The Crestone End of Life Project

At 8,000 feet in elevation, Crestone is a small, unique community nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of south central Colorado. Both beautiful and isolated, Crestone is a spiritual center that includes an astonishing array of sacred sites. Within walking distance of this international village are ashrams, monasteries, zendos, temples, chapels, retreat centers, stupas, shrines, medicine wheels, labyrinths, a ziggurat, and an outdoor cremation pyre.

The Crestone End of Life Project (CEOLP) operates one of the only legal, open-air cremation sites in the state of Colorado. Steeped in Hindu, Sikh, and Christian tradition, open-air cremations are rare ceremonies that bring an ancient tradition of disposition to western culture. This ancient and inspirational end-of-life choice returns the body to its original fire and air elements. The process involves a pyre, a half-cord of wood, a wooden stretcher and a shroud. The family or friends of the deceased work together with CEOLP staff to plan the ceremony, and various teams from the organization are trained to produce a deeply meaningful context for marking the passage of a loved one into death.

CEOLP offers a non-sectarian, community-driven ceremony where your body can be cremated outdoors in a fiery pyre. Conducting an open-air disposition begins with wrapping the body in a natural fabric shroud, which is placed on a wooden stretcher on a steel grate atop an outdoor hearth. Each member of the procession places a juniper branch on the body.

The fire reaches temperatures of over 1,500 degrees, consuming the body. What remains is about three gallons of ashes. The process of dissolution takes three hours, but more than 18 hours for the ashes to be cool enough to collect. Unfortunately for out-of-towners who want to have an open-air cremation, CEOLP's services are only available to local residents of Saguache County. Despite having a population of just 6,000 county residents, CEOLP still performs multiple open-air cremations every year for those who want a disposition ceremony performed by family, friends and community.

Missing Colorado Mother Suzanne Morphew's Remains Found in Shallow Grave In a somber development, the remains of Suzanne Morphew, a Colorado mother who went missing, were discovered in a shallow grave in Moffat, Colorado. Suzanne's husband, Barry Morphew, along with their two daughters, received this distressing news, which concluded a painful chapter in their lives. Authorities announced the discovery of Suzanne Morphew's remains approximately 45 miles away from her Maysville, Colorado, home. Contrary to previous assumptions, her remains were not found in the rocky, mountainous terrain surrounding her residence, but in a dry desert field of sagebrush and natural grasses. This heart-wrenching discovery unfolded as Saguache County Officials were searching for another missing woman, Edna Quintana. A coroner has confirmed the identity of the recovered remains as Suzanne Morphew. Disappearance and Legal Developments Suzanne Morphew, aged 49, went missing after embarking on a bike ride from her Colorado home. Her husband, Barry Morphew, reported her disappearance, sparking an extensive search. Her bike was found in a ravine near her home on Highway 50 and County Road 225. At the time, Barry was working in Broomfield, a Denver suburb. Barry Morphew faced murder and tampering with evidence charges in connection with Suzanne's disappearance in 2021. However, those charges were later dropped, with prosecutors citing the need for additional time to locate Suzanne's body. Subsequently, Barry filed a $15 million lawsuit against the prosecutors and investigators, alleging violations of his constitutional rights. Focus on Compassion Amid these legal twists and turns, it is crucial to remember the primary focus: the Morphew family has lost their beloved mother and wife after 3½ years of uncertainty. Attorney Iris Eytan emphasized the exhaustive scrutiny Barry endured throughout the investigation, including surveillance and electronic monitoring. Notably, no evidence of human remains or blood was found near the Morphew home or in their vehicles. While DNA was discovered on Suzanne's glovebox, it did not match Barry's DNA. Eytan urged officials to shift their attention to the broader context of missing persons and human remains found in Saguache County. Broader Context Saguache County has seen its share of missing persons and unidentified remains. Suzanne Morphew's case is just one of several in the region, including the recent discoveries of another unidentified individual and Kristal Reisinger, in addition to the ongoing search for Edna Quintana. Folding bikes these are smaller bikes that fold up, making them easier to bring along for traveling. They take up minimal storage space

Bike accessories

The category of bike accessories is a wide one. Some of the most important are locks, baskets, bells, pumps, trailers and carrier racks. Bike helmets, protective gear and clothing

Falls from a bicycle can be painful. To prevent potentially serious injuries, it\'s an excellent idea to wear a helmet and other protective gear. There are helmets for men, women and children, and they come in all kinds of colors and designs. Helmet sizes range from 0 to 12 months of age to children\'s designs to larger models meant for riders 12 years of age and up. Other protective gear includes knee pads and gloves, and these are also sized by age.

Bicycle clothing options include jerseys, shorts, safety vests, underwear, leg warmers and socks. These are also available in men\'s, women\'s and children\'s sizes. Jerseys are breathable, and many wick away moisture. Cycling underwear and shorts often have additional padding to help with long rides. Leg warmers keep riders\' legs from being exposed to cooler weather, while socks keep riders\' feet cool and dry.

#TravelTuesday: The Salida Mountain Trail System in Colorado

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM)-managed Salida Mountain Trail System provides a true backyard to backcountry experience. These are the closest trails to downtown Salida and remain snow-free for the majority of the winter season, providing year round riding experiences. The trail system is a stacked loop design, with the more challenging trails higher in altitude and farther out from the trailheads. The trail system provides stunning views of the Continental Divide/Saguache Range and the Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges. The Salida Mountain Trails volunteer organization has partnered with the BLM and the city of Salida to build and rehabilitate this stacked system of environmentally sustainable trails.

May marks National Bike Month. Each week throughout the month of May, the BLM will showcase public lands with premier biking opportunities.

Snow-capped Mountain Range .. [2 / 2] The Rocky Mountains rising up near Saguache, CO. Patterns repeat halfway across the Earth. Compare the Hindu Kush, which shows a remarkable similarity of pattern. The only difference, as far as I can tell, is that the Rockies were about a mile further away from the airplane.
