Por término medio, se necesitan 10.000 litros de agua para producir un kilo de algodón, o entre 2.500 y 3.000 litros para una camiseta estándar (de 250 a 300 gramos de algodón). ¡Eso es mucho consumo de agua para un trozo de tela tan pequeño! El 4% del agua potable del mundo se utiliza para producir nuestra ropa. El agua utilizada para fabricar algodón es insalubre y se vierte al medio ambiente, contaminando los ríos y el aire.

"Según el 3er Informe de Acción Climática Global por Sectores (Climate Chance, 2020), la producción y el uso de prendas de vestir emiten alrededor del 4% de las emisiones mundiales de gases de efecto invernadero. ¡Pum! Esta afirmación es terrible. "Esto se debe principalmente a la intensidad de carbono de las fibras sintéticas (alrededor del 60% de las fibras producidas - la gran mayoría de poliéster), que es mucho mayor que la del algodón: 11,9 frente a 4,7 kgCO2e/kg (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2017). De hecho, su producción se basa en la transformación de 48 millones de toneladas de petróleo al año y, por tanto, representa casi la mitad de las emisiones calculadas por el informe de la Fundación Ellen MacArthur (530 MtCO2e en 2015, es decir, el 44 % de las emisiones)". Deberíamos favorecer la ropa hecha de cáñamo, un material muy resistente, bambú, lana o lino, que requieren mucha menos agua y producen menos carbono. También hay que evitar los materiales derivados del petróleo. Es mejor recurrir a la ropa de segunda mano.

Además, las vueltas gratuitas contaminan enormemente. En diez años, las devoluciones se han triplicado. La gente compra tres veces más, y ya no hay consecuencias por contaminar y despilfarrar. Las devoluciones se destruyen para que no compitan con los nuevos productos. Las marcas pueden permitírselo porque tienen un margen de beneficio del 90%. De media, cada 100 euros cuestan 8 euros y 2 euros destruirlos. Los tiran al mar y al desierto. Ninguna empresa puede competir con las devoluciones gratuitas.

Las condiciones en que se produce la ropa contaminan. Lo que no es aceptable en Europa no lo es en ningún otro lugar. Al trasladarse al extranjero, los productores no tienen que preocuparse por los criterios sociales y medioambientales. No tratan las aguas residuales, utilizan pesticidas, tratan a los empleados como si fueran esclavos y recurren al trabajo infantil.

W A S H    C L O T H E S    L E S S #TopTipTuesday and this week's #EasyEcoTip is to wash your clothes less and avoid the tumble dryer wherever possible. Research by the Energy Saving Trust has shown that laundering accounts for 60% to 80% of a garment's total environmental impact, so you can significantly reduce your impact even by washing your clothes after every few wears. Furthermore The United Nations Environment Programme crunched the numbers and discovered that you can consume up to five times less energy by wearing your jeans at least three times, washing them in cold water, and skipping the dryer or the iron. Even #levis agree and recommend washing your jeans every two weeks rather than after each wear. Once you've washed your clothes hang them out to dry, not only does line drying reduce energy consumption it also protects your clothes. The agitation of the tumble dryer causes microscopic wear that you can't see unless you look in the dryer's lint compartment. There you will find pieces of fabric that have come off the clothing in the dryer, and they reduce the longevity of your garment. Finally to iron or not to iron - again unless it's essential that you don't look creased then just say no. Not only is ironing the world's worst chore it uses a fuck ton of energy and detiorates fabrics. So know that when you're ignoring that ironing pile you're helping to save the planet - told you this was an easy eco tip!
