This is Tanzanite Foresight from the Stone Dragon series, which I finished in 2018.
This was a fun and slightly silly piece. The original design had circular shapes around the horn that were meant to read as "unicorn power" or somesuch, but they ended up looking like bubbles. So I said, sure, let's just run with that. MOAR BUBBLES! And lo, bubbles everywhere.
The dragon was done with ink, watercolor, Prismacolor pencil, and silver paint pen. There are tiny shiny bits in the middle of each diamond that are hard to see here. There's a Fuze-Glass bauble by the front knees.
The background... whoooeee... The background is scrapbook paper, and layered onto that is a conglomeration (perhaps even a congeries) of holographic film, sequins, acrylic and glass "raindrops", glass tiles, "black goldstone" (which is regular goldstone with a different chemical treatment during manufacture), shell beads, and a whole lotta shiny bits. In the upper right corner is a labradorite stone. It came out green in the scan, but when the light hits it the schiller matches the overall color scheme perfectly.

The painting is done. It is currently in the process of being flattened, I don’t want to take pictures until it’s flat so it won’t be warped. It’s far too nice an artwork to share photographs of it warped.
#it’s so much better than I’d even hoped#like. first time ever painting a portrait of any sort I was not expecting it to be great#especially since it’s *watercolour*#but I really like how it looks#for the finishing touches I even brought out my little sample sheet of super fancy watercolours#so I put the final touches on the portrait with paints made of semiprecious stones. fitting for the character I think.#there’s some lapis lazuli in there. some bits of shading in his hair were done with black tourmaline.#the shading in his eyes was done—very fittingly—with bloodstone. hell there’s even a little *garnet* in there.#the full list is far longer. there’s a veritable rock collection in that painting.#I think the darling vampire twink would approve.#so many hours of work though… something like 18 hours I think?#my entire body is fucking screaming from all that time kneeling hunched on the floor while I worked#but it was worth it. I love how this has turned out.

Hilarious to me that AliExpress will misinterpret my interest in their various (and counterintuitively named) “yoni wands”. I keep staring at them because I’m wondering how insane it would be to message one of those vendors and ask them to whittle one of the prettier amethyst or rose quartz… “wands” into a hair stick.

This is a seriously underexploited aesthetic. Like yes crystals are all the rage and we've seen salt rock lamps, and there's a French designer doing some cool stuff with lighting forced through prisms of imperfect stone
but I feel like there is SO MUCH MORE OUT THERE to do!
I like all the crystal suncatchers out there, except that the crystals are SO SHINY that every so often a concentrated beam of light meanders directly into your retina. They need to learn to chill out a bit.

This is Sun Dazzled, a commissioned piece of the dragon Sun, which I made for a Tumblr friend @sundragon. He is gold and shiny, and has macaw feathers: definitely a winning combination (and fun to color)!
This is the first time I have used my layering and 3D elements techniques on a 5x7 project format. I think this worked out well, and I plan to start making more pieces of this size.
The dragon was rendered with Prismacolor pencils and metallic gel pens. There is watercolor, scrapbook paper, glass tiles, assorted shiny bits, and Fuze glass (the pink/red round thing below the dragon). There is also a blue shattukite stone in front of the dragon's face, and he holds a piece of turquoise/copper composite. There are also some goldstone cabs along the upper right corner.

As a rock hound and semiprecious stone nerd, i can't stop thinking about the aesthetic consequences of Ashton's decision to turn themselves into a walking volcano.
Preliminary fanart suggests that the new arm is black volcanic glass with magma ribbons, which makes sense. But consider: If Ashton is a Genasi made of Jade-like stone, as they heated up the left side of their body would not automatically be immune to the heat. When you superheat Jade, it darkens dramatically. The veins in their skin could be gold, but could also be pyrite, which is considerably stronger than gold. The fun thing about pyrite is that it tarnishes beautifully. And, fun fact! If you superheat amethyst, it turns into "synthetic" citrine.
So imagine - Ashton takes in the shard of Rau'shan, he begins to superheat, their glossy green skin begins to darken and crack and blister. The scrolling ribbons of fool's gold around their joints and ligaments begin to blister and crystallize into craggy dark rainbows among hot, smoky swirls of blackened jade. One arm falls off, and one ear, then pieces of their chest, their abdomen - all replaced with slick obsidian glass and fresh ribbons of boiling red magma. And their hair, once violet and shot through with rainbows, is amber-dark like whiskey, frosted at the roots.
From a geological perspective, Ashton just went from This -

So does the split down the middle look cool? Absolutely. Do I think the heat affecting every part of Ashton, not just his right side, is even more badass? Yeah, I do actually. Their color palette just got much more interesting. So, enjoy that.
