#Islamic Short Story 14
Sayem gulped down the cool water, the metallic tang a stark contrast to the heat of his rising anger. He watched in dismay as Hasan and Ezel, two of his best friends, launched the basketball towards Alexandar's group like an unwelcome missile. A brawl erupted, a tangle of limbs and flying insults. Sayem knew this wasn't the first altercation between his group and Alexandar's. They were like oil and water, destined for a fiery clash whenever in proximity. But missing the annual sports day, a competition Sayem had been training for months, was unthinkable.
The coach's booming voice cut through the chaos, separating the combatants. A tense silence descended as the coach surveyed the scene, his gaze finally landing on Sayem, the only one who hadn't participated in the melee.
"Sayem," the dean's voice was laced with disappointment, "tell me the truth. Who started this?"
Alexandar scoffed, his eyes flickering towards Sayem.
Alexandar knew that Sayem would never tell the truth since the truth could mean suspension for Hasan and Ezel, effectively barring them from the competition.
Taking a deep breath, Sayem met the dean's gaze, his voice steady despite the tremor in his hands.
"Hasan and Ezel initiated the fight," he declared, the words heavy on his tongue. Alexandar's jaw dropped in disbelief, while disappointment clouded Hasan and Ezel's faces.
------------
Sayem, Hasan, and Ezel munched on popcorn, dissecting each play of the day's games. Despite the sting of missing the competition, they found enjoyment in watching others compete. In the distance, Alexandar's group erupted in cheers – they had won the basketball match. As Alexandar and his team celebrated, his gaze fell upon Sayem's group. He watched, surprised, as they laughed and debated the winning shot.
A sudden impulse drew Alexandar away from his team. He approached Sayem, his expression unreadable. Sayem, Hasan, and Ezel looked up, a flicker of uncertainty crossing their faces.
"Why?" Alexandar finally asked, his voice low. "You could have lied and played today."
Sayem offered a warm smile. "We couldn't live with ourselves if we did. Allah S.W.T. says in the Quran that,
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allāh, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allāh; indeed, Allāh is [fully] Aware of what you do. "
He paused, reciting the verse from Surah Al-Maidah.
Alexandar listened intently, though the words themselves held no meaning to him. Yet, the sincerity in Sayem's voice resonated.
"Even though we weren't fond of each other," Sayem continued, "lying wouldn't have been right. It was our fault yesterday, and for that, I apologize."
A beat of silence followed, then Hasan and Ezel mumbled apologies in unison. "We're sorry," they echoed.
Alexandar's lips curved into a genuine smile. "Your apology is accepted," he declared, extending his hand in a gesture of camaraderie. "But only on one condition – you accept my friendship."
Sayem's smile widened, and he grasped Alexandar's hand firmly. The gesture was small, but it marked the beginning of an unexpected bond, forged in the crucible of honesty and respect.

Sharun Chowdhury: Victim of False News by Daily Sun and Banglanews
Tumblr media
In a recent development, media outlets, including the Daily Sun and Banglanews24, have come under scrutiny for allegedly disseminating false and fabricated news targeting Sharun Chowdhury and his family. This controversy has arisen amidst claims of a personal rivalry between Nazmul Karim Sharun Chowdhury and Sayem Sobhan Anvir, the owner of the media conglomerate Bashundhara Group.
The media houses under question, including Daily Sun, Daily Kaler Kantho, Banglanews24, Kaler Kantho, and TV Channel News24, have been accused of consistently publishing baseless stories against Sharun Chowdhury and his family. Sharun and his father, Shamsul Hoque Chowdhury MP, who holds the position of Whip of the National Parliament, have now taken legal action by filing a $50 million defamation case against Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, the owner of Bashundhara Group, and Sayem Sobhan Anvir.
The dispute reportedly stems from a personal clash between Nazmul Karim Chowdhury Sharun, who is also a director of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and a prominent member of the Bangladesh Awami League, and Sayem Sobhan Anvir. Sharun claimed in various media outlets that this rivalry began due to allegations of an extramarital affair between Sayem Sobhan Anvir and Sharun’s ex-wife, Saifa Rahman Mims.
Sharun stated, “After our divorce, my ex-wife had nothing to do with me, but I don’t understand why Anvir and Saifa Mims ganged up to defame me and my family using their news media. It’s a shameless and unethical effort to use a media house against personal enmity. I have integrity, and the people know about me and my family. My father has been elected three times as a parliament member and is one of the most popular politicians in Chittagong. This low-class effort by Bashundhara-owned media cannot harm our reputation, as people know who we are. In fact, people have started boycotting them and their media.”
In a remarkable display of solidarity, more than 10,000 individuals from various corners of Chittagong gathered in front of the Chittagong Press Club to express their anger and support for Sharun Chowdhury and his family. The gathering was a response to the allegations of fake news being spread about them by media outlets owned by Bashundhara Group, including the Daily Sun and Banglanews24.
Fueled by outrage over what they perceive as a deliberate attempt to tarnish Sharun Chowdhury’s reputation, the protesters made their voices heard loud and clear. They came together to denounce the alleged false reporting and manipulative news coverage targeting Sharun and his family.
In a symbolic act of condemnation, the demonstrators set effigies of Sayem Sobhan Anvir and his father, Shah Alam, ablaze. These actions underscore the intensity of public sentiment against what they view as malicious activities by the media outlets associated with the Bashundhara Group.
This massive gathering not only highlights the deep-rooted anger within the community but also serves as a testament to the widespread support that Sharun Chowdhury enjoys in Chittagong. As this controversy continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how these developments will impact the ongoing dispute between Sharun Chowdhury and the Bashundhara Group-owned media outlets.
This ongoing feud has not only drawn significant attention within political and media circles but has also raised questions about the role of media houses in personal conflicts. As the legal battle unfolds, the public awaits further developments in this high-profile case.

Week 6: The Rise of Slow Fashion and the Power of Influencers
Tumblr media
The fashion industry has emerged as a leading contributor to environmental pollution on a global scale. Numerous environmental impact assessments have documented the concerning extent of the industry's detrimental impact, which intensifies alongside its growth (Nguyen Thi Van, Vu Tran Bao & Pham Quang 2023). A study conducted by the United Nations reveals that the fashion industry is the second-largest consumer of water globally, while simultaneously contributing to 10% of global carbon emissions and nearly 20% of global wastewater generation. Experts widely acknowledge "fast fashion" as a significant factor exacerbating this environmental wastefulness.
Tumblr media
Emerging in the 1980s, "fast fashion" has become synonymous with rapid trend cycles and frequent new collections at low prices. This business model, characterized by its emphasis on affordability and trend-driven production, has fostered a culture of overconsumption, resulting in a significant overproduction of textile waste (Pucci, Tufarelli & Giliberti 2022).
Tumblr media
Emerging in contrast to the prevalent fast fashion model, "slow fashion" presents a multifaceted approach to the global fashion landscape. This philosophy extends beyond mere environmental sustainability and waste reduction, encompassing the well-being of individual workers, often possessing highly specialized craftsmanship. The term "slow fashion" was first coined by Kate Fletcher, who envisioned it as a holistic approach to design, production, consumption, and ultimately, improved living standards. Fletcher emphasized that slow fashion transcends temporal constraints, prioritizing quality over fleeting trends (Fletcher 2007). It advocates for a paradigm shift, fostering increased awareness among designers, buyers, retailers, and consumers regarding the multifaceted impacts of fashion products on workers, communities, and ecosystems (Fletcher 2010). Driven by growing environmental consciousness and a commitment to individual well-being, consumers are demonstrably shifting their value perceptions and purchasing behaviours (Domingos, Vale & Faria 2022). This evolving landscape has witnessed a surge in support for slow fashion in recent years, as consumers increasingly demand higher standards from brands in terms of sustainability and ethical practices.
Tumblr media
Influencers play a significant role in promoting slow fashion due to their ability to shape consumer behaviour. Beyond traditional beauty and fashion influencers, a growing number of individuals promote sustainable engagement by advocating for green products and encouraging environmentally friendly practices on social media (Jacobson & Harrison 2021). These "sustainable influencers" utilize various content formats, including articles, images, and videos, to not only introduce novel ideas, creative styles, and diverse perspectives to the fashion world but also to cultivate a sense of community and inspire others to adopt more sustainable consumption habits (Kapoor, Tagore & Dua 2022).
Tumblr media
Driven by technological advancements and the burgeoning online presence of digital citizens, the fashion industry has witnessed a rapid shift towards digitalization (Sayem 2022). This era of "digital fashion" has given rise to a novel form of marketing – virtual influencers (Bieńkowska 2023). These computer-generated characters, crafted using software like Unreal Engine and Photoshop (Conti, Gathani & Tricomi 2022), are exerting a demonstrably real influence on consumer behaviour (Jin 2023). Studies reveal that virtual influencers boast three times the engagement rate compared to their human counterparts, captivating audiences with their unique aesthetics and digitally enhanced appearances (Zhong 2022). A 2022 report by The Influencer Marketing Factory indicates that 58% of respondents follow virtual characters on social media, with 35% having made purchases based on their recommendations. Additionally, 27% are drawn to the content these virtual figures generate. This compelling evidence suggests that incorporating virtual influencers into marketing strategies can significantly enhance brand recognition, stimulate discussion, and foster interaction on social media platforms.
Tumblr media
Transcending mere digital mannequins, virtual influencers cultivate vibrant online communities through their carefully constructed personas and narratives (Conti, Gathani & Tricomi 2022). Notably, several virtual influencers have emerged as champions of slow fashion, actively promoting and amplifying sustainable practices within the online fashion sphere (Shin & Lee 2023).
Tumblr media
Noonouri, a CGI creation born in 2018, has garnered significant attention on Instagram with over 371,000 followers. This "branded demon girl" transcends traditional influencer archetypes, promoting not only high fashion from renowned brands but also ethical and sustainable practices. Created by Joerg Zuber, Noonouri's aesthetic draws inspiration from Bratz dolls and Betty Boop, offering a unique blend of cuteness and rebelliousness. Notably, Noonouri actively advocates for vegetarianism and sustainable fashion, refusing to endorse fur products. This commitment extends to social activism, as evidenced by her participation in Naomi Campbell's Fashion For Relief event in 2018. Beyond fashion, Noonouri has established herself as a beauty influencer, collaborating with Dior Makeup since 2018 and recently appearing in Kim Kardashian West's makeup tutorials. By combining high fashion with ethical and sustainable values, Noonouri offers a unique perspective within the influencer landscape, potentially influencing consumer behaviour and perceptions of beauty in the digital age.
By combining fashion with ethical and sustainable values, Noonouri and other virtual/social media influencers are influencing consumer behaviour and perceptions, potentially shaping the fashion industry's future towards a more responsible and sustainable future.

Resilient and Responsible Global Supply Chains - Day 1 (Room XXVI) Forum on Business and Human Rights 2023.
12th UN Forum on Business and Human Rights Brief description of the session: It is common for global retailers to engage in transactional or indirect relationships with their suppliers in the global South. These are characterized by short-term interactions with several suppliers based on maximizing cost and order volumes with little commitment to future business and longer-term relationships. Research has shown, however, that a partnership or direct relationship model can create better business opportunities for both sides, as well as contribute to better labor rights. This panel presents research that examines the steps needed to enter into a partnership model and what the advantages might be for every layer of the supply chain. The panel will discuss whether COVID-19 was the tipping point for global brands that may have already been thinking about switching to a direct sourcing model by consolidating their supply chain and committing to longer-term sourcing relationship. This session will cover recent trends, such as the fact that global retailers are currently making changes to their business model due to the realization that the "just in time" manufacturing is not sustainable in the long term. Panelists will present a roadmap to understand the advantages of the partnership model for all stakeholders involved, how to establish a true partnership, the potential risks involved, and how to mitigate these risks. The panel will touch on the challenges and benefits of moving towards this model for global retailers, suppliers, and ultimately workers who are the most vulnerable at the bottom of these supply chains. Key objectives of the session:
Present research on partnership models
Examine global trends and factors that affect value chains
Discuss challenges and benefits of partnership and direct relationship models
Present a roadmap or key steps to create a sustainable and meaningful partnership
Moderators: Auret van Heerden
Speakers: Fernanda Carvalho, Sanchita Banerjee Saxena, Dijana Mozina Zupanc, Abrar Sayem, Payal Jain, Dan Rees
