The Russian high-fashion industry has an uncertain future behind its glossy front.
As a result of Western designer brands' exodus from Russia in response to Moscow's decision to send soldiers into Ukraine, domestic rivals now command more attention.
But professionals from the business warned that grasping that opportunity would not be simple at the yearly Moscow Fashion Week, which features the creations of Russian designers.
"We need to develop the production of fabrics because our fabrics and accessories are all imported," said Yulia Lavrichenko, a fashion stylist who took part in last week’s event. "Unfortunately, our designers are suffering from this for the time being."
Even Russian couturiers primarily rely on Italy for the high-end materials used to dress their wealthy clients.
Furthermore, although China, Bangladesh, Belarus, and Turkey continue to supply Russia with materials and clothing for mass use, Italy is supporting European Union restrictions that make trading in luxury goods exceedingly challenging.
Olga Sinitsyna, whose brand SCORA creates hats and accessories, said her company was just recovering from the pandemic's shock when Russia's military operation started, which caused the rouble to crash and import prices to soar.
Since then, the rouble has recovered, "but logistics are 10 times more expensive," she added, adding that she was forced to raise her rates.
"You have to understand that everything you see here is not made from Russian raw materials," she said. "This, of course, affects the cost ... But here the choice is either you do it - or you cry and do nothing. I choose to do it."
The increasing limitations will force designers to find innovative solutions, and innovators to focus some of their energy on promoting a domestic fashion manufacturing base, according to designer Albina Akkulova, known for creating dresses that are inspired by fairy tales and are embroidered with beads and gold thread.
"For Russia as a whole, it's new possibilities," she said, backstage after her brand's runway show. "We'll create something of our own, develop our own fashion industry."

I'm not from Moscow, and I don't like Moscow at all. But in last August I was at the concert, that took place on a ship, that sailed down along the Moscow river. And for this concert I had go to Moscow for several days.
I don't know why, but these days for me have became that place in my memory, that moment, to which I want to return, which I still cant let go of.
