Independent bookselling times are hard, though and Rais is unsure if the shop, established in 1974 – and that has endured almost five turbulent decades – can withstand the current challenges from the Taliban.
“Very few are buying books now,” he says sadly. One of the consequences of the Taliban takeover has been a mass exodus of intellectuals and others who were part of the book-buying demographic when UK and US forces were in situ in Afghanistan.
“I will keep the bookshop open as long as possible, maybe the Taliban will ban it or destroy it,” he shrugs.
Rais has lived through different rules in Afghanistan and was twice imprisoned during the Soviet era, first in 1979 for a year, and then again a year and a half after his release. He says he experienced torture and mistreatment while he was in jail, including sleep deprivation and being forced to live in freezing conditions.

Rais’s bookshop is believed to have the largest collection of books about Afghanistan, expressing a variety of different views of historical events, all under one roof. Along with textbooks for students in areas such as medicine, engineering and languages are many rare books that Rais has found safe hiding places for in case his shop is targeted.
“I have secure places in Iran and Pakistan for some of the books,” he says.
He speaks six languages and says regretfully that he has forgotten a seventh that he was previously able to speak – Russian.
After obtaining a master’s degree in civil engineering at Kabul University, he thought it would not be possible to make a living out of engineering and decided to try to turn his love of books, which he had developed as a teenager, into a business.
Along with his enormous and diverse collection of Afghan books he loves classics including works by Tolstoy, Balzac and Hemingway, and his favourite, the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi. “I loved reading Shakespeare’s Othello in Persian,” he says.

THE FORGOTTEN RULER, EPISODE 8
Thank you for your love and support towards the last blog. :) Special greetings to the new readers of my blog. Through this blog, I’ll tell you about my solo adventure to the famous yet unknown monument ’The Safdarjung Tomb’. My journey started early in the morning as I enjoyed the sunrise at Delhi Cantonment during my ride and finally reached Safdarjung Tomb.
The first thought that occurred to me after seeing the place was that it was some kind of haveli but little did I know what mysteries were waiting for me. As I moved a bit forward and was going to park my bike, I couldn’t believe my eyes! What beauty my eyes were witnessing!
The door was so beautifully decorated with hand paintings that were no less than a masterpiece. I couldn’t resist constantly staring at the beauty but as I moved further inside the big door, I saw this.
The tomb was at its best as the first rays of sunrise were directly falling on the tomb. Right now, it looked like the tomb was made up of solid gold. The exteriors of the tomb have 4 fountains and attached to the fountains are 4 small yet beautiful gardens. The gardens are so beautiful that they don’t even feel real.
As I moved closer to the tomb, I saw a big staircase leading towards the entrance of the minaret and the tomb. As I reached the top I saw a big entrance which was made of brownish-red stone and a layer of white marble. And on the top was a structure similar to the famous Red Fort.
The craftsmanship of the monument is so perfect that there is not even one wrongly cut stone. Leaving the architecture, the thing that excited me was the Arabic inscription.
According to my research, the inscription said, “When the hero of plain bravery departs from the transitory, may he become a resident of god’s paradise”. Isn’t the saying so beautiful? Further, I climbed the big stairs which led me to the tomb.
After seeing the elegance of the stone tomb, I thought my eyes were playing tricks with me. Until I looked up, you wouldn’t believe what I saw!! The ceiling of the tomb was designed in such a way that it resembled a flower which also had a place for a chandelier.
I also noticed some holes in the poles of the monument and also a closed upper part and the underground part. As per my research, the holes are the air vent to the original tomb of Safdarjung and his wife. Both the upper part and the lower part have never been opened to the public. I wonder what are they hiding in there?
I have heard that the premises also have a small library but sadly it was closed when I reached there. As I was leaving, I saw a big closed door, I somehow sneaked inside (don’t tell the Ministry of Archaeology). Behind the big door was an old fountain kind of thing which led to a big domed mosque but all the entrances of the mosque were sadly sealed.

The place is so beautiful that I didn’t want to leave and go back home. But sadly, all the good things have an end. As I returned I did some research about the place. Here are some of my findings. Built-in 1754 by Shauja-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awadh, to house the remains of his father Safdarjung, who was a powerful minister in the Mughal court during the reign of Muhammad Shah, the tomb is referred to as the “last flicker in the lamp of Mughal architecture.” The mosque, which used to attract a large number of devotees in the earlier days, is relevant from a visitor’s perspective now. Regular prayers are not offered at this mosque as it has been declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Conspiracy against Siraj or against the Bengalis of 2000
Is the existence of the people of Bengal really critical? I just want find the answer of this question. What I think at the moment is that the British monarchy (in the language of anthropologists, one of the most intelligent people in the world) might not have been able to hatch such a long and cunning conspiracy. History comes back again and again. We have to look back a little to AD 1750-1858 to see whether we are really in crisis or not. The period is considered as the first retreat of the Bengali nation. Although very oblique, it is very true. Let's see who tried to erase Siraj? Why did they move? The intentions of those who conspired against Siraj were not so much to overthrow Siraj but to weaken the Bengali nation economically and administratively (as indicated by the restoration of Fort William by the British). This means that Bengalis will not sit on the porch of any power. The funny thing is that except for one of those who wanted it, everyone else is non-Bengali. Mir Zafar, the army chief of Siraj (Commander-in-Chief) did this conspiracy out of greed for subah of Bengal, but why did Mir Bakshi, Yar Lutuf Khan, Amir Chand, Jagat Seth, Rai Durlav and Maharaja Krishnachandra get involved in this conspiracy? All of them were members of the Banik (merchant in today's language) community and also non-Bengali, except Krishnachandra. Maharaja Krishnachandra, a merchant, although he belonged to the Nadia dynasty but still he was basically a merchant (this information may not be known to many). So naturally a question arises why the conspiracy was supposed to have taken place between the subadars or the generals, ministers, bureaucrats or the royal merchants instead of the merchants? To put it bluntly, non-Bengali merchants from both Hindu (universally known) and Muslim communities were involved in this conspiracy. So who did the main person involved in such a nasty conspiracy? If we accept the imposed history, then the question arises, where did the British hit? Again, because of the same imposed history, if we accept that the main objective of the British then was to occupy Bengal in various ways, then why the same question arises? A closer look reveals that trade was the main reason behind this. In fact, the hinterland of Bengal, in commercial terms, was alluring. That is why the soil of Bengal is such an important background even today. The geographical location of this united Indian state is a place from which many countries can be caught. So if the Siraj could not be defeated or removed, then the domination of this place would not be achieved. So with the help of the British monarchy Abu'l Muzaffar Muin ud-din Muhammad Shah Farrukh-siyar and forced to accept the regulation Which Siraj did not accepted. He could not think of the common people of Bengal because if the agreement (this article will be too long to explain the agreement) will indirectly aggravate the suffering of the common people of Bengal, small traders will lose their freedom, they will have to do business like the East India Company which will result in the collapse of Bengal economy. When the people of Bengal became financially weak, in the end the opponents of Siraj gained, and so did the battle of Palashi.
Simply analyse the facts the past. So why I am talking today about the past? I am talking about the reason that we can see the shadow of that past again. Only with the passage of time has the character and the way of working of the characters changed, everything else remains the same. Therefore, the desire to re-occupy Bengal in various ways is the same as before. It is mainly by non-Bengalis. There are a couple of Bengalis who have participated in that sacrifice. Above all, the purpose is the same, to occupy the land of Bengal for commercial reasons. The history of this occupation is also quite long. After Siraj, the non-Bengali merchants did not give up even though they could not get along with the British East India Company in any way. This time again saw the rise of some Bengali entrepreneurs. Some of them were seen throwing challenges to the British merchants. Notable names of that time are Raghuram Goswami, Motilal Shil, Ramdulal Dey, PM Bagchi, Digambar Mitra, Pitram Das Mar, Dwarkanath Tagore and others. Interestingly, although the British arrived in India from the west, the British thought that the Bengalis were a nation educated and intelligent in trade. As a result, the Bengali merchants who were being beaten by the British and non-Bengalis during Siraj's time (ie their next generation) again turned to the generosity of the British. As a result, the dream of non-Bengali merchants to occupy Bengal remained elusive. But they kept biting the ground thinking about the future. Post-British India means divided Bengal. They were a bit broken by this but with the last of their power they did not allow the whole of Bengal to become East Pakistan and propagated that the Bengalis do not know how to do business. In order to weaken the newly afflicted nation financially, they brought some Bengalis in their hands with the bait of money and then gradually the result of what they did is being understood by the Bengalis today. The money earned from this is being invested in Rajasthan Gujarat (I can name a few companies whose money earned from Bengal is investing in their homeland instead of investing in Bengal.) That is, Bengal has no future, Bengal is a bad place, Bengalis are unemployed
(Yet are you a Bengali! Why? For what? For what purpose?). The bottom line is that the only purpose is to get the Bengali nation out of business. To take a look at one thing, every foreign product that enters or goes abroad in India has an agent. No matter the transaction through that agent, he will get the deduction for import or export of any product (I will not go into details anymore). Some Bengalis are getting cut off from the products that Bangladesh is exporting and importing from India. This is the anger of non-Bengalis. Their question is why Bengalis get it, they deserve it (I mean, let's say a product, I can mention the name of the company or the name of the trading company while holding the product but I didn't, entered India or imported. Import means through an agent who is a non-Bengali) The same product is sold in Bangladesh then it is exported. This time it is exported again by a Bangladeshi agent or a Bengali agent from West Bengal. They do not want to accept this. Or it has to be a non-Bengali organization, whether it is Bangladesh or India, which means they will eat the whole profit - which means on the one hand, the financial ruin of the Bengali nation). And that's why it's so dramatic. This is one of the aspects of the financial crisis, there are many other aspects that no one brings publicly. Ordinary people do not have a headache, they do not want to know because they know how much! And this benefit is being looted by one class. And I will write another article later about the social crisis which is deadlier. Chandril Babu may make me weep for the Bengalis (Bengalis are always weeping in their language that conspiracy is being hatched against them, Bengalis are always deprived - is that wrong Chandril Babu?) Without knowing or remembering the history of Bengal and without understanding this game base of trade. There is no such thing as Bengali media, so the media has come down to catch fish in this murky water. Some Bengalis are also helping the non-Bengali traders. Now the question is when the history of Bengal will be written again tomorrow, why and how Bengali became without Bengali (there are many aspects to review with)! Or why the Bengali nation, despite being such a large population, is almost extinct, a lot (like Anglo-Saxons and Jews) then what will be the name of these treacherous Bengalis? Do they ever think that they are killing their own people to satisfy petty interests? Won't their grandchildren abuse them? Mir Zafar is still alive today with the strong hatred of the people of Bengal, will they be able to bear that survival? Or even if they die, even after death, disrespect! If you think, you have to get up in a hurry. However, it seems that some Bengalis are desperate to hand over the land of Bengal to non-Bengalis. This is the greatest misfortune of the nation. This is the greatest proof that history use to come back again and again. Now it remains to be seen whether the non-Bengalis will be able to occupy Bengal by trickery again and again because this time they have almost handcuffed the whole process of occupation. The rest is the future of Bengal, the destiny of Bengal.

The beautiful structure was designed by Muhammad Hasan-e-Memar and Muhammad Reza Kashi Paz-e-Shirazi.

Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar chaired a meeting at his office to review the launch of the environment-friendly electric tramway project. The elevated expressway project from Gulberg to Motorway M-2 was also deliberated upon by the participants. The CM directed to start it on a priority basis as it would help travellers' access to motorway while decreasing traffic burden at Canal Road and Multan Road. The elevated expressway would pass through Canal Bank Road, Jail Road, Ferozepur Road, Multan Road, Bund Road to Babu Sabu. Interchanges would be constructed at Canal Bank Road, Jail Road, Ferozepur Road, Multan Road and Bund Road, he added. DG LDA briefed about the project.

Provincial Minister Syed Sumsam Ali Bukhari, Rai Muhammad Murtaza Iqbal MNA and PTI leader Rai Hassan Nawaz called on Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar at his office and discussed matters of mutual interest. Principal Secretary to CM was also present.
Talking on the occasion, CM Usman Buzdar pointed out that every district has been given a development package to ensure composite development. The PTI government has set a new example of public service during the last three years; he said and emphasised that the opponents could not compare their 30-year long black era with PTI's 3-year bright era. Not a single scandal of this government has come to light; whereas stories of corruption came to light every day in the past, he maintained. The former rulers abused resources relentlessly for personal projection; he further said and regretted that the politics of propaganda is the usual modus operandi of the opposition. He repeated that the vision of equitable development was being ensured in the new Pakistan. LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar went to the shrine of the Poet of East Sir Dr Allama Muhammad Iqbal and laid floral wreath and prayed for the development and progress of the country and nation.
The Chief Minister paid a rich tributes to great philosopher Allama Iqbal. Khateeb Badhsahi Mosque Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad offered to pray.

Expresses grief over
incident of cylinder blast in a marriage ceremony
Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar has expressed a deep sense of sorrow and grief over the incident of cylinder blast in a marriage ceremony in district Kohlu Balochistan.
The Chief Minister assured the Balochistan government for all possible support in providing treatment for the injured children. On the directions of Usman Buzdar, 18 injured have been shifted to DHQ Hospital D.G. Khan whereas eight critical injured have been sent to the Multan Burn Centre.
On the instructions of Chief Minister Punjab district administration and officials of the Health Department inquired after injured children and reviewed the medical facilities being provided them.
Usman Buzdar directed to provide best treatment facilities to the injured children. These are our children and no stone will be left unturned in providing the best treatment to them, he asserted.
CM grieved over demise of minister’s brother
Sardar Usman Buzdar has expressed a deep sense of sorrow and grief over the sad demise of Syed Faiz ul Hassan Shah brother of Minister Auqaf and Religious Affairs, Syed Saeed ul Hassan Shah.
Usman Buzdar extended heartfelt sympathies and condolence with bereaved family members and prayed that may Allah Almighty rest the departed soul in eternal peace and grant courage and strength to the heirs to bear this irreparable loss with fortitude.

🕉 🚩 ☪️🇮🇳⠀ ⠀ Pavagadh Mahakali Mandir cum Sadanshah Pir Dargah It was on a November day in 1484 AD that Champaner, a prestigious kingdom 160 km from Vadodara, popularly known as Baroda in Gujarat, fell to Muhammad Shah the Sultan of Ahmedabad. He had planned and tried to capture Champaner several times before, but had found the fortress called Pavagadh to be invincible. Moreover, he had as a courtier one Sadanshah Faqir, alias Sahadev Joshi, a Brahmin turned Muslim. The Faqir kept the rajah of Champaner, Pavapati Jaisinh Dev informed of the sultan’s moves. He had changed his faith merely to be acceptable Into Muhammad Shah. This legend was confirmed by the book called Rai Benirai by Ramesh Joshi, Gujarat Pustakalaya, Vadodara, 1995.⠀ ⠀ That November day, however, the sultan’s army was able to storm the fort of Champaner. The decisive factor was the treachery of Jaisinh Dev’s brother-in-law SaiyanVankalio who showed the way to break in. The rajahs of Sirohi and Idar are believed to have helped Muhammad Shah according to Ramesh Joshi.⠀ ⠀ Although they were allies of the Muslim sultan, they did not abandon their loyalty to goddess Mahakali whose temple had, for centuries, crowned the Pavagadh hill that overlooked the city of Champaner. Even on the evening of their victory, they did not forgett to go up to the temple to get a darshan of the Mahakali. Sadanshah Faqir was waiting for them. He had feared that in the aftermath of victory, the sultan would come up the hill to see the legendary temple and its deity. Seorang bayi berusia 55 hari meninggal dunia selepas hidungnya berdarah ketika tidur di sebuah taska di Seksyen 7, Shah Alam, Selasa lalu, lapor Harian Metro.
Bapanya, Mohd Shazwan Mohd Yusoff, 34, berkata, dia dan isteri tidak tahu punca sebenar kematian anaknya, Muhammad Rais Hafiy Mohd Shazwan, namun reda dengan ketentuan itu.
"Walaupun tidak tahu punca sebenar kematiannya, kami sekeluarga reda dengan hanya sempat ‘dipinjamkan’ Allah selama 55 hari," katanya.
Menurutnya, ketika kejadian dia dan isteri baru pulang dari tempat kerja dan mahu mengambil dua lagi anak mereka iaitu Muhammad Raziq, 3, dan Muhammad Rais Hafiy, kira-kira jam enam petang.
"Melihat hidung Rais berdarah ketika tidur dan tidak sedarkan diri, kami segera membawanya ke hospital untuk pemeriksaan lanjut. Namun, Allah lebih menyayanginya," katanya.
Mohd Shazwan dan keluarga masih terkejut kerana bayi itu baru sehari dihantar ke pusat jagaan tersebut.
"Pada malam kejadian, isteri (Nurul Ashikin Ahmad Rithauddin, 29) hanya tidur sejam berikutan terlalu bimbang dan berasa tidak sedap hati untuk menghantar Rais ke taska. Namun, isteri perlu berada di pejabat berikutan menguruskan kerja yang tertanggung ketika cuti berpantang sebelum ini,” katanya.
Walau bagaimanapun, Mohd Shazwan tidak menyalahkan taska berkenaan kerana laporan bedah siasat menunjukkan tiada sebarang kesan lebam dan kecederaan pada anaknya itu.
"Bagaimanapun, kami perlu menunggu keputusan sampel hasil ujian yang sudah dihantar ke makmal untuk mengenalpasti punca kematian. Doktor memaklumkan ia akan diperoleh dalam tempoh sebulan dan kami kini tidak boleh menuding jari kepada sesiapa," katanya.
Jenazah Allahyarham disembahyangkan selepas Zuhur di Masjid Ar-Rayyan, Seksyen 7 sebelum dikebumikan di Tanah Perkuburan Islam Seksyen 21, kelmarin.
Sementara itu, Ketua Polis Daerah Shah Alam Asisten Komisioner Shafien Mamat mengesahkan kejadian dan berkata siasatan masih dijalankan pihaknya.
