ya know i usually use runningred as just a cute lil ship to get sandstorm into the picture but actually,it kinda makes a lot of sense for her characterization. the dissonance between her calm and noble father, redtail (who PROBABLY became a warrior early just checking out his vibes) and the wild, energetic runningwind who's apparently too impatient to mentor an apprentice. they're also around the same age at death, red at 54 moons, running at 56 moons.
FOR REALLL It really contributes to the character of BOTH their kids
Runningwind and Redtail loved each other, and their family, but had communication problems. They were bad at just sharing their feelings and letting their kids know how much they were adored
Holding up Redtail's legacy is all that Sandstorm and Longtail have left of him. They want to be respected warriors!
And Runningwind can probably see Tigerclaw and Darkstripe aren't GREAT influences but... with Redtail gone, what can he even say? He's impatient and RUNS from his own problems
Sandstorm
Through TPB she's loyal and reliable, but also hot-and-cold. She has issues with compassion and trust, snapping at Fireheart when he loses Cloudpaw and immediately distrusting Ravenpaw
It fits SO PERFECTLY with her not learning how to approach her own emotions. At first Sandpaw was lashing out at Firepaw unfairly for the loss of her dad and how he embarrassed her brother, but over time, came to respect him as a warrior.
She's responsible and serious like Redtail. Impatient and reliable like Runningwind.
Longtail
He also wants to uphold the honor of Redtail, and the shame of being nicked by a kittypet is unbearable. Runningwind should have been there for him, but he wasn't, and Tigerclaw and his clique were.
The DRAMA when he finds out that Tigerclaw killed his dad?? And then he kills his OTHER dad AND his apprentice??? I'm DEAD
And his TURNAROUND just works so well, because he bit into the poison apple of clan culture to try to be honorable. Like his DAD. When he realized that Tigerclaw's path lead away from what Redtail would have wanted, that's Longtail's out.
His reason to self-reflect. In my rewrite he's becoming deputy for a while, btw.
I also just like how Sandstorm and Longtail's suffixes match their parents, -Wind and another -Tail

“Soul…mate?” She wrinkled her nose, “but I don’t wanna soulmate! I like how things are.”
Papa cooed, pushing himself to sit crisscross before pulling her up into his lap. “It’s not like that, sweetie. It’s… your soulmate probably isn’t someone you’ll meet until you’re a lot older. They’re sort of like your promised… friend."
A Promised Friend, that’s how her Papa had described soulmates.
But how was she meant to be friends with someone so different from her?
(Or: In a world where most have a soulmate who they can communicate with by drawing on their skin, Sandy and Rusty have been paired together. This would be fine if they had absolutely anything in common).

More on Birchstreak the unnamed queen — I’ve decided she’s Redtail and Runningwind’s surrogate! Redtail is intersex and transmasc, runningwind is cis male. The litter are from both toms since cats can carry multiple sire’s offspring in one pregnancy, and redtail is unable to carry kits (intersex fertility seems to vary heavily based on the individual, let me know if I get any of this wrong btw I wanna be as accurate as possible). I always liked the idea of either redtail or runningwind having kits, but tbh the options never meshed well for me based on book interactions or just. Idk it didn’t feel as right to me personally, like, I wasn’t a big fan of sandstorm being his daughter tbh (mainly because she shows no overt grief at his death and I know that can be altered, but personally it felt meh that both him and brindleface aren’t grieved by her in books) so this is a fun way for me to have my cake and eat it too. These kits will be the unnamed kits from the first book who do not resemble frostfurs litter (there’s at least 4) and I haven’t figured out names for them yet.

I will edit them in IBSpaint I swear to god. I just don’t have time I don’t want to keep you guys waiting!
Anyways. I had fun drawing these ones. Very nice lol.
BrokenNewt-
Newtspeck fell in love with Brokentail when he became a devoted warrior. Loving him for some odd reason (I can’t think of any reasons why a she-cat would love hat ugly mother-f’er)
Brokentail returned those interests and soon became mates.
When Brokenstar became leader, they had their first litter. Newtspeck hated Brokenstar after 3 moons of him leading. At this time she was expecting and didn’t want him to put the kits in danger so acted like she still loved him.
After the kits were born and Brokenstar was chased out Newtspeck was devastated as everyone looked at her kits with pure hatred, which made her run away. Leaving her kits without a mother. (She couldn’t bring herself to taking them with her as she joined Windclan.)
Shadowclan ended up giving the kits to Thunderclan after Sapplingkit died (Newtspeck didn’t name her kits before she left because she didn’t know if they deserved it. She was confused at the time with so many emotions)
Larchthistle- Larchthistle was born weak along with her siblings. She grew up stronger when Yellowfang took her and Cinder in. She named them and raised them. Larchthistle ended up looking like Brokenstar with a bent tail though acted nothing like him. Being fair and genuine. She loved taking care of the elders and often sat in the elders den listening to every story they had to the point she knew every single one to the point she could re-sight them without a problem. She ended up with amber eyes like her father too and often hated it. As Yellowfang told them everything about their father when they were old enough to understand.
Sapplingkit- Named after a Sappling by Raggedstar as he felt the small she-kit was never given a chance and remained a Sappling like a seed that barely sprouted. She ended up being a diluted grayish brown tabby with yellow eyes. She ended up dying as a kit. Warrior name would have been Sapplingheart or if Yellowfang named her - Would have named her Marigoldkit after her dead sister, Marigoldeyes.
Cinderface- Named after Cinderpaw (who died to the monster) he often knew how much he looked like Brokenstar with his broad-smushed face and big, fluffy body. Though it didn’t stop him from being a great warrior. He ended up being kind, wise, and often was the cat to go to when you had a problem. He became mates with a loner who joins and had kits. (Hehehe cause I can) And he loved them to death. He later dies with his sister in the elders den around the time Bramblestar becomes corrupted by Ashfur. (They weren’t really being fed a lot and were already super old so ya)- he is a Dark gray tom with dark ginger spark like markings on his face and chest.

Runningwind and Redtail became mates around the time Runningwind became a warrior. Having their first kit, Sandkit(storm) and then their second litter!
Applepatch- Lively, swift, quick-minded and very funny. This Tom is a light brown tom with calico patches along with a darker tail. He has dark green eyes and often gets into trouble for pulling pranks. He was the first born.
Bushkit— Died when a owl spotted him outside the nursery at night and took him. He was a pure red bushy kit with pale green eyes.
Hollytail- Grayish-brown tabby-sleek tom with a red tail and green eyes. He is a fun tom to hang out with but also takes his duties seriously. He loves his siblings and is happy he had so many to be around.
Bunnyhop- a lively diluted Standish-reds tortoiseshell with half her tail missing (from a branch crushing it) she also has pale green eyes and often teases her siblings. She’s very understanding and forgiving and often ends up being the nursery guard when the clan knows that the other clan cats may attack due to one reason or another. She does have her own kits.
Lowpaw- Red-diluted tabby tom with a pure red tail and dark green eyes. He was clear-mind and often stayed on task. He was very ambitious and often got into fights with his siblings. Stating that if they wanted to serve their clan that they need to stay focused. Which Lowpaw was. He was sadly murdered by Tigerstar as an apprentice which left his siblings heart-broken and his parents.

Sorry to bother, but I was wondering if you’d given any thought as to Runningwind’s role? He’s my favorite of the background characters, and I’m starved for content about him.
Lots!
Runningwind is now one of the fathers of Sandstorm and Longtail, his mate is Redtail. He has a distinct design quirk where his stripes run horizontal, a trait that you can actually see on my designs for Longtail, Jayfeather, Lionblaze, and nearly every tabby in his bloodline... except Ivypool, who has an uncanny resemblance to Redtail.
His role is pretty small, but relevant. He's a rather avoidant person and has a hard time confronting the death of his mate, causing his kids to have to soothe themselves. He's very proud of Longtail for standing up to Tigerclaw at his banishment; just as it seems like the little family is about to heal, Running's murdered by Tigerclaw.
It's very likely that he rashly charged Tiger, for killing his husband and leading his son astray. He was a very impatient cat. His death causes Bluestar to ramp up patrols and stretch the Clan thinner than it can go, like canon.
(TPB is one of the least changed arcs; most of its tweaks are around the opening which expands on Spottedleaf's older-sister type relationship with Fire, and adding more meat to the horrors of TigerClan.)
Cute funfact: Squirrelkit was named for a term of endearment Runningwind had for Redtail. When Red was upset his tail would poof up, which Runner called "Squirreling."

no but like can we actually talk about how weird and annoying it is how they ALWAYS make mothwing muscular and big for mothpool kits. it’s like there forcing her to be a father, and not a mother.
I can imagine how annoying it is for transfem fans of the series to see the most popular transfem headcanon in the fandom being one where the character in question is always made big and muscular and is made trans for the sake of having children with another character and nothing else

As a reminder to myself: make a post about Sandstorm and her struggles that are never seen by the narrative that could’ve made her a amazing character if the writers cared enough. And how a few add ons make her story so much better.
#yknow I love raven like a lot of other ppl but he is so much less looked at yet is so big in the fandom#it’s one of the things that kinda irks me a bit#he’s there for the first book and then leaves#we seen him every now and then but he’s pretty stock in character besides his trauma and anxiety (which isn’t too stock but it’s fine)#like sandstorm is so interesting as a character and one when I relay think about I could fill out entire essays on#and she’s given both none of the authors spotlight or fandoms#she’s almost entirely the wife of firestar. and that’s about it#and I hate that bc she is so cool!!! especially if you add things like her being a RunningRed kit or former friend of ravenpaw#I just love her so much. shes both a comfort and a therapy character#bc I can imagine her mental growth that I want for myself. sorry to project it happens to my faves#sandstorm#I’m going to rb and ahve my essay on sandstorm just u ppl wait
