostly fluffy stupid nonsense
Summary:  We interrupt your previously scheduled one-shot for a chance at some random fluff fall goodness:
You two haven’t had a chance to just hang out and be regular people to enjoy the changing season. So, to remedy this, your doting husband has a plan up his sleeve for a great day, which is made only great by the presence of two good friends.
Previous Chapter:  A New Fear (not DIRECTLY after, can go in any place really)
Tumblr media
This was simply magical. You know what? Maybe you really did have a good reason to marry your husband, because sometimes, he really just did his best work to knock you off your feet.
Fall, the best season of them all, had arrived, and your husband had a plan set the second the coffee shops dropped all their pumpkin products.
First, he started your day with a pumpkin beverage. Could your AI have made it for you or ordered it? Yes, absolutely, but where was the care if, for once, he didn’t go out and pick it up so he could hand deliver it to you in bed?
Yawning, you opened one eye, ready to yell at him for waking the sleeping beast until you saw the drink. You gasped, shot up in bed, and stretched your hands out to grab the drink. Smirking, Shangqi placed the drink into your hands and watched as you greedily chugged it.
“And good morning to you, babe,” he said with a smile on his face. “When you finish that, get ready, I’ve got plans today.”
“Oh?” You asked after finally pulling away from the drink when it was half gone. “What’s going on?”
“You’ll see.”
“Is Katy coming?”
“She’ll be joining a little later. Bucky’s in town. He’s letting her try out a motorcycle.”
“Hm ,Bucky’s in town and didn’t come say hi first? I’m offended,” you hummed and sipped your drink some more, watching Shangqi’s facial expressions closely to try to guess what was going on. “We’re not going on a mission, are we?”
“What? No!” He laughed. “No. I just thought you could use a day out, and I know you love fall, so….”
“So!?”
“So there’s the Autumn Moon Festival in Chinatown. There’s tons of food, cooking demonstrations, acrobatics and martial arts, storytellers, and a parade, obviously,” he explained to you. “It’s no apple-picking in Upstate New York, but —“
“That sounds good,” You nodded and placed your empty cup in his hand before sitting up on your knees, leaning forward, and pressing your lips to his. “So…breakfast there, then?”
“There’s a pumpkin muffin waiting for you for the car ride.”
You sighed happily and draped your arms around his shoulders, “This is why I married you, Shangqi. I hope you know that.”
“I thought it was because I made you a better person and because I’m so damn handsome?”
“Well, I’m glad you’re not pretending it’s your intelligence,” you teased.
He gasped. Shangqi gasped before he pouted, grabbed your waist, and stood up with you. You shrieked with laughter as he dropped the both of you on the bed like a poorly executed wrestling move before he rolled over you, face hovering over yours as he playfully held your wrists to the bed.
“You’re an awful person, Mrs. Stark,” he sighed.
You beamed, “Yes, yes I am, Mr. Xu. Don’t you love it?”
He sighed again, “Yeah, I really do. Come on, get ready. If we get there and all the food is gone, I’m afraid for what you’ll do.”
“Cry, probably. Definitely cry.”
~*~
At the festival, Shangqi could see you were in heaven. There were so many foods to try. The colors and decorations were vibrant and bright,  there were beautiful trinkets, like fans, to purchase, and, naturally, you found yourself going overboard on things to buy.
Shangqi was stuffing your mouth with mooncake as the two of you shuffled through the busy streets together. You came across one of the demonstrations and watched on the sidelines as the experts displayed their martial arts prowess.
As you both were watching, you yourself felt like you were being watched. You glanced around curiously, and noticed how everyone was turning to stare at your husband. You smiled softly to yourself. He was completely oblivious to all the attention he was getting. Turning slightly, you tugged on his jacket and leaned in to speak in his ear, “You’ve been recognized, babe.”
Shangqi broke out of his daze and looked around. There were camera phones pointed at him, people talking and whispering, kids staring in awe.
He scoffed, “Nah ,that’s for you, baby —“
“Honey, consider the predominantly Asian neighborhood we are in and the very obvious lack of Asian representation in the superhero world so far,” you sighed as you grabbed his shoulders and gave him a little shake. “It’s for you.”
Shangqi gave another look around as you slipped away from him shouting that ‘bus boy is here.’ He scoffed at the old nickname you used for him, but he quickly recovered as people grabbed his arms and started dragging him over to join the other demonstrators. He looked at you wondering what he should do. You simply nodded and waved your hand in a ‘go on’ motion to prompt him. With a shrug, Shangqi displayed his own fighting prowess.
You watched with a smile on your face. You remembered your own moments when you were first being recognized. The same attention you got from people of your own culture because they felt a connection to you, a hero. It was sweet seeing that with your husband right now. Little kids were trying to follow along with him, and some adults too. People were filming him. He had all the attention.
You ended up turning it into a film session. A family or group of people handed you their phone while you were crouched down on the ground. You took pictures of them with your husband, gave the phone back, and moved it along.
“I didn’t think we’d be working,” Shangqi joked as you two eventually walked away to continue on with your day. “Sorry about that —“
“Enjoy it. All those little kids look at you and see themselves as a hero, adults too! It’s one of the perks of the business,” you smiled and squeezed his hand. “So is that woman that gave me an entire bag of scallion pancakes.”
“You are going to get sick eating all of those.”
“I’m aware, and I don’t care,” you said simply. “I didn’t judge you for eating 20 dumplings, 20!!!”
“Okay, okay,” he laughed and wrapped an arm around your shoulders. “How about we go grab some boba — “
“I want egg tarts —“
“And that too,” he nodded. “There’s a Japanese tea ceremony going on. I got tickets to see if you’re interested.”
You nodded, “Yeah, let’s do it.”
With snacks for later and drinks in hand, you two found yourselves viewing a traditional Japanese tea ceremony with other performances. You both were sitting in your seats and observing when you spotted Katy and Bucky across the way. Katy unceremoniously threw a balled up napkin at Shangqi’s face. It smacked him on the cheek and fell on the ground, causing you to stifle your giggles in the middle of this beautiful ceremony.
Afterwards, you all waited for each other outside. You locked eyes with Bucky and gave him the middle finger. He rolled his eyes as he approached, leaning down to kiss you on the cheek before giving Shangqi a hug.
“I guess we’re meeting up earlier than planned,” Katy began. “So, this can only mean one thing —“
“Katy,” Shangqi sighed. “I’m trying to give her a fall day —“
“You don’t even know what I  was suggesting.”
“Probably karaoke and booze,” Bucky hummed.
She scoffed, “What? No…”
“Why not,” you shrugged with a laugh. “It’s a San Francisco fall day, right? Let’s do it.”
“See? This is why you married her, she’s smart,” Katy draped an arm around your shoulders as she started to lead you away. “Thank god you’re here now. Bucky was making me look bad in front of everyone.”
“It’s not my fault I speak multiple languages,” he shrugged his shoulders as he and Shangqi walked behind you and Katy.
“It is, Barnes, it absolutely is!” Katy scoffed. “And he ate, like, 20 chicken wings. I can’t tell if I’m scared or turned on.”
“Oh, that’s funny. Shangqi had 20 dumplings.”
“Animals,” Katy shook her head while behind her, Shangqi rolled his eyes and Bucky snorted.
At the usual Karaoke bar, it was a little more crowded than usual with people in the area for the festivals. You guys managed to get a room right before the crowd hit, and you planned on keeping it for as long as you could. The drinks were flowing, Bucky was running out to get snacks to bring back, and you all were screaming your lungs out.
Well, all except—
“Come on, Bucky Bear,” you whined as you grabbed his arm. “You gotta sing a little something.”
Shangqi blinked as he watched you bat your eyes up at Bucky. He wasn’t sure if he was witnessing a nefarious plan, or a drunken confession.
“Fuck off, Stark.”
“Bucky bear!” You whined again, watching the soldier’s nostrils flare as his eyes darkened with an urge to throw you into the ocean. “Please?”
“What is happening?” Shangqi blurted out.
“Bucky loves a damsel in distress so I’m trying to appeal to that to get him to sing,” you explained as you stared up at Bucky. “Is it working?”
Bucky blinked twice as he stared at you in silence before answering, “Not even in your wildest dreams, Stark.”
“….You bitch.”
“I got it,” Katy slammed her drink before setting the glass on the table and marching up to him. She poked him in his chest, “Please sing. My girlfriend ghosted me. I need this.”
“Pity isn’t fair,Katy.”
“But it works, right?”
“Wait. My sister ghosted you?” Shangqi stared at Katy in disbelief. “I am too drunk for all this information. What is happening right now? Katy, are you okay?”
“Oh, sure, dude. My girlfriend’s so busy with work and some new project she’s on that she basically ghosted me and only answered ages later to say it’s done. I’m totally okay — no, I’m not okay. But I will be if Bucky starts to sing…”
Everyone slowly turned to stare at Bucky. The man with a permanent scowl rolled his eyes, grabbed a microphone, and went to pick a song. The three of you cheered while he was picking something.
“I bet it’s old as shit,” Katy whispered. “You were right, Stark, damsel works every time.”
“Told you. One time, I got him to take me to Wendy’s at 1:00 a.m. because I wanted a frosty.”
“Thank god. I thought you were in love with him,” Shangqi sighed in relief. “One super soldier love triangle was enough for me.”
“Ew? Bucky? I could never,” you shuddered at the thought.
Bucky finally picked a song and surprised the three of you. No one would have guessed when or how he came upon this, but given that he’d been through more eras in time than Steve, and had a lot more time on his hands now, maybe this was how he came upon it.
“Hungry eyes,” Bucky sang, going fully into it by thrusting his hips and making a fist against his chest. “One look at you and I can’t disguise!”
This was incredible. The three of you were frozen as you watched him. Was this really happening? Was Bucky a variant? This was insane. Never in your wildest dreams would you have guessed this was happening. It took you off guard so much, that it took you a moment to finally pull out your cell phone and start recording, only for Bucky to run over and rip it out your hand while he was singing and hold it in the air away from you.
“What a bully,” you huffed as Shangqi laughed and wrapped an arm around you. “This was a great day, honey, thank you.”
He beamed and rested his chin on the top of your head as he watched Katy grab a microphone and join in with Bucky, “Yeah? I mean, it’s no fall in New York, but —“
“But this was equally as fantastic. We needed this. Good job, babe,” you patted his chest and turned to kiss him softly on his cheek. “We should check on Xialing, though. That sounded weird.”
“I was just thinking the same thing,” he sighed. “I’m sure it’s fine. I’ll give her a call first.”
“Good,” you nodded. “Maybe take Katy out. Let her pick which car of my dad’s and go have a day together.”
“Are you sure you want to do that?”
“What? Yeah, she’s a great driver. I trust her. Better driver than I am, at least,” you shrugged your shoulders. “Better than you too, grandma.”
“Wow, okay. Wow,” he nodded while you were cackling. “Yeah, yeah, love you too, Y/N.”

love and nature- shangqi
pairings: xu shangqi x reader warnings: nature, a very loud distaste for bugs, dramatic reader, a complete lack of understanding over rafts and camping and hiking lol, oh yeah hiking, mention of having kids about: request! (PH2) person a and b stranded on a raft in the middle of a lake+(DF28) “my mom wants to know when we’re having kids.”+(PK7) person a peppering kisses all over person b’s face
“i hate this,” you huff, swatting away a tree branch that nearly smacks you in the face. shangqi’s eyebrows furrow in front of you before he turns to you, causing you to bump into his chest after you don’t notice him in time.
“don’t be so dramatic, it really isn’t that bad,” shangqi urges, gesturing to his surroundings. “look how pretty it is. doesn’t it smell so fresh? there are so many trees here.”
you nod, “that would be expected. as we are in a wild forest.”
“we are not in a—look at the trees!”
you stare at him before observing the green above you. it is pretty. but the beauty is definitely dimmed by the bugs that buzz around you and the branches that threaten to break your skin. camping—nature—is definitely not your thing.
“i appreciate the trees and all they do for us and hope there will be gazillions more trees than there is now next month. this does not mean i want to stand underneath them while mosquitos eat me alive and bears sharpen their claws so they can eat me, too.”
shangqi laughs, leaning over to press his lips to your warm forehead, “enjoy it. it’s not as bad as you’re making it out to be.”
you scoff as he turns to continue walking. “easy for you to say. the nature practically parts to create a pathway for you.” you stumble over a particularly large rock and scowl at the cut a small branch makes on your chin. “meanwhile,” you continue, wiping at it, “it attacks me.”
at the little streak of blood smeared on your palm, you gasp dramatically, making shangqi turn around. “look!” you cry, showing him your hand and then pointing to your wound, “i’m injured!”
with a chuckle, he kisses your nose, then smears at the cut with a careful thumb, inspecting it for a couple of seconds before making his diagnosis.
“i think you’ll live,” he tells you. at your pout, he kisses your cheeks, “i’ll disinfect and put a band-aid on it when we get to our campsite.”
you look up at him with wary eyes.
“i’ll even kiss it better.”
“fine,” you huff, beginning to give in, trudging forward with him, “how much longer until we get there anyway? i don’t get why we couldn’t have just camped or whatever outside my apartment. there’s a tree there and you don’t have to walk this much just to get medical attention.”
shangqi laughs at you again, “just ten minutes, promise.”
-
twenty minutes later, you glare at shangqi, your chest rising and falling heavily while, annoyingly, shangqi barely looks phased, “that was not ten minutes.”
“well, it was supposed to be thirty, so i think it kind of evens out.”
“thirty?” you repeat, “why didn’t you tell me?”
“would you have accompanied me with such calmness and non-grouchiness if i told you?” shangqi counters, and you only sigh, jutting out your chin so he can observe the dried blood of the gash.
“i could’ve passed out from the blood loss,” you inform petulantly, wincing exaggeratedly when shangqi runs a freshly sanitized finger over the cut, gently dabbing at it with an alcohol wipe. he taps at your cheek in comfort, blowing on the light stinging after he cleans it.
“you’re so dramatic,” he mumbles through a smile, reaching to his first-air kit to pull out several band-aids, “which one d’you want? cats or this super cool one of me?”
“they made band-aids of you? cool!” you exclaim. “cats, please,” you request, holding back a smile when he shoots you a look and picks the one of him—the one you actually wanted—anyway.
he kisses your bandaged chin, “all better, huh?” then goes up to your nose before simply kissing your entire face.
through a giggle, you gently push him away without real intent, “i’m all full of leaves and forest.”
shangqi hums before pressing his lips to yours, “don’t care.”
“this is just a distraction because you’re dragging me to the lake tomorrow,” you point out against him, “and because you’re making me sleep in the middle of bug central.”
“i’ll protect you,” shangqi brushes off, “besides, the lake barely has any alligators.”
“you’re as scared of spiders as i am—what did you say?”
-
“i can’t believe you’re doing this to me,” you mutter the next morning, arms wrapped around yourself as you watch shangqi take down your tent and store it into your backpack, his own already packed into his. he nudges it, pushing it inside the backpack that will make the ten-minute trek to the lake seem like way more. “first, i wake up to like six cockroaches outside my tent, freezing my ass off and sticks in my hair, at like three in the frickin’ morning because you want to go to a lake infested with alligators, and now i have to carry half of everything we have while we fight for our lives completely unnecessarily.”
“you’re excited,” shangqi insists, setting his hands on his hips as he looks proudly at your pack before picking it up to hand to you. “it’ll be fun,” he assures, “you love the ocean.”
“we’re going to a lake.”
shangqi pulls out his phone, wincing for a second as he hands you the pack, “i only have like five percent left because i forgot to charge it before we left.”
your brows furrow, shrugging on the backpack, “should we be going, then? what if we get stuck or something in the middle of the lake?” you grunt as you begin to tilt with the weight. shangqi quickly comes up to steady you, then gently pull the hair pulled when you put the thing on.
“that’s not going to happen,” shangqi assures, patting your shoulders and threading your fingers through his so he could guide you through the forest.
“okay,” you sigh, “i trust you.”
“whoa, are you warming up to this?” shangqi asks, sarcastic disbelief in the way he turns to you. you squint at him.
“no,” you reply, “my other option is to sit here and wait until bugs eat me alive. i’d really rather not.”
“aww,” shangqi coos, “love.”
you can’t help but admit how pretty your surroundings are, the excessive green and fresh air a nice change to the pavement and smell of city. you mumble something about it to your boyfriend and immediately regret it when he grins, boasting that he was right to take you on this trip and exactly how much he knew you’d enjoy it. you just grumble, avoiding roots that threaten to bring you to the ground.
sure enough, in ten minutes, you and shangqi arrive at a sparkling green lake. you set your backpack down and observe as shangqi unpacks the inflatable raft, setting it up as you decide to take advantage of the view and take pictures, planning on posting them and pretending like you hike up here each week. shangqi notices while he keeps the raft steady and chuckles.
“what?” you ask, even though you already know the answer.
“what’s gonna be your caption?” he questions, “‘nothing can beat the feeling of being one with nature’?”
you laugh, “no, i was thinking something like ‘i don’t know what’s healthier. the hike or being outside,’ but i like yours better.”
“did you take a picture of me, too?”
“mhm,” you hum, shooting him a wink, “but those are for me.”
grinning, shangqi shakes his head, patting the inflated raft, “ready.”
pursing your lips, you poke at it with a finger, raising suspicious eyes to your boyfriend, already putting his backpack back on and grabbing his paddles. “are you sure?”
“yes,” he nods, helping you with your backpack again. apprehensively, you take the hand he offers to help you climb into the raft, getting in after you. the feeling underneath you when you’re on the water makes you anxious, feeling unsteady, and you grasp shangqi’s arms when he’s about to handle your paddles.
“i’m going to fall,” you warn.
“you’re sitting down.”
making a strange noise, you loosen your hold but don’t remove your hands until you see the pair of paddles he has. forcing yourself to let go, you take yours from his hands, giving him a thumbs up before attempting to paddle.
“smooth, y/n. you don’t need to go fast,” shangqi instructs. you follow his advice, mimicking his speed and feeling excited when you begin to move farther out.
“i’m so good at this,” you let him now, making him snort.
“uh huh.”
with your concentration, you don’t notice shangqi reaching to grab your phone, starting to snap a few pictures of you before you notice his paddling beginning to waver and turn to him. “hey!” you exclaim, “i look like a mess!”
setting your paddle down to reach for your phone. he moves back and you follow until you’re on top of him and your phone is nearly in the water. squeaking, you wrap your hand around it and hug it to your chest, falling on shangqi in the process. the raft oscillates dangerously, so your arms wrap around your boyfriend’s middle as if he was a floating device while he reaches out to steady it. a few seconds of silence pass of your panic you can feel the rumble of shangqi’s chest underneath your cheek, and you begin to laugh, too.
“dummy,” you tease, “what if you dropped my phone and we got stuck here? yours is dead.”
“you looked really pretty,” shangqi excuses weakly. your eyes crinkle as you press your lips to his.
“let’s just keep paddling,” you tell him, pecking his lips one more time before carefully sitting up, reaching to grab your paddle, and turning when you can’t. “wait, where’s my paddle?”
looking back, you notice shangqi looking for his as well, a hand coming up to cover your mouth when you spot it on the water, further and further away, beginning to dip. you find yours on the other side, in the same predicament. they must have fallen off with all the moving.
looking around, you realize the both of you have strayed far enough from where you took off that you can’t even see the end of the lake, which seems much, much bigger now.
“oh my god,” you mumble, “we’re stranded. we’re stuck. we’re stuck on the lake like i said we would be, oh my god.”
shangqi catches up quickly, shaking his head, “no, no we’re fine. we’re fine, we still have the raft.”
“how do we get back? which way is it?” you question, realizing how little you actually know, and with shangqi’s silence, you imagine he’s as clueless as you are.
“we still have your phone,” shangqi points out weakly.
grasping at your last hope, you turn it on, cringing at the twenty percent battery you have before hurrying to your call list. “i don’t have service,” you realize, the lack of bars bright even after you lower the brightness to conserve battery, “or know what number to call.”
“i know it, and maybe you’ll get service if you stand up, i’ll hold on to you.”
nodding along, you type the number into your phone, then rise to unsteady feet, the only thing preventing you from falling the firm hands shangqi has on your hips. you squint at your phone through the sun, catching the notification saying you have service that pops up when you bend it at a certain angle. “aha!”
“go, go!”
the low brightness makes it hard to see as you try to click the call button, unknowingly swiping and clicking the number on speed dial.
“hello?” you say into the phone once it starts to beep, bringing it down to your ear and knowing you have limited time.
“honey?” a voice comes through the speakers. your brows furrow when you realize who it is.
“mom? what are you doing there?”
“in my house? just waiting for my only child ever to call me. how are you, my dear?”
“what? i’m—it doesn’t matter! look, shangqi and i are on a camping trip, and—”
“oh, how fun! you never tell me anything, do you think he’s going to propose?”
“what? mom, listen—”
“oh, you know time is running out, you know, biologically. and i want grandkids. of course, you and i have never really talked about it, so i suppose you’ll have to tell me if you want them, but i sure do think you and shangqi would be wonderful parents.”
“that’s really kind, mom, but we’re out in the lake, and—”
“but if you were—when do you think that would be? a year from now? two?”
“mom, please—”
the line goes dead, and you nod, looking at the no network signal right next to your low battery warning.
“y/n?” shangqi asks, watching you sit down in the raft. “what did they say?”
“well, my mom wants to know when we’re having kids.”

Tumblr media
“Oh, my God who are you?”
Your eyes shift to Shangqi who just woke up from his surgery. His eyes are still sleepy, his voice is slurry mostly from just waking up for the anesthesia. His liquid brown scans your features as if he forgot who you are. His poor little face looks a bit puffy, but he’s still your sweet Shangqi.
“Um, who do you think I am?” you ask as you sit there, peeling an apple for him.
“I don’t know but you’re really hot.”
You almost choke at that. You’re trying very hard to contain your giggle, but the more you look at your boyfriend, the funnier this gets. Despite the fact that he's still half awake, he manages to make your face warm from just a few words.
“Come again now?”
“Did the doctor send you here?” he asks again. His brows pulled into a deep frown as his eyes glance at you briefly then back to the ceiling as if he’s trying to watch something float around the room. His hand reaches up, but you quickly pull it down to his side.
“No. I came here on my own,” you say, trying to stifle laughter.
“Really?!”
You nod. “Yeah, I bring you some snacks, some milk tea for you. The doctor said no boba for at least another hours”
“Whoah. Whoah. You bring me food too? How do you know I like boba tea” he asks again, his eyes still in a daze as he glances at your face then he starts chuckling to himself. “Oh my God, you’re so cute and you’re bringing me food. How do I get so lucky?”
You laugh now. “Well, I don’t know Shangqi, you tell me.”
“What’s your name? Can I get your number, please?”
He looks too cute. You tell him your name, followed by “Well, I’m your girlfriend, Shangqi.”
“You’re my girlfriend?!” His eyes widen at the revelation as if he cannot believe himself. “You’re really my girlfriend?! Holy shit, how do I get so lucky?” Then he clamps his mouth as he catches himself swearing. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to swear in front of you, but you’re so damn gorgeous. I can’t believe that you’re my girlfriend.”
You laugh. “It’s ok, baby. You’re just waking up. I heard you said the worst thing.”
He sniffles a bit, not from crying of course. “Oh my god, you call me baby. I’m so lucky. Wow. I can’t believe you’re my girlfriend.”
You giggle before patting his head. “It's ok baby. You're definitely not the only lucky one here.”

The French countryside passes you like a blurry dream, one you wish you could recall every detail to daydream the coming night. The window creaks as the train speeds across the tracks; the shaking and rumbling nearly lull you to sleep, the words inked in the book in front of you slowly forgotten. Aside from the soft vibrations of the train, loud voices of a couple seated in the booth beside you, keep you awake. A couple no older than 45, quarrel with one another. Your three years of high school French picks up bits and pieces of their argument.
Something about missing the correct stop and airplane tickets. Your body jumps when the woman bolts from her seat and starts towards the next carriage, her husband following quickly behind. Their scene doesn’t go unnoticed, their harsh tones definitely disrupting other passengers. Your pointer finger plays with the corner of the page, eyes focused on the city coming into view, mesmerized by its beauty.
“Je suis désolé de vous déranger. Puis-je avoir ce siège?” You turn your head, only be met with warm, honey eyes. A man with dark fluffy hair gives you a gentle smile. He’s dressed in a white shirt and onyx pants speckled with colorful paint, an olive blouson jacket tied around his waist. He has a sketchbook tucked under his arm while a distressed, caramel leather satchel sits on top of his shoulder.
You offer him an apologetic smile, “Oh, I’m sorry. I don’t speak french.”
“Sorry, uhm. Is it okay for me to sit here? A couple was arguing in the other carriage and I couldn’t focus.”
“Of course, please.” You move your bag onto the floor by your feet, as the stranger settles in beside you. “I’m Y/N, by the way.”
“I’m Shangqi, nice to meet you.” When you shake his hand, you notice the graphite staining knuckles and side of his palm. “So, where are you heading?”
“Not sure if I’m being honest. I might stay in Paris for a bit. Maybe take a train to Brussels, possibly Luxembourg too.” You recline into your seat and turn towards Shangqi, “And you?”
There’s a strange magnetic pull towards you that Shangqi can’t put his finger on. Maybe it’s the way how freely you answered him; no schedule or agenda to dictate your travel, no worries to anchor you down. How effortlessly beautiful you appear in a soft periwinkle sweater and denim skirt. If he didn’t know any better, you were an angel sent by the heavens to grace the earth.
“Paris.” It’s the only answer he’s able to give, still beguiled by you. He shakes himself from your trance when you ask him what’s his plan there. “I’m a painter. My work is being showcased at an art gallery.”
“You must be a big-time artist if you have a whole art gallery dedicated to your work.” Your tone isn’t condescending but genuine and intriguing.
“I mean, I wouldn’t say anything big. Just a painter.” Heat dusts across Shangqi’s cheeks, unable to fully accept your compliment.
You offer him a reassuring smile, “Painters are artists, no? Artists in their own unique creativity and medium. I think you’re being too humble. I’m positive whatever is being showcased, is amazing.”
“You seem so sure for someone who’s never seen any of my work.” Shangqi’s laugh is light and music to your ears. It’s a sound that you wished you could hear everyday for the rest of your life. Every morning when you wake up and every night before you go to sleep.
“Show me then.”
○•*•○※○•*•○※○•*•○※○
For the remainder of the train ride, Shangqi shows you every piece in his sketchbook, photos of his previous gallery in San Francisco and New York, and enthusiastically retells the story of how he accidentally spilled a gallon of neon pink paint on best friend. There’s no awkward pause, just laughter and banter between one another. For two people who have only known each other for 25 minutes, they gazed and conversed like they’ve known each other for 25 years. Old pals catching up.
“Alright, I feel like we’ve talked enough about me. Let’s talk about you” Shangqi proposes. You and Shangqi had moved the conversation to the dining car, an espresso sitting in front of the both of you. The dining car is a bit more lively; other passengers chat while sipping on tea or munch on pastries and sandwiches.
You set down your cup and rest your chin on the palm of your hand, “What do you want to know?”
“Anything.” Shangqi doesn’t care what you give him, as long as it's something. “Maybe why Paris?”
“What do you mean?” You sit forward, curious about how he’ll answer.
Shangqi clears his throat and leans closer to you, his voice a bit quiet. “You said you’re staying in Paris. What’s in Paris for you?” His heart starts to flutter when a smile spreads across your lips.
“A lot of things are in Paris, Shangqi.” Your eyes now focus on the espresso, finger moving the spoon in circles. “I’m not sure what’s there or what I’m looking for. But what I do know is that I’m glad to be there,” You softly chuckle when you look up and see Shangqi’s peculiar expression.
“I’m glad you’re here too.” Shangqi doesn’t register what he’s said until you let out an airy laughter. “I-I mean uhm, if you didn’t come to Paris I wouldn’t have met you here. The train ride probably would’ve been much more boring.”
“Maybe, but you’d probably be occupied with your sketches and what not.” For the first time during your conversation, there’s a small pause. Your gaze is set on the falling sun outside your window. Shangqi takes this moment to take in how hues of orange and pink rest on your face, light illuminating the high points of your face. Your eyes sparkle like diamonds, expression angelic.
You turn your gaze back to Shangqi, a hopeful diction plays in your voice. “I think I’m in Paris to find beauty.”
“Beauty?” Shangqi quizzically asks.
“Within myself, that is.” There’s something sad in your eyes, but your smile hides it. “C’mon, we only have an hour left before we get to Paris. Let’s go relax a bit.” You leave no room for Shangqi to argue as you’re already halfway down the aisle.
○•*•○※○•*•○※○•*•○※○
Shangqi never figured out what you meant by beauty. Beauty within myself, you said. What did you mean by that? He came to the conclusion you’re beautiful inside and out based on the conversation alone. Genuine. Intelligent. Kind. Adventurous. Empathetic. The list goes on. Shangqi has never met anyone like you. One in a million.
Soft snores escape from you, lips slightly parted. The bit of sun emitted a heavenly glow as your head rested against the windows. The sight of you, feet tucked under and his jacket draped across your body, was something Shangqi didn’t know if he'd get another glimpse. Maybe in another lifetime, but here right now, Shangqi wanted to eternalize it.
Shangqi flips open to a clean, empty page in his sketchbook. The moment his pencil touches the paper, Shangqi’s creativity binds to your beauty. He meticulously outlines the structure of your body, slowly adding details to match the alluring curves and dips of you. The mesmerizing attraction of you fuels his mind and hands, drowning all his thoughts and artistry onto the paper. He’s not sure how long ago he finished the portrait, but there’s an eternal happiness Shangqi feels. The beauty he once thought to slip through his fingers, now immortalized by graphite. Pleased with his portrait, Shangqi slips his sketchbook into his satchel. Stealing one more uninterrupted moment, he watches the slow rise and fall of your body.
“Mesdames, messieurs, dans quelques instants notre TGV desservira la gare du Nord. Une minute d’arrêt. Assurez-vous de ne rien avoir oublié.”
“Ladies and gentlemen, in a few minutes our TGV will enter Nord station. One minute stop. Make sure you don’t forget anything.”
The train announcement stirs you awake, rubbing the bits of sleep away. You turn to Shangqi, giving him a sweet smile. “Thank you for the jacket. You didn’t have to.” You hesitantly peel the jacket off, already missing it’s warmth and lingering smell of his bergamot and lemon cologne. “Are we almost there?”
“Yea. Train announcer said we’ll be there in a few minutes. We should probably start packing up” he says.
It’s a comfortable silence as you guys pack, while stealing glances at one another. You want to ask more, wanting to find out where Shangqi’s staying and seeing if he’s up for dinner. But before you could say a word, the announcer notifies you’ve arrived at the station. Passengers swiftly unboard, eagerly ready to go wherever they need to be. You and Shangqi, however, draw out time, holding onto every second left you have with one another.
“So where are you heading to now that you’re in Paris?” Shangqi asks.
“I’m staying with my friend, Yelena. She should be here soon.” You glance around the busy station, hoping Yelena isn’t here yet. You turn back to Shangqi, “Are you meeting up with anyone? Or heading off right away?” There’s a bit of hope in your voice, hope that Shangqi would stay a little longer.
“Yea, I gotta get going. I need to meet up with the gallery director and make sure everything is good to go. But you-” Shangqi is cut off when Yelena runs towards you and wraps her arms around your shoulders.
“Yelena! Hey!” You giggle when she presses a kiss to your cheek. “I’ll be right out, just saying by to a friend”
“Alright, but hurry and wrap it up. Nat and Clint are hungry and grumpy.” Yelena grabs your bags, not before giving Shangqi a deathly stare.
“Is she always that uh, protective?” Shangqi can still feel Yelena’s eyes burning into the back of his head.
“Only with the ones she loves. Yelena is really delightful once she warms up to you.” You look over Shangqi’s shoulder to see an impatient Natasha tapping her watch. “I have to get going, my friends are waiting on me. I had a lot of fun getting to know you, Shangqi. I wish we had more time together.”
You pull Shangqi into a hug, holding onto him longer than one should. Shangqi presses a soft kiss into your hair. You give Shangqi one last smile before you start your way towards the stairs.
You’re halfway up when Shangqi tugs your hand, “Wait I forgot.” He pulls out a small notebook and pen, frantically scribbling something down. He rips off the paper and hands it to you, “My art gallery show. It’s in two days and I’d love for you to come. If you’re not too busy that is.”
You take the paper, smiling at the scribbled address. You plant a quick kiss close to his mouth and smile, “I’ll be there. See you soon Picasso.”
Shangqi’s feet are planted firmly on the staircase, unwilling to move as passerbys enter and leave the station. The soft touch of your lips and its warmth linger on his skin the remainder of the night. There is an unwavering spell you’ve already cast on him and you don’t even know.
You are his muse. And Shangqi will spend a lifetime painting you in color.

University Blues
Shangqi x Reader
A/N: Man... I’m really on a roll here! Maybe after this I’ll switch to a different character, either MCU or DCEU. But for now, enjoy this idea that I randomly conjured up on a Saturday. Thanks for reading! Also some of these are actually what I dreamt of when I was younger - like being a forensic scientist.
Genre: PG 13
Warnings: Fluffy and sweet? Nah that shouldn’t even be a warning. Here’s to satisfying my fantasies...? Apologies for the longer than expected headcannon. Like this gif, who needs hugs too cuz I need them.
Tumblr media
You’re both in the same year at University - your taking a degree in forensics and Shangqi’s in physical education.
The first time you guys met each other? It wasn’t exactly dreamy… He was playing basketball with a group of friends, while you were running late for tennis practice.
Maybe you shouldn’t have taken a shortcut by cutting through a competitive game. You collided - real hard with Shangqi who was trying to receive a pass from his teammate.
‘Oh god!’ He sees you sprawled on the floor, rackets a few feet away from you. ‘I’m so sorry!’ - When you should have been the one apologizing instead, which you did a few seconds later.
‘No no it’s my fault I shouldn’t have, I’m so sorry!’ You thank his friends who returned you back your rackets. ‘Well… enjoy the game guys!’ You ran off without turning back to the amusement of Shangqi. He hopes he’ll see you again soon. But first he needs to know who this mystery girl is. So he asks Katy.
‘Oh (y/n)? Yeah I know her, she’s one of the main players for the team. A sick doubles player if you ask me. She trains at the university courts three times a week, usually in the evenings after- wait a god damn minute why are you interested?’ Katy springs of her bed, abandoning her journal that she was supposed to work on.
‘Nothing, I just… eh saw her one of my general elective classes…’ The moment it came out of Shangqi, he knew he was cornered. There was nothing Katy didn’t know about him.
‘HAH! Yeah right. Please don’t take me for a fool dude. You like her don’t you?’ Shangqi sighs. Yeap, there was nowhere to run.
He tells Katy about the whole saga at the basketball court. By the time he was finished, Katy was almost rolling around the floor in tears. ‘She literally ran into you and you decided, hey she’s cute!’
Yes he knew how stupid it sounded. He was always skeptical about love at first sight - but I mean look at his parents, his mom gave his dad a literal ‘ass-whooping’ on their very first meeting. Maybe he was his dad in more ways than one…
Anyways, he forces Katy to tell him your schedule for the evening. He doesn’t want to look like a creep - purposely going down to visit you. He wants it to be as natural as possible. So, Shangqi brings a basketball for good measure.
It was a Friday evening. As he walks down the path leading to the tennis courts, he can see a set of lights, shining on the centre court. You were practicing some drills with your coach where you were too focused to even pay attention to your surroundings. Shangqi decides to take a seat on the stands.
He’s absolutely mesmerized at how you contact the ball cleanly for your ground strokes. The intensity that you display never slows down as you let out a grunt after each hit to control your breathing. Your serves go in a flawless motion that allows the ball to fly over the next in a beautiful arc, landing neatly into the box.
Your coach signals the end of the session. A thumbs up for a job well done. Shangqi’s heart races as you spot him sitting on the stands. He has no idea what to say that isn’t out of the blue.
‘Hey! It’s you again, basketball guy.’ You tried to make conversation. ‘I hope you’re alright! I’m so sorry again…’ Seeing you turning your feet awkwardly, he gives you a small smile. ‘No, I’m fine. I was just finishing up my game and saw you while I was going back. Saw some tennis matches on TV and wanted to see what’s it like in real life.’
Unknowingly, you beam at him. Recently, your performance hasn’t been at your expectations. It was only with the help from your coach, you managed to pull through. But the mental block still lurked within your mind. To hear something heartening from a stranger you’ve just met, it really made your day. As warm and fuzzy as it was, one thing was still at the back of your mind…
‘Easy game today? The last time I saw you, you were sweating buckets!’ You joked. Shangqi freezes in his spot. Crap, now he’s really done it. Maybe it was best to come clean.
‘Um... yeah... well if I were to be honest with you, you were pretty interesting- that day and I thought I could, you know, get to know you better...’ He trails off, ruffling the back of his hair. You bit your lips as you tried not to grin in front of this adorable man in front of you. The truth is, Katy had given you the heads up about her friend coming to see you earlier.
‘Don’t tell him I told you! It would seriously ruin his ego.’
You decide to help Shangqi a little. ‘I know a boba place 10 minutes away from the university, wanna go there sometime? Actually if you’re free tonight, we could go there... like now.’ He stares at you, momentarily stunned. He hit the jackpot.
‘Sure! Tonight sounds great. Just let me know when you’re done,’ He gestures to your sweaty frame - yeap, you desperately needed a shower. ‘I’ll be here.’
This night turned out better than expected. You were preparing to just laze around watching your favorite shows in your sleepwear, inhaling Korean takeout from the Korean Mart that you visited last week.
Instead, you found yourself having great laughter with Shangqi while sipping on your favorite peach tea with golden bubbles.
A beep goes off Shangqi’s phone, it’s a picture of you and him in the boba shop with the message - ‘You can thank me later dumbass.’
God damn it Katy.
A/N: Hope you enjoyed it as much as I had writing it! I don’t know why this past two weeks I’ve been feeling a bit shitty but just coming up with this fluffy content makes things much better. If you wish to talk about anything, feel free to slide in and I’ll try to get back to you as soon as possible. Stay healthy, stay safe!

Who Bakes for the Baker?
A/N: Super short, random fluffy drabble during my quick break from editing.
Pairing: Shang-Chi x Reader
Warnings: None! YAY
Summary: Shangqi tries to be surprise you and sort of fails.
Tumblr media
About to put your keys into the lock of your apartment door, you stopped when you smelled something coming from the apartment. You weren’t quite sure what it was, it was a toss between…burnt, and sweet? Oh, god, did you leave something on?
You quickly jammed your key in the lock, turned it, and ran inside. You kicked your shoes across the hallway, locked the door behind you, and dropped your bags as you ran over the kitchen. Music was playing, and standing at the counter was Shangqi. He wore your apron, which was now a total mess, and was scratching his head with one hand as the other held your recipe book that held the secrets to all of your baked goods. There was a tray of brownies discarded to the side with a knife sticking out of it, flour all over your counter, his apron, his face, and it looked like he still had chocolate batter at the corner of his mouth.
“What are you doing?”
“Shit!” He dropped the book to the ground, loose leafs of paper falling everywhere as he dropped down to gather it up while you walked towards him. “I just wanted to surprise you.”
You chuckled as you eyed his mess, “What’s the occasion for such a sweet treat?”
“Sweet disaster, really,” He mumbled as he stood up from the floor and turned to face you. He stared at you, watching with pure adoration in his eyes as you reached up with your thumb to wipe the chocolate from his mouth and taste the batter. As you cringed, he explained his ideas, “I just — you kind of came to the rescue after Katy and I dropped her brother’s birthday cake.”
You shrugged a shoulder, “It was nothing.”
“Babe, you baked him a cake after working all day at your bakery.”
“Actually, I stole a cake from my bakery that I had made that day that got cancelled and redecorated it.” You clarified. “So….what, you wanted to get even with the cakes?”
“Well, no, I just — well, first, everyone raved about the cake.”
“As they should.”
He chuckled, “And I just thought, you know, you bake so much, for everyone, like, all of the time. And I thought, well, who bakes for the baker? And I tried baking something for you. Kind of failed.”
“I taste it,” You nodded. “I definitely taste the lovely sentiment and failure.”
He huffed, “You didn’t write eggs in your brownie recipe so I didn’t add them.”
“Well, yeah, but it’s  supposed to be four,” you said easily as you stabbed the brownies. “Oh, babe, these are burnt too.”
“Yeah, don’t touch that. They’re not edible.” He sighed, “I didn’t expect you home so early. I wanted to try to make cookies for you instead. This looks more….well, there’s actually instructions here.”
You laughed, “Sorry. I know I write in hieroglyphics and put ‘shit ton’ or ‘dash’ or ‘hint’ for measurements. Don’t worry. I’ll explain it, and we can do it together.”
Shangqi groaned, “Defeats the purpose of baking for the baker when you’re doing it with me and showing me.”
You scoffed, “Please. It’s still really, really sweet, no pun intended. And I appreciate the thought.” You reached up and cupped his flour-doused face and pressed a soft kiss on his lips. “It’ll be fun, and you can take cookies to work tonight.”
Shangqi sighed dramatically as he took off the apron and placed it over your head and began to tie the straps behind your back, “I suppose I can handle this.”
You grinned, “Okay, my baker in training, where’s the butter?”
His face fell, “Oh shit, I forgot the butter.”
“…That explains a lot.”

A Sibling Ordeal
A/N: UHHHHH. Yeah. Fluffy request. Let me know what you think?
Pairing: Shang-Chi x Stark!Reader
Warnings: swearing, mentions of death and heartbreak, otherwise, fluff, literal sweets and sugar, and Morgan being a sassy pants
Summary: It’s finally time for you to reunite with your family, and you think it’s also the right time to introduce them to your boyfriend, Shangqi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You chewed on your bottom lip and sat in your car, not moving, stuck at the airport only because you weren’t ready to move yet. Here you were, back in New York, working up the courage to drive to the lake house.
Originally, you had no intention of coming back here, but after everything that had happened in Madripoor, and Sam and Bucky leaning on you to see your family saying that you have to face them eventually, you decided to go. Plus, it happened to be a special weekend. It was the anniversary of when Tony and Pepper first kissed that night in Queens after the Stark Expo. It was the start of the three of you really becoming a family together and accepting what you all were to another. You figured that Pepper could surely use the company, and, honestly, you wanted her company at this moment too.
And then there was your kid sister who you met briefly and immediately ran away from, because looking at her was like staring at your dad with all the faces she made and how it looked like she could so very easily tell how full of shit people were. It was unnerving. You couldn’t look at her.
Shangqi glanced over to you, smiled sweetly, and squeezed your hand telling you that it was going to be okay. You slowly exhaled and nodded, finally starting the car for a quiet drive back to the house.
When you pulled up to the house you still couldn’t move. You sat in the car and stared at the house, then towards the lake where you had last sent your father off to. Shangqi felt the car rattle, and he looked at you cautiously.
“Are you…?”
“I’m just going to wear the gauntlets this weekend, I think,” you said as you slipped on the gauntlets and pulled a cardigan on top to hide them. You could hear a door open, and you knew that Pepper had spotted you and lost her patience in waiting for you to enter.
You swung your car door open and heard a thunk. Swearing, you slipped out and slammed the door shut to find Morgan sitting on her butt, one hand up and rubbing her forehead while her eyes narrowed and her face scrunched up as she looked up at you.
“Oh, fucking shit, I am so sorry,” You blurted out to the child. When you realized you were swearing at said child, it only got worse. “Oh, fuck I’m fucking this up already. Shit, I’m sorry, Kid.”
Morgan’s disgruntled look immediately changed to a look of amusement and mischief, a smirk that mirrored Tony’s so, so well, “Shit, fuck.”
Your face fell, “Shit.”
She grinned and launched herself at you, catching you by surprise as you fell backwards on your butt now and she settled herself by standing on your thigh and hugging you around your shoulders, “Hi big sister!”
“H-hey, Morgan,” You wrapped your arms around her to return the hug.
Hearing another car door slam shut, she looked around and spotted Shangqi standing there and leaning against the car and watching the two of you with a grin on his face. His grin fell when he caught Morgan’s eyes staring at him like he was some sort of super criminal.
Morgan pulled away and continued to stare, “That is not Uncle Steeb.”
Right. The last time Morgan had seen you both, Steve was still married to you and had yet to pull his disappearing act. Even with Tony and Steve at odds, you knew they talked about you to Morgan so she knew who her sister was, which naturally meant that she knew about Steve.
“No, kid. It’s not. Uncle Steve and I aren’t together anymore.”
Instead of looking confused, Morgan actually nodded along like she understood, “Because he’s a big bozo with a dumb face and a bad tailor?”
“Dude—what?”
“Morgan likes to quote Tony,” Pepper said as she exited the house. “Morgan, let your sister up. And you must be Xu Shangqi. It’s nice to meet you.”
Wait, Shangqi was being addressed! He grinned again, realizing he was talking to the Pepper Potts. He stood up tall, wiped his hands on his jacket, and stepped around the two of you to shake Pepper’s hand, “It’s an honor to meet you, ma’am.”
“It’s just Pepper,” She offered a warm smile and shook his hand. “Why don’t you head inside? Coffee’s hot, and I just finished making lunch.”
“Okay, sure.”
“Morgan, go show Shangqi to the table, and be nice,” Pepper added, when she saw the glimmer of mischief in her eyes.
Morgan looked up at her mom with a smirk, “I’m very nice.”
Shangqi looked at you over his shoulder as Morgan jumped up to grab his hand and drag him inside. You snickered and shrugged your shoulders as you stood up from the ground and looked to Pepper, “She is…so Tony’s kid.”
“And so are you,” Pepper said quietly, the happy voice dropping immediately. “I could slap you right now! You are just like your father. You get upset, you go on a bender, pull a disappearing act and pretend that isolating yourself from everyone who loves you is what you’re supposed to do! How could you do that? After everything we’ve been through together as a family!? I may not be your mother, (Y/N), but I raised you like you were my kid when your mom was gone and when Tony was off galavanting with whatever whore of the week. You cannot just abandon everyone you love.”
“But—but—I, I was making earthquakes—“
“Then we deal with it together as a family does. As many times as you’ve yelled at your father over the years for abandoning people, pushing people away, you went and did the same thing. You left me, you left Morgan, who has heard nothing but stories putting you on a pedestal while you were snapped, and you hurt Peter, who needed you, and Happy, and Rhodey. Don’t you ever, ever leave us again. Do you hear me?”
During her speech, Pepper’s eyes had glossed over, turned red, and there were veins popping out that you had never seen pop out of her before. All you could do was stand there like you were a pre-teen again being scolded for trying to set one of Tony’s dates on fire with your ‘Home Alone-esque’ trap. You nodded to Pepper and muttered an apology. Pepper exhaled and pulled you into her arms.
“I know it was a lot to deal with for you too,” She said quietly. “I know. And I know the physical toll on you, but we don’t abandon anyone here, we don’t do that anymore. Okay?”
You sniffled into her shoulder and nodded, “Okay.”
“Good,” She pulled away from you and wiped under her eyes with her ring fingers and smoothed down her hair. “Come inside. I made your favorite, and Morgan has been dying to finally hang out with her big sister again. But definitely try to stop cursing in front of her.”
“No promises,” you told her as you followed her inside.
~*~
Shangqi sat at the table staring at Morgan. This child was staring at Shangqi, twirling her bright red plastic knife in her hand as she stared at him without blinking—well, she tried not to blink. She’d blink rapidly after a moment and go back to glaring at him as menacingly as she could.
“Are you her boyfriend?” Morgan asked.
Shangqi was trying to hide his amusement and failing miserably. With a big, big smile he nodded, “Yes, I am her boyfriend.”
“Why?”
“Why am I her boyfriend?”
“Yes, why?”
“Morgan, what have I said? You can’t interrogate people during meals,” Pepper chided her daughter as she sat next to her, and you took the seat beside Shangqi. “Sorry about that, Shangqi.”
“It’s okay,” he nodded. “She’s cute.”
“I’m not just cute I’m also very smart and scary,” Morgan said proudly as she picked up her fork.
“Okay, Madam Confidence, good for you.” You remarked to Morgan who beamed at you with pride. “What do you want to do while I’m here?”
Morgan reached into her pocket and pulled out a piece of paper. She slid it across the table to you, prompting you to unfold the paper and look at this well-written list that was made with crayons of varying colors.
“Bake cupcakes, make dinner, watch scary movies —“
“No,” Pepper said quickly while Morgan pouted.
“Watch Disney movies, all of Star Wars, make a fort to watch the movies in, build something, go flying, build a snowman — are these all —“
“Things Tony told her he did with you. It’s all there.”
“Wow,” you laughed and showed the list to Shangqi. “We didn’t build a snowman together until I’d had a couple of degrees, I think. Definitely after his Afghanistan ordeal. Wow…”
“Beat up monsters?” Shangqi raised an eyebrow, “Where are the monsters to beat up?”
“Use your imaginations, duh.” Morgan said quickly. “Not real monsters. I’m too little for that!”
Shangqi nodded, “My sincerest apologies, Ms. Morgan.”
“It’s okay,” Morgan sipped her juice and gazed up at you, “Can we do the list?”
You smiled softly as you stared at the list, your eyes getting teary as you went through a quick cycle of memories of everything you had done with your father before Morgan was around, “Yes. I’ll be here the whole week. We can do everything.”
“Yay!” Morgan threw her hands up in the air. “Can we bake today?”
“Yes,” you nodded. “We’ll go get ingredients and make something together.”
Morgan beamed, “I can’t wait.”
You smiled at her and looked to Pepper, “Chocolate cupcakes?”
Pepper smiled too, “My favorite. Yes, if you don’t mind.”
“Not at all, Pepper. Not at all.”
——————————————-
Shangqi exited the car, ran over to your side, and promptly opened both doors at once to let you and Morgan out. Morgan had unclipped herself from the car seat and hopped out at the same time that you did. She shut the door with both hands, adjusted her coat and mittens, and went over to you to grab your hand. You chuckled and squeezed her hand, linking your arm with Shangqi’s as the three of you headed to the store.
“Ms. Morgan,” Shangqi began, trying to appeal to your sister, “do you like to walk in the market, or sit in the cart?”
“I’m very capable of walking,” Morgan stated as he grabbed a cart. “But I want to save my energy.”
He quietly chuckled to himself as you laughed and scooped her up. You set her in the cart that Shangqi was pushing as you two entered the store.
“Can we get popsicles?” Morgan asked.
“In the winter?” You raised an eyebrow, “Fuck yeah, we can.”
“Fuck yeah!” She repeated loudly in the store.
“Shit. Sorry. Don’t repeat what I say.” You said quickly.
Morgan simply cackled.
You three went around the store getting all the ingredients you need. While you were trying to reach up for the cocoa powder you need, Shangqi stood closely behind you and grabbed the cocoa powder for you and placed it in your outstretched hand. You looked up at him and scrunched up your nose as you muttered that you could’ve gotten it. He smirked and said he knew that before leaning down and stealing a kiss from you.
Morgan stared at the two of you behind her hands, fingers stretched out revealing her eyes as she watched the two of you, “Are you done?”
“Just a few more things,” you murmured as you stole another kiss.
“I meant the kissing.”
Snorting, you pulled away while Shangqi lowered his head and laughed into your hair. You glanced at Morgan and shook your head at the girl who bit her lip and stifled a giggle. You dumped the cocoa powder into the cart and went to grab a few more things. Shangqi leaned against the handles of the cart watching your every move with a smile on his face.
Morgan stared at him with narrowed, suspicious eyes, “That’s how daddy looked at mommy.”
Shangqi glanced down at Morgan, looked to you quickly, then back down at her, “What do you think looking at someone like that means?”
Morgan chewed on her lip, “That they loved each other.”
Shangqi nodded, “Exactly.”
She seemed pleased with this response as she was silent while he pushed the cart towards you. Right as you said it was time to go, Morgan begged if you could make cheeseburgers for dinner, saying that dad told her you would make him cheeseburgers when he was too upset to run off and get to Burger King. You told her no, that Pepper was cooking, but she pouted and you immediately caved to her demands, now dragging Shangqi and Morgan around the market to get what you needed in order to make cheeseburgers. All the while, Morgan was watching very, very closely to see how Shangqi treated you.
~*~
Shangqi was, probably, your least helpful assistant. After he nearly added salt instead of sugar to the butter, you learned fairly quickly that he was going to be the one that handed you the utensils, and Morgan would be the one to pass you the ingredients and help you mix things.
“I feel like I’m kind of just here to look pretty,” he remarked as he sat across from you both on the island. Morgan was sitting on the counter as well, and she looked over her shoulder to hold the chocolate batter covered spatula at him, “I think so too.”
He gasped before laughing, “You think I’m just here to look pretty too?”
Morgan shrugged, “You can’t be trusted with the materials.”
“Ingredients, bubba,” you corrected her. “I mean, technically materials. But ingredients since it’s food. You’re putting them in food.”
Morgan stared up at you, “Is what I said.”
You snickered and smeared batter on her nose. She scrunched up her face and reached into the bowl to grab some of the residual batter and smear it on your arm. Laughing, you put more on her face and swiped the bowl before she could really start a batter attack.
Unfortunately for you, you completely missed how Shangqi snuck out of his seat, made his way around the counter, and was now behind you as you tried to take the bowl to the sink. You gasped in surprise, and he smirked and dipped two fingers into the bowl, grabbed the batter, and smeared it down your nose, your lips, and your chin. As you stared at him, blinking in surprise, he sucked the batter off of his fingers.
“You bitch,” you breathed as you stared up at him.
He shrugged, “What? I didn’t do anything.”
You shook your head and tried to yank the bowl back from him. He wouldn’t let it go, and you tilted your head to the side in surprise. You could feel vibrations picking up behind you, but you didn’t do anything to stop them. Morgan ran across the counter and threw her arms around your shoulders. Hanging on your back, she shouted that she got you and now was the perfect time to attack.
Shangqi shouted ‘victory’ as he smeared more batter on your face, and you did nothing but stand there laughing as Morgan and him teamed up against you. Pepper entered the kitchen when she heard shouting, and she paused to lean against the wall and watch this moment with a smile on her face: her two girls having fun together and bonding, something she’d wished could have happened from the moment Morgan was born.
And then there was Shangqi. This was different. Pepper always pictured this moment happening with Steve, chocolate batter in his hair, a grin that reached the corners of his eyes, and the look of adoration he always used to give you, but Steve broke your heart. Steve was gone, and now taking his place in Pepper’s imagery was Shangqi: A man who somehow defied all of Pepper’s preconceived notions of how much Steve loved you with the way Shangqi was smiling and playing with you and Morgan. She could see how he was making such a strong effort to include Morgan, repeating her name, asking her questions, including her in all of his actions as he tormented you with raw baked goods.
Pepper also took notice of how Shangqi would glance down and watch the counter where Morgan’s feet were to make sure she didn’t trip and fall, and how he was quickly moving things out of the way that either of you girls could possibly bump into. He was so conscious of everything around as you all played, and he spotted Pepper who was now filming the scene in front of her with her phone.
“Mrs. Stark — Mrs. — Ms. Potts, why don’t you join us?”
Pepper grinned as she walked over and put her phone in her pocket, “Pepper, you can call me Pepper, and oh, boy, look at this mess!”
“It’s a party, mama,” Morgan said cheerily. “And? Cheeseburgers for dinner.”
“Cheeseburgers for dinner,” Pepper hummed and looked at you, “How long did that take?”
“I folded like a pizza slice…” You trailed off with a sigh. “Is that okay?”
Pepper smiled softly, “Yes, yes, of course it is. It’s been a long, long time since I’ve had your burgers. But —“
“I know either no bun or those sprouted whatever buns that look like they came from the ground. I remember,” You nodded.
Morgan made a face, “ew.”
“Agreed, kid,” You nodded along. “Regular buns for us.”
“Yay!” Morgan clapped her hands together, the drying batter making her hands stick together, “Messy.”
“Very messy, yeah.” Shangqi agreed and licked the batter of off his own fingers. “We should clean up.”
“Come on,” Pepper laughed and scooped up Morgan. “I’ll get her cleaned up while you two please clean my kitchen.”
Morgan hung over Pepper’s shoulders and stared at them, her eyes settling on Shangqi in an absolute death glare, “Don’t make the frosting without me!”
“We won’t,” You told her with a laugh while Shangqi frowned.
“Why did she glare at me?”
“I mean. Why wouldn’t she? You’re not Uncle Steeb,” You teased, making him cringe as he grabbed a paper towel and dampened it over the sink.
“She was close to him?” He asked.
You scoffed, “No, I don’t think so. I think she heard stories about the two of us, because, apparently, they told her everything about me so she grew up knowing about me, which means they must have mentioned Steve. But, no, I don’ think they were close or anything like that. It would be news to me.” You stood next to him and rinsed your hands under the water, “You think she hates you because you’re not Steve?”
“Maybe? I mean, he was your husband, and I’m this random guy no one knew about,” Shangqi said as he rung out the paper towel a bit and grabbed your chin so he could wipe chocolate off of your face. “Wouldn’t blame her for hating me. Or Pepper, even.”
“Well, Pepper knew who you were. I suspect she wasn’t saying anything to protect Morgan, in case we broke up before she met you.”
“Love the confidence,” he began. “You told her about me?”
“No, Bucky was spying on me and snitched on me to her months ago,” you laughed. “I told her when I finally returned a call to say I was going to visit.”
“Ah, that’s…good?”
You pursed your lips and reached up to cup his face, “I’ve been distant with everyone, you know that. I still would be if Dumb and Dumber didn’t invade my privacy. I love you. I brought you here to meet my family because I love you, and I know they like you too. Just trust me.”
“Fine, I’ll trust you….but just this once,” He teased.
You rolled your eyes, “Just this once, huh? Great.”

You both cleaned the kitchen together. By the time Morgan came barreling down the stairs shouting that she was ready to make the frosting. She started climbing up the counter where you offered a quick hand to get her up while she proclaimed she could do it herself. Shangqi gave her the measuring cups and asked her if she wanted to help him measure out all the ingredients for you.  Of course she wanted to, and the two of them got to work following your recipe, Morgan slowly reading every single ingredient and measurement out before measuring with him.
It was adorable.
You leaned on the counter across from them, taking this time to rest after the long day you’ve already had. Sipping your water, you watched with a smile on your face as it dawned on you just how good Shangqi really is with children. It warmed your heart to see him smiling with Morgan, who was making faces, and clearly very confused as to why this adult man was purposely mispronouncing everything.
“Hey, be cool, man, we gotta make these right for mama,” Morgan declared.
Shangqi stifled a laugh, “I’m sorry, Morgan. I’ll be super serious from now on, how’s that?”
“Moderately serious,” She corrected him. “What is ‘shit ton powdered sugar’ ?”
Your eyes widened, “Oh, shit.”
Shangqi glanced at you and laughed, “You are…so terrible with this not cursing thing.”
You sputtered and looked at Morgan, “You didn't hear it from me. Okay? That’s….that’s what your mom says when she’s mad.”
Morgan smirked and nodded.
“Pepper heard you say it earlier, you know,” Shangqi reminded you.
You scoffed, “Whatever, Narc.”

Cupcakes were done. They were baked and set aside to cool while your frosting was put into the refrigerator for later. You made cheeseburgers for dinner, french fries, and teased Pepper when she made a salad to add ‘something healthy’ to the damage you were all going to do to your intestines with this dinner and dessert combo.
The four of you ate together, you watching Morgan to see how she’d enjoy the burger. It reminded you of Tony a little bit, the big bites she’d take and how quickly the burger would disappear. Her legs would kick in the air happily as she ate, saying it was as good as ‘daddy said it was,’ and she’d use both hands to bring her cup of juice to her lips, staring at you as she chugged her drink.
“I wish daddy was here,” she said softly, staring at you with a look that felt like it was piercing your soul.
You were stunned to hear this out of the blue. Your eyes immediately teared up and you took a deep breath as tears slipped down your cheeks. Pepper offered a kind smile to you as she reached over to rub Morgan’s back while Shangqi grabbed your hand under the table and gave it a squeeze.
“I do too, kiddo,” You nodded with a forced smile. “He was awesome.”
“Daddy’s crazy,” she told you.
You laughed and nodded, “He’s fucking crazy.”
Pepper let this f-bomb go as she reached across the table and squeezed your hand, “I’m sorry, (Y/N).”
You nodded, “It’s okay. Yeah, fuck the tears. Who needs feelings right now, right, kid?” You looked at Morgan. Your mannerisms and the way you spoke made her smile as she could totally see Tony in that moment. She slowly, then quickly nodded her head as she said she wanted to help frost the cupcakes.
Pepper and Shangqi cleaned up the table while you and Morgan got started on frosting the cupcakes. The four of you wound up frosting together eventually, and you all stood around the counter eating Pepper’s favorite cupcakes, Morgan quietly saying she was going to use these cupcakes to take over the world.
When you were all done, Pepper suggested you both go pick out a movie to watch saying that she’d clean up since you had done so much. Shangqi watched as Morgan led you to the sofa. You sat down in the corner and Morgan, with no regard for what you had wanted, sat on your lap and declared what movie she had wanted to see, which, funny enough, was exactly the movie you had been thinking of.
Shangqi smiled softly at the scene before turning away and helping Pepper in the kitchen. Pepper watched him through the corner of her eye. The smile never disappeared from his face as he cleaned dishes and never complained once.
“I like you for (Y/N),” Pepper declared quietly, surprising the young man who nearly dropped a plate in the sink.
“Uh, what? I mean, thank you. Thank you, Ms—Pepper.”
She cracked a smile and looked at you and Morgan before turning her attention back to your boyfriend, “You’re good for her. I worried that she’d shut out the possibility of love completely. Her dad was like that for so long, and she’s so much like him. When she ran away I figured that, maybe, I’d see her again in fifteen, twenty years when she finally felt a little better. I expected her to be single that whole time — we really thought Steve was it for her.”
“Right,”He nodded, a voice in the back of his head nagging him that he’s not Steve.
“But with you…” Pepper sighed happily, “I see her again. I can see that she’s still hurt, but I see who she was before everything with Thanos happened. I can see the way you look at her, Shangqi, and I see the way she looks at you. If Tony were here, he’d agree. He’d give you a hard time and bully you relentlessly, but it’d be because he liked you.”
“Hm, why does that sound so familiar?” He muttered as he glanced over in your direction and saw you half asleep on the sofa.
Pepper grinned, “Starks, they’re complicated, and crass, and ridiculous and so, so ostentatious, but they’ll love you more than you could ever know.”
Shangqi smiled brightly, “I love her more than I thought humanly possible, if that means anything to you.”
“It means a lot,” Pepper squeezed his shoulder. “It means I can rest a little easier now and know she’s taken care of, and she’s not alone.”
~*~
After they did the dishes together they joined you in the living room. You were half asleep and trying so hard to stay awake. Shangqi had tried to sit at one corner of the sofa, his idea that he’d give you and Morgan space.
Morgan glared at him, prompting him to give her a confused look. “You can’t sit over there if you’re going to be my future uncle, Shangqi. Duh.”
His eyebrows went up in surprise before he grinned. He stood up and moved over to sit beside you. Morgan now used him as a footrest, her body squished between the two of you, her head on his arm as he wrapped it around the back of the sofa to pull you in closer as well.
“Future uncle, huh?” He mused. “So am I passing your tests? Do you like me, Morgan?”
“We still have a week to go,” She reminded him flatly, which woke you up enough to laugh in his face while he sighed and stared at the ceiling. You Stark women were going to be the death of him. He loved it.
