One of the nation's most influential black leaders, minister, educator, writer and former slave Richard Allen taught himself to read and write and in 1794 founded the African Church in Philadelphia. In 1816 Allen united five African American congregations of the Methodist Church, founding the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) and In July, 2016 the city and Philadelphia's @MuralArts program celebrated the bicentennial with this stunning new Willis Humphrey, aka Nomo, mural on N 38th St at the First Episcopal District Headquarters. A beloved muralist and one of the city's leading portrait artists, Philadelphia was shocked to hear of Nomo's passing two years later from a heart attack. Nomo was only 44 and the father of three teens and he leaves behind an impressive body of work reflecting a stylistic diversity matched by few. @willisnomo/

#BLACKhistoryMonth2022 - Day15: #celebrating #PastorJarenaLee (Feb.11th1783–Feb.3rd1864) born in #CapeMayNJ. She was a lay preacher in the #AMEchurch. Born into a #FreeBlackFamily, Lee noted the #IMMORALITYofSlavery. @ a TimePeriod of #segregation & #UnequalPrivilege, #RichardAllen gave her the opportunity for her voice to be heard. Going up against racial & gender issues, she found her home & ability to let her voice be heard @ the #AfricanMethodistEpiscopalChurch in 1819. She was part of the #2ndGreatAwakening. A leader in the #WesleyanHolinessMovement, PastorLEE preached the doctrine of #EntireSanctification throughout pulpits of the AME connexion. She was also the 1st #AfricanAmericanWoman to have an autobiography published in the #US. #anarrative #1794 #absalomjones #richardallen #philly #blackpeople #yellowfever1793 "A Narrative of the Proceedings of the Black People, During the Late Awful Calamity in Philadelphia in the Year 1793 and a Refutation of Some Censures, Thrown Upon Them In Some Late Publications." Long ass title. This was written during the time of a yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia. Something that Philadelphia publisher Mathew Carey accused the black community of profiteering from and plundering the houses of the sick. Trump before Trump. Absalom Jones and Richard Allen's writing not only called out Mathew Carey's libelous pamphlet but all of the whites of Philadelphia that had fled the city and abandoned the sick to die, something that Mathew Carey did himself. Note that it's over 200 years ago that two black men are using black people to refer to the general population. Let some tell it, black people did no such thing back then. "We never called ourselves black" Another L... Philly owes these two brothers for saving the city when everyone else ran. PHILLY WILL ALWAYS BE HOME. When I left Philadelphia, I thought I was leaving because I wanted something better, and the truth is. I did find something better, I (found who I was) no matter where you are or go, there will always be crime and/or something to disturb your peace. I'm also telling my Friends & Family they should leave Philly, but if they found away to succeed and happy with a peaceful mind & spirit, the this is where they belong. It took me this long to understand the Key to life is being Kind and Love one another, sometimes you have to go to find your purpose.
