Being the new servant of the scarlet devil mansion

What would it be like to be part of the scarlet devil staff? be the servant of Remilia and Flandre? work with Sakuya and Meiling?

Meiling

To be honest, either you get along very well with her or she drives you crazy until you can't (like a certain maid)

Whatever the situation, this woman likes you

As a new servant of the mansion, the first few days she tried to surprise you by showing you her "good job as a gatekeeper"

But after 1 week she went back to doing the same thing she always does. sleep

Of course, if this happens you will always wake her up calmly

She really appreciates this, now she can wake up calm without fear of having a knife stuck in her forehead

Once you were talking about whether chinese tea was better than japanese tea, however, you did not realize that some "intruders" broke through the door and by the time you realized it was already too late

Consequence: a scolding from Sakuya

Whether you are doing your job well or decide to slack off, you will always have something to tell each other

Patchouli

You expected that she would not speak to you, and you were not so wrong, because for a while she did not speak to you

Until you entered the library

At that moment, you saw her reading some books, you had entered and she gave you a simple greeting

The books she was reading were in Esperanto so you didn't really understand much of what she was saying, however they seemed interesting, you asked her what they were about

Patiently, she'd tell you what those books were about, although to you she sounded natural, you noticed how her tone of voice was very low, and, in general, you had the impression that she seemed to be a very quiet person

Her mastery in the Wu Xung was something that caught your attention a lot in her

You asked her if she could use her fire ability to which she told you (for prevention) no

With the passage of time you understood why; her state of health was very poor, even some days you saw her very pale or coughing even when she didn't speak

That made you start giving her green leafy vegetables and other green, orange and yellow vegetables, and now the library is full of all of that

Every once in a while, you go to the bookstore to borrow a book from her (considering the true definition, not that of a certain blonde magician) or just hang out with her

Sakuya

If with Patchouli you thought you would never talk to her, with Sakuya you even thought that I would not even be able to be close to her physically

The head maid was known for being a very cold girl, concentrating a lot on her work, and being a very snobbish person in general

You had heard about her, generally mixed opinions, the "negative" ones from Meiling and other fairy servants and the positive ones, obviously, from her mistress

So the first time you met her, you didn't know how to act, technically she was your equal, however, she made you feel inferior just with her presence

Despite being the most servant servant, she did not treat you any differently, unlike Meiling, she simply gave you instructions as if you had been working for years

Seeing her work like that, you understood why Remilia assigned her as the head of the servants, she was the one who stood out the most in doing her job, in general, she was the one who took her job the most seriously

When you got to know her more and the first time you were able to interact outside of work, you realized that her "serious" personality was totally different

In fact, talking about what oxygen was or why a broken teapot didn't work was actually relaxing

From that moment you viewed her like this: Very disciplined in her work, but absurd for other things

You helped her with chores, because although at the time it seemed very rude of her, she was right; the servant fairies really helped very little. Although she told you that you don't have to do what she should do, she allows you to do it (unlike Meiling)

The times that she woke up Meiling by throwing knives at her has reduced thanks to you (and Meiling thanks you)

In her eyes, you're the only decent person in the mansion

Remilia

Your mistress, the youkai you worked for, your superior, she was someone you couldn't talk to informally

Although she tries to maintain the image of a mysterious and fearsome aristocratic vampire, her appearance and personality is very childish

With her reputation at Gensokyou, the first few days you tried to be as "perfect" as possible to make a good impression on her

And it must have worked, since every time she looked at you she just smiled giggly, approving your work

That was enough for you to secretly decrease in performance, but not to make it so obvious

The other residents of the mansion spend a lot of time catering to her whims, which include numerous parties, but you knew that inside she was dying of boredom

So, using the abilities of your spellcards, you entertained her for a while

It was funny to see how she pretended to be a very serious person, but in reality she was very silly

You did it, you had managed to become one of her favorite servants, not in performance or at the level of Sakuya, however, with a distinction among the other servants

And it was common for you to sit down to talk drinking tea served by Sakuya

Your relationship with her was quite curious. You felt like you were spending time with a little girl and at the same time a wise woman

Now you understood why Sakuya was so faithful to her

Flandre

It wasn't until several years working at the mansion that you had the chance to meet her

You had previously heard about her from Remilia and Meiling

Did the mistress have a little sister?

You didn't dare to ask the mistress, so you asked Sakuya, but she didn't answer you on that topic

So you made the decision to go to the basement to see for yourself if there really was someone in there

You hoped no one was around to do it, and you confirmed your suspicions

There was a little girl hugging a teddy bear

Seeing you, she got very excited, so much so that it caused the other residents to go see what was happening

At that moment you thought that your mistress would send you away, but she just sighed a little annoyed and told you who she was

That girl was so cute that you played with her, quite a lot

Thanks to you Flandre is not locked up for so long anymore, normally Remilia asks you to take care of her

Although sometimes she have to lock her up again because she tends to get too out of control

To Flandre, you are like her big sibling

I love when people who vote on polls that are like "which pair of characters is more [X quality]?" apparently just forget what the actual measurement criteria are and vote for ships they like.

For instance, in toho-vote.info's recent Best Rivals poll, how did Remilia/Sakuya, a master-servant pairing that you have to jump through more hoops than a circus lion to explain as a rivalry, place 31st out of 194+ rivalries? Who knows! It's really funny though!

I don't do a lot of shipping, but I realized I haven't done a post in months that isn't LostWord related, so here's my shipping chart with my boring shipping picks. My explanation for some of these:

Maribel / Renko: Don't know a single thing about the Sealing Club characters, but I believe it when people call that couple mega-turbo-super-canon

Hisami / Zanmu: Hisami for sure has feelings, this is more about wanting Zanmu to reciprocate / not wanting it to be 1-sided

Grassroots Polycule: I've always liked Wakasagihime X Kagerou, but I've started to like the idea of it being a polycule. The polycule dynamic is "introvert Sekibanki being adopted by extroverted Wakasagihime and Kagerou." I definitely prefer it over Kogasa X Sekibanki which doesn't work for me because canon Sekibanki hides her youkai nature, Kogasa is a fairly public youkai and they're both pretty active in the Human Village. I feel like their relationship would be strained by disagreements about how they'd hang out in the village / around humans. That'd be less of an issue with the Polycule, since they would only hang out outside of the Village (no gossip unless someone decides to trail Sekibanki all the way to Misty Lake, which won't happen). TBH I'd probably put Kogasa X Sekibanki as Past Fling if I ever remade this chart.

Depends How I'm Feeling: I just cannot settle on a Reimu ship. Reimu X Marisa should be the best option, but Reimu X Sanae amuses me (the idea of Kanako, Suwako, Yukari and Kasen having to be in-laws sounds hilarious) while Reimu X Akyuu has that tragic aspect (IIRC Akyuu's memory relates to youkai, so I imagine her future incarnations would have a lot of memories working with Reimu since she exterminates youkai. Future incarnations would know they were close, but they would not be able to recall the most intimate memories that had nothing to do with youkai. Basically, the ship is about future Children of Miare being cursed with incomplete memories of Reimu forever).

I Only See Them As Friends: It's mostly self-explanatory. Just adding that I respect others that ship these, even if I don't ship them myself.

(Not On This List) All The Ships I Hate: I didn't include them here, but I'm against pretty much every "Dating Your Boss" ship. So Eiki/Komachi, Youmu/Yuyuko, Ran/Yukari, Aya/Megumu, Sakuya/Remilia etc.

Some (dis)honorable mentions that aren't just "Dating Your Boss Is Bad" are the old school Tenshi ships that make her into a masochist (so Tenshi X Yuuka or Yukari) and also Reisen X Junko (because 99% of the time it's just "lol wouldn't it be hilarious to have Junko stalking / harassing Reisen?")

Also, Reimu X Mamizou and Sannyo X Mamizou are totally missing from the list. Sannyo X Mamizou would probably be my definitive Mamizou ship (they're both old, experienced and wise in different ways. Also, they'd totally smoke weed together). Reimu X Mamizou would be with the other Reimu ships and the appeal is similar to Reimu X Sanae but with shapeshifting shenanigans (I wanna see Reimu react to Mamizou turning into a copy of her).

hi who are your favourite touhou characters and why im mostly curious about the why

amazing question! the following list is in no particular order. wriggle does happen to be my favorite but it’s not by a huge margin or anything

first up we got wriggle herself. i’m gonna be honest the way i interpret her bears absolutely no resemblance to her canon character, but i think that the fandom has generally kind of adopted an interpretation of her that’s nothing like her in canon so i excuse it if everyone else does it.

why i like her? really cool design obviously the cape is really sick. what actually draws me to her though is mostly the fact that she’s a member of team 9. she’s basically just “kind of silly bug woman who’s really weird about bugs” which creates a lot of really funny relationships with other characters. i tend to write her as more of the “average person” of the group which also makes her relationship with mystia that write about a lot really fun because it’s just these two pranksters that are background characters from a story perspective and a life perspective (i mean they really are just random youkai). basically everything involving her is just… really casual, and fuzzy. she just doesn’t have a whole lot going on

also i get to write her being autistic about bugs which is really fun.

another one of my favorite characters is remilia, who i’ve only really had an excuse to write once. i go into way more detail about this in microsm chapter 6 but basically i just really love her contrasts. i like writing her as both childish and mature, both fearsome and welcoming, both powerful and vulnerable. it’s clear she does care very dearly for those in the mansion and i just love giving her a soft side where she does want the best for everyone, even if she looks evil. oh she eats people? god forbid women do anything

also because she’s a vampire who owns a badass huge western mansion. that’s so cool

in addition we have reimu, who i honestly just find to be a really nuanced character. i love writing her getting really existential about her life and getting worried about shit. i kind of project onto her sometimes but we’re not here to discuss that. she has a very interesting personality, fluctuating between stern or sad or determined or funny depending on even the slightest factors. being the main character she’s had the most actual stuff happen to her, she has the most story and has the most relationships with other characters. there’s really anything you can do with her, and if you can get her personality right then you can even make a good story out of her going on a walk. case in point: residual by me

the next ones i don’t really like for such complex reasons i’m not gonna lie

ran, who is probably my #2, is just a really nice character. it’s fun to write her being all motherly to chen, it’s fun to write her being a calculator for yukari, it’s fun to write about her being gay obviously, and i really like her character design. she’s just nice and i would definitely be friends with her if that were possible. i’m aroace but whatever the equivalent of a waifu is for aroaces? she’s that to me. i don’t wanna fuck her i just am obsessed with her non-romantically

lightning round:

i like sakuya because her time ability is really cool and it’s fun to write about this woman working herself to death. also bonus points because i love the sdm

aunn because she’s a really fucking funny dog

mystia because she’s a team 9 member too except she also does cooking and is in a band and i get to write her being gay with wriggle

kyouko because she’s really loud and also has a job at the temple and is also in a band

youmu because i like to imagine she has a huge inner conflict. read: any of my youmu x ran works

seija because she has so much potential to be a really interesting character, arguably even more than Reimu. i just haven’t wrote her because i still can’t get her character down

the entire palace of earth spirits because their family dynamic is absolutely hilarious and actually they’re all really funny characters even on their own

cirno because come on man it’s cirno

anyways that’s all the ones i’m obsessed with. i love all 2hus though

A surprisingly common ship: Flandre x Meiling

I see it as an entirely platonic thing. Meiling feels better suited as being like a warm older sister sort of figure to her, compared to the more prim and proper Remilia.

Also it's a cute idea to think of Meiling being close to Flan in the same way Sakuya is close to Remi. I'm not huge on them being romantic due to Flandre's general mental maturity as far as we can tell.

(remember: meiling is a megafan of anime and manga as seen in the hisotensoku games which incidentally gave her the most characterization, and likely would like light novels too)

Patchouli: Has already IP blocked at least half the people in Gensokyo.

Koakuma: Probably has a ridiculous storehouse of books bought from Rinnosuke’s side kindle business so she can read steamy demon x magician romances.

Sakuya: "No, Remi, don't look through my secret accounts! It has private work stuff on there and-----why yes, that's a picture I took of Meiling in a tankini I took at the summer festival. It's private work."

Remilia: “Huahahahaha! With my charisma, my TikTok dances are the most popular in the world---wha, Flandre?! How is your account more popular than mine?!”

Flandre: Literally has an account where she blows objects up on TikTok, which gained 1 million followers overnight after posting a clip where she blows up half the moon.
