I just finished reading The Idea of You and I have some thoughts. So, I read it because I watched the trailer and I'm a fan of Nicholas Galitzine and Anne Hathaway. I didn't know anything about it before.
I liked the book, I read it within 24 hours. I think it's fun and emotional. But there are some aspects that didn't make sense/ that felt rushed and I wonder how they'll deal with them in the movie. For instance, I think it's pretty naive that Solene goes to public places with Hayes and no one cares. They don't really try to keep it a secret that hard, the whole band knows, the staff, her friends etc.
Also of Isabelle is such a hard core fan, she probably told Solene way more information about Hayes than she claims to know. There are some situations where it just seems weird that Solene wouldn't know these things about Hayes after idk how many months. Also Hayes remembers everything about her, she should pay more attention.
However, for Hayes not to know that "just ignore it" is not the same for Solene (or women in the entertainment industry in general) as for him seems pretty insensitive. Yes, he tries to quit the band for her. But he doesn't really get what this level of attention does to her and they make a lot of things up as they go. But the other band members had girlfriends etc., there should be a protocol. Solene should have gotten a bodyguard and cameras soon as they started officially dating.
So about the movie; first of all, amazing cast, I'm super exited! I've seen some posts that think Anne doesn't look 40 and Nicholas doesn't look 20 and I agree. From the trailer, the age difference doesn't seem that noticeable. But also in the book, something you feel like Hayes acts way older than 20 and Solene way younger than 40 so I think it depends on the acting and it could work.
Please feel free to comment or message me.

WATTPAD. DEL FANFICTION AL BEST-SELLER
Megan Montiel - 22/03/24
Tumblr media

"I was approached directly by an editor at Random House (now Penguin Random House) through a private message on Wattpad" dijo la autora (trad.

Book Review: The Idea of You by Robinne Lee
Tumblr media
I am so torn about this one! On the one hand, I appreciated how this book foisted cultural preconceptions about age gap romances on me and forced me to confront what society thinks about them and why - as in, why it is "okay" for an older man to be with a much younger woman, but "gross" for an older woman to be with a much younger man. (Hint: It's called double standards, which is why in this house we say FUCK THE PATRIARCHY.). BUT, that said, I still found myself struggling to suspend belief enough to buy into Hayes and Solene's love affair.
Perhaps it's because I, in my mid-thirties, cannot imagine myself dating, let alone viewing, a twenty-year-old man as anything but a young boy with the emotional maturity/intelligence of a thumbtack (which is probably part of the problem here...but I'm swear I'm tryin' to open my mind! 😅), but also because the experience gap between them was so large - with her being a gallery owner and mum to a middle schooler, and with him being a jet-setting, model-faced, boy band celebrity with few real adult responsibilities - that I couldn't quite wrap my head around how a relationship between them would work. In any capacity. I mean, they had nothing in common whatsoever? They shared little ground besides that of mutual attraction. And later, an acquired (for Hayes) interest in art. Moreover, most of their relationship existed inside of a bubble with them hidden away in hotel suites or traveling on tour. And while that would have been fine if all that was being sold to me was an extended fling or a brief lust-filled affair, I couldn't believe there was enough substance for them to blossom a deep and abiding love for one another. I just couldn't. Much as I tried.
I also couldn't help but scrunch up my nose at how Solene handled the situation with her daughter, Isabelle, sometimes. She was not good at talking to her about what was happening or how Hayes being in the picture was affecting their lives, especially given the whole camera-hounding, tween-bullying insanity later on.
Like, get your child some therapy, Solene! She needs it, okay? You can't pretend your choice of lover doesn't affect your child or won't cause her feelings, especially not after she's already been through her parent's divorce. That's insane! So be a mom and help her find a healthy way to process her emotions. (Am I judging her a little? Yeah. You're damn right, I am.)
Look, I know Solene's decision to date Hayes is supposed to be seen as bold and empowering, with her putting her own wants and needs as a person first, which I applaud, I really do, but she also had me thinking her naive and inconsiderate in many ways, too. She was a mixed bag character because of that. Not good, not bad, but interesting, for sure!

Allright who is or has read this? Ugh I want to love it. I am a female pushing 40 you would think this would be my jam. Unfortunately its completely unrelatable in that I am not a super successful and super rich hot girl. I feel like someone should rewrite this with a heroine more relatable. Those of us who have to budget and shop at Walmart! I'm halfway through since I have 0 free time but a page here and there! Thoughts?

Quote
'It's not like we could leave. You're like... Rapunzel up here. Locked away in your castle.. with all your hair... Hayes Campbell, the new-millennium Rapunzel.'  'Rapunzel of the Four Seasons,' he said. We laughed.  For a moment, he held my gaze and I felt that distinct rush. The realization that this attraction had ceased to be just physical. That somewhere I had crossed over. That I liked him.  'When I was ten, I came here for the first time with my parents. We stayed in a hotel in Times Square and we visited the Statue of Liberty and did all these touristy things. We went to see Ground Zero and they were just starting to build again.'  I realized that this, what he was talking about, was only ten years ago. That I was living in Los Angeles by then, still somewhat happily married, and with a two-year-old. Our references were so far off. When the towers came down, Hayes would have been in the equivalent of the third grade. 'There was this one afternoon,' he continued, 'that we spent up in Central Park. Just walking around. And there was so much going on. These huge Latin families picnicking and playing music. People roller-skating. Blokes playing football.. soccer. It was so alive and full of energy and happy. And I remember feeling it was wicked that for one afternoon I was part of that. I was talking to Rory this morning, and I was telling him how brilliant it was to lose a day walking in Central Park because he's never been. He'd never been here before the group. But then I realized, we can't do that. I can't do that anymore. He may never have the opportunity to do that. Which is weird, yeah? It's a trade-off...' He was quiet for a moment, looking out toward the greenery. His stunning profile. His beautiful bones.  He turned in my direction suddenly, pressing his back up against the railing. 'I'm rambling, aren't I? Sorry. I just get going sometimes and ---'  Hayes's lips were still moving when I kissed them. This warm, wide, inviting pool that beckoned. I could not resist the bait. His youth, his beauty. And everything, everything about the moment, was wonderful.  'Oh-kay,' he said when he finally allowed me to pull away. 'I didn't see that coming.'  'Sorry. I just.. your mouth.'  'Really?' He smiled 'It wasn't the hair?' I began to laugh. His large hands circled my waist, drawing me into him. 'It wasn't my waxing nostalgic about my childhood holidays? Because this one time we were in Majorca..'  'Shut up, Hayes.'  'You know this means I win, right? Because I held out longer.'  'I didn't know it was a competition.'  He shrugged. 'I didn't know it wasn't.'  'That's because you're twenty.'  'Yes, well... you seem to like that.' He stopped talking and leaned in to kiss me again.
