*Note: This post isn't about if this Ken in the Barbie movie is going to be queer but that he is inspired by a Ken doll that "accidently" became a queer icon. Ryan Gosling's Ken in Barbie(2023) is based on the famous best selling Ken doll, Earring Magic Ken, also know as Fey Ken or Gay Ken.
"Mattel had conducted a survey of girls asking if Ken should be retained as Barbie's boyfriend or whether a new doll should be introduced in that role. Survey results indicated that girls wanted Ken kept but wanted him to look "cooler". USA Today noted after the American International Toy Fair that the doll Soul Train Jamal was also wearing an earring that year. According to manager of marketing communications for Mattel, Lisa McKendall, "We tried to keep [Ken] as cool as possible." This generation of the Ken doll had blond highlights in his traditionally brown hair and was dressed in a lavender mesh shirt, purple pleather vest, a necklace with a circular charm and, as the name indicates, an earring in his left ear.
These clothing choices led to gay commentator Dan Savage joking that Mattel toy designers had "spent a weekend in LA or New York dashing from rave to rave, taking notes and Polaroids." He also suggested that little girls' idea of coolness was shaped by homoerotic MTV music videos, Madonna's dancers, and what ACT UP/Queer Nation members were wearing to demonstrations and parties. Donna Gibbs told the San Francisco Examiner in November 1993 that the team of (presumably straight) women who made the doll were surprised that gay men wanted him.
[...]
In July 1993, Dan Savage wrote an article on Earring Magic Ken titled, "Ken Comes Out." He noted in his article that, in addition to his outfit's perceived flamboyance, his necklace resembled chrome sex toys that queer people were wearing as charms at the time. Savage expressed feelings of ambivalence about Ken's new style, writing, "Queer Ken is the high water mark of, depending on your point of view, either queer infiltration of popular culture or the thoughtless appropriation of queer culture by heterosexuals [. . .] Queer imagery has so permeated our culture that from rock stars (Axl Rose and his leather chaps) to toy designers, mainstream America isn’t even aware when it’s adopting queer fashions and mores."
[...]
Kitsch-minded gay men responded to this press by buying the doll in record numbers, making Earring Magic Ken the best-selling Ken model in Mattel's history. The doll debuted in stores for around $11 (equivalent to $20.63 in 2021) and had completely sold out by the Christmas season, largely due to gay men buying the doll in droves. Due to high demand, Chicago's FAO Schwartz created a wait list, and, allegedly, some shops in San Francisco began to sell Earring Magic Ken for prices ranging between $17 (equivalent to $31.89 in 2021) to $24 (equivalent to $45.02 in 2021). (The latter claim was disputed in the Bay Area Reporter in October 1993 by the general manager of San Francisco FAO Schwartz. According to him, only a few gay men were coming into his store, and Earring Magic Ken was selling better in New York and Chicago than San Francisco.) Earring Magic Ken was also popular with gay men in the United Kingdom, and sold well at the toy shop Hamleys in 1993. Toy scalper Mr. Barger told the Wall Street Journal in 1996 that Earring Magic Ken was so popular that he was able to re-sell him to specialty shops at premium prices. Richard Roeper, writing for the Chicago Sun Times, referred to him as "The Cabbage Patch Doll of the summer of '93."
A major appeal of the doll for many gay men was that Mattel did not market it to them on purpose. Rick Garcia, director of Chicago's Catholic Advocates for Lesbian and Gay Rights, told People magazine in 1993 that the stereotypical dress was funny to him because he believed it was an accident, and that it would have offended him if it was purposeful. In 1993, many newspapers interviewed individual gay men in California to understand the phenomenon. San Francisco resident described Earring Magic Ken as, "a pariah setting foot in one of America's sanctuaries." Another California resident, Bill Harley, described Earring Magic Ken as, "A campy, funny thing to have." Laguna Beach resident Keith Clark-Epley had more reservations about the toy, saying that, "It's an uptight heterosexual male doll following gay fashion and who is still behind the times," and believed that calling the doll gay could potentially reinforce negative stereotypes about gay people." [Dolls, Barbie] The Short Yet Fabulous Life of Earring Magic Ken
Or, that time Mattel gave Ken a cock ring and created a legend.
This is my first time writing a post here, but this story has made me laugh for years now, so I'm excited to share it with all of you. I'll have my sources listed at the bottom of the post. If I get anything wrong or miss any crucial details, please let me know and I'll edit the post.
Anyway! Gather 'round for a tale of marketing, frosted tips, and kitsch.
# Who is Ken?
Ken, full name Kenneth Sean Carson, is a fictional character and fashion doll sold by Mattel. If you know who he is, you probably know him as "Barbie's boyfriend," and that's because that's exactly what he is. Barbie is *the* fashion doll, easily the most iconic doll in America and one of the most famous toys... ever. She's had hundreds of careers and thousands of iconic fashion looks, and has appeared in a wide variety of media, including a movie coming out July 2023 where she's played by Margot Robbie. Barbie is The Legend. Ken, while not quite as famous as she is, does have a lot of name recognition - at least, while he's standing next to Barbie.
While various toys and tie-in media has depicted their relationship in various ways (coworkers, serious committed couple, childhood besties, friends with a mutual crush they're both too shy to act on, sometimes they're even married), Ken is Barbie's primary love interest, male companion, and boytoy/trophy husband. (Okay, okay, to give the guy some credit, he's had 40ish careers since his introduction. Not quite as impressive as Barbie's resume, but then again, few things are.)
Ken debuted in 1961, two years after Barbie, both characters invented by Ruth Handler. (Fun fact: just as Barbie was named after Ruth's daughter Barbara "Barbie" Handler, Ken was named after her son. Feels a little weird to name love interests after a pair of siblings, but it is a cute tribute.) Ken dolls tend to be less detailed and complex than Barbie dolls. Ken dolls, especially in the early days, didn't always have bendable limbs or torsos, and in general there's less clothing options available for them. One fun fact is that while the first Kens had felt hair, after a couple years, he started having molded plastic hair, rather than the brushable synthetic hair Barbie had.
Barbie at her core is a feminine power fantasy, and Ken is very much part of that. If Barbie is meant to emulate who the little girl playing with her wants to be, Ken is meant to emulate that girl's ideal boyfriend. (Of course, not everyone who played with Barbie is a girl or wants a boyfriend - a young not-yet-realized queer kid, I thought Ken was boring as hell and never wanted one; I was perfectly happy to have my Barbies living in a vaguely gay girls-only castle going on adventures.) He's handsome in the blandest way possible, and always dressed to the nines, and if you buy a Barbie and Ken doll that are packaged together, or a set of clothes for both dolls, Ken's clothes will always match and complement Barbie's.
So, that's Ken. Handsome, well-liked, presumably rich, multitalented and with the world's most beautiful and accomplished woman as his adoring girlfriend. He's even going to be played by Ryan Gosling in the upcoming movie! Let's be real - Ken's got it made. Why would anyone want to shake things up?
# "Cooler"
Well, like I said before, Ken just isn't as impressive or #iconic as Barbie. He's not as sparkly or fun or memorable, and is often more of an accessory than a character. There's a reason the meme of the moment is "Barbie is everything. He's just Ken." That has been their dynamic for decades, and Ryan Gosling GETS it. Lots of kids ask for a new Barbie for Christmas, and can often point to one or three or seven specific Barbies they want - but how many ask for a Ken? Apparently, this showed up in the sales numbers, too.
So, in the early 1990s, Mattel sets out to find out what they can do to make Ken more popular - or if he should even stay at all. Yes, you read that right, Mattel was considering getting rid of Barbie's boyfriend altogether. So, what do you do when you want to find out what your demographic will buy? You ask them what they like! Working with a focus group of 5-year-old girls, Mattel asked them what they wanted, and what would make them like Ken more. Should Barbie dump Ken for someone more hip with the kids?
The girls responded with, no! They liked Ken! Barbie should definitely stay with Ken. Phew! The then-thirty year old romance was saved.
(This would not, however, be the last time Ken would be on the chopping block - anyone growing up in the early-to-mid 2000s like I did who was into Barbies likely remembers the tragic but ultimately temporary breakup between Barbie and Ken, during which Barbie dated an Australian surfer named Blaine. But that's a different story.)
But, the girls said, they did wish Ken was... cooler.
"Make it cooler" is quite possibly the least helpful bit of advice ever, right up there with "do what feels right" and "take that business opportunity from your high school friend." There's a reason there was a My Little Pony meme about this.
But, okay, the girls said they wanted cooler. Mattel could do that. They could totally do that. They knew what was cool.
Right?
# The Makeover
How exactly the Mattel execs collected their coolness data is unclear. This was pre-social media, so figuring out the hottest trends wasn't as simple as opening TikTok and scrolling until you have 4 new insecurities. Most sources I've looked at seems to agree that what *probably* happened is that Mattel looked at what little girls found cool - aka, singers on MTV, dressed in bright colors and funky jewelry - and also did some research to find out what the hot trends are. And where do you go to find the hot trends? Go to the hot clubs! It's worth noting that we can't be 100% sure, because Mattel hasn't ever talked about the process behind creating Earring Magic Ken. Actually, they don't like to talk about him much at all. Strange.
What we do know is that within two years of the focus group, Mattel had given Ken a makeover. You can check out Ken's look [here](https://www.nyhistory.org/blogs/earring-ken-proud-billy-new-york-historical-celebrates-pride-two-new-acquisitions), but I'll break down the basics.
First, he had platinum blonde highlights. And he was wearing a leather(?) purple vest over a mesh purple top in a look that I'd describe as "so tacky it circles back around into being kind of awesome." Like Tyler Durden's fur coat and bright orange pants. The key is confidence!
Per the name, Ken also has an earring in his left ear. Interestingly, Mattel *did* expect some pushback from this line, but they thought it'd be about the earring, which in hindsight is hilarious. But it does make sense from their perspective; in the early 90s, men wearing earrings wasn't exactly mainstream or accepted fashion. But, times were changing, Mattel reasoned. You see more and more guys wearing earrings nowadays, and Ken should keep up with the times. People might complain, but so what? Little girls would love it.
The most important detail to note for our story is Ken's necklace; a long chain with a big, silver ring on it. Now, Mattel will swear up and down that the ring is meant to match Barbie's accessories - he can even wear some of the charms from her bracelet on his necklace, how cute! And, to be fair, all the Barbies in the line wear rings like this, too, on their belts.
Mattel had *greatly* misunderstood those pretty necklaces that some guys were wearing out to the club. But they didn't know that yet. (As I stated in the Hobby Scuffles thread, there must've been at least one employee - probably several - who *did* know that and could make a couple predictions about how this was gonna go, but they couldn't say anything without explaining *why* they knew that. Or maybe they just thought, "Oh, this will be *hilarious*.")
Earring Magic Ken was released in 1993.
# Ken-sation!
Honestly, whoever set up that focus group with those little girls must've been spiking the football when Earring Magic Ken hit the shelves. Because the grand plan to make Ken cooler and sell more toys? Reader, it fucking *worked*.
Earring Magic Ken was not a standalone doll, but rather, a one in a collection of six. The "Earring Magic" collection featured Barbie and her friends in bold, bright colors, with their hair done up in big bouncy curls, with flashy, sparkly earrings. You can check out the other dolls [here](https://www.flickr.com/photos/20837663@N08/4671335912). (Wikipedia says it was six dolls, but for the life of me I cannot find a picture with all six dolls in it, so unless someone has one they'd like to drop in the comments, you'll have to settle for five.) Each doll comes with a pair of clip-on earrings for the owner to wear and match with their doll.
By all accounts, all the dolls in the line sold well, but none more so than Ken. I have to imagine they were pouring the champagne over at Mattel - the line was doing great, and for the first time ever, Ken was outselling Barbie. Hell, they couldn't keep that doll stocked!
Earring Magic Ken was the bestselling Ken doll of all time when he came out, pun intended. (Whether or not he still is is unknown.) He was inevitably the butt of some gay jokes; a man wearing an earring? Absurd! Frosted tips? Hilarious! A mesh top? Get out of here! In many ways, it was the same kind of jokes late night hosts would crack about male pop stars who dressed flamboyantly. Annoying to some, sure, definitely at least slightly homophobic, but ultimately, nothing Mattel didn't probably see coming. And, hey, kids clearly loved Ken's new look. They were raking in the cash, so what did they care what adults had to say?
And then one man, like the child who finally points out that the emperor is naked, was brave enough to stand alone with his head held high. And he said:
"That doll is wearing a fucking cock ring."
# People Notice the Cock Ring
I didn't know until I started research for this post that the "whistleblower" as it were in this whole rainbow debacle was Dan Savage. But now that I do know that, I am not even slightly surprised. Like of course it was him. For those of you who don't know who he is, Dan Savage is a relationship/sex advice columnist. He's openly gay and known for being very sardonic, very blunt, and, depending on who you ask, very funny or very obnoxious. Sometimes both. His column, Savage Love, has been going since 1991, and he also has a podcast by the same name. (He also started the It Gets Better Project, which is neat.) To give you an idea of his general vibe, his catchphrase is "dump the motherfucker already," aka DTMFA.
It really is no surprise to me that when Dan Savage sees "cock ring," he *says* "cock ring."
See, Ken's outfit wasn't just any old clubwear. It was *gay* clubwear. It was stuff that gay men were wearing to raves and nightclubs and parties.
And that necklace? Yeah, that circular "pendant" would be a cock ring. As u/ginganinja2507 put it in 4/10/23's Hobby Scuffles thread: *"yeah if it had been barbie finger sized it would've probably not raised any eyebrows but it is. not that size."*
Obviously, Dan was not literally the first person to notice this, but his article helped bring the conversation from "this doll looks kinda gay with his vest and his earring" to "no, y'all, this doll is literally wearing a gay sex toy. He's gay."
The irony that this doll with no genitalia was wearing a cock ring was lost on nobody.
I'll let Dan himself explain, in his article "Ken Comes Out." I linked to the article in my sources below if you want to read the whole thing.
>*When they’re not fashion statements, cock rings are worn around the base of your cock or your close personal friend’s cock if you don’t have one of your own. Slip one on when you’re soft; once you’re hard, it traps blood in the penis, increasing sensitivity and prolonging orgasm.*
>
>*Chrome cock rings like Ken’s were long worn by the leather crowd on the shoulders of their biker jackets (left for top, right for bottom). In the waning years of our long national nightmare (aka the Reagan-Bush years), younger gay-boy-activist types with brand-new leather jackets took to wearing cock rings on whichever side looked best or, to the horror of the leather crowd, on both sides. Tops? Bottoms? Versatile? Clueless? Who knew? Then dykes started wearing them—cocks or not, they didn’t want to miss out on any of the sex-positive accessorizing.*
>
>*Cock rings exploded (ouch!)—as vest zipper pulls, as key rings, as bracelets; rubber ones, leather ones, chain ones. But the thick chrome variety, the Classic Coke of cock rings, was and is most often worn as a pendant. Chrome cock ring necklaces became de rigueur rave wear. For about a year every gay boy at a rave was wearing at least one—these cock rings were often pressed into service later in the evening, to help totally tweaked ravers keep up what the X was pulling down.*
>
>*On closer inspection, Ken’s entire Earring Magic outfit turns out to be three-year-old rave wear. A purple faux-leather Gaultier vest, a straight-out-of-International Male purple mesh shirt, black jeans and shoes. It would seem Mattel’s crack Ken-redesign team spent a weekend in LA or New York dashing from rave to rave, taking notes and Polaroids.*
What I find especially funny about this is the fact that Ken wasn't just wearing gay clubwear, but *outdated* gay clubwear. I feel like Barbie would be more affronted by that than anything.
So, a lot of those astronomical sales turns out to have come from adults buying the doll not for a kid, but for themselves. This is nothing new; loads of adults collect fashion dolls, either because they find a specific doll really beautiful or interesting, or they consider it to be culturally significant, or it has a schtick or branding that aligns with another interest of theirs. In this case, a lot of the buyers were gay men, who found the doll hilarious and honestly, kind of iconic. (In a bit of anecdotal evidence, my mom, who's always had a lot of queer friends and remembers when this all went down, says she knew gay men who owned multiple "Cock Ring Kens." I assume some were given as gifts, but I also know people who would definitely have, like, four of these guys around just for the hell of it.)
It's worth noting that Ken, to quote Savage again, "always read kind of gay." I'm guessing it's a combination of the fact that Ken often wears soft, pastel colors (to compliment Barbie!), rides around in a pink sports car (he's a passenger princess!), and, well, look at that hair. I've always seen jokes about how Barbie is Ken's beard... or maybe they're each other's beards.
While some of this is pure "haha, man cares about appearance is gay! Children's characters being gay is funny!" coming from cishet people, I do know a lot of queer people (myself included) on social media who love Barbie and Ken, and consider them to be "ours," whether because Ken is a bit on the "meterosexual" side (to resurrect a term that died in 2008), or because Barbie is an ultra femme icon, or because of the campiness of the franchise, or because some of those direct-to-DVD Barbie movies are kind of sapphic (hello, Diamond Castle), or because the franchise was near and dear to us as children and we want to make it our own in adulthood. I think that's why Earring Magic Ken was such a hit; not just because of the inherent hilarity in Mattel unknowingly making Ken a gay club-goer, but because, in a batshit, accidental way fueled by capitalism, he *is* ours. I know I'd love to get my hands on one.
# The Aftermath
Obviously, once the alarm rang that Earring Magic Ken was getting the nickname Cock Ring Ken, and for good reason, Mattel issued an apology and the doll disappeared from shelves. Cowards!
EDIT: I originally said there was a recall, and many articles on this whole thing say this. However, as u/InevitableBohemian pointed out, it's hard if not impossible to pinpoint where that claim started, and no contemporary articles about a recall seem to be out there. It seems highly likely that the doll was simply discontinued and unsold dolls were pulled from shelves, but that the "recall" detail is an exaggeration.
They adamantly denied that they'd meant to put a cock ring on a Ken doll, because of course they did. To be clear, I do believe them - there's absolutely no way they would've let that go through on purpose. But it did give us this amazing quote from Lisa McKendall, who was working for Mattel's marketing department at the time.
>We’re not in the business of putting cock rings into the hands of little girls.
Incredible.
# The Legacy
Earring Magic Ken is still famous in the Barbie enthusiast community. It's one of the first stories you hear when you get into dolls as an adult collector/enthusiast, and these days, he's highly sought after. (As of this typing, a new Earring Magic Ken goes for $179 on ebay. A commentor on the lot said they have one, which they keep next to their Cher doll, which - amazing, incredible, no notes.) This is one of my favorite stories to tell to people who don't know much about dolls, so writing this up has been an absolute joy. I really hope this Ken gets a cameo or a reference in the movie, because it's such an iconic story and doll; it's just the right blend of camp, corporate cluelessness, funny, and audacious to be not just a memorable scandal, but one that's looked back on with fondness. (Seriously, it is so nice to talk about a drama where the worst outcome was some embarrassment.)
I think Dan Savage put it best:
> The little girls of our great nation wanted a hipper Ken, and Mattel gave them a hip Ken. A queer Ken.
He may have only been on shelves for six months, but Ken and his purple mesh shirt and his glorious, glorious cock ring will live on in our hearts forever. Amen.

8 Classic Books to Read Before They Become Movies and TV Shows
With themes as resonant as ever, narratives as timeless as they come, and characters that nestle into our hearts and minds, classic novels will always influence contemporary content. Whether using the basis of a tale to weave something more modern or directly adapting the source material, classic novels provide bottomless pools of inspiration for filmmakers. Here are the classics you should read before they become movies and TVshows.
‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’ | “The Captain’s Log” in ‘Dracula’
The Last Voyage of the Demeter is based on a single chapter — “The Captain’s Log” — from Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Stoker’s 1897 novel was not the first story about a blood-sucking vampire, as that honor belongs to Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1871 novel Carmilla. However, Stoker’s narrative has arguably influenced the vampiric landscape to a greater extent, as over 200 films have been made featuring The Count.
As for The  Last Voyage of the Demeter, the tale is set aboard the Russian Schooner Demeter —chartered to transport 24 unmarked crates of private cargo from Carpathia to London. The story will follow the seafarers aboard the ship who do all in their power to survive the voyage, as they are terrorized by a dark presence nightly. When the ship finally arrives at the harbor, there is no trace of the crew. André Øvredal (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, The Autopsy of Jane Doe) directs the upcoming film starring Corey Hawkins (The Walking Dead, In the Heights), Liam Cunningham (The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Clash of the Titans), and Aisling Franciosi (The Fall, The Nightingale). The Last Voyage of the Demeter will premiere in theaters on August 11, 2023.
‘A Haunting in Venice’ | ‘Hallowe’en Party’
A Haunting in Venice is an Agatha Christie adaptation with Detective Poirot at the helm once again. Following in the footsteps of Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, A Haunting in Venice sees Detective Poirot come out of retirement to solve the death of a man who lost his life during a seance.
Unlike the previous two murder mysteries directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh in the title role, this film will enter into the horror landscape, boasting jump scares, an eerie atmosphere, and quite the foreboding score. Inspired by Agatha Christie’s 1969 novel Hallowe’en Party, the sequel stars Kelly Reilly of Yellowstone, Jamie Dornan of the Fifty Shades trilogy, funny lady Tina Fey, and Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh. The film premiers in theaters on September 15, 2023.
‘Wonka’ | ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’
Though not a direct retelling of Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Wonka will serve as a prequel to the tale set forth in the Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp-led adaptations.
#WonkaMovie Director, Paul King hosted an early look at the new trailer 🤩
Are you ready to enter a world of pure imagination? pic.twitter.com/rCeiyQvRcC
— Warner Bros. UK (@WarnerBrosUK) July 6, 2023
The upcoming movie musical will trace Willy Wonka’s journey to becoming a famous chocolatier. Timothée Chalamet will take on the iconic cooky candyman, with Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Grant, Olivia Colman, and Ryan Gosling rounding out the primary all-star ensemble. Director Paul King (celebrated for his work on Paddington and Paddington 2) spearheads the film he co-wrote with Simon Farnaby (Ghosts, The Phantom of the Opera). The highly-anticipated fantasy is scheduled to premiere in theaters just in time for Christmas on December 15, 2023.
‘The Color Purple’ | ‘The Color Purple’
Nearly 40 years following the film that made Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg household names, The Color Purple will return to the silver screen with an all-star ensemble led by Fantasia, Taraji P. Henson, Ciara, Halle Bailey of the live-action The Little Mermaid, Corey Hawkins, and Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black).
The Color Purple, by Alice Walker, documents the trials, tribulations, and gradual triumph of Celie (Fantasia) — an African American teenager raised in rural Georgia. Celie narrates her experience via painful letters written to god in a story that examines race and racism, spirituality, self-realization, and more. The Color Purple is scheduled to premiere in theaters on December 18, 2023.
‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ | ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’
Edgar Allen Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher is one of the author’s most celebrated short stories. Though not exactly a book, its legacy warrants its place on this list, and you will find it in any notable collection of Poe’s works. Capitalizing on the eerie and medieval atmosphere akin to gothic fiction, the tale puts forth themes of isolation, family, and madness to lay the groundwork for the eventual collapse of a decaying mansion.
The story follows an unnamed narrator who is called to visit The House of Usher by his childhood friend, Roderick, who is slowly dying. The narrator, empathetic for a man on his deathbed, heads to the mansion (and stays longer than he should) out of respect for his childhood friend’s final wishes.
A few minutes ago we wrapped production on THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER, closing a huge chapter of my life. I've worked in Vancouver almost nonstop since BLY MANOR in 2019. We made 4 series in 3 years, only taking a short break for the COVID lockdown in early 2020.
— Mike Flanagan (@flanaganfilm) July 9, 2022
Mike Flanagan — the genius behind the Netflix adaptations of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, Stephen King’s Gerald’s Game, and Henry James’ Turn of the Screw (The Haunting of Bly Manor) — helms the upcoming series. Flanagan, in a manner similar to Quentin Tarantino, likes to call upon the same actors; thus, it should come as no surprise that this series will star Carla Gugino, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, and Annabeth Gish — all of whom have worked on multiple Flanagan productions. The series is expected to drop on Netflix in the fall of 2023.
‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’ | ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’
Originally scheduled to premiere in theaters this summer, the live-action retelling of the beloved children’s classic is now scheduled to premiere sometime in 2024. The story will follow Harold as he embarks on a magical mission with the help of his purple crayon.
While Sony has remained rather tight-lipped about who’s playing who in the upcoming film, we do know a handful of the A-listers set to take center stage. Zachary Levi, Zooey Deschanel, Ravi Patel (Animal Control, Come As You Are), and Camille Guaty (Prison Break, Daytime Divas) are all set to star in the film from Rio and Ice Age director Carlos Saldanha. Writers Dallas Clayton (An Awesome Book of Love) and David Guion and Michael Handelman — who worked together on Slumberland, Dinner for Schmucks, and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb — penned the screenplay/

— Harold and the Purple Crayon (@HaroldMovie) February 10, 2022
‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ | ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’
A movie in 2002. A British TV series in 1956. A TV miniseries in 1998. A 2023 ViX original series starring William Levy. And, now, an upcoming film from Director Matthieu Delaporte starring Pierre Niney (It Boy, Masquerade) in the title role. In short, The Count of Monte Cristo remains a timeless and captivating story from French author Alexandre Dumas.
The novel chronicles a man’s revenge-seeking journey following his escape from prison and contemplates themes of vengeance, mercy, justice, forgiveness, betrayal, transformation, power, and identity.
Screenwriters Delaporte and de La Patellière told Variety that their film, “will be told from the point of view of Edmond Dantès, the first French superhero, who steps from the light into the shadows, assuming the identity of masked avenger.” The film will premiere in French cinemas on October 23, 2024. An American release date — whether theatrical or streaming — has yet to be announced.
‘Lord of the Flies’ | ‘Lord of the Flies’
You have quite some time to read this William Golding classic — if you haven’t already read it as part of your high school literature requirements — as the BBC series was only just announced in April 2023. British playwright Jack Thorne (Best Interests, Help, Kir) will take on the challenging task of adapting this complex story, which relies heavily on symbolism and inner dialogue to establish conflicts and thematic undertones.
The BBC limited series will be the first-ever on-screen adaptation of Lord of the Flies, consisting of four one-hour episodes. The narrative follows a group of young boys who wind up stranded on a tropical island, giving rise to themes of civilization vs. savagery, power and control, loss of innocence, and more. A cast and release date have yet to be announced, but be sure to check back with Thought Catalog for updates.

There are plenty of guides to cocktails inspired by books and movies, but Cocktails of the Movies is distinctive in that its drink list isn’t just derived from puns on the films’ titles or even mere thematic connections. These are the drinks the characters are actually seen sipping, so the book amounts to a cultural history of cocktails.
In some cases, the drinks are famous enough that they didn’t need any cinematic boost, though it took some impressively close observation for author Will Francis to deduce that the martini Jack Nicholson sips in Batman (1989) is “wet,” with a two-to-one ratio of gin to vermouth. In other cases, it was the movies that made the drinks iconic: for example, the Dude’s signature white Russian in The Big Lebowski (1998). In the belated 2008 film adaptation of Sex and the City, Francis reminds us, the middle-aged characters toast the cosmos they popularized in their HBO days.
The book’s publication is timely, now that we’re all looking for ways to add a little excitement to watching yet another piece of streaming content. At your next virtual movie marathon, why not add some flamed zest to that old fashioned you’re creating to drink along with Ryan Gosling in Crazy Stupid Love (2011), or wake yourself up with a jolt by shooting an amber moon over brunch along with Sir John Gielgud in Murder on the Orient Express (1974)? While you’re riding the rails and cracking some eggs, you can also make a gin Alexander to warm your spirits as Bing Crosby and company sing about snow in White Christmas (1954).

Oh fun!
Buffy The Vampire Slayer (I hear the song every Halloween in a Halloween store and I love it)
Tumblr media
Season 3 being my favourite
youtube
Skins Series 1 & 2 (I have the song)
Tumblr media
youtube
True Blood (It made me SUPER uncomfortable for about two seasons before I got used to it but it’s such a great intro)
Tumblr media
Supernatural Seasons 1-7 (when I still watched. I used to always look forward to see what they’d do with the title cards).
Season 5 was my favourite title card
Tumblr media
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (OF COURSE)
Tumblr media
youtube
Friday Night Lights (it’s actually quite a sentimental opening and if I rewatch it, I will get misty-eyed)
Tumblr media
vimeo
Not TV but I have to put the Harry Potter title cards (especially if Hedwig’s theme is play, I nearly RIOTED during the Half-Blood Prince when we don’t hear it)
Tumblr media
My favourite would have to be to be Prisoner of Azkaban (LUMOS MAXIMA! but I do have a special place in my heart for the Deathly Hallows Part 1 because it’s a little trill and my friend next to me just whispered “oh my god” because we were just entering our 20s when it came out so it felt like we were losing our childhood and it was such a weird/great moment)
Not a movie but Lord of the Rings (after the first one, when I saw the other two in the theatre, without a fail, the audience would clap at seeing the title cards)
Tumblr media
The O.C.
Tumblr media
This is really more about nostalgia than anything else but I remember when I got a TV in my room AND my mom got me The OC season 1 DVD boxset for Christmas and I just spent my weekends watching it and rewatching it SO often that sometimes my mom will randomly hum the song now and go “Californiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, remember when I couldn’t get you out of your room at ALL over the Holiday break?” so I just love it now.
Grey’s Anatomy (seasons 1-2 when they still had an opening song)
Tumblr media
I just thought it was the right kind of opening song, there was something slightly off-kilter and weird about it that I really enjoyed and that seemed to fit the kind of disorienting nature of the interns.
Third Watch
youtube
NO ONE seems to remember Third Watch but this was one of those adult shows I watched as a kid and couldn’t tell anyone at school that I was allowed to watch. The theme song got me SO AMPED and it’s SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO 90s, I fucking LOVE it.
One on One (MAN, I need to find a way to rewatch this show).
Tumblr media
Martin (OF. COURSE.)
Tumblr media
I would go around as a kid just being like “Martiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin)
House
Tumblr media
I always found it unnecessarily dramatic? It was awesome.
CSI MIAMI!
Tumblr media
IT WAS SO FUCKING CORNY. IT’S AMAZING.
Rugrats
Tumblr media
Look. That song slaps. To the point that Blackstreet and Mya made a song to it for the movie.
Entourage
Tumblr media
Again, this is more oddly sentimental? Entourage was a show with so many fucking problems but I find it comforting to watch and whenever I do rewatch it and the opening plays, I kinda feel like I’m being reunited with like ... not friends ... but acquaintances?
Dawson’s Creek (ORIGINAL I DON’T WANNA WAIT DAWSON’S CREEK)
Tumblr media
That shit is ICONIC. I remember when my cousin would start watching it and I would run to the TV.
The Sopranos (OF COURSE)
Tumblr media
I’m going to go Canadian for a sec.
Student Bodies (this. shit. was. my. JAM.).
Tumblr media
I still know all the words.
Breaker High (will never be able to take Ryan Gosling seriously, although this is Canadian-American, so,).
Tumblr media
I wanted to go to this high school SO. BADLY.
Law and Order SVU (it has to be on here)
Tumblr media
My Country: The New Age (I have the song!)
Tumblr media
This is a fucking epic opening.
Sky Castle (I have the song)
Tumblr media
It’s also a great, creepy opening.
Misfits! (Gotta love it)
Tumblr media
Special shout out to Roswell for being 90s angsty OH MY GOD
Tumblr media
AND CHARMED (I am the suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun, I am the aiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiir)
Tumblr media
Also Saved by the Bell, for some reason TBS would ALWAYS play reruns in the morning so at my aunt’s house, I would get ready to Saved By the Bell.
Tumblr media
Oh my God, I almost forgot early season Smallville. This is really more about nostalgia (somebody saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaave meeeeeeeeeee)
Tumblr media
There are more, lol.
I forgot Game of Thrones.
Tumblr media
But to be honest, that’s season 8′s fault.

Demi Lovato
This sassy, down-to-earth songstress shows a softer side with a simple garter stitch scarf as she travels from one gig to another. Knitting is, after all, the perfect way to unwind after a high-energy night.

Ryan Gosling
Hearthrob Ryan Gosling has been the subject of many a ‘Hey Girl’ knitting meme, but he actually does knit. He learned on the set of the quirky indie film, Lars and the Real Girl, where he also sports adorable sweaters (like the one shown above).

Krysten Ritter
We love Krysten for her unapologetic roles in shows like Jessica Jones and Breaking Bad, but now we have a new reason to love this actress: her devotion to knitting. Krysten often shares knitting projects on her Instagram and has been seen knitting on the Tonight Show. She’s not just into garter stitch, either--the actress was interviewed for Interweave, Mollie Makes, and Vogue Knitting this year about her projects, including her design work for We Are Knitters.

Julia Roberts
It’s no secret that Julia Roberts knits--or that she knits so much that even co-stars like Tom Hanks, when given the opportunity, learned too. As one of our favorite knitting celebrities, it’s extra special to see Julia wearing a Women’s March hat that she probably made herself!

Dakota Fanning
Dakota has been knitting since a young age, and has a habit of gifting her creations to co-stars, like Tom Cruise on the War of the Worlds set, and Ewan McGregor in her more recent film, American Pastoral. It looks like knitters of all stripes can’t help but be generous with their talents. She sounds like the perfect candidate for a knitting subscription, just saying....!

Cara Delevigne
Supermodel and actress Cara Delevigne has been spotted knitting before runway shows as a way to unwind and pass the time. It wouldn’t be a stretch for her to start a new fashion trend if she begins wearing more of her own knitted accessories.

Vanna White
You’ll probably already know that Vanna knits and crochets, due to her popular yarn line with Lion Brand, but here’s a photo of her on-set at Wheel of Fortune, hooking a blanket!

Deborah Norville
Another celebrity with a big-box line? Deborah Norville from Inside Edition has a collaboration with Premier Yarns that features several knitting books and a much-loved, pill-free acrylic.

Audrey Hepburn
Iconic and timeless, this beautiful star was seen knitting between shots on many of her films, but also during the movie Breakfast at TIffany’s. We wonder what she was up to on the set of The Unforgiven, where this shot was taken behind the scenes.

Sarah Jessica Parker
This "Sex and the City" star has been repeatedly spotted knitting on and off set. In a Good Housekeeping article, Sarah was asked how she relaxes. Her reply was: "I read, watch TV, or knit. But I try to knit and watch TV at the same time, which means I end up with many dropped stitches". Read more here.

Kristen Davis
SJP's Sex and the City costar knits too! In Lifetime magazine Kristin talked about her passion of knitting for others and with her knitting club. A recent Huffington Post article here cites Kristen as having taught Blake Lively how to knit - way to spread the love, Kristen!

Marilyn Monroe
Although the pictures are a bit grainy and small, there are some shots of Marilyn knitting on the set of 1960′s Let’s Make Love, a film in which she also wears this fantastic Cowichan-inspired cardigan. You can find some similar patterns here.

Christina Hendricks
The confident beauty shared her love of knitting in an article for CNN--like many of us, she finds the practice of this craft soothing.

David Arquette
His grandmother taught him to knit. How sweet! David loves knitting so much that he appeared on the cover of Celebrity Scarves 2 to support breast cancer research. Speaking of, the Celebrity Scarves books by Abra Edelman are full of wonderful celebrity knitters and features an introduction by another celebrity knitter...

Amanda Seyfried
The Mean Girls and Mamma Mia star has said that she considers knitting her therapy, and is often seen knitting in public as well as on set. She’s moved far beyond your typical garter stitch and often shares sweaters, including one designed by Steven West, on her social media.
Tumblr media

Daisy Ridley
The Star Wars star is an avid knitter. We hope that during those social media breaks, she’s getting lots of knitting time in!
There are countless more that we’ll have to explore in another post: knitters like Ingrid Bergman, the Notorious RBG (Ruth Bader Ginsburg), Amy Adams, Blake Lively, Russel Crowe, Harry Styles, Lorde, Kate Moss, Karen Allen, Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury, Kurt Cobain, Uma Thurman, Kate Hudson, and many more have been rumored to pick up hooks, needles, and yarn! We can’t help but wonder how many of these knitters might be secret Ravelry readers and even Knitcrate subscribers. If you’re thinking of taking up knitting or crochet yourself, a subscription is a great place to start.

A FILM OF ONE’S OWN
by Daniel Penny
If cinema has taught me anything about policing, it is that the key to being a good detective lies in having the proper outerwear. Nowhere is this more true than in the dystopian future imagined in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and sequel Blade Runner 2049, in which detectives skulk through a dark and grimy Los Angeles searching for rogue humanoid replicants to forcibly “retire.”
The original film (based on Phillip K. Dick’s Do Android’s Dream of Electric Sheep) follows Rick Deckherd (played by Harrison Ford), an LAPD cop on the hunt for six super-strong replicants who have returned from space colonies to earth as stowaways. The movie follows a pulp, film noir format, with Deckherd following clues and twisting arms in various futuristic dives around the city. What was once a sunny, albeit smoggy environment has turned downright poisonous, which is why so many people are leaving earth for space colonies. (The replicants are slaves used to build these colonies.) Instead of sunshine, Deckherd is doused in acrid rain, so he wears a long brown coat with a kind of elastic collar throughout the film. And unlike the action movies popular when Blade Runner was released, Deckherd isn’t very heroic, and he gets his ass kicked by the replicants a lot. The coat too, takes a beating, splashed with oil, showered in glass from an exploding window, and is of course, soaked in a constant flood of gray rain.
Blade Runner 2049, like any sequel must, takes the DNA of its progenitor and amplifies it to outrageous proportions. For this reason, the film’s protagonist, K (played by Ryan Gosling), wears an even more iconic long coat, to let everybody know here’s inherited Deckherd’s role. This coat is even more utilitarian, with a gigantic, faux-fur collar that K pulls over his face to protect himself from fumes of a city that have grown even more toxic in the intervening 30 years. Gosling’s character wears it in virtually every scene, and like it’s predecessor, this coat takes a lot of abuse. K is beaten, shot, stabbed, ground into the dirt, and nearly drowned in a putrid sea, all while wearing his coat.
In some ways, the coat in Blade Runner 2049 might even be considered a supporting character, as Gosling says and emotes so little throughout the film that we’re left to judge the state of his mind by his increasingly haggard appearance. Through it all, his coat hangs in there, persisting loyally—filthy and stiff with various dried fluids, but always, present. As Christmas approaches, consider adding an Oscar-worthy coat to your wishlist. You may not need to protect yourself from radioactive dust or the fists of homicidal cyborgs, but when you’re facing the prospect of “wintery mix,” you can still pop that collar and pretend you’re in a film of your own.
