Gravity Waves .. [4 / 4]
Whipped up by wind on the beach at Old Fisherman's Wharf, Monterey, CA.
Pet peeve: when someone says Gravity Wave when they mean Gravitational Wave. Gravitational waves are propagations of distortions in space-time. Gravity waves are waves generated at the interface of gravitationally stratified fluids.

Homeland, Blue and White
Sculpture at Peabody Essex museum, Salem, MA.
BOUKE DE VRIES Born 1960, the Netherlands Homeland, Blue and White, 2015 17th- and 18th-century Asian porcelain and Dutch delftware fragments Tin-glazed earthenware was serious business for Dutch potters, who could not figure out how to replicate Asian porcelain. This locally produced ceramic looked like porcelain but cost less and sold well. By the 1650s tin-glazed earthenware was made primarily in Delft, hence the name "delftware." This map by Dutch artist and ceramics conservator Bouke de Vries visualizes the porcelain craze that swept the Netherlands in the 1600s. Fragments of porcelain and delftware cover every bit of the country, reflecting ceramics' importance in the Netherlands and the mania it fueled.

A thousand years and a thousand again: from shard to Shard .. [2 / 2]
Roman era city walls of Londonium on the left, with the modern day Shard looming in the background at right. On the premises of the Tower of London, London, UK.
ROMAN CITY WALL The Roman city wall of London was built in the late 2nd or early 3rd century. A small turret on the inner side of the wall marked a change in its direction at this point. Later an external bastion replaced the internal turret. William the Conqueror used the Roman Wall here to form the eastern side of his castle. In the 12th century the Wardrobe Tower was built on the remains of the late Roman bastion. Subsequently a large medieval building was built running northwards enclosing a narrow court between it and the White Tower. The building was demolished in 1879.

The Maltese Cannon
On the premises of the Tower of London, London, UK.
Cast Iron 12-pounder Gun This gun, which weighs 5¾ tons (5842 kg), was commissioned by the Knights of Malta. It is richly decorated with a variety of images representing the Order's religious and humanitarian role. It was brought to England around 1800 and transferred from the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich to the Tower in 1962. John Hall of Dartford, Kent, made the gun carriage in 1827 on the orders of the Duke of Wellington, Master General of the Ordnance. It shows the arms of Malta and scenes from the island's history. An iron quoin in the shape of a Maltese dog supports the gun's breech. The gun and carriage were conserved at Royal Armouries Fort Nelson in 2003-4. Probably Flemish, dated 1607. Carriage, British 1827

ObShadow .. [3 / 3]
Every time there is a solar eclipse, it is obligatory to show a picture of the pinhole distortions of the shadows through trees. This one, from April 8, 2024, happened before the leaves came back, so the distortions you see are a little more otherworldly.
