Shadowdark West Marches - Introduction

Hello all! I've decided that I'm going to start blogging about my Shadowdark West Marches game that I run as a means of keeping a log of the game. This will help me keep track of things as well as share the experience with people outside of the game!

This first post will serve as an introduction to the world the game takes place in.

The World

Our adventure takes place in my homebrew of Sil'Den, but more specifically on the continent of Eros. The world is a Dark Fantasy setting filled with undead, warring cities, dragons, and much more! The fun hook that is present in this world is that it takes place after a death defying event called the Forsakening. Essentially, the gates to the Underworld have closed, preventing the souls of the dead to move on. With nowhere to go these souls return to their bodies, beginning a horrible process that alters and resurrects their corpse. Many of the creatures born of this process are just simple reanimated bodies, but sometimes the event of "Returning" can mutate the body and soul into a more horrifying creature.

With all this chaos across the land, there begins a huge plague of undeath. Cities have to closely survey their citizens to ensure the undead don't begin killing those within their walls, everywhere outside of the cities are dangerous, and this impacts the connections between various civilizations as they resort to hiding away from the rest of the world. This is where our heroes come in, the Exorcists of the Absolvist Church.

Though many of the characters do not follow the goddess known as The Absolver, the church dedicated to her is one of the only forces attempting to do something about the returned. People from across Eros have made their way to the holy city of Phoeden to lend themselves to fighting against the undead enemy, all the while gaining fame and fortune from their travels. What the characters of this game are slowly realizing is that the undead are just one of the many problems lurking about outside the city walls.

It is up to the Exorcists to restore balance by reestablishing alliances between cities, destroying the returned, burning the bodies of the freshly slain to prevent their bodies from returning, plundering ruins to hopefully find clues pointing to a solution to the Forsakening, and much more!

This Blog

I'll be posting various blogs telling the tale of the Exorcists, but obviously it's a bit difficult to promise I'll post about every single one. I'll refer to character names only, keeping my players' identities anonymous. However if you're interested in getting more involved in the West Marches, I'm still taking applications HERE

Expect these posts maybe once or twice a week? No promises though, I'm already busy with running the game as well as University. I'll also probably name future posts after the campaign name which is "Bleeding Light"! Anyways, Hades signing off!
