Plant of the week: Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum)

The name "Milk Thistle" comes from a folk belief that the white veins on the plant's leaves come from drops of Mother Mary's breast milk that were spilled onto the plant. Probably due to this association with her and her miraculous birth, taking a bath in milk thistle and/or drinking a tea from the plant was believed to increase fertility in both women and men across Medieval Europe. New mothers also drank milk thistle tea to increase the production of breast milk for their newborns.

The seeds of this plant contain concentrated amounts of silymarin, which has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral effects. Silymarin has been used as a supportive treatment for liver disease, specifically fatty liver disease (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic varieties) and cirrhosis. New studies are still in the works on this plant as a potential treatment for Alzheimer's, diabetes, depression, and even liver cancer.

Teas containing the seeds and leaves of this plant can be used as a hangover cure.

I found this super sweet cross stitch today while visiting an antique mall and I just had to bring it home and put it in a hoop. I also decided to digitize it and flesh out the unfinished bits.
