SOME GOOD SHOWS THAT I LIKED IN 2023! (AND SOME THAT I DIDN'T)

I watched A LOT of stuff that did not originally air in 2023 by dint of my Old GMMTV Challenge. This list is inclusive of this recognition!

THE BEST SHOW I WATCHED THIS YEAR: HE'S COMING TO ME

I have no other words: this is my favorite Thai BL of all time. Perfect length, perfect plot, perfect celebration of Thai culture, perfect acting, the greatest coming out scene of all time, the BEST of the best BL moms. Perfection.

THE OTHER BEST SHOW I WATCHED THIS YEAR: BAD BUDDY

I don't even want to think about how many words I've written on Bad Buddy this year, but they're well deserved for this REMARKABLE show. I've got a thing for shows by Aof Noppharnach that feature Ohm Pawat, what can I say!

THE MOST INFLUENTIAL SHOW(S) I WATCHED THIS YEAR: LOVE SICK AND SOTUS

The influence of Love Sick and SOTUS can be seen in SO MANY Thai BLs, even through today. Without having watched these two shows to start my OGMMTVC project, I wouldn't have the context for what later shows like Bad Buddy and Theory of Love were commenting on by way of their content and structures. Love Sick in particular was a HELL of a lift -- but I am damn glad I watched it, and I certainly feel nostalgia for it today.

MY OTHER FAVORITE OLD SHOWS I WATCHED: UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN AND THEORY OF LOVE

BANGERS!!!

If New Siwaj ever tops Until We Meet Again, I'll fly to Bangkok and give him a gold medal. That long-ass show, 17 EPISODES, I WANTED MORE! OhmFluke's chemistry was great, the story delved SO deeply into historical homophobia and how culture and acceptance changes over time -- scrumptious. Theory of Love, man, the way this show ate up implicit compassion bias and gave it right back to us. I loved it. KHAI FOREVER!

THE BEST SHOW I WATCHED THAT ACTUALLY AIRED IN 2023: MOONLIGHT CHICKEN

Not only was Moonlight Chicken my first real live fandom experience on Tumblr, it was a hell of an amazing show, incorporating so much of what I love particularly about Thai BLs, and how many Thai BLs do not shy away from celebrating Asian cultural touchpoints. From exploring Jim's internalized homophobia by way of his rural upbringing, to juxtaposing Pattaya's spiritual symbols with growing development that upends older strains of local culture, Moonlight Chicken offered a lovely commentary on what it means to be queer in an ever-changing Thailand.

THE OTHER BEST SHOW I WATCHED THAT ACTUALLY AIRED IN 2023: WHAT DID YOU EAT YESTERDAY?/KINOU NANI TABETA? SEASON 2

BRILLIANTLY ACTED by literally the best actors in the Asian BL game: we are blessed that Nishijima Hidetoshi and Uchino Seiyou have given so much to this franchise. It's hard to write about this show because it's so perfect -- it needs no extraneous words. Plot, pacing, acting, character development, gratuitous food shots. It has it all.

THE OTHER OTHER BEST SHOW I WATCHED THAT ACTUALLY AIRED IN 2023: I CANNOT REACH YOU

Just like Bad Buddy looked at Thai BL tropes in the eye and said, "over my Nong Nao," I Cannot Reach You asked Japanese BLs about the efficacy of almost every trope we've gotten used to, and questioned them with efficiency. The biggest shocker for me? REAL COMMUNICATION, encouraged by the CIPHER, Hosaka, that allowed the two lead protagonists to confirm their love and understand each other. It was straightforward and FUCKING GOOD.

A SHOW THAT AIRED IN 2023 THAT I HAVEN'T WRITTEN ABOUT YET, THAT I NEED TO REWATCH IN CHRONOLOGY, THAT ALSO DID SOME TROPE/GENRE ASS-KICKING THAT I'M STILL THINKING ABOUT: LA PLUIE

La Pluie was FEARLESS. The show had a LOT to say about romance and soulmates not being as much of a realistic thing as content-makers... and, frankly, majority society would like us to think. La Pluie made its characters WORK for love and understanding, and had us viewers face our implicit biases about how romantic content should and could work. I watched this show out of order of the OGMMTVC watchlist to see it it was one of the best of the year, and it certainly is. I'm planning a deep rewatch for early 2024 to pen my words on it.

A SHOW THAT ALMOST TOPPED MY 2023 LIST BUT GOT DOCKED BECAUSE I ENDED UP LIKING THE NOVEL A LOT BETTER: I FEEL YOU LINGER IN THE AIR

@neuroticbookworm and @lurkingshan know that I flipped THA FUCK out over this show -- FABULOUSLY acted by Nonkul Chanon and Bright Rapheephong, FABULOUS cinematography, great story up until the end of the series. My fangirling led me to read the original novel by Violet Rain, and -- I found out that Jom was a lot more damn sassy than we got in the show! Tee Bundit's penchant for sadness won. This is not to dock the show, but the novel had more than enough material to carry the series through without repeating themes in the end. So it fell on my 2023 list, womp womp. BUT I STILL LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SHOW, DON'T GET ME WRONG.

TWO SHOWS THAT I'M SUPER GLAD I CAUGHT UP WITH WHILE THEY WERE AIRING: THE EIGHTH SENSE AND BE MY FAVORITE

Be My Favorite looked at Krist Perawat's checkered past as a BL idol and said: we are going to examine this and make an honest BL out of inspiration from it. It wasn't a perfect show, the time travel shit didn't end up adding up in the end, BUT -- excellent acting from two GMMTV VETS made up for those tangles, and I loved the contextual philosophical references throughout the series. The Eighth Sense looked at the tug-of-war that Korean BLs have with K-dramas and their tropes and said, actually? We will have these dudes full-frontal kiss, and placed that energy against commentaries on mental health, both topics that Korea hasn't quite embraced as quickly as other countries.

HONORABLE MENTIONS OF OTHER AWESOME SHOWS THAT MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE AIRED IN 2023

Make It Right, Our Dating Sim, Dark Blue Kiss, Gay OK Bangkok, Dirty Laundry, 10 Years Ticket, I Told Sunset About You, I Promised You the Moon, 3 Will Be Free, Lovely Writer (underrated?!), Our Skyy 2 x Bad Buddy x A Tale of Thousand Stars (UNDERRATED!), and Manner of Death.

And the shows that are airing that I know will stay with me well into 2024: Last Twilight and Cherry Magic Thailand.

WHAT ELSE, WHAT ELSE: THE "NO" SHOWS: THE PROMISE AND STEP BY STEP

I'm not even hyperlinking my thoughts on these shows, nor gifting them with gifs. Insert Bugs Bunny NOOOOOO gif here! We got Man Trisanu, though.

THE SHOW I WAS THE MOST OBVIOUSLY DISAPPOINTED BY: ONLY FRIENDS

Despite my passionate disappointment for this show and how it ended: in the context of the OGMMTVC, Only Friends is still an incredibly important inclusion to the list. Some amazing Tumblr bloggers offered commentary that the bias against sex that OF contained within the show was actually importantly and culturally contextual to the still-conservative state of acceptance that Thailand is currently in (here and here for more reading).

Only Friends reminded us that despite any kind of marketing that we here on Tumblr, as a majority non-Thai audience, may receive about a Thai show -- that we are still not fully plugged into the non-verbal expectations of what a show like OF could promise to do, and to be okay when it doesn't reach those heights. In light of the seemingly pro-sex marketing blasts that previewed the series before its airing, OF ultimately seemed to want to take casual sex, chew it up, and spit it out. There might be reasons why that happened that we just don't know about as outsiders to Thailand. But as an Asian-American viewer that was hoping for neutral -- and maybe even supportive -- commentary on single folks having casual sex without judgement, OF did not deliver for me.

I'm ending the year reading Dr. Thomas Baudinette's book, Boys Love Media in Thailand, the first book-length ethnographic study on the impact of BL on queerness, media, and more in Thailand and across Asia. Baudinette comes from the world of Japanese queer media studies -- as someone who came to Thai BLs this year from Japanese BLs, I appreciate his trajectory. It's clearly a necessity for me to read this book in the context of the OGMMTVC, to understand how Thai BLs have changed over time, and to understand the incredibly larger impact of heterosexual/heteronormative media and themes on Thai media as a whole, as larger and larger swaths of Thai, Asian, and international societies welcome and watch BLs with open arms.

All of this feeds into my ever-growing body of knowledge about the impact of Thai BLs, both in Thailand and across Asia, as Baudinette writes about, and how these shows have and are developed/developing over time. It's been an AMAZING YEAR of watching old and new dramas for me, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the genre grows even more in 2024.

I also made AMAZING FRIENDS on Tumblr -- y'all know who you are! What a year of growth and discovery for me: this has been a fabulous experience, and I'm looking forward to even more growth in the new year!

Just yesterday I remembered that Huntik was a thing™ and I also remember how absolutely *obsessed* my little tween/kid self was with the series. To find that there's still an active (if comically small) fandom for this obscure series that has one of THE MOST BANGER INTROS EVER MADE NO CAP is a delight.

Especially because everyone seems to be from different countries like, yeah that's the resident polish person, that's the one native english speaker etc etc

This does lowkey feel like the collective hallucinations of a bunch of strangers ngl lol

Possibly thinking about rewatching the series 🤔

But absolutely *not* the English dub because from what I'd seen my country's one is so much better.

LITA Ep. 4 Rewatch Thoughts Pt. 1

Alright friends, we've finally made it to THEE episode! Definitely grab some water for this one, you're gonna need it.

Sang along to the intro's chorus and it's a banger as usual. The recap felt shorter this time, likely so they could get to the good stuff faster. My last post was super long so no need to go over content again here, but I'm glad they included my favorite shots of Phayu holding Rain in the recap as a little treat.

This episode opens with P'Saifah doing some accounts for the shop - always a good time to see him! I'm still so happy that he knew to call Phayu as soon as he saw Rain standing there all drenched and sad. I also love that he's already accepted Rain as Phayu's person (so cute!). Phayu says here that Rain hasn't eaten since yesterday, which implies his last meal was when they went out together. I'm not sure if there's a special meaning behind it, but it is interesting that they're having dinner together twice in a row under such different contexts. Since last time, we've learned that Phayu is emotionally invested in Rain beyond simple liking (as demonstrated by how he treated and cared for Rain during a vulnerable moment).

I continue to love how they namedrop P'Pakin without showing us who he is. I, for one, would really like to put a face to the name of the all-powerful big boss. Especially bc he's clearly a PhayuRain shipper like the rest of us (evidenced by him encouraging Phayu to bring his naughty boy to the next race). Yay P'Pakin!

Phayu's face goes through a series of microexpressions here which really cemented Boss' amazing acting skills. You can tell he considers taking Rain for all of one moment before he thinks it through and remembers that he's teaching Rain to be more responsible and that he can't distract him with illegal street racing. I picked this screenshot for the pretty lighting and the subtle furrowed-brow.

Listen, I've said this 1000 times and I'll say it a 1000 times more before this set of posts is over. NOEUL IS TOO CUTE it's not fair no one should be this adorable when eating ramen

Phayu will really take ANY excuse to touch Rain's lips, won't he. I think we're at 4 lip touches so far in the series? I'm loving the bisexual lighting in the background too. Stellar shot

Ok if Phayu is Rain's codeline senior (shoutout to @atrioofinsomniacfoxes for telling me what this means), I'm sure he already has basic info like Rain's age in his permanent memory. Which means the line about him not dating underage people was either meant to reassure the audience he's got morals (which I don't think any of us ever doubted) or so he could get Rain to admit he wanted a kiss (which is mean bc then he withholds said kiss). Rain looks so smug here though when he helpfully reminds Phayu they already kissed

This is so aesthetic to me. The light from above, the hand placement, the absolutely content look on Rain's face. All perfect. I also love how Phayu gently strokes Rain's face before moving in - again, these two do small gestures extremely well that makes the couple believable. The way Phayu has his eyes closed too makes me wonder if he actually wanted to kiss Rain here, but then decides in the end to hold back in order to not be a distraction to Rain.

I can't get over how happy Rain looks to be where he is. I'm in unanimous agreement, Rain.

But then poor bby, Phayu throws cold water in his face when he tells him Rain shouldn't come to the garage anymore. The quick mood change is masterfully sold by Noeul's brow-furrows and parted lips. I also like the frantic eye contact he makes with Phayu here.

Rain's immediate reaction to Phayu telling him not to come is that he's sorry he's annoying. That's so sad, because it sounds like someone must have told him that in the past and it must have hurt quite badly for him to think that's the reason right away.

I feel like Phayu thinks similarly, and is not a fan of Rain thinking this way because he turns his head and breaks eye contact. He only looks back when he starts explaining to Rain that no, it's not because he's annoyed or doesn't want Rain around, but it's just that he wants Rain to be more responsible. I really like how Phayu phrases things in this conversation because it shows how seriously he's taking Rain and their potential relationship. Very mature on Phayu's part.

But then he immediately follows up this decree with a headpat/caress! He wants Rain to follow through on this relationship and he's relaying that through touch!! I found it very interesting that Phayu chose to drag his fingers along Rain's face instead of his hair, which is where he usually does it.

And Rain, our impulsive and rather in-love son, immediately is like Mission Accepted ft. death-grip on Phayu number 5

I couldn't get a clear shot of it, but Phayu's fingers appeared to twitch as he was pulling away from Rain, showing his reluctance to leave. Some very subtle but masterful acting from Boss (or maybe it's just that Noeul is like a Boss hand magnet so it was just nature running its course, or maybe it's both).

Finally we get the title of the episode, which is Warm Me with Your Heart. Well, I think Rain and Phayu warm up more than just their hearts in this one, just saying...

Fruity siblings alert! P' Som is actually a good brother and upperclassman for checking in on his sister's work and her friends.

Leave him alone P' Som, he's going through Phayu-withdrawals. I really like how they styled Noeul's hair in this scene! The bangs are so pretty!

Also life advice I really need to take LMAO I'm so bad at waking up on time:

Wait something super yellow-blue is happening here but I'm not sure what it is... Ok so far we've had yellow blue primarily with scenes containing just Rain and Phayu in focus, but this is the first one I'm noticing where it's so apparent but Phayu isn't present. However, the blue in this scene (mostly P' Som's overshirt) is a lighter blue whereas Phayu's blue is more navy. Maybe by the end of this post series I'll have figured out what it means??

Wait the siblings do really be fruity - P' Som is wearing rainbow tie-die so true of him

I love how Rain has dropped his crush on Ple like a bag of potatoes. Boy simply does NOT care, and Sky notices within 0.2 seconds. He's a really perceptive friend for being able to tell Rain likes Phayu before Rain is willing to admit it, and that Rain's not upset over the teacher's remarks but for a different problem. He also tells Rain to look inside his heart (a.k.a. to be true to himself). Can anyone tell me what Rain's shirt says in this scene? Because now I'm seeing that it's dark blue and the text is literally right over his heart so it could be important.

Sky immediately getting goosebumps after he was sensitive to his friend PLS Sky you don't have to pretend you're not the world's second biggest softie when it comes to Rain (beaten only by Phayu).

Ok this is cool - Rain's reflecting on his feelings while staring at his reflection in the phone screen, similar to how he was reflecting while looking at the mirror in the last episode!

Then we get a montage of Rain working hard and looking rather forlorn. He does ignore Ple once more which is an indication to us that he's moved past that crush completely. I also like that they made Ple such a nice person without making her romantically like Rain. She's cool!

Also they used my single-braincell'ed other son, Sig, and his friend to show us something else yellow-blue. I can't not include this shot bc how the heck was Sig comfortably snoozing like this? I want a series about the adventures of Sig.

After we see Rain working hard but still looking at his devoid-of-messages phone, we cut to an equally forlorn-looking Phayu. The man clearly wants to message Rain but is holding himself back. insert dreamy sigh (not even from me, Phayu literally sighs so hard right here that his coworker notices)

HE SAYS YET!! Y'all I can't get over how sure Phayu was that Rain was going to be responsible and then be his

I find it interesting that everything the other person said was a problem in his relationship is what Phayu wanted Rain to say because it would have shown responsibility.

I also like that when asked if they broke up, Phayu says it's not like that before deflecting. I always found it infuriating in dramas when people are like "I'm going to straight up reject you even though I like you for your own good". Here, Phayu didn't say they would never date, or even that he doesn't like Rain. He has made his interest abundantly clear and is just waiting for Rain to mature a bit. We love healthy communication and goal setting in this house!

Ok I'm going to say it again: I LOVE Sky as Rain's BFF. He is so perceptive and nonjudgmental and a great listener and I'm so happy we got to see his story in the latter part of the show.

Oh sweetheart, do I have news for you...

Next we get cupid-Sky saying that he never meant it when he told Rain he's annoying, and that he rather likes this side of Rain. This one statement is enough to light a whole fire under Rain and our boy is back in business.

Note to self: Can get friend-counseling services from Sky for ice cream (he looks so cute here like he knows he did a good job and also he's imagining how much trouble he just sent Phayu's way)

In the next scene, we cut directly to Rain showing up at the garage all excited to work, and Phayu completely ignores him as he walks by. It must have taken every ounce of Phayu's strength to do that bc Rain is looking mighty adorable right here. Yay we see P'Aon and the other employee! I can't recall her name so I'll call her Khun Suay from now on. Neither of them want to disappoint Rain so they have to argue over who tells Rain he can't set foot in the office. Rain is undeterred though, our stubborn son. He's an engineer y'know - he can solve his own problems.

I do love all the little details they put into this show - they just told us it was super hot outside but now we see it too with Rain's sweat.

Phayu, no longer able to tolerate seeing his boy toiling outdoors, comes to check in. Rain is here to complete his original plan of attack, which is to show up in front of Phayu every day until Phayu falls in love. But now he's also fulfilling Phayu's demands of being more responsible. Good for him.

The way they filmed Phayu here is interesting, bc he's on the far end of the screen rather than the middle. It could just be for some variance in shots, but it also does make it look like he's closer to Rain's side than he physically is.

Their convo can be summed up as follows:

Phayu: Why are you here? You should be studying.

Rain: I AM studying. Here.

Phayu: You're an eyesore (you should be inside somewhere safe and cool and away from my cracking self control).

Rain: But I wanted to see YOU.

Phayu: Ok nvm forget everything I said - how much work do you have and in what ways can I help without making it obvious I'm helping?

Rain knows he's won ahhhh what a smug cutie!

To Rain's credit, he does get back to work as soon as Phayu leaves.

just letting you know that I'm currently rewatching MLB Season 4 and yesterday it was time for Ephemeral and Kuro Neko!!! and let me tell you!!! both episodes make me go FERAL like I don't even know where to start. The way they both deal with central themes of the season, focus on Maribug's and Adrichat's individual arcs, and also tie back to the first two episodes of the season, like, uuuuughhhh. Yeah. I could write an essay on this but maybe not on anon in your inbox. Do you have any favourite episodes or moments in the forth season? <3

oh and I was with a friend who's watching MLB for the first time and after we had finished Kuro Neko she left the room while shouting "THIS IS NO LONGER A FUCKING KIDS SHOW" asdfsadasdfsf. What a mood

TO ANSWER UR QUESTION yes i have favorites in s4 for sure!! off the top of my head im very VERY fond of psycomedian bc of angry ladybug (it cracks me up so bad) and i also LOVE glaciator 2. and honestly im a huge fan of the first 3-4 episodes i just think they are so banger and all in a row like that like wow! also episodes like kuro neko r life changing. number one moment of the season tho? that goes to Ladynoir Hug at the end of strikeback. the way she looks at him and falls so fully and utterly in love and he engulfs her in a tight, TIGHT embrace, picking her up and saying You Still Have Me right at her LOWEST MOMENT where she thinks she doesnt deserve anything at all, least of all HIM, but he’s the one thing she gets to keep…….. outsold

IT WAS AWESOME!!! :D i wasnt really seeking other dteam stans but i contacted suli on twt and we went together!! and it was sooo cool i cant believe wilbur soot is a real person??? like i saw him and its probably the closest i will ever come to any of mcyters so that was HUGE for me like what the hell... and listening to song live was so cool and the new ones are bangers!! do you know one of the new songs is called warsaw??? 😭😭😭 i rewatched my recordings today again low key cant believe that had happened

Highlights of my sister playing Obey Me

First of all, she liked Beel before even beginning the game

.... anyway so im pi-rat ing movies again and I watched 3 yesterday so i have some movie reviews 4 u (.... might be spoilery so below the cut is jojo rabbit, devil wears prada, and rocketman)

movie 1: jojo rabbit: more movies need scenes of a 10 year old yelling fuck u hitler and kicking him out of a window. also scarjo’s accent in this sounds like collete from ratatouille. Stephen Merchant still only makes me think of portal 2 and holy shit he’s 6 foot 7???? 7.89/10 cried over some shoes that kid can act wOW. this movie i think has convinced me to finally watch what we do in the shadows too.

movie 2: devil wears prada: i’ve seen this before obviously and it’s still an absolute banger. first movie of meryl streep, stanley tucci, and emily blunts i ever saw. florals? for spring? groundbreaking. Still holds up. so glad this movie was made before social media would have to be included in it. U kno? 10/10 i will buy the dvd some day because it’s one of those movies i would want to flat out own.

movie 3: rocketman: had NOT seen this yet but had wanted to. fave of the night. (oh and this is elton john rocketman... i think there is a non elton john rocketman) i loVE how music is used in this movie. my favorite sequences are honky cat (which if u watch online it stops in the movie when they open the mini house) and the full rocketman sequence from the pool to the stadium. Also goodbye yellow brick road????? wOW. i will rewatch soon. 20/10 but if you do not like elton john songs u probably won’t like it lol. not a lot of time goes by before another bANGER is playing lol.

Favourite comfort food: hmm...if I had to pick one I would probably pick soup. Pumpkin is my favourite!! Makes the heart warm :’)

Favourite drink: chai. i don’t have it a lot but if I do get a drink when I go out for food that’s Not Dinner I always get that hehe

Favourite relaxing activity: listening to music! it’s also what i do when i’m anxious - too many thots in head, must distract with bangers

Favourite calming scent: vanilla!! or like, a really nice citrus. either one

Favourite relaxing (or uplifting) song: almost every time i play my comfort playlist i start with this one! it has a really sweet and beautiful acoustic sound, which i adore.

Favourite book to get lost in: Six of Crows duology! i don’t have my own copy, but when i had them on loan i didn’t want to return them after i was done just because i loved it so much and kept rereading my favourite parts :’D

Favourite TV show to chill-out: i recently rewatched Bee and Puppycat to chill so that was fun!! i come back to it once every year or so for no reason in particular. i just reaaally love the art

The best advice you’ve ever had: life is a constant learning process and you’re never, ever finished. i think in some ways i was brought up to believe that not knowing something was generally Bad(TM) and it was indicative of some sort of personal failing, but what that wasn’t acknowledging is that the future is providing every chance i can get to learn and to do better. i think it’s saved me from beating myself up over a lot of things that could be done better if i had just given myself the emotional space to actually learn how to

Premiere Impressions - Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club

Okay, here’s the one I was waiting for.

Anybody that’s followed me for a while knows that I gave Love Live! Sunshine!!’s second season a perfect score, which I stand by to this day. It was a defining moment for the idol genre, a high which many shows have tried to reach but without the heart, soul, or production budget, and now, several years later, one of the long-teased Love Live! followups has finally arrived on our TV screens.

I’m going to start with the one thing I’m not totally sold on yet - this episode sees two performances, and they both look...fine. Good. The CG is still just as good as last time, but the big problem is that this story places a heavy focus on solo numbers with each of the eventual Idol Club members all pursuing their own separate successes rather than teaming up as tradition would have it, and if you’ve played All Stars, you’re pretty aware of how most of this is going to go down. The issue is that there’s a lot that needs to be added to a solo anime performance to make it worth watching and rewatching, especially in comparison to the massive, incredibly-choreographed group tunes seen in its predecessors.

But everything else is right here - the new girls are a bit familiar but also different from the ones we had before in meaningful ways, up to and including one of them not even having been in the mobile game (I assume she’s actually the player character), and rather than starting as a grassroots movement to save their school, we meet the Idol Club immediately after it’s already disbanded, its members going their separate ways, and now it’s up to Yuu and Ayumu to put the dysfunctional band back together. I already love the way this first episode sets the two of them up, and even the usual end-of-the-first-episode, hopeful-starting-out song is touched by a callback to the beginning of the episode, paying off a setup I wasn’t sure was even a setup. This director is nearly a rookie, but series composer Jin Tanaka is just off the press from writing the script for Sing Yesterday for Me, and I’m sure he’ll have me ugly crying in no time flat.

Also, not four minutes in and my favorite of the new character tracks has already appeared and kicks all kinds of ass. CHASE is an absolute banger. What a good first impression.
