What did Sagewhisker do? All I remember was that she was Yellowfang's mentor, and I used to love YS. (I was a lot younger at the time, though.)
oH Lord, a lot of people who read YS when they were younger kinda don't pick up on how shitty Sagewhisker is. It goes over their heads that she is the one who's actually responsible for Yellowfang being forced to be distant from Brokenkit
From a young age, Sagewhisker is pressuring Yellowpaw to be a medcat, when she doesn't want to
Yellow LIKES the satisfaction of healing itself, but LOVES being a warrior more.
She's a fantastic hunter, has always wanted a family, and is just genuinely filled with a lot of self-satisfaction when she gets to do her warrior duties.
(They also had to retcon the stupidest magic power, super-empathy, into Yellowfang so that she nonsensically wouldn't like fighting. Yellowfang. The cat whose first appearance in TPB is attacking Firepaw and didn't hesitate to blind Brokenstar. THAT Yellowfang.)
In contrast, when she starts healing, she's constantly filled with shame or horror. She also gets bullied viciously by several cats, while others do that Thing that an older family member does when they don't like what you're doing. You know;
"Ohhh that's so good, for you. If it makes you happy it's good!! I mean, but, wouldn't you rather do Other Thing? I mean no, I understand, you like This thing, but Other thing would... no no it's okay, nevermind. I'm happy for you."
This while she's already courting Raggedpelt, and planning a future with him.
So to begin with, she has a lot of negative feelings when Sagewhisker tries to pressure her into this role, especially as Sage insists she "Wants HER" and "It's your destiny." But that's not all;
When Cloudpaw (later Cloudpelt) gets viciously mauled and might not survive, Sagewhisker takes one look and says, "It might be kinder to let StarClan take him now."
Yellowfang is FURIOUS at how quickly Sagewhisker gave up, and Sage just waves this away with "oh I won't stop you but be prepared for heartbreak lol"
Sage continues to tell her shit like "You can't save every cat" after Cloudpaw's mother sees her son all cheese-grated up.
So... either Sagewhisker was going to just leave Cloudpaw there to bleed out or die of infection, OR she was implying euthanasia.
And it's probably euthanasia, because when Yellowfang is pregnant later, she says,
Tumblr media
Sooooo... considering how WEIRD WC generally is about abortion, acting like it's not even an option and giving Clear Sky some Angel Fetus Children in DOTC...
Sagewhisker was probably implying that Yellowfang would smother infants. Or do whatever Sagewhisker was planning to do with Cloudpaw.
I don't even know if pressuring Yellowfang into an abortion would have been better... honestly this exchange is uncomfortable no matter how you slice it.
It gets worse ofc. Yellowfang gets this warning from StarClan about how “Only one thing can stop the tide of hatred this birth cursed cat will bring: the courage of a mother to know her destiny.” Silverflame also suggests just being his friend, if she can't be his mother.
Forget that though, because Sagewhisker continues to snap at Yellowfang and remind her that she can't look at him for too long, else people will get suspicious or something.
Tumblr media
"It's a woman's responsibility to have children for our glorious war society, Yellowfang, unless they have A RARE GIFT THAT MUST NOT BE WASTED."
In the same conversation she's then like, "Also don't go into the nursery, the child I forced you to give up needs a chance to bond with the abusive foster who hates his little guts."
In general Sagewhisker also prevents Yellowfang from standing up for herself or her position in a way that is absolutely infuriating. Foxheart comes in and starts bellowing about "HOW DARE YOU HAVE APPRENTICES RUN ERRANDS FOR YOU?" and Sage is just like, "Turn the other cheek uwu"
Yellowfang is punished constantly for the sin of being Yellowfang. She is not allowed to be snarky at all. It fucking sucks. This book is MISERABLE
SO basically, Sagewhisker forces her into a role she isn't very happy in, stops her from standing up for herself ever, guilts Yellowfang over "wasting her special gift," gives up on cases that are too hard for her, suggests killing kits, says some wildly misogynistic stuff, prevents Yellowfang from doing anything about Brokenkit, and then dies.
She's the worst and no one ever talks about how fucked up this character is. and I really mean AS A CHARACTER
Because her PURPOSE in the story is to do all of these things and be hailed as a good mentor in the end. But the fandom is REALLY bad at analyzing characters as narrative tools.
She's right to pressure Yellowfang into her role, with the ending comic even trying to have Sagewhisker apologize for pressuring her and Yellow going "d'aww dwai you didn't force me into anything 8) ignore the entire fucking book before this point"
Giving up on a battered teenager is supposed to show Yellowfang's talent and resolve, not reflect poorly on Sagewhisker.
WC fully believes that "wisdom" she espouses about Lizardfang. Lizardfang is a bad woman because she doesn't accept her place as a queen. This kind of guilt and blame is reserved exclusively for mothers in WC, not fathers, note how Mudclaw doesn't help at all but no one gives a shit.
Killing the baby would have been the best option because, again, Brokenkit is BORN. EVIL.
I'm pretty convinced that "Courage of a mother to KNOW HER DESTINY" refers to the fact she is supposed to be a medcat, who kills her child. What FINALLY ends Brokenstar's reign of terror is being poisoned-- not the kindness she was finally able to show him in TPB while he was prisoner.
So Sagewhisker guilt-tripping Yellowfang into a position she doesn't like, keeping her away from her child, suggesting murdering the baby... that's all good, actually. That's something that is framed as correct.
And I think people really sleep on it. Sagewhisker is like this perfect little encapsulation of how shitty clan culture is in WC, an enforcer of the series' misogyny while being a woman herself, someone who makes Yellowfang's wife HELL.
But because she didn't do it violently, no one notices it.

yellowfang thoughts
the more i think about it, the more i realize how much of a deeply, deeply tragic character yellowfang is. everyone talks about how much she fucking sucks after she becomes a starclan cat, and they’re absolutely correct; she goes from the cool grouchy grandma to a complete fucking hypocrite. and for the longest time i thought this was completely OOC for her, but it recently hit me over the head that it might not be. to say that this change in character was intentional would be giving the erins WAY too much credit knowing who they are, but the more you think about her life and what she went through, the more it makes sense in a twisted sort of way.
starclan forced her into a life she never wanted. she wants to train as a warrior, but she is cursed with the power to feel other cats’ physical pain and badgered into becoming a medicine cat by sagewhisker until she gives in. she falls in love with raggedstar, but as as soon as things go south for her he offers no support. when she dares to go against the destiny that was laid out for her, when she continues to meet with him and becomes pregnant by him, starclan punishes her; not just by having two of her kits die, but by condemning the surviving kit to become a tyrant and a child murderer. he turns against his parents; he kills his father and frames his mother for his own crimes not knowing who she truly is, and yellowfang is forced to watch this all unfold from a distance, unable to tell her son the truth and wondering how things could be different if he knew. and finally, for the good of the clans, she has no other choice but to rip out his eyes and then poison him. her own son, the kit she herself bore, dead at her own claws. a cruel twist of fate for a cat who never wanted any of this, who just wanted her own life.
so by the time she gets to starclan, her experiences have changed her. so many innocent lives were lost and the clans were nearly destroyed because she disobeyed, because she went against their will. she even forgives sagewhisker for being so shitty to her because now she’s convinced that she was the one in the wrong and her mentor, a messenger for starclan, was acting in her best interests all along. she’s become so thoroughly traumatized by everything she went through that she decides she cannot let another cat experience what she experienced. now that she’s a part of starclan, she has the power to prevent something like this from ever happening again. but that’s just the thing. she’s a part of starclan. she’s a part of the system now; the very same system that screwed her over. and the system chews people up and spits them out until they become just another cog in the machine. so instead of going to the root of the problem and questioning the level of influence starclan has over living cats, she not only perpetuates the cycle but becomes an active participant in it.
and because firestar is the son she should have had, she sets her sights on his descendants.
she cannot prevent leafpool from bearing kits, as these kits have their own destiny they must fulfill. so she tells leafpool she must give up her kits, just as she had to. she lies to squirrelflight that she will never have kits of her own and that the three are her only chance to be a mother so that she will take them in. when they arrive in starclan moons later, she and others have the audacity to judge whether they are worthy to join their ranks or should be damned to the dark forest for their actions when they not only did exactly what they were told to do, but did the same things that she did and still went to starclan for (though to give her some credit, she is at least more sympathetic than the other judges and even defends them; perhaps out of guilt?). she allows ashfur into starclan on the basis that he “loved too much,” because her relationship with raggedstar warped her view of what healthy love should look like. she forces the kin of firestar’s kin—namely, jayfeather and dovewing—into destinies they want no part of; they’ll learn to love it, just like she did.
and she thinks she’s doing the right thing. she’s learned the hard way that going against starclan will only lead to more suffering. she’s convinced that she’s helping them, that by acting this way she will be able to prevent them from making the same mistakes that she made. but she cannot see that she is only inflicting on other cats the exact same suffering that starclan inflicted on her.
and if that isn’t tragic, i don’t know what is

Sagewhisker! On my original read of Yellowfang's SE I resented the way they wrote Sagewhisker and how she seemed to pressure Yellowfang into becoming a medicine cat. But almost all medcine cat mentors have been written with a 'this is your destiny' mindset so, the issues I have are more systemic and less about this one cat. Beyond that Sage is a seasoned and confident medicine cat, who quickly figures out Yellowkit feels the ailments of her clanmates, and uses Yellowfang as a triage machine to sort out which clanmate to treat first, which is admittedly, kind of funny. They have a decent practical friendship both she cats having their own brand of snark, and she keeps Yellowfang's confidence about Brokenkit even if she disapproves. She dies of a heart attack, and gives Brokenstar his final life for compassion.

I was just thinking of the scene in Eclipse where Leafpool and Jaypaw discuss it, so I was wondering, what do the Clans think of euthanasia? In canon ShadowClan does it but ThunderClan thinks StarClan decides when a cat would die and I was wondering how you would handle this in your rewrite.
Every time it comes up in canon, it gives me less confidence that it has any place in my rewrite tbh
(CW: Animal death, convulsions, poisoning, Sagewhisker generally being a horrible person, euthanasia, what you'd expect from this convo really)
We're told it's only used to "save a cat from a lingering death" but in-canon it's been actively considered four times that I can remember;
Sagewhisker implying Yellowfang could kill her unwanted children (sincerely sagewhisker what the fuck)
Cloudpelt's injury as an apprentice (why is sagewhisker so horrible?!)
Brokenstar, of course
Hollyleaf telling Leafpool to kill herself
All of these times were loathsome! If anything it looks more like it's considered out of spite or convenience, not once has it ever come up as real mercy.
And we HAVE seen what death by yew berries looks like in comparison; Brokenstar went into convulsions and Sorrelkit, a small child who should have logically been killed quickly based on how much she ate, suffered in agony and survived.
Thankfully Cinderpelt was able to get yarrow into her almost immediately so she threw it up, but it still suggests these aren't as "quick and painless" as the medicine cats imply. Every time we've seen a deathberry poisoning on-screen, it's painful and traumatic.
(And deathberries are even worse in my rewrite, since Bonefall Sorreltail walks away from this with lasting neurological damage.)
So the logistics of poisoning aside, it's like... why even keep it, y'know? Sure as a writer I could make deathberry poisoning less painful, and there are more types of illness now that could warrant euthanasia consideration (like Hazeltail's accidental hyperthyroidism), but, I'm rewriting the Clans into a culture where the scars you earn from hard-fought battles are a point of pride.
Why would the clans want to take that from a warrior? The chance to fight and win their lives? Philosophically speaking, could that not be considered breaking the Right of Challenge?
I'm sure it does happen occasionally though, and a medicine cat euthanizes a suffering warrior... secretly. Euthanasia and other types of poisonings are the sort of skill taught by Dark Forest medics, not casually passed from mentor to apprentice.
No more "ShadowClan is the evil Clan so they're more Morally Ambiguous than everyone else" stuff
Yellowfang probably picked it up from Runningnose's killing of Marigoldkit, or simply realized it would be an easy way to secretly end his life. She's smart enough to just have that idea on her own, really.
Yew berries might be used to kill foxes and problem corvids though, particularly ones that start stealing and are too crafty to catch.

☯️? (if you aren't doing the whole ask thing then feel free to ignore this!)
☯️ : what dynamic between two cats has got you up at night pacing for hours? (romantic, platonic, familial, etc)
Picking Goosefeather vs All Of Starclan is too easy...
So, how about Yellowfang and Brokenstar?
Brokenstar was born of a curse, and in all of Yellowfang's dreams, she saw herself nursing 3 healthy babies. She felt all 3 moving around before giving birth, which tells me that Wishkit and Hopekit were supposed to make it but... None of them had a single choice in their fates. Least of all Broken and Yellow.
From Yellowfang we have: Who could you have been? Do you miss me? Do you know you have sisters? Would you have grown up differently if I had done xyz? Do you resent me? Can you feel other cats pain like I can? Did I do badly? Should I have brought you somewhere else? Should I have let you die? Do you feel anything for me? Why did you turn out the way you did? Could I have stopped it? Why are you hurting kits?
In the end... Did she put him down out of hatred for what he was, ending a monstrous legacy caused by an injustice from long before her birth? Or did she put him down the same way you put down your beloved pet dog that's caught rabies that you can't bare to watch in pain any longer? Did her hatred for him finally reach a breaking point? Or did she love him enough to kill him?
Does Yellowfang still think about Brokenstar and see that tiny, helpless scrap of brown fur crying for his first meal in the tree hollow
On Brokenstar's side we have.... Who are you? Did you name me or did dad name me? Why did you give me up? Why didn't you fight for me? (Not that Yellowfang is to blame let me be clear) If you did, who made you give me up? Did you want to even have kits in the first place? Did you watch over me all the time? Did you want me to be your apprentice? Why was dad always so angry with you? Did I ever make you proud? Do you miss me? What did you imagine for me? Do you love me? Do you still love me? Did you want to be my mother? Would you still want to?
There is so much potential here, I love them both, especially when you see them as foils. Brokenstar was LAUNCHED into power he didn't deserve and praised for hurting others. Yellowfang was forced into her position she didn't originally want because she couldn't stop feeling the pain of others. He was given anything he wanted but it never made him happy, she was constantly having anything she loved that made her happy taken away.
And, on a hilariously sad note, all of it could have been avoided if Sagewhisker wasn't so god damn pushy.
