It is March 1st, 2024, and The Queen’s Thief fanworks challenge Weird the Tag is now live! The collection is open and will remain so until April 1st. There will be a one-week anonymous period to try to spot your friends, and authors will be revealed April 8th.
-
Weird the Tag is a writing and art challenge (not an exchange), with a 100 word minimum for fics, designed to motivate people to expand their creative horizons through Queen's Thief content. This includes fanfiction, fanart of all mediums, video and audio art, filk, podfics, and fan crafts.
What do I mean when I say "weird?" I mean that I started this event because I was inspired by MWT's encouragement to "make bad art," and I want to motivate the fandom to share things that are imperfect or unserious. Create for the joy of it, whether or not you think it's good, canon-compliant, something other people will get, or using techniques you're confident in. Try new things, get a rise out of your friends, share things you're psyching yourself out of posting or are afraid nobody else will be interested in, and embrace tropey fun. Experiment!
-
Ao3 collection, with full information: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/WTT_QT/profile
This blog, with handy links and Moderator contact: https://weirdthetag.tumblr.com/
This year's optional ideas document, if you want to play and need inspiration, with more than 220 suggestions from the fandom: It's a long ugly link to a published Google doc.

Happy creating, one and all! The mole god is cheering for you.

Scorpio Full Moon April 2024 Illuminating Shadows
Scorpio, the Sign of Transformation Scorpio is the sign of death and rebirth, and although the death process can be difficult, painful, and challenging, the rebirth is always beautiful. Just like the phoenix rises from the ashes, this Scorpio Full Moon gives us the opportunity to do our own rising.
The Scorpio Full Moon is also referred to as the Buddha Moon. In the Himalayas, they celebrate the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha under the Scorpio Full Moon. The Scorpio Full Moon is also said to thin the veil between dimensions, allowing our own process of enlightenment to expand. --by Tanaaz,Forever Conscious Scorpio Moon Shadowself Image art --Mahaboka

2023 YEAR IN REVIEW!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My artstyle changed a lot this year, especially after my shift from ibis paint to procreate after getting my iPad (drawing on an iPad is the BEST btw 100% recommend I love it way more than a phone and it didn’t die after a month like my old wacom 💀💀). I’m relatively happy with where my art is atm and I hope to continue to improve in 2024!
Explanation of all the silly art down below! (Mostly so I can tell y’all who the fanart is for but also cause I like rambling)
January: A drawing of my Rise Leo human design I did to test out a pixel brush I found for Ibis Paint. He’s very fun to draw hehe I need to draw him more-
February: I wanted to learn how to draw the future designs of Leo and Mikey along with CJ so I planned to draw them all together! I struggled with Leo though so I just got rid of him. Sorry Peepaw 😞😞💔💔💔
March: Fanart for @beannary ‘s TLP au! I love it so much so I had to draw smth for it hehe 😈😈💥💥💥 which reminds me I need to draw more at some point- might redraw it at some point cause I’m not super happy with how it turned out but I do like the idea a lot
April: The month I created Reticent! April’s Fools was the first episode I came up with so I drew a chapter poster! It ended up being very different to the chapter cover I drew a couple months later but it’s still cool :D Leo is being weirdly affectionate to Mikey though what the heck that isn’t like him smh. Although I guess it was meant to be purposefully exaggerated sooooo 🥰
May: Reticent Casey!!! I don’t have much to say it’s just Reticent Casey HDKSGXKSHD this wasnt a very good art month
June: Krangified Donnie is literally my favourite concept ever thats it that’s all I have to say dbskdbwkh I adore Krangified Donnie and if the Rise brainrot takes over the Reticent brainrot for a while then I will probably be drawing Krangified Donnie during that time sorry not sorry
July: Reticent Chapter 3’s cover yippee!!! Still my favourite Reticent cover although Chapter 8’s is a close second (I can’t wait to post it once it’s been betaread yippee!!!). The scribble over Leo’s eyes is literally just because I was struggling to draw his eyes and i was getting annoyed dbskdbskdb it’s actually a very common issue with him (common Ret!Leo L). Also Mikey being reflected in the mirror is a reference to Mirror Man by Jack Stauber which I’ve basically considered his theme song since @aaronymous999 introduced it to me ebwjcbkwhd thank you Mr. Aaronymous! Also somebody said he was in the barbie box and I still need to draw that to this day because Mikey would’ve killed to go see Barbie.
August: RET DONNIE WOOOOO he’s being bullied again!!! I drew that piece for a colour palette challenge request and realised I got the prompt wrong so I just made it into its own thing 💥💥💥 it’s usually a flickering light gif but I chose to just use the version with the light on for this post. The photos in the background were really fun to draw hehe either April’s or Mikey’s is my favourite.
September: MY 500 FOLLOWER DTIYS YIPPEE (/my 150 follower DTIYS for tumblr). This one took me. Forever to draw and I love it to pieces hehe it was really fun to design Mikey’s room and figure out outfits for the sillies and idk the concept of a sleepover just seemed really fun to me dbskbdkdb- and all the entries I got were so so awesome I loved them all to pieces!!! I still look at them all the time hehe
October: FANART OF @endlesslogo ‘S HUMAN RISE LEO DESIGN WOOOOOO!!! This was the piece I started rendering on hehe it was so much fun to draw!!!! Although I did have a fight with rendering the hair for over an hour svsjegksbdk HOW DO PEOPLE DO IT FR!!!
November: Me and my friends were working on a crossover between our TMNT iterations so I drew all of our Karai’s together!!! Confluence Karai is on the left, created by Salem and Marine, New Stars Karai is in the middle created by Starla, and Reticent Karai is on the right created by me! All our Karais have such cool designs AHHHHH literally dead over them constantly/pos
December: Most of December I spent drawing Christmas presents so this was my present for Salem!!! Confluence!Jonatello my beloved….

Major Study: Pre-Production
Solar-Scrap: Key Game Mechanics
Thinking more about the premise and mechanics of the game, I began thinking about what a game that celebrates the power of the sun could look like. I looked to games like The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand, which requires the use of physical sunlight, via a sensor built into the game cartridge, to power your defense against the undead. The concept for my game about the sun, I also thought about having it run in real-time with day cycles and seasons that matched the earth's. Examples of that are also Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand, and the Animal Crossing franchise.
Tumblr media
Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand cover art, Konami, 2003.
Game Mechanics
To make the most of a real-time mechanic, I had a look at locations on Earth that may have been impacted by global warming and other such phenomena in the future. I started to explore the possibility of basing the game in Greenland. This poses some interesting hurdles which I believe can make the game really unique and fun to engage with:
Creative freedom to design what lies beneath exposed areas revealed by the receding ice shelf, Greenland has a high altitude so won't be greatly affected by rising ocean levels.
Most of Greenland is within the arctic circle, the southernmost part would still have more equal day/night cycles, but the northern wildlands will have the characteristic extreme day/night cycles that exist within the arctic circle. This would allow for seasonal challenges and collectibles that unique to the season.
Tumblr media
Map of the Arctic with the Arctic Circle in blue, CIA World Fact Book, 2009 .
In the winter lunar months, visual interest will be met with stunning arrays of the aurora borealis which will be part of a key narrative in the game.
Solar power will be extended to night cycles by harnessing the intense radiation that causes the aurora.
Tumblr media
A GIF showing NASA's CubeSat within an artist’s rendition of the constantly moving magnetic fields around Earth, NASA, 2016.
This allows me to design a unique solar cell that can reverse between the different harnessing modes. The transition between modes could perhaps be similar to the old flip dot displays used in signage, along with the very ASMR sound of tiny disks synchronously flipping, similar in sound to a rain-maker musical instrument.

Exploring the Cosmic Dance: Celestial Events and the Human Experience in April 2024
Tumblr media
As the curtain rises on April, the cosmos orchestrates a symphony of celestial events, each with a unique story to tell. At the heart of this cosmic ballet is the mesmerizing alignment of Venus and Neptune on April 3rd, a spectacle in the night sky that whispers tales of love, beauty, and the ethereal. This celestial duo, dancing in the vast expanse, isn't just a marvel of the skies but a metaphor for the human quest for harmony and transcendence. In the realm of the humanities, this pursuit finds its reflection in the arts and literature, where the brushstrokes of a painting or the verses of a poem echo our innate longing for connection and understanding. The alignment of these celestial bodies can serve as a muse for introspection, prompting us to ponder how the themes of love, beauty, and spirituality weave through the tapestry of our lives and cultures. It's a moment to reflect on how these universal values shape our identity, guiding the principles and ideals we hold dear. As we navigate through April, the cosmos unveils yet another chapter with the Moon's embrace of Mars and the mysterious occultation of Saturn on April 6th. This celestial event could be likened to a historical and philosophical odyssey, exploring the enduring human themes of conflict, resilience, and transformation. These themes, central to the human saga, shape our collective and personal narratives, painting our identities with the brush of courage, adversity, and growth. Through the humanities, we find a lens to view these celestial phenomena not as distant occurrences but as reflections of our own stories and struggles, offering insights into our responses to life's challenges. The narrative crescends with the total solar eclipse and new moon on April 8th, casting a shadow that beckons us to the themes of renewal and rebirth. This powerful symbol, revered across various religious and philosophical traditions, invites us to a period of introspection. It's an opportunity to revisit our paths and purposes, resonating with the cycles of death and rebirth celebrated in literature and mythology. Engaging with these stories allows us to draw parallels between our personal transformations and the cosmic cycles, enriching our understanding of self-identity within the grand scheme of change. Our exploration of celestial events and their resonance with the human experience wouldn't be complete without acknowledging the rich tapestry of interpretations from diverse cultures and disciplines within the humanities. These perspectives offer a kaleidoscope of insights into how societies across ages have woven astronomical phenomena into the fabric of their worldviews and identities. By delving into these interpretations, we uncover the multifaceted nature of human identity, sculpted by an array of sociocultural influences and experiences. Crafting a narrative that intertwines the celestial, the cultural, and the personal requires a thoughtful approach, aimed at engaging those intrigued by the confluence of astronomical events and human introspection. By drawing on insights from various humanities disciplines, we weave a story that not only enhances our appreciation for the celestial wonders of April 2024 but also invites us to ponder the intricate connections between the cosmos, culture, and the construction of our identities. As we gaze up at the night sky this April, let the celestial phenomena be not just sights for our telescopes but windows into our souls. Through the lens of the humanities, we can embark on a journey that transcends the boundaries of space and time, inviting us to reflect on the eternal dance between the cosmos and the core of our being. In this cosmic interplay, we find not just answers but questions that propel us forward in our quest for understanding, connection, and identity. So, as the celestial bodies chart their course across the April sky, let's embrace the opportunity to chart our own, guided by the timeless wisdom of the humanities and the endless wonder of the stars above. OF FLAMES AND SHADOWS GONE ASTRAY at Bermudez Projects, Los Angeles
Tumblr media
OF FLAMES AND SHADOWS GONE ASTRAY
March 9 – April 6, 2024 1225 Cypress Avenue, Los Angeles
_________
Bermudez Projects presents as its first show of 2024, Of Flames and Shadows Gone Astray, a group show serving as a multifaceted, cathartic confessional of love, loss, and perseverance.
In what is perhaps the most personal exhibition of the gallerist’s career, Julian Bermudez departs from conventional curatorship, and instead brings together deeply-resonant artworks as a means of addressing the challenges of his own life.
“In the last four years, I have experienced tremendous loss. Loss of love, family, friends, and home. Working through this has been a years-long process, resulting in my need for curating this show in order to fully grieve and heal,” says Bermudez. “This also allows me to push and expand the ways I approach the art of storytelling through curation.”
Through a range of mixed-media work — each incorporating fire as a
material — the exhibition touches on our shared experiences of overcoming some of the darkest moments of life; reaffirming our enkindled spirit to thrive in the face of adversity. Impermanence, resilience, loss, and rebirth are explored through each artists’ work, inciting a deeper inspection and introspection of our personal and shared existence. The exhibition aims to leave viewers with a greater appreciation for triumph over tragedy; strength through sorrow; and healing after heartbreak.
Of Flames and Shadows Gone Astray features the works of contemporary artists Francesca Bifulco, Malado Francine, Bryan David Griffith, and Cody Norris.
Bifulco’s striking sculpture, Their Wings Banging and Burning (2023) is a masterful centerpiece to the exhibition. At surprisingly five-feet tall, the burned wood, metal, and found palm cortex stands as a wounded monolith rising from its strewn ring of charcoal crowned at its base.
“I look at this piece as the anatomical dissection of resilience. It’s this vertical body that tolerates the intersections of tough-flexible, external-internal, downward-upward, and below-aboveground,” says Bifulco. “As if you’re witnessing both the wound and the healing at the same time.”
Cody Norris’ painting of twin palm trees breaking through charred earth is a literal and figurative expression of rising again after defeat. Cast in somber hues of grey, violet, and brown, the artwork presents its own scars after having been purposely set on fire by Norris.
What compels Norris to make sense of loss – and what comes of it – by scorching the surfaces of his paintings, extends beyond a fascination with fire. The driving force behind his poignant, atmospheric paintings of endangered landscapes is questioning what gets lost along the way of life.
Bryan David Griffith’s mixed-media works from his Rethinking Fire series explores the issues behind catastrophic wildfires, from past land management practices to climate change. Each piece is created by burning and/or salvaging materials from fire sites. Griffith’s works of smoke accumulated in encaustic beeswax on panel, and petroleum smoke accumulated on paper gleam with a healing, ethereal glow.
Of all the artworks in this show, Malado Francine’s paintings were not initially intended to have a specific association with burning, per se. Although there are some visual elements of “fire” appearing within her painting, Throne, or within the alchemical symbolism of her Lotto Mandalas — their partially charred and missing sections speak to the loss she experienced only a month ago.
Despite the misfortune of that recent blaze in her home and studio, the artist was able to salvage some of her work. As a result, six paintings will be presented in the aftermath of that inferno as an example of the deep resilience we carry as artists and humans, in picking up after disaster, and moving forward with grace.
Of Flames and Shadows Gone Astray does not point to, or illustrate anything specific that has happened in the gallerist’s life. Instead, it uses artworks in lieu of words, like a song or poem to tackle far-encompassing subject matter.
“Each of these artworks speak to universal themes that many of us have faced, or will face, at some point in our life,” concludes Bermudez. “It is truly important that I share my own experiences – however veiled – with audiences in the hopes of turning a painful past into a hopeful future.”
