Hey Jumblr, I require your assistance
In an effort to be more inclusive and to combat the oversaturation of Christmas at the elementary school I work at, I try to include Hannukkah stories during storytime (I'm a school librarian).
However, as we don't have too many Jewish students, I usually have to quickly explain the holiday and its related vocab when I read one of these books.
I was wondering if you could read my explanations for some of the terms and check for accuracy & potentially suggest a better way of explaining these terms to Grade 1s who know nothing about the holiday (it needs to be quick explanations so we don't lose track of the story).
=-=-=
Dreidel - It's a kind of game using a square top with letters written on each side. Each letter means a different thing. The points are usually counted using chocolate coins, so winning is extra sweet because you get the most chocolate!
Latke - It's a kind of potato pancake. Kind of like a hashbrown patty but even tastier, because it has more stuff in it.
Menorah - It's a name for a special kind of candleholder used during Hannukkah. It has a place for nine candles, and every night of Hannukkah you use the candle in the middle to light another candle.
Rabbi - You know how in Christianity the person who talks in front of everyone is called a priest or a pastor and in Islam they're called an imam? A rabbi is like that, but for the religion of Judaism.
Synagogue - It's the building where Jewish people go to worship. The buildings where people go to worship have different names depending on which religion the building belongs to; Christians have churches, Muslims have mosques, and Jewish people have synagogues.
Note: I have a good starter set of Hannukkah stories thanks to some suggestions from a Jewish coworker, but if you have any recs for Hannukkah stories (or stories during other Jewish holidays) for kids in Kindergarten to Grade 5 I'd be more than happy to add them to my "to buy" list. :)

Spooky season is finally here so I put together a few designs celebrating books and libraries. If you like them, feel free to use them! Four poster designs and four bookmark designs! Again, these posters and bookmarks are absolutely free for you to print and use!
School and public libraries are under attack and need your support. Please consider contacting your local representative to ask that these institutions remain funded and protected.
For additional freebies celebrating Banned Books Week, please check out my Tumblr post here.
If you would like to see more of my library/activism designs or would like to get these designs on a T-shirt, book bag, or sticker, you can visit my shop here.

Shout out to the kid who walked up to me in library today and told me with utmost seriousness, "Ken's job is just beach," before continuing on his way.
That kid wins library today.

Rave at the Library

so my school has been under construction for a while now because they're relocating the library to fit more classrooms, and y'all, I cannot describe to you how weird it is to see the library you've spent the last four years chilling in nearly completely devoid of books. like, imagine a library with no books on the shelves. but nothing else has changed. there are still people hanging out at the various tables, the librarians are still at their desks, but every single shelf you can find is empty. if I can get a decent picture I'll reblog this, but no guarantees.

Tips for Children's Librarians (5/?)
Be as flexible as you can regarding time switches; the teachers will appreciate it and so will the kids (library time is VERY important when you're little).
I personally tell the teachers that so long as I have a spare block or another teacher is willing to switch I don't mind schedule changes so long as I have a heads up so I know who to prepare for.

hello tumblr friends! I cannot believe summer went by so fast we’re already back to school. This summer my library got moved into a new space and we’re still in the process of reopening from covid, so lots of work to be done and lots of things still missing.
I am asking all my friends and family to help me fulfill some items for my library and my students. My library is intentionally set up to be an open and welcoming space for all my students, TK-6th. This Amazon wishlist has items that will make our space more inviting as well as games and toys that promote Social Emotional Learning. I have also opened up the “Give a Tip” option on my page to raise funds to grow our diverse book collection and to gift books to our low income students, which make up 87% of our student population.
Now more than ever books and libraries are so very important for our children and their futures. Especially focusing on Social Emotional Learning. A strong school library builds strong students, but it goes beyond grades and test scores for me. I want our library to be a place of learning and healing and adventure and self discovery. In a world that’s dark and dangerous to our children, we must create safe spaces for them, and what better place than between the pages of a book :’).
Any support helps and is greatly appreciated, especially your thoughts and prayers. I would love to hear your favorite books and memories from visits to your elementary school library; even ideas or things you wish your library had. Thank you in advance for your wonderful support!

It’s inventory week in the library! That means I scan each book in the collection to, as I explain to my kids, “tuck it in for the summer.” Basically, I need to make sure everything’s accounted for by the end of the school year and know if anything’s gone missing.
My predecessor inventoried every year, but I’m learning she wasn’t super big on weeding out the collection unless she absolutely had to. I started inventory yesterday and I already have a small mountain of books to remove from the collection behind my desk.
Out of everything I’ve found, here are my favorites:
A Scholastic book fair VHS from the 90′s that states on the box that it was supposed to be returned to Scholastic after the book fair.
To Hell With Dying by Alice Walker-- She’s an incredibly famous author, yes. But what is this doing in an elementary library?
One particularly politically incorrect fairy tale book from the 1950′s.
Tune back in on Monday for more weeding gems.
