Fall of the House of Usher: Jumpscares
SPOILERS AHEAD! (duh)
i love all things mike flanagan, but i’m a big chicken, so jumpscares really freak me out. so for everyone else out there who is equally as freaked out by them as me, here is a list with timestamps of all of the jumpscares in the show! some timestamps might be a few seconds off, but i did my best. enjoy!
i’ll update as i finish episodes!
Episode 1: A Midnight Dreary
0:29 Creepy, not necessarily too jumpy
0:53 Creepy again, could jumpscare you if your volume is up
17:04 After debating whether to call a doctor, their mother appears behind young Roderick in the lightning flashes
20:18 Not a jumpscare, but so so creepy. After older Roderick tells Dupin that his mother is right behind him, the detective goes on a rant about interrogation techniques. When the camera jumps back to show the room behind him, the mother is standing there, perfectly still. At 20:50, she leaves. 
51:00 Not a jumpscare, but creepy. All of the dead children stand on the balcony where the woman in the mask just was. They’re all visibly bloody and dead. 
51:59 First real jumpscare of the season. A clown in the backseat of the taxi? Scary af
Episode 2: The Masque of the Red Death
4:02 Not a jumpscare, but really creepy. Roderick falters before he can finish his sentence, and then the ghost of Prospero appears behind Dupin. He’s gone a moment later. 
19:43 He’s back. He approaches this time.
20:33 Real jumpscare this time. Thunder crashes and we cut to a closeup of Prospero’s deformed face. Dupin doesn’t even notice anything. 
56:00 Not a jumpscare, just really gross
Episode 3: Murder in the Rue Morgue
2:00 Immediately very nasty. Lots of shots of the dead bodies from the party, all decayed and gross. 
3:16 Minor jumpscare, one of the bodies isn’t quite dead and grabs Pym’s ankle. There’s a music cue with it. Kind of expected to be honest. 
24:33 Roderick freezes. A pair of blackened hands appear on his shoulders, and we cut to a shot that reveals a dead Camille is standing over him.
25:35 Real jumpscare. As Roderick is going on his little rant, he pours himself another drink. When he turns back to Dupin, Camille is in front of him, along with a music cue. He throws his glass. 
36:59 The cat is dead!! Oh no!! Napoleon follows the trail of blood to find Pluto has been stabbed. Fortunately for all animal lovers, it’s a very fake looking cat.
50:47 Jumpscare. A monkey slams against the bars of its cage behind Camille. 
Chimps pretty much are just slamming against the bars repeatedly through this scene. Beware!
Episode 4: The Black Cat
This is a very gory episode! Beware!
24:50 Leo lifts his pillow to reveal a dead rat(?) with a big musical cue
26:30 Big jumpscare! As Roderick is saying “pour your energy into kickbox-“ Leo’s body falls from the ceiling and hits the floor. It’s accompanied by a loud musical cue.
Majority of this episode is just this cat terrorizing Leo, so there’s a lot of small dead animals. Beware!
47:50 Shit gets crazy. Leo hurts the cat after it attacks him, and then the scary lady (Veena) looks super gory. 
53:53 After Roderick unties Juno’s robe, a burnt Perry appears behind her, then leans into Roderick’s face. 
57:23 When Leo breaks down the final section of the wall, the cat and Veena are there, both with an eye hanging out and pretty gross.
Episode 5: The Tell Tale Heart
5:19 The camera pans in front of Roderick to see Perry’s burnt ghost in front of him. A moment later, Roderick looks up into the balcony to see the clown. 
6:40 Roderick turns around to look back at the coffins and sees the ghosts of all three of the “bastards” standing in front of their respective coffins. 
24:12 After Dupin starts bleeding, he looks up at the ceiling, and when he looks back down, he is instead Vic. She starts screaming, but at a crack of thunder, it returns to normal. 
53:30 After this point, it gets pretty gory as we see Ali dying. 
55:09 This part is pretty horrific. Roderick opens the door to reveal Ali’s dead body. The room is covered with blood and we get some close ups of the machine in her heart. It’s very gross. 
57:05 Vic turns the scissors on herself and stabs herself. 
Episode 6: Goldbug
2:04 Not a jumpscare, but we see someone in the doorway in Tamerlane’s hallway. 
4:06 When Tamerlane opens the Goldbug box, it’s filled with maggots(?) and bloody stuff. She jumps away, accompanied by a musical cue. 
7:07 After Roderick says “Don’t all answer at once” the camera cuts to show the four dead children watching him. 
16:04 After Roderick asks “Can you see them too?” Lenore turns around and the four dead kids are behind her. 
25:21 As Roderick says “Isn’t it all just water under the-“ the window behind him is shattered and he flies forward. While laying on the ground, Tammy steps towards him, then stands over him all creepy like. It’s done when Dupin says “Roderick?”
50:53 From this point forward, it gets mildly bloody, with Tammy cutting herself on some glass. 
52:54 After “Before the inevitable” a hand reaches out and grabs Tammy around her ankle. 
Episode 7: The Pit and the Pendulum
18:00 Not a jumpscare or even scary, but the implications of what is about to happen are fucking brutal. My stomach dropped. We don’t watch what happens (thank fuck) but we do see the aftermath, and it is gory. 
23:26 The clock chimes. Scared the poop out of me because it was unexpected. 
25:28 Freddy gets all terrifying? Honestly the only way to explain it. After Annabel talks for a moment, young Freddy’s body splits in half. 
Episode 8: The Raven
2:34 Holy shit jumpscare. It’s the fucking clown again. There’s a metallic clinking sound, and when Roderick turns, the clown jumps out and grabs him. 
10:48 Not a jumpscare, but when Annabel turns and walks away, there’s a bloody hole in the back of her head. 
12:50 Repeat of the clown jumpscare from the first episode. 
51:56 Not a major jumpscare, but a crash of thunder is accompanied by a musical cue that’s a little startling. 
52:36 During a flash of lightning, Lenore’s ghost appears behind Roderick. It continues to move closer as he turns. 
53:05 The raven squawks loudly as it flies by Roderick. 
54:34 After Roderick says “Haven’t we?” there’s a crash of thunder and when he turns around, all of his dead family members are sitting around the conference table. 
1:06:36 After Roderick says “I bet I still could’ve sold it” Madeline bursts out of the basement all bloody and gross.

I kind of love when a piece of media that is not Horror has an episode of just part of it that delves into horror. What are some of your favorite moments of horror in otherwise non-horror media?
Oh that is absolutely my shit, I love the jarringly serious or terrifying episodes of otherwise fairly lighthearted shows. The ones that spring to mind for me are
Haunted (Teen Titans 2003, season 3 episode 5), the absolute most fucked up episode of that entire series - I like it better than the actual "what they fear" episode where it turned out Raven's powers were going haywire and making everyone's phobias real, because the explanation for this is MUCH more fucked and the horror is the much more grounded "am I going crazy or are all my friends gaslighting me"
Alone Against A.I.M (Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, season 2 episode 2), AIM locks down the tower and unleashes a nanobot monster that wants to eat the arc reactor that powers Tony's heart. Very much a "Die Hard But In [X]" plot.
Predatory (Transformers: Prime, season 1 episode 12), a classic "the most dangerous game" plotline except the hapless hero is being hunted by a thirty-foot spider dominatrix robot. Watching this episode with no context is what convinced me to watch the entire rest of the show
Identity Crisis part 1 and 2 (ReBoot, season 1 episode 12-13), aka "the fucked up clown one". Gave me honest-to-god nightmares as a kid for a multitude of reasons, and if you're looking for it, contains a lot of delightful foreshadowing of what happens in season 3
The Puppetmaster (Avatar: The Last Airbender, season 3 episode 8), the halloween episode in a setting without halloween, starts with sharing ghost stories and goes significantly downhill from there
Perchance To Dream (Batman: The Animated Series, season 2 episode 30), an unusual case where it was intended to be his heart's desire, but Bruce Wayne is too fucked up to trust his dreams coming true. Honorable mention to Over The Edge (season 4 episode 12) for showing Barbara Gordon's worst nightmare in a much more standard way
Legends (Justice League season 1 episodes 18-19), the most absolutely depressing way they could've possibly incorporated the "meeting the golden age heroes" plot from the classic Flash Of Two Worlds comic. Looks like it's gonna be sunshine, cotton candy and casual 50s racism and misogyny before it turns out to be a full-on I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream situation. Honorable mention to Only A Dream (season 2 episodes 5-6) for being a more classic What They Fear scenario.

Chenford REWIND- Lucy Chen / Tim Bradford - The Rookie - Season 5 - Ep 2, 3 & 4
Sitting here in a slight bit of disbelief that I'm writing another one so soon, but there have been pockets of time that have opened up in my life, and I'm going to take advantage before I run out, again!
Combining a little, here, because where we had 19 minutes plus of screen time in Episode 1, the number goes down considerably for a few episodes to off-set and focus on some other story lines/characters.
SPOILER ALERT: While I'm primarily writing these as though I were watching the episode for the first time, I will definitely spoil these episodes and MAYBE a little more (there ARE some nice points to reference as we go forward). Consider yourself forewarned!
Can Tim and Lucy untangle the mess of last episode's impulsive near-boinkfest? Let's dive in to find out.
Labor Day
"I'm positive your Sergeant will approve it?" "Yeah, he would, for sure. It's just, um, I have some things going on in my personal life right now."
There is so much to unpack, here. Let's start with Lucy's absolute surety that Tim would approve her going to the Undercover Academy.
When she first thought about pursuing Under Cover, Tim was totally against it. Yes, he has his own history regarding his ex-wife, but he also wasn't sure that Lucy could handle it.
Obviously, he under-estimated her, and he's repeatedly remarked on her doing a good job every time. "Not bad." "I thought she needed rescuing." "You're really good at this." Tim will approve it. No question.
The second is "I have some things going on in my persona life". Because, Chris immediately assumes he's the only roadblock to her happiness, at this point (and, Chris, honey, you are a roadblock... just not the one you think you are).
If you watch to the end of the episode, though, this isn't the only thing on her mind. Tim is, too. Not Sergeant Bradford, but Tim... the man.
They didn't get to finish their moment, and there's no way to take it back. In the flash of a moment, Lucy had to acknowledge her cheating ways and then register that the man she was cheating on was dying on her couch.
And what if that drove Tim away forever? What if that was her only chance, and now it's gone. What if it could have meant something, but she'll never have the chance to know?
Yeah... this is messy.
"How's Lucy?"
Hold the phone right there. Angela is asking Tim Bradford about Lucy.
In the past (especially post DOD), it was always Tim asking others about Lucy. He was the one on the outside who wasn't as close. Now, he's the mouthpiece for Lucy's state of being... and that's huge.
Tim has been in contact with Lucy. Maybe a call, but more likely text messages. But, however he's done it, he's been the one to check on her directly instead of going through someone else.
"Are you checking up on me" is now Tim reaching out to Lucy about Lucy. And that's huge.
"Uh, she's still a little shaken. Taking some time to get Chris settled." "Remind me what you were doing at her apartment... when you found Chris bleeding out."
Hermana! You are not giving this man any leeway and I am living for it!
Look, gossip gets around, but Angela's the only one who knows Tim's caught feelings for Lucy. It's unlikely any of the others would think Tim, who never stops seeing his Boots as Boots, would even consider boinking a Boot.
But Angela's different. She knows her Man of Honor better than most, and she has a feeling there's a reason behind Tim's presence in Lucy's apartment. "Search your feelings, you know it to be true."
"Just dropping her off after we got back from Vegas."
He leans into the truth. Honestly, that's the best thing you can do in a situation like that. But he knows she is fishing and he is hoping she will bite onto his lure away from the truth.
"Mmhmm."
Yeah, she's not biting, Tim.
"What are you implying?" "What do you think?" "I was just dropping her off." "Mmhmm."
Tim narrows his eyes at her, frustrated that she's now going along with his half-truth. Because, for goodness sake, this is messy.
Imagine Tim and Lucy don't get interrupted and they go through with it. Who would ever know? Tim goes his way. Lucy goes hers.
And then they'd have to deal with the inevitable emotional fall-out... but neither of them was thinking past that moment. They certainly never thought they'd have to explain it to others!
A Knock At The Door
Melissa O'Neil has some beautiful physicality to this scene, as she leans up to look out the peephole and sees Tim standing there. Gosh, is that indicative of her life, right now.
She has Chris. He's right here on her couch. But she wants Tim, and all she can do is glimpse him from outside her world. He's right there, but he's not inside... He's back on the other side of that threshold.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" "Just checking in. How you feeling?"
Look. At. Lucy. Her face screams, "Are you seriously doing this?!" This is likely the first time she's seen him since that horrible moment... the first time she's seen him wearing his own clothes and rocking his own hair (slicked back Tim was sleezy, I'm just sayin').
"Lucy's taking great care of me." "I have no doubt."
Tim's voice is so soft on this. I'll later come to identify it as his Velvety Voice... because he's talking about Lucy, the natural caretaker. The one who watches out for others. The one who sends food to her TO to help expedite his recovery.
Lucy is a beautiful caretaker, and a part of him wishes he was the one receiving her affection, right now.
Everything in him is aching to reach for her to offer comfort, right now, because he can see she is hurting. But his hands are firmly in his pockets, and have been since the second he stopped knocking.
"Can we talk?" "Yeah, sure."
He motions his head to the hallway, drawing her back out, across her own threshold. His voice is almost hesitant, and she doesn't know what they might discuss, but I think they both know their "almost" is going to come up.
She leaves the door open, probably to keep herself in check. And as she steps out, she and Tim are now standing in almost exactly the same positions as the last time they saw one another... standing at a threshold prepared to go in.
But, now they've both stepped back out.
"So, I, uh, I hear you're on the fence about going to UC school." "Chris called you?" "Yeah, which was expected. He wanted me to talk to you."
I love his little smirk on that. Not so long ago, his girlfriend called Lucy, and she wasn't phased a bit. But this is different for Tim.
Tim has feelings for Lucy, and that's making things complicated enough in this moment. Now, her "work in progress" is calling him to get him to nudge Lucy in the right direction? Because Chris trusts Lucy will listen to Tim.
Tim is Lucy's person. Man, these people are so bloody dense.
Because Lucy is standing before the man she truly wants to be with, and she's aghast that her stand-in cardboard cut-out is reaching out to the leading hunk in her life.
"It's not the right time." "He's gonna be fine. You owe it to yourself to go." "I know, but-" "What happened to him isn't your fault."
This is important. We're hearkening back to post DOD when Lucy ensured Tim understood Caleb wasn't his fault. But, the problem is that Chris isn't the only thing on Lucy's mind.
"We were about to." "But we didn't. We didn't."
Tim's shaking his head as he's speaking, volume dropping to barely above a whisper, pain in the assertion. I've thought a lot about this... and Tim's trying to assuage Lucy's guilt. He thinks she feels guilty. He thinks that is what is holding her back. Guilt.
But Tim is as wrong about Lucy as she was about Tim when he tried to talk to her in the hotel room. Lucy has had time to think about everything that has happened, and even as she is nursing Chris back to health, she's been thinking about Tim.
Yes, in that moment, they were both going for sex. But, here's the thing, Lucy thinks she's revealed herself to Tim. She thinks he's onto her feelings for him. And right now, she's trying to have the same discussion he wanted to have in the hotel room.
But they have this bad habit of not listening and instead assuming.
"Are you trying to get rid of me as your Gofer?" "No. No. I'm trying to look out for you."
Listen to how Tim's voice breaks. Look at how his face crumples. This is killing him. But he truly believes Lucy feels guilty about what almost happened. Maybe he worries his conversation in the hotel pressured her in some way.
But no matter what, he doesn't believe for a second that Lucy Chen has feelings for him.
He's had time to think this over, and over, and over. And every time he comes to the conclusion that she doesn't feel anything for him, and that she really wants to be with Chris. And Tim wants whatever makes her happy.
Lucy, in the meantime, is breaking. Tim rejecting sex was one thing. But now, as she's trying to talk to him about them, he's pushing her away. That's how she sees it, at least. Tim's pushing her to UC school. he's going to replace her as his Gofer. "Tim doesn't want me."
"It's time for you to move on." "And some time away would be good." "It's a great opportunity, Lucy." "Mmmhmm." "You should go for it."
She thinks he's using US school as a prop to reject her, to push her away, to separate them. And it hurts.
Lucy looks up to Tim's eyes, searching them for something to tell her that she's wrong, something that'll make her believe he means this for her good, truly. Something that says, "I'm not rejecting you."
But Tim turns away. Because this burns. He glances inside to see Chris on the couch, through that threshold Tim thinks he will never cross, again.
He barely glances back at Lucy... because the tears are already brimming in his eyes... and he can't let her see.
Lucy stands in the hallway in pieces. Because she wanted to talk to him. She had time to consider their actions, and she needed to know why he crossed that threshold. Was it just physical? Is there something more there for him, as there is for her?
But they're still talking past one another. Time will tell if they learn how to have an actual conversation.
Dye Hard
"I'd like to congratulate Officer Lucy Chen for successfully completing the DEA Covert Operations Training Academy, which is no small feat."
Tim is watching her the whole time, smiling at her accomplishment. It's no longer, "Your accomplishments are my accomplishments". Lucy did this all on her own.
And Tim is going to support Lucy however he can. Because, in his mind, that's all he can do, now.
Look, 5x01 was all over the place for Tim, emotionally. But in 5x02, he had time to consider what happened, and he has determined that he is Lucy Chen's biggest mistake.
Think about it. He knows how heartbroken she was after her ex cheated on him, then married the girl. From what he knows, Lucy has never cheated, and we know that he never has, either.
So, he has to think about what went wrong, and in Tim's mind... it was him. We know that's not right. We know how these two feel about one another. We know it was a lapse in judgment, not an absence of emotion.
But Tim grew up in an abusive household, with a father who likely blamed him for every beating. He was never good enough... maybe he questioned if anything about him was good.
He puts himself in harm's way every day to protect people, to help people, to put some good out in the world. But what did he do with Lucy? He led her down a path that left her guilt-ridden.
We know that's not true! But, Tim is keeping his distance from Lucy, now, in an effort to protect her... and himself. It's such a mess.
He doesn't even walk over to congratulate her. For all he know, he hasn't texted her since she left for UC school. They're both stuck in their heads thinking the other needs/wants space. A simple conversation would solve everything... but they're too hurt to even start it.
"He hasn't replaced you, yet, so he's happy."
Ouch. Lucy gives us quite a bit of insight into her head right now. She thinks Tim's unhappy, so Tim replaced her... and is avoiding her.
Her eyes land on him across the room, and he can feel her gaze. He looks back, but he has no idea what to say. Lucy breaks the eye contact, feeling even more lost than she did before.
"When did you last hear Chen on the radio?"
It's Lucy's first day back on the job since leaving for UC School, and Tim's hyper-aware of that. He's keeping a listening ear out for her, even if he would never admit it.
He jumps into action, immediately, to go rescue Chen... Chen... He said "Chen", didn't he?
In the past, Tim stuck to "Boot" or "Chen" with Lucy nearly all of the time. "Lucy" was a rarity. But, in 5x01, that's all he called her. He uses her name at the end of 5x02 during their breakup scene (thank God we got that out of the way...).
But once they're both back on the job, he's gone formal as a way to protect and distance himself. But that was before his woman was in possible danger.
"Chen? Chen!" "Yeah. Yeah, I'm in here!" "Hang on. The door is stuck." "No kidding." "You okay?"
Tim is looking at her not entirely like an SO, but more like an... SO. Oh, you know what I mean. He looks her over to make sure she's alright, and there's this softness to it that reminds me of how he looked at her in her apartment before they found Chris.
This is their first interaction since he encouraged her to go to UC school. And it's him rescuing her, again.
Getting to say, "You okay" is the first opportunity he's had to gauge how she is directly in weeks, and her brain is already firing on the Rosalind angle.
This episode is the peak of their era of discomfort. And we needed it. We needed to see how it looks when these two are pining and aching for one another, but not knowing the other wants them, too.
Sure, they could have skipped this era, but this is a huge transition for these two. Every step of this relationship has been earned. There are times he was in the wrong, and times she was in the wrong, and now they're both wrong.
The Choice
"I'd like to stay, too, and make sure Bailey's never down there by herself."
Tim glances back at her as she says it. Rosalind's acolyte... another... trapping another woman in a hole. But one thing I love about this is how Tim never once tells her to sit it out, or acts like she can't handle it.
Lucy once said if she couldn't handle Rosalind in a cage, she shouldn't be a cop. She also said that she knew Tim would help her if it got to her head. (and he protested... but... c'mon, we all know he's going to do it).
"Is John there? Lucy, where's John?"
Lucy looks up to Tim, unsure how to answer. He feels her glance and he kneels down, taking over. "If you need a cop, tag me in" comes to mind.
"Chen." "I'll go down." "No. There may be more traps. It's too dangerous. Just be ready to follow if it's clear." "Okay."
I get both perspectives in this moment. Lucy wants to help in every way that she can. She survived one of Rosalind's acolytes. She wants to do everything she can to help Bailey.
But Tim's not about to lose Lucy to Rosalind twice. He already has his gear in hand as he preps to go down. And he can't look at her.
Tim can't meet her eyes as they're arguing here about who should go down. The last time they were on opposite sides of an issue they were in the air and she kissed him out of nowhere. It's still too fresh.
He settles into position, and as he does he can't help but look up at Lucy—to find her staring back at him. And then neither can look away.
Because they both know that if there are more traps, this may be their last moment looking at one another.
It's the risks they take for their job, but sometimes when you face your own mortality directly (and I have a few times), you consider all the things left unsaid. These two have a lot left unsaid.
In classic YA romance style, Lucy seems to hold her breath until he disappears from sight, when she starts breathing, again.
The rest of the episode isn't Chenford-heavy (this episode isn't about them), but the fact that Lucy was the one to bring Bailey back? Oh, I'm in tears. Because not only did Lucy beat Rosalind's acolyte once by cheating her Day of Death, but she did it twice by saving Bailey.
Stopping here with these three. I feel like we really needed this episode for Tim and Lucy, though. This is the first episode they're working together, again, after things started to get weird. And they easily found their rhythm of leaning on one another, again.
They needed that. They needed to get here so we could get what we see in the rest of the season. If the avoidance had lasted too long, I fear it would have gotten tired and frustrating. Yes, Tim and Lucy aren't yet ready to talk about them, but they're talking, again. Even if it's only work-based, they're talking, again.
And that gives us what we need to get into "The Fugitive". But that, quite literally, is another Meta.

Long explanation of methodology below:
When I make these guides, I generally aim for the least amount of required episodes to follow major developments. If an important fact is introduced in one episode and then is flashed back to in a subsequent episode, I'll just mark the second as plot instead of the first because the necessary information is repeated. As such, I may mark the introduction (and sometimes death) of a villain as non plot if they don't actually introduce any new mechanic or real threat and are just showing that they exist or don't exist anymore. This is also because most villains in Precure don't actually get a development arc.
In this season, plot refers to Syrup's storyline, the rose garden, and any new major Precure powers. I also bothered to mark villain defeats for this one since they seemed to be trying a little more than normal to show us villain relations (primarily in Anacondy's cruel desperation). And the ones that had nothing to do with anyone's character development got vaporized in new powerups which would have been marked as plot anyway.
As for the monarchs, well. They're technically plot since they need 4 of them to open the road to the rose garden, but they also don't add much to the show in terms of character development (besides the first one, Donut King). At some point when it feels like a "gotta catch 'em all" situation like in S1, I really didn't feel like people would be missing out on much by not seeing all their introduction episodes.
Recommended filler indicates one or more of the following:
There is some form of character exploration here, whether that's development, talking about their past, or showcasing a new relationship dynamic between multiple characters. Basically, if I feel like it's somewhat new to them and not just reaffirming the status quo at the end of it, I mark it as recommended.
They get some small new attack that didn't have a ton of buildup to it. (If it really feels like it's pulled out of nowhere I may just mark it as filler, though that didn't happen in this season.)
The episode is particularly comedic (these are always marked in case you still want to skip them.)
The episode is strangely well directed and yet it isn't a plot episode, or it generally stands out in setup
They had some plot information that is sort of repeated in the future but not completely flashed back to. In which case it's a gray area and I just threw it in here and probably left a note.
And filler is everything else. Maybe it's really boring or annoying to watch, maybe it's just an okay episode that would be enjoyable for someone who isn't looking for much character development. Maybe it's a character learning the same lesson over again and was marked as filler for repetition. You can always watch the previews from previous episodes to see if the content piques your interest.

Summary:  A series of 100-500 word drabbles to accompany my rewatch of season 2 of Once Upon a Time as an attempt to finally jump start the muse again.  There will be a drabble–either a deleted scene, a “fix it” fic or a character musing for each episode of the season.  Focus will be on Emma, Henry, the Charmings and Killian–with an emphasis on the very beginnings of Captain Swan’s epic love story, as soon as a certain dashing pirate makes his appearance.

“Emma, are you sure about this? Mary Margaret asked, brows furrowed. 
Emma stopped pacing and stared at her mother. Truth be told she wasn't sure about anything, hadn’t been, well, really since Henry knocked on her door back in Boston, but especially since she pulled the "blacksmith" out from under the pile of bodies. It was the strangest and most exhilarating thing she had ever experienced, a shoot of pure, unadulterated electricity running through her entire body as soon as she touched his hand. For one moment, one singular moment, everything came into focus, like a camera zooming in on its target.  It was like she'd suddenly found something that she didn't even know she was missing, like in one blinding flash of light, everything in her entire insane life just made sense.
 She'd blinked, let go of his hand and stepped back. The spell was broken.  She’d felt something else, too, when she’d looked into his eyes as he sat at the table, accepting the drink they’d brought him. She’d felt her superpower kick into high gear.  Whoever the hell this man was, he wasn’t a cowardly blacksmith who’d hidden under a pile of bodies to escape murder at Cora’s hands.
 "I'm sure," Emma said, her eyes hard. "He's lying. There's no doubt about it. We can't trust him, anymore than we can trust Cora. Mulan. Tie him to that tree until we can get him to talk."
The man protested weakly as Mulan complied, pulling him roughly with her, slamming him against the tree and binding his hand and stump behind his back. The other princess, Aurora, Emma thought it was, looked troubled, wringing her hands and shooting the man pitying looks. 
Snow pulled her aside and tried one more time.  “Emma, I know Cora.  I know what she’s capable of.  If this man is her victim, maybe we can use that to our advantage.”
Emma glanced over at the man again, saw the look of cowardice leave his eyes and a look of defiance take its place.  Her heart began racing again as her stomach swooped. She hadn't felt anything remotely like this since Neil, and she knew very well how that had ended up. In the space of a moment, Emma built up the walls around her heart thicker and higher and more unscalable than they'd ever been. Never again would she let herself be hurt like that period never again would a man destroy her like Neil had.
“Whether he’s her victim or her coconspirator, he’s going to give us answers, and he’s going to give them right now.”
Ruthlessly shoving the feelings this man inspired into a deep, dark, secret closet of her heart and then padlocking it, Emma clenched her fists and stomped over to him.  She was getting those answers and she was getting them now.  Then she was going home, far far away from piercing blue eyes and a devilishly handsome face.

Titans (April 2023)
Multiple heroes and villains from DC Comics' TV shows and movies make cameos in Titans season 4 as Beast Boy travels the multiverse. The question of Beast Boy's whereabouts hung over the Titans season 4 mid-season premiere, as Gar Logan was curiously absent when the Titans emerged from a death realm after escaping the clutches of Mother Mayhem and Brother Blood. The team recalled hearing Gar's voice guiding them back to reality but had no clue what had happened to him.
Titans season 4, episode 9, "Dude, Where's My Gar?" revealed Beast Boy's fate after he attempted to enter the mystic realm called The Red, which ties all animal life together. With the guidance of the hero Freedom Beast, who also taps into The Red as part of his powers, Beast Boy learns the truth about his origins and just how powerful he truly is. Beyond transforming into animals, Beast Boy can use the Red to travel in time and between worlds. This leads to a lengthy sequence in which Beast Boy travels between realities and 13 massive cameos from across the DC Comics Multiverse.
Upon emerging into the space between worlds, Beast Boy hears Freedom Beast's voice, informing him that The Red "connects and pervades all animal life, in this universe and many others." Immediately afterward, Beast Boy is almost knocked off his feet by a streak of yellow lightning that moves past him several times. The lightning forms into a portal, which shows a red-clad figure in yellow boots running almost faster than Beast Boy can perceive. Arrowverse fans will instantly recognize the fast figure as the Barry Allen of Earth-Prime (Grant Gustin), who apparently passed through The Red while running between realities himself.
The Flash briefly knocks Beast Boy into another world, where his arrival does not go unnoticed. Beast Boy is approached by a stunned Stargirl (Brec Bassinger), who informs him that he is in Blue Valley, Nebraska when he asks where he is. It is implied, but not outright stated, that Beast Boy has traveled to the Earth-2 setting of Stargirl, confirming a long rumored crossover between Stargirl and Titans. The two heroes chat briefly about the importance of family before Beast Boy sends himself back into The Red to search for the Titans.
Once he is back in The Red, a number of portals open up before Beast Boy, showing him several other worlds. The first portal shows a dour green figure with red eyes sitting in a rainy marsh. This is the Swamp Thing of Earth-19, played by Derek Mears in the short-lived Swamp Thing television series, which ran for one season in 2019 on the DC Universe streaming service.
The next portal shows a city at night and a figure with a glowing lightning bolt on his chest flying toward the portal. However, the portal closes before he can emerge into The Red. While the vision is obscured by darkness, the lighting symbol easily identifies the hero as Zachary Levi's DCEU Shazam, fresh from his starring role in Shazam: Fury of the Gods.
The next portal opens upon a library, where a figure with a sketch pad turns around. They seem surprised at first, telling Beast Boy, "I can see you." The figure then smiles and asks Beast Boy, "Can you see me?" While this sharp-dressed character might appear to be a variant Lex Luthor, it is writer Grant Morrison. Morrison has had a prolific career in comics, with lengthy runs on JLA, Batman, and X-Men winning multiple awards.
Morrison's cameo here is notable as they are the creator of The Red, introducing the idea of a mystic force connecting all animal life comparable to The Green from Swamp Thing during their run on Animal Man. They also created the character of Freedom Beast and are notable for breaking the fourth wall in their stories, having written themselves into Animal Man as a character. As a bonus Easter egg, the sketch Morrison is drawing seems to be a rough draft of the Map of the Multiverse from Morrison's story The Multiversity, which developed the modern DC Comics Multiverse.
The final portal shows a television set, which is broadcasting an episode of Teen Titans Go! The animated Beast Boy (Greg Cipes) appears briefly, angrily saying, "Waffles, waffles, waffles!" This is a nod to the Teen Titans Go! season 1 episode "Waffles," in which Cyborg and Beast Boy annoy the rest of the Teen Titans with their contest to see who can go the longest only speaking the word "waffles."
After the portal showing the animated Beast Boy closes, a shrill woman's voice calls out that the party is over. While the woman does not appear on-screen, her voice is recognizable as that of Kaley Cuoco's Harley Quinn from the animated Harley Quinn series.
Harley's shout is answered by two maniacal laughs, which overlap one another. The first belongs to Arthur Fleck, the unfortunate party clown and aspiring comedian played by Oscar Winner Joaquin Phoenix in Joker. The second belongs to Jack Napier, the hitman turned "fully-functioning homicidal artist," who became the Joker, played by Jack Nicholson in the 1989 Batman movie.
The cacophony of mad laughter quickly fades, replaced by a firmer voice. This voice speaks to Beast Boy, telling him that "your fate is utterly binding." The voice belongs to the Doctor Fate of Earth-167, who spoke the same words to a young Clark Kent in the Smallville season 9 episode "Absolute Justice."
Another voice speaks to the confused Beast Boy. This voice assures him that "one thing I do know, son, and that is you are here for a reason." Superman fans will recognize the voice as the Jonathan Kent of Earth-96, who gave the same advice to a young Clark Kent just before his death in Superman: The Movie.
Another laugh breaks through the rush of sound. An unseen figure introduces himself to the people of Gotham City as The Joker. This voice will be instantly recognizable to fans of the 1966 Batman television series (aka Earth-66) as actor Cesar Romero, who played the Clown Prince of Crime in all three seasons and the first Batman movie.
The final scene of Titans season 4, episode 9, "Dude, Where's My Gar?" finds Beast Boy falling out of The Red and into the living room of a luxurious mansion. Beast Boy passes out just as Cyborg (Jovian Wade) runs into the room. Recognizing Beast Boy, he calls for Cliff and Larry, saying that they have a big problem.
This version of Cyborg appears to be the same Vic Stone from the first three seasons of Doom Patrol. However, Doom Patrol is set on a different Earth than the Earth-9 setting of Titans. Presumably, an explanation for just how this Cyborg knows Beast Boy will be delivered later in the season.

Well knowing that Gabrielle would not leave her alone in such a vulnerable state even if the girl’s life depended on it, Xena allowed herself several moments to soak in her friend’s comforting presence. Then the warrior princess tensed her shoulder muscles just enough so that Gabrielle alone would notice. She lowered her voice below Melas’s hearing range to make a rare entreaty. “Please. I just need a minute.”
Gabrielle reluctantly pulled away. “Alright.” Her hand still resting on the woman’s inner shoulder, she softly but pointedly added, “But I’ll be waiting for you…”
Xena’s jaw tightened as she nodded curtly. Nevertheless, she tossed a grateful smile at her friend to ease the bard’s mind.
That reassuring hand squeezed her one final time and then left her.
The warrior princess forced herself not to look back.

As promised, she did not keep Gabrielle waiting long. Both surprised and not, need and wariness battling within her, she froze when the blonde enveloped her in an embrace that included each stocky limb. “Gabrielle? What- How- Why-”
A tearful, teasing, “There’s a sentence in there just dying to get out!” tickled the hollow of her throat.
“Why would you want to stay with me after what I told you? How can you-”
“You need me.” 
Xena shook her head. “Gabrielle, you need to get out of here!” she demanded close to bitingly despite being unable to get her body to cooperate in separating from the girl.
Gabrielle did it herself. Releasing Xena, she pulled back to say, “Fat chance. I’m not going anywhere.” A self-deprecating smile flashed across her face with the popping of an ember when she conceded, “But I will give you some space. Good-”
“Gabrielle, I mean it! Not- just because of me, but Callisto! She’s smart; she’ll know how much you mean to me! That p-”
“Puts me in grave danger. What else is new? Good night, Xena.” The bard settled on her side with her back to the woman.
Huffing and scoffing in one, Xena mirrored her.

Elven ears attuned to the nearly inaudible sniffling coming from behind them. Automatically, the body they were attached to rolled over to reach out and make contact with its upholder. Gabrielle once more attempted to dry Xena’s face.
Rather than pull away again, Xena could not stop herself from snatching her friend’s hand and holding it to her cheek. She smiled, which made her cry harder, when the little bard scootched closer to both provide her with warmth and ward off the smothering flames of the past.

Gabrielle echoed Xena’s tossing and turning throughout the night. Her instincts kept her catering to her hero, no matter her state of consciousness. Liquid pain from the brunette required caresses from her small hands. Reciprocal stroking compelled Gabrielle to remain utterly still, biting back grins at the profound gratitude and wonder emanating from her soulmate.
“You’re still here,” that deep voice whispered each hour. 
“You’re not alone,” her sleep-roughened one murmured back.

Season 3 finale! Episode 8!

49.) THREE MONTHS LATER. I love that the deaths has Barb and Bob BUT NOT BENNY OR THE MORE THAN HALF DOZEN OTHER PEOPLE WHO FUCKING DIED IN SEASON 1. The show literally forgets who all died.
50.) Steve put his mom down as a reference because she’s ‘like super well-respected’.
51.) Steve isn’t an idiot, he’s just dyslexic and is bad at answering on the spot. But he definitely has seen all 3 Star Wars movies without being forced. It wasn’t actually nerdy to see Star Wars in the 1980s, guys. They were blockbuster hits that everyone and their mother watched.
52.) Byers are leaving Hawkins. Joyce has a terrible history with dating.

Okay so season 3 is a mixed bag at breakneck pace. Hopper’s characterization is inconsistent as hell. I don’t care about Mike/El, tbh. I also think the Duffers don’t understand most media, let alone feminist literature enough to make a cogent point about anything. By this time the Russian angle was already super played out and being set in the 80s doesn’t make it better, honestly.
Anyway, it’s once again a mediocre season elevated by a good cast but I love Steve and Robin being friends. It has good moments and if they’d had a better script it could have been great. But that would require smart men. Smart men who don’t do a circle jerk because they remember 80s movie references.

I highlighted some of them in purple cuz they're just silly little goofy shows with the occasional life lesson and I love them. Special shoutout to the DC superhero girls for doing Bruce Wayne right. Batman, yeah he's a fun goofy guy, but Bruce Wayne? That man is a himbo surrounded by cameras 24/7 and acts like a real billionaire and who would ever suspect that man to be Batman? WHO???

I'm gonna say Justice League Animated Series. Just because that was the first piece of DC content I consumed and also because all the episodes were available on YouTube for free for a brief period of time before they got taken out and I watched the first two seasons (which was not the Unlimited ones) like, 3 or 4 times.
I havent watched enough of Batman TAS, just a few episodes, and I havent watched all of Teen Titans either and Young Justice went down after season 1 and I'm bitter about more than a few things in there.

It's the Batfamily. Found family, sibling shenanigans and protective brothers galore. I love them all so so much.
But another family which I especially like is the Flash family. But it's not my favorite cuz I haven't consumed enough content on a lot of the characters there and I can't relate very well to some characters in there. But I love the Flash family because it is an utter mess. At least with the Bats, you know that all of them are connected to Bruce on some level. But the Flashes? God, they're all disasters and I love them. I'm mentioning the Flash family under the category of superhero family favorites because of Bart, Max, Barry, Wally and Nora (XS).
20. Young justice(show) or Teen Titans(show)?

The Teen Titans show. All the way. Young Justice crashed after season 1 and there are more than a few things that I am bitter about. And those things just drive me up the walls with anger like- vfgeyhhwblaeiehildsbfgfh veger asbhvid fwrdhbdw

SO. You obviously know it's Tim Drake. But before, I used to like Dick Grayson. Why? Because of Young Justice season 1. The kid was smart, sly, cheeky, badass, and a dangerous joy to be around. But he was a combination of comics Tim and Dick. Not- Dick. I realized that later when I read...
That's right, Red Robin. Red Robin was the first Tim Drake content I consumed (other than the Batman: TAS one with Tim, though that was Tim and Jason combined).
I read Red Robin and fell in love with the utter trash this kid was. I read about him in his lowest point and fell in love. I understood him on a deeper level. I especially loved-
You guessed it, the speculative element. I love mysteries, riddles, puzzles. And Red Robin had some good speculative elements to it. That fight against the Council of Spiders? Chef's kiss. I also love how Tim went behind everyone's backs and came up with the best fucking plans to defeat the bad guys, and I especially love how most of the time it included him getting hurt. Am I saying this boy is self-destructive? Absolutely. I love that shit cuz I can relate to it (on a level).
But you know what sealed the cake when I read his Robin run?
THIS WAS A FUCKING CHILD WHO WAS A FUCKING DAMN GENIUS AND HE CHOSE THE SUPERHERO BIZ AND HE IS GOOD AT IT.
I once saw a post that talked about how Tim Drake is the Robin that everyone knows, not Dick, not Jason, not Damian. Tim. Tim built the whole brand of Robin. That signature 'R'? That was all him. And you can see that in the comics. When he can't reach his batarangs (or birdarangs), he uses the 'R' fixed to his chest as a weapon to escape multiple times. It's not just branding. It's strategical. Before, Robin was all "Holy crimes, Batman" and scaly panties (love that for Dick), but Tim came and rebranded the whole Robin legacy. His backstory isn't well-known but it was him who removed Robin out of Batman's shadow. Now, Robin is still a protegee, but an independent protegee. Sure Dick's Robin with the Titans already showed that, but it was Tim who came and fully established that. He's the only Robin who had his own comic run that went around 200 issues and he's the only Robin who appears the most in other comics. Nightwing doesn't count cuz he moved on from Robin.
I like Tim because he's a normal kid who chose something and worked on it till he became good at it.
My dad likes Batman because he was a normal guy who chose something and worked on it till he became good at it. And now I like Batman because of that.

I can go on for much longer, but this rant proved to be too long once again. Timothy Jackson Drake is one fucking badass character and I am so mad that he's so ignored and tarnished badly in the comics, but I am so fucking ecstatic that the fanfiction and the fandom community is celebrating him and have so much fanfiction with him. Especially how he joins the family early.

9-1-1 REACTION
This reaction is for the season 6, first episode titled “Let the Games Begin” which originally aired on September 19, 2022. The episode was written by Andrew Meyers and directed by Jann Turner. Spoilers ahead!

Our favorite first responders are back with a new season, a new episode, and quite a few old, unresolved issues. This past Monday, we joined back up with the 118 and were immediately thrust into action. Last season’s blackout was a 4-part episode event and frankly it was a bit exhausting. This season’s big disaster opener features a dirigible crashing into a packed stadium. There’s fire. There’s chaos. There’s a girl with a artificial heart. While the disaster episodes are generally some of my favorites, I’m really glad they decided to scale this one back. Athena is able to locate the girl’s mom who has the backup portable artificial heart and Bobby and the 118 are able to rescue the two pilots of the crashed blimp. I kept waiting for something bad to happen to one of the 118 because the sneak previews have been hinting at something potentially life-threatening happening to one of our beloved characters, but everyone was safe and sound after this major disaster.
Rather than go beat by beat, I think it would be best to check in with each of our main characters. Let’s start with Bobby.

Things got rough there towards the end of last season for our favorite captain and nearly losing Chim and Hen due to Jonah’s psychotic behavior almost ended his sobriety. Thankfully, Eddie managed to talk some sense into Bobby and by the end of the season finale, Bobby revealed that he would be taking Athena on a honeymoon. Flash-forward four months later, Bobby is being very meticulous with his planning for the cruise he and Athena are going on. We later learn from Athena the reason why Bobby is so hellbent on keeping the two of them so busy. The cruise ship has a LOT of bars and Bobby wants to ensure he is not tempted into drinking. 
With Bobby and Athena away, someone needs to lead the 118. Bobby’s first pick for interim captain was Lucy Donato of all people. Apparently she has 10-plus years of experience on the job? Anywho, everyone seems pretty nonplussed by this news with the exception of Buck. More on that later. Anywho, Lucy has a broken foot or something (I really don’t care and I’m surprised they brought her back) and therefore unable to take on the role. Bobby ends up selecting Hen and everyone, even Buck, is okay with this decision. The only reason he didn’t ask Hen in the first place was because he was worried about her being overburdened. Ah, Bobby is such a good guy! 
Let’s check in on Chimney and Maddie. Last season was quite eventful for these two even though they spent most of the season sidelined. After both returned from Boston, they decided what was best for everyone was to coparent Jee-Yun. We watched Maddie conquer her fears about being a bad parent and we saw Chim slowly begin to trust her again. 
When the water is cut off in Maddie’s apartment, Chim invites her and Jee-Yun to come live with him. It doesn’t take long before the two of them fall into bed together. Naturally Chim freaks out and I thought it was so funny that he kept referring to him and Maddie sleeping together as a “one night stand”. Can you have a “one night stand” with someone you’ve had a long-term relationship with? Maddie wakes up alone in bed and has a freak-out of her own. She then has an epiphany while talking to Josh at the dispatch center. The abandonment she felt earlier than morning was only a fraction of what Chim felt when she left last season. 
The two of them finally have a much-needed conversation and Maddie confesses she wants to be with Chim and Jee-Yun as a family. Chimney and Maddie are back together and no one is more thrilled than me! I hope this season is kinder to these two because after their rough courtship is season two and three followed by a difficult pregnancy in season four and then everything that went down last season, these two need a happy ending.

Let’s talk about Buck. It’s been four months since he kicked Taylor to the curb and apparently she took his couch! I know most folks in the fandom were not a fan of Ms. Taylor Kinney. I never minded her and I always defended her as a character because the things people chided her for are the very same things that people celebrate about Buck. However, I feel like she really crossed the line when she went behind Buck’s back  and exposed Jonah last season. Her actions could have jeopardized his career as a firefighter and put Hen and Chimney in even more danger. Nevertheless, our beloved Buck is single again which means he has plenty of time to spend with his not-husband, Eddie, and his not-son, Christopher. Seriously, I love how much this show toys with the Buddie shippers. It’s borderline cruel at this point. Excuse me while I cackle. Okay - I’m done. Back to totally straight Buck and totally straight Eddie and their modern family. 
Buck complains to his bestie about Bobby overlooking him for the interim captain position and I honestly hate how dismissive the characters on this show are when it comes to what Buck is feeling. The only person who ever goes out of their way to validate Buck’s feelings are Hen and that’s why she is fully-deserving of being the new interim captain.
Christopher takes a moment to remind Buck he doesn’t have a sofa while Buck is making food for the three of them. Buck points out that the couches came with his exes. Eddie then reminds Buck that it’s been four months and he’s yet to replace it. 
Buck goes out of his way to impress Bobby in hopes he will be chosen for the interim captain position but ultimately loses out to Hen. When he confronts Bobby about it, Bobby explains to Buck that while no one goes harder than him when it comes to the job, he lacks the experience that Hen does. Kudos to Buck to acknowledging that the captain is right and I love the advice Bobby gives to him when Buck admits the real reason he hasn’t replaced the missing sofa in his apartment. He’s afraid of making the same mistake again. Bobby tells him to take inventory of his life and admit his shortcomings so that one day he can finally be at peace. Pretty solid advice from everyone’s favorite Papa Bear. At the end of the episode, rather than get a new sofa, Buck moves his lounge chair to where the sofa used to be signifying his contentment with being single.

There’s not much to report on Hen but outside of her getting the interim captain position, we learn that she is about to finish her second year of med school. I’m so happy the writers have decided not to abandon this storyline because maybe one day when 9-1-1 comes to an end, we can get a spin-off show featuring Dr, Henrietta Wilson.
We’ll finish things up with Athena. First of all, I love Athena’s new hair. I didn’t like it when she had it pulled back in the opening scene but when she had it down later in the episode, I really like the length and it suits her. I also want to remind everyone that Angela Bassett is 64 years old and looking flawless. I love her and I’m so excited to see what they do with her character this season.
On top of getting May prepared for her first year of college and getting ready for her honeymoon cruise with Bobby, Athena is also still adjusting to Harry being in Miami with Michael and David. Admittedly I guffawed when I heard her mention Michael, David, and Harry. For starters, I really hated what they did with Harry last season with the whole kidnapping and then him acting out because he blamed Athena. I think the writers also realized how insufferable Harry had become which is why he was shipped off to the other side of the country with his dad and soon-to-be stepdad. I hated to see Michael and David go but good riddance Harry.

After an episode filled with near-fatal emergencies involving blimps, car dealerships and wedding rings, I was pleasantly surprised by how happy things were this episode. Then the proverbial shit hit the fan in the last few minutes of the episode. During a call with her parents who seem to have warmed up to Bobby since we last saw them, Athena witnesses via FaceTime her mom get run over by her dad. And yup, that’s where the episode ends. I know this episode was filmed way before the whole Anne Heck incident but I couldn’t help but think about that when I saw Athena’s dad drive through his house. I guess we'll find out what happens next week!
Overall, I was very pleased with this season opener. We got a disaster which I quite enjoyed and while it wasn’t a multi-episode affair like I’m accustomed to, I’m so glad they changed things up. Who knows! Maybe we’ll get another disaster episode later on this season. Another thing I quite enjoyed about this episode was how it put all of our characters in very interesting places. Hen is the new captain, even if temporary. Buck is single again. Chim and Maddie are back together. Bobby and Athena are finally getting to spend some much needed time together. It’s so good to have the gang back again and I can’t wait to see what happens next! Until next time!
