Emma, the Mutant Bitch

I have only recently discovered my love for Scemma, so the latest news has hit me hard. Fortunately, we have the imagination to get us through the harsh days. So enjoy - Emma, the mutant bitch.

Ps: I have absolutely nothing against Tony Stark. I know absolutely nothing about IronFrost, from what little I've read I get the feeling their wedding is more of a business arrangement, so take everything with a big grain of salt.

And of course a bonus. I only noticed the flower when the picture was finished. And it's even better with her. Just confused wedding guests rush out of the wedding hall, they don't know what's going on, the wedding is cancelled, and suddenly a flower lands in Jean's arms, she looks up and sees her husband in an embrace with Emma. Suddenly, Spiderman is at her side and: Spiderman: Congratulations! You're next! Are you not looking for a groom? I am free. A moment of awkward silence. Jean pierces him with an aggressive fiery gaze. Spiderman: Wait… Aren't you married by any chance? For him?

I don't own any of the material used, the images used should probably all belong to Marvel, Sabrina the teenage witch productions, all the actors, Rewind, etc… Mine are just stupid bullshit.

A Frostitute State of the Union Address

Here we are Frostitutes, the eve of an era and the dawn of a potentially exciting new one. As Rosenberg’s run on Uncanny nears it’s end and Hickmans’ tenure begins, I thought it might be nice to take a step back and take a gander of where were at before the X-Men’s supposedly (and by all accounts it’s true) new, shiny and radical era begins.

Admittedly, I was supremely worried that Rosenberg would have just wasted all the cache and capital established by Leah William’s work establishing Emma as the new Black King of the Hellfire Club. The first solicited covers didn’t fill one with any confidence, despite protestations from official channels that Jordan White has heard us and is on ‘our side’. Witness this cover in particular.

If that doesn’t scream ‘evil bitch’...I don’t know what does.

But, I’m delighted to report that I was proven somewhat wrong, and if not for the perennial toxicity of shipping once again rearing it’s ugly head, this last Uncanny arc would have been decent, dare I say it, actually good. We see glimpses of all the set up Williams did in X-Men Black coming to fruition. We see Emma’s raison d’etre for this new Hellfire Club as being distinct from the old Hellfire Club and this slapdash incarnation of the X-Men, but still with an eye towards protecting mutant interests. It’s especially refreshing to see her take more of an explicitly non super-heroic path to protecting mutant rights, taking to heart her declaration that it isn’t enough to hope that the tides will change. Issue #19 in particular is a good example of this.

I wish there was more of this, but I suppose there aren’t enough pages available for this AND the rest of Rosenberg’s extremely convoluted final arc.

I also appreciated, though at the same time (and we’ll get to this in a second) kind of didn’t, Rosenberg’s positioning of Emma as the behind the scenes driver of the plot ever since the aftermath of Disassembled. It’s very fitting for her character and new status as the Black King, and for the most part the reasons given for her choices make sense and doesn’t do a disservice to the character.

But, there are some choices made that seem unnecessary and made just for the sake of ensuring that at the end of the day, she *really* is the baddie all those toxic fans want her to be. There was no need to have her manipulate Anole into giving Callahan the vaccine (which, let’s not forget, was created by Hank in the first place) to get us to where these last few issues needed the characters to be. Admittedly, Rosenberg does allow her a scene expressing her shame and regret about that decision, but it feels hollow and perfunctory: a not at all convincing moment included just to make sure accusations of doing her dirty won’t get much traction. See? Look! We’re fair AND balanced.

The same sentiment is felt with another seemingly important plot point in issue 21. Emma, with the help of Fabian Cortez, Nemesis and Sinister, is able to wipe all knowledge and memory of mutant kind from humans everywhere, in effect giving mutants the gift of anonymity and the ability to live their lives shielded from human prejudice and persecution. It’s a fantastic moment, one that showcases her power, her ability to turn the tables so effectively on a seemingly intractable villain and positioning her as the actual protagonist of the last ten issues of this run.

But, as with that smaller moment of regret about manipulating Anole, the excitement and payoff is short lived. Rosenberg reverses this massive plot development in scant pages in the next issue, leaving one to wonder what was the point of this whole thing anyway?

The answer comes into view in a few pages when the rest of the crew returns from X-Man’s made up ‘no love, no attachments’ reality. The first thing Jean does, OF COURSE, is share an intense kiss with Scott, much to Emma’s and Logan’s chagrin. The whole affair is of course innocent, no slight is meant....it’s all about true love or whatever, but one can’t help but feel a kind of immature face rubbing on the part of Rosenberg. Haven’t we tread this ground already at the end of Phoenix Resurrection and that Uncanny X-Men annual with Ed Brisson? WE GET IT. You don’t like Scemma. These scenes feel like overkill perpetrated by someone who really wants to make sure you GET IT and that you DON’T MISS THE POINT. It comes off as petty and utterly unnecessary.

Why couldn’t we have given Scott and Emma a nice moment to acknowledge this Scemma business is over, has been over, say their goodbyes, and move on to better things? Why this regressive, pre pubescent obsession with Jott, which honestly also does a disservice to Jean AND Scott, all for the sake of playing ‘my ship is better than yours’? I just wish this whole ship nonsense didn’t exist. It’s just so uncouth and marred what may have been an all around decent run.

Lest we forget between pages and to drive the point home even further, Scott also makes the BRILLIANT...and somewhat uncharacteristic, given all the whole ‘I was wrong’ nonsense he’s been spouting lately, that the whole ‘mutants are now hidden from humans’ thing is a bad way to go and promptly disagrees and wrecks Emma’s plan in the most unsubtle put down imaginable.

SO, now we have this potentially interesting plot development that took so much work to get, undone in a few pages, all for the sake of once again making sure we don’t forget that Rosenberg and White are all in the ‘Emma was WRONG’ (for Scott too y’all, don’t you forget!) camp. What a waste, and honestly we already know this. As with that supposedly humanizing moment of shame and regret about manipulating Anole, we get a cool plot development that’s quickly undone to serve as cover against accusations of impropriety and dirty character work. To quote a famous song, even if Emma gave these bunch of ungrateful ingrates actual diamonds from her womb, that won’t be enough to overpower the seemingly built-in sway of the all powerful (and toxic) Jott ship on some creatives.

....but at least we end this whole sordid affair with this page, with Emma alive and in formation with the rest of the team.

We should also, perhaps, be thankful that the histrionics about Emma, the evil bitch, we’ve all witnessed during the ResurrXion (and shortly thereafter) era are absent. I have things to say about Scott’s seemingly too easy reversal from ‘I was wrong’ to this more...Utopia/Bendis era radicalism...but I’ve droned on enough at this point. And if a bit of hand waving is needed to get us quicker to Hickman’s promised land, hell I’m willing to let it go. Let’s hope this splash page hints at the greatness to come during the aforementioned author’s tenure. Jonathan hasn’t been shy at all about his love of Emma. Let’s hope this forced editorial-mandated group shot (because Hickman gets what he wants, obviously) is a hint of things to come.

I want a Scemma baby because pregnant Emma would make Scott run around for her and he would be so happy to do it.

Also they’d be the funniest parents and they would have the most extra children.

It’s a real shame that we’re at Jott again, where there’s nothing between them anymore.

Utopia Scott would have loved to have the mix of being a Dad, being with Emma and doing x-men work. I know the Revolution era, Xavier’s death and him dying changed him but not going back to who he was years ago. If anything his death, would have made him closer to Emma and not put aside his want for ‘the future’.

Also Krakoa would have given him the opportunity to move on from Xavier’s death not punishing himself repeatedly. Also Emma has made it explicitly clear she’s she still in love with him and wants to be with him.

I feel like they missed how Scott grew up. I think they missed Emma getting the opportunity to move away from the toxic environment but was not expected to change who she was or spend forever repenting.

To me planting the tree in New York is already a sign of acknowledgment from poor writers that you cannot make X-Men work in a Krakoa context as it is so removed from the Universe.

Hopefully Inferno is the beginning of the end for Krakoa. It’s so boring.

I miss Scemma, I cannot live off the scraps of them being on boat. Whilst yes I don’t need to see what poor Esme heard on that boat from Scott and Emma’s cabin room but some cute moments would have been nice.

i miss them so much 😭watching their parenting styles mix would make me scream bc theyre so different but they'd be so cute. honestly i just want to see them interact again whether its romantic or not like i feel like so many writers are forgetting that they held the xmen team together for so long and they were co-headmasters for a long time 😭 regardless of whether theyre a couple or not they work well together and theres no reason why they shouldnt be rn

Your 27 and you are still shipping like a 12 yr old. A 27/28 yr old should not care about a x-men ship like Scott and Emma that much at your age. Become an adult.

I am an adult and like Scott and Emma; liking media and characters at any age isn’t sad. I have not let my life fall to pieces for X-Men (not yet!). Ha.

I have followed their character development and relationship for over a decade now (wow I am old).

It’s my last day at my job. I start a Senior role on Monday and I am going out with a friend tomorrow. I have friends and go out. But if you haven’t got those things you’re not less valid as a person.

But the pandemic got me back into reading comics and I enjoy them. I enjoy talking about them. Blogging about them. It’s fun.

So Scemma forever. I like RoLo but he’ll never be good enough for her but I am sure he improves himself when he is with her.

I have this geeky ass headcanons that I am too old to care about but it’s Krakoa Scemma related

As a call back to Heralds 1 sometimes Scott just lays on Emma the same way just to hear her heartbeat so he knows she’s really there. She plays with his hair too.

This is all started because when they first got back together she would listen to his heartbeat so she knew he was still alive. So he started to do the same because in the chaos of coming back and facing death, hearing her heart reminds him of his life.

Emma finds his goggles cute because the sunglasses were awkward at night. The goggles are more convenient and makes him look even more like a dork but she loves it.

Another headcanon which I hope comes true but slowly Emma is starting to think things are up with Scott. He cannot remember certain things or vaguely remember them; like her birthday he remembers but it’s foggy. He could not remember the first time he told her he loved her clearly. She asks him about when he wanted children with her but he has NO memory of that at all.

He tells her that he is worried how much control Sinister had creating him when he was resurrected. He asks her constantly if his mind is different, his mind works in the same way so she tells him that. She was so blinded by joy that they were together she was blind sided about some missing parts of him. Now she’s getting concerned. He’s forgetting some of their most intimate moments when it their romance/falling in love. Yet he knows he loves her.

When he first saw her in person they both cried. She asked to see his eyes again like in Phoenix Endsong when she goes into diamond form and he shows them. He apologises for what he said and she tells him that when he died in her arms, she was in so much pain that she would spend days (when she disappeared from the comics) in diamond form until she needed to use her telepathy. She tells him that she still shed a few tears in that form.

He didn’t go there expecting them getting back together straightaway, he just went to speak to her but he didn’t end up coming back for a better part of a week. He doesn’t even THINK of Jean in her presence. She also had a whole selection of lingerie for when he came back to her because she always knew he’d end up in her bed straightaway.

She tells him that she constantly checks to see if any of her students have come back. When her students do, Emma visits them almost immediately.

Scott also pleads with her not to get too comfortable with the resurrection protocols because he fears it won’t last forever and something could go wrong. Also he knows Emma is deeply flawed (in Xavier’s eyes) and he worries that Xavier will try to make her more palatable.

She tells him she doesn’t want to spend all that time finding a plastic surgeon she likes and going through that recovery again.

i read all of this literally three times and im crying my eys out im not even joking this part specifically “He tells her that he is worried how much control Sinister had creating him when he was resurrected. Yea I see many claim that Scott is the IT man for Emma and Jean is the IT woman for Cyclops. I think Jean can move on from Scott and once he realise that, Scemma will be tgt once again and forever

idk if i'd say that jean is IT for scott considering how the emma and scott affair started in the first place but like they definitely have a special kind of love that makes them go back to each other time and time again. idk if they'll ever lose that. if they end up drifting apart again then yeah i can see emma and scott getting back together and it'd be nice to see jean dating too

Do you want Morrison era, why Scemma fell in love headcanons (especially Emma)? Because you’re going to get them!

When Emma first approached Scott that night in Hong Kong; they talked for hours. She initially kept talking to him because she couldn’t sleep but she found his vulnerability adorable. He then asked her how she was finding her time in the X-Men. She spoke how she felt like an outsider and he told her that he’s glad for her help and that he can see she cares about the children.

I am going to scratch out the whole therapist stuff because that was badly written.

In Hong Kong she told him he can come to her for anything 😉 So when they start their affair he comes to her office wanting to talk about his feelings and his conflicted sexuality because he felt so open with her in Hong Kong. Also she didn’t mention about how his feelings would impact the X-Men or his role.

When they start their psychic affair she always created a door in the visions where he could walk out at anytime.

Whilst Emma pretended to be Jean she asks why he liked the Dark Phoenix outfit. He said that is because that was a time their love reached fever pitch and the passion and loss of control. He admits that he suppressed all those feelings that came out when he was possessed. Now he doesn’t know how or if he wants them put away forever.

At one point she prompted him, to tell her all his desires with Jean and she’ll help him live them psychically. He got so confused and asked why she was happy playing Jean. Then he realised this was an escape from her own grief as much as it was his way of facing his desires. He said this to her and she was just silent. He held her. She started falling in love then.

He started talking to Emma a lot more after that even in their psychic trysts. He started to ask her how she was because he realised she was absorbing all his issues but no one asked her about her pain. He told her that if isn’t in love with Jean the way he was, he’s confused because how can he not be? How can all of this not cement them forever.

The time she knew she was in love was when he didn’t ask her to change or she felt she didn’t have to pretend to be someone else. From then on she never pretended to be Jean. Only pretending to wear the red hair because she was so desperately hurt when Sophie died. She couldn’t deal with being the person that led Sophie to her death.

He once ended the tryst when Jean came back initially but resumed it when it was clear they were not moving forward. At one point he stood outside her door wanting to go in but walked away. Feeling too guilty.

He has a graphic dream about her and confronts her in her office for going into his mind. She promises (she’s telling the truth) that she did not go into his mind but she did like where his mind wondered.

They enjoyed the psychic affair and it was the most free he felt and the most affection she has ever felt. In fact it was the most alive and also normal he felt, allowing himself to have something so purely selfish and illicit.

THIS IS SUCH A SERVE .... THE SEXY AND DRAMATIC AFFAIR THAT WE ALL WANTED BUT DID NOT GET. like cheating bad etc but also imagine if this is what we got instead of the weird sex therapist stuff i would cry
