Dimitri chose Rose for the first time.
In this scene when Rose keeps repeating
"Fight back! Fight!"
it's how she urged him to choose duty, because that's what he always did, and that's what he did with her. And you can clearly see that he shakes his head as if to say "No this time I choose you Rose, not the duty". He think he deserves this and that Rose needs this.
It was the most beautiful and most significant scene of the episode.
In this moment Dimitri chose Rose, he put her first.🥀❤️

My toxic trait is that I’ve read all the Vampire Academy books (yes, even the spin off book series), own the 2014 movie and will at some point start watching the new tv series.
Do I gag at literally everything in it? Yes.

The complete shift in Dimitri in Episode 8 (rejecting any pursuit of Rose + Tat hookup) to Episode 10 (being ready to basically tell Rose he loved her in the tunnel) felt a bit sudden. What do you think caused that shift and when did it start to happen?
One of the things I love most about Dimitri and his relationship with Rose is the way he is always clear about his feelings. In so many shows the angst comes from (usually the male character) half of a ship caring about the other person but denying it for whatever reason. But with Dimitri, he couldn't be with Rose yet he always made it clear how much he wanted to be.
So going back to your question, I think he obviously let himself selfishly believe that he might have a future with Rose. Then after Episode 7 he quickly squashed that hope because of his fear and the selfless concern he had about Rose.
And while I understand that he was meant to hit that rock bottom — I would have loved more time in that part of his story. There was so much happening plot-wise that we didn't get to explore. It could have been a more drawn-out arc (with or without that hookup tbh).
But I would say a combination of him thinking about how his life would change when he took the blame in Episode 9 + maybe the knowledge that Rose was about to leave to live the life she was meant to have with him with Mason shook Dimitri up?
There's nothing like a heightened life or death situation to make someone like Dimitri want to put all his cards on the table. Maybe he really thought he would never see Rose again and now that he had the chance he wanted to make sure she knew how much space she took up in his heart.
Because as open as those two were about their feelings — I think they still individually had all this doubt. Rose knew Dimitri cared about her but his inability to choose his own wants over his belief system must have made her question their connection. The same with Dimitri thinking that he wasn't enough for Rose because he was so concerned about the only life he knew before her.
