seriously have been thinking about this all night long. call me autistic but the fact that 90% of workplaces the point is not to get your work done and then be done doing it but to instead perform an elaborate social dance in which you find something to do even when you're done doing everything you need to do in order to show your fellow workers that you, too, are Working . because you are at Work . disgusting why cant we all agree that if there is no work immediately to be done. we just dont do anything

#i personally like to not be doing things constantly at all times. it stresses me out #i know there are ppl who thrive on cosntant activity #but me i like to chill out.#and the problem then becomes that i only ACTIVELY remember to do work and Find More Work To Do when im stressed #at the thought that others might want to see me working #if im ever relaxed i just dont look for stuff to do #catch 22 of modern work culture which permeates even ostensibly noncapitalist structures like public libraries #for instance: will it really kill anybody if the books get shelved by me now after a very busy day?#or shelved tomorrow morning by. well probably me since i'll be the one at the desk #not in the slightest #but it was work that wasnt being immediately done by me. therefore it was incorrect behavior #that i failed to identify because my instinct is to relax when not immediately presented with a Situation #this got me labeled as 'having no initiative' by my dad from a very early age #and even as an adult i still feel like im a child with no initiative

Quiet moments from Paris while I was waiting for my french diploma results. I ended up getting 72/100, which means I’ll be graduating next year! In September I’ll also be halfway through my degree, studying philosophy and statistics modules. I’m feeling very hopeful for the academic year ahead :’)

It always baffles me when people are so mad about how ao3 operates as an archive and not, like, as an algorithmically driven recommendation machine or as a moral measure of appropriate writing or as a social media site or as anything else people want it to be... It's an archive. It hosts text. That's the sole summary of its job. If you don't like it, you don't...have to use it?

If you want a stricter hosting site for fanfic, ffn exists. If you want something that has an algorithm, pick any social media site nowadays...even tumblr recommends stuff to you now. Ao3 is not going to be your arbiter of fandom discourse nor will it enforce your personal opinion on certain topics because that's a really weird thing to ask of an archive and its staff, and that's straight up not what the site is for. That's like walking into a library and asking snidely why the librarians aren't stopping you from reading the books there. If it makes you mad, there are other fanfic hosting sites that aren't archival-model-based.

Theres a lot of (very very deserved) love for libraries out there, and definitely keep spreading the good word about that, but I don't see people talking at all about state conservation departments.

If you want some more outdoorsy-flavored free activities, check out your local State Department of Conservation. I won't dox myself about it, but there's tons of free activities and classes that are hosted through there.

Do you like birds? Check if there's any bird banding going on. Do you want to learn archery? They might have a free class about it! Native flower gardens? Wild plant identification? Woodcarving? Rope making? Leather crafting?

They have online classes and lectures if those interest you too.

Again: all of this is often totally free. More out of the way than your closest public library, sure... but they're not just programs for kids, and you can find some cool stuff to do!

In honor of Black History Month, we'd like to share our copy of Let Me Live (1937), by Angelo Herndon.

Angelo Herndon (1913-1997) was a coal miner and labor organizer who worked across racial lines. After an attempt to organize black and white industrial workers in Atlanta in 1932, Herndon was arrested and convicted of insurrection. The prosecution case pointed to his possession of communist literature (all of which could be found at a public library), which were found in his hotel room.

Herndon was eventually sentenced to 18 to 20 years of hard labor, but his conviction was overturned by the state appeals court and he was released on bail. On April 26th, 1937, a narrow majority of the Supreme Court ruled in his favor, ruling Georgia's insurrection statute as unconstitutional.

Let Me Live, Herndon's autobiography written during his time in prison, tells the story of his arrest and times in court but also describes his early life up until that point.

This first edition copy features an inscription from Herndon to Thomas Mooney, a noted political activist and labor leader who was controversially imprisoned. When Herndon was out on bail awaiting appeals, he visited Mooney in prison and conducted an interview, which was published in Labor Defender in January, 1935.

Buildings where you don't have a choice about being there should be held to the highest standards of accessibility. If you are going to forcibly compel people to be in a building, it must be possible for them to move around the building easily.

An incomplete list of said buildings:

-Courthouses -Prisons -All buildings related to acquiring licenses of any kind -Public schools

Ideally, of course, all buildings should be held to the highest accessibility standards. But if you're going to be slapped with criminal charges for not showing up somewhere, then it should be incredibly high priority to make sure that everyone can be in the building and move around it.

#A list of the government owned buildings I've been in that actually held themselves to the highest accessibility standards I know of #sometimes known as Universal Design:#-Four of the public libraries #and two of them were actively renovating at the time to bring it closer in line with Universal Design #rather than being currently in line with it
