Lessons in Chemistry (prod. Lee Eisenberg).
Apple's miniseries adaptation of Bonnie Garmus' bestselling debut novel stars Brie Larson as a chemist turned television cooking host in a simplified dramatization of the female empowerment movement in midcentury Southern California. How it weaves in a reluctant romance, academic politics, and Civil Rights through its Black characters never quite entirely works together episodically.

Looking for Alaska
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
Looking for Alaska (2019, USA)
Directors: Sarah Adina Smith, Rachel Lee Goldenberg, Brett Haley, Ami Canaan Mann, Clea DuVall, Megan Griffiths, Rashaad Ernesto Green & Josh Schwartz
Writers: Josh Schwartz, Warren Hsu Leonard, Stephanie Savage, Ashley Wigfield, Kirk A. Moore, Leila Gerstein & Kendall Rogers
Mini-review:
There are a lot of good book-to-movie/TV adaptations. However, there is something that's a lot rarer: an adaptation that improves on the original in pretty much every way. Looking for Alaska is one of those. Going for a miniseries instead of a movie means that everything is much more fleshed out, from the characters to the setting and the themes. The show also perfectly captures the atmosphere of the novel. I've always felt that atmosphere was what made this book so special and popular, and this adaptation made me feel exactly the same. I must admit, though, I still don't like Miles as a lead character, like at all. But, since the other characters get as much focus as him, I didn't dislike him as much as I did in the book.
What's more, the cast is absolutely spectacular. They all nail their roles. I seriously can't think of many teen movies/shows with such fantastic acting. Kristine Froseth and Denny Love are particularly showstopping and I was really surprised (and disappointed) to see they didn't get any award nominations. They're truly that good. Lastly, I want to talk about the setting. I just loved Culver Creek, the pranks, the locations, everything. I honestly wish they would have turned this into some sort of anthology where we follow a different set of Culver Creek students in each season. Seriously, the setting has so much potential. Anyway, this is easily one of the best book adaptations I've ever seen, and I'm really glad I decided to watch it.

Something in the Dirt    [trailer]
Two new neighbors witness what seems to be a supernatural event in one of their apartments. At first terrified, they realize that documenting this phenomenon could provide them the lives they’ve always dreamed of.
Delightful spoof of pseudo-scientific reports and paranormal thrillers.
It takes a while to get used to the two characters. The opening feels a little too agressively improvised with dialogue that sounded like being made-up on the spot.
But after a while the riffing on made-up scientific theories and ideas takes over and you start to get into the flow. Though I think they should've tried to streamline it a bit and find an end around the 90 minutes mark.
Nevertheless, proof that it was possible to make movies during the pandemic that are much more energetic and weird than just two people having a zoom conversation.

I can't believe it. I know the musical is new, like really new, but I didn't think tumblr would let me down like this.
I found NOTHING for A Transparent Musical.
I've already seen it twice and BOY CAN I NOT WAIT FOR THE SOUNDTRACK TO BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
I've got the songs stuck in my head and no where to hyperfixate. It's driving me mad that I can't even find any of the lyrics online.
I need to draw fanart soon or I'm going to burst.

The Drop (dir. Sarah Adina Smith).
Jermaine Fowler and Anna Konkle star as a married couple in the deceptively simple premised vacation comedy about the repercussions of dropping and injuring a baby. Despite the laser-focused comedic setup, the loose film drives down on its characters, situational nature, and awkward jokes. There’s not much to the thin plot where the comic actors and comedians are allowed to riff on the nature of their situation.

i'm aware this list is very basic and really that's because i'm just a bad film student. lol.
this list is not in any way serious - this part, however, is (ish).
as much as we all love categorising media into neat little aesthetic categories à la tiktok and its constant outpour of increasingly niche aesthetics, whittling films and really any piece of media into just an aesthetic is, honestly, kind of strange.
yes, films can have elements that are inherently aesthetic. and, yes, tone and vibe does contribute heavily to a film's quality. but a film is so much more than just that.
i'm aware that a vast majority of people don't actually watch a film for solely its visual aestheticism. and i don't mean to attack anyone who watches a film simply because they are attracted to its aesthetic quality. i'd be lying if i said i haven't done that either.
okay, i give up on pseudo-analysis. i don't really know where this is going. i guess that's it from me.
xoxo
