I absolutely adore your whump prompts can I get "Character A, Expecting to be Tortured/Killed, Begs Mercy for Character B" for Anders/Fenris and if that doesn't spark joy maybe the song lyrics "guess I'll always be holding on to something borrowed"?
It had been my intention to get in some 100- or 200-word fill practice with this prompt, and then the following happened, so... thanks, Alice? /o\
Under the cut, please find ~1300 words of Anders/Fenris for @dadrunkwriting. This is a follow-up to some previous Anders/Fenris fills set post-DA2 (Part 1, Part 2). CW: non-graphic violence, some blood, non-explicit threats that might be interpreted as threats of noncon (not between main pairing).
-
From groggy depths, Anders hears Fenris pleading. Another nightmare. The last one ended with Fenris nearly tearing his throat out, and was followed by a day of resentful mutual silence that their tentative partnership still hasn’t recovered from. Consequently, Anders is motivated to respond appropriately this time. He struggles to move, body heavy with sleep, clumsy—
A woman replies in Tevene.
Awareness slams down hard on Anders, followed by white-hot panic. The last thing he remembers is an evening meal in a tavern, one he’d insisted on having when Fenris had wanted to move on. His hands and feet are bound, he’s lying in what feels like wet grass, and he’s been poisoned.
It’s not magebane. That means their captors must not know that he’s a mage, despite the grimy trails of someone else’s spellcasting around them. The poison has dried his mouth out; it makes his vision blur with cascading stars. It also seems to be wearing off, though not as fast as he wants.
“Please, lord, please,” Fenris is repeating, half in Tevene and half in the common tongue.
“Your friend is awake,” says the woman.
“Please, let me go,” says Fenris, and while Anders might once have fantasized about seeing Fenris humbled, this fearful, submissive tone is something he never wants to hear again. “This man is nothing, he will be missed by no one, you could take him in my place.”
Fenris is talking about Anders, Anders realizes. He has no feelings about that at all.
A second speaker cuts in, a man with a very upper-class accent. “I’d heard you were a sniveling little”—here he spits some word that can only be a slur—“but I didn’t expect you to be stupid. How disappointing. How would we pass off some random bumpkin as you, an elf with such a high price on his head?”
“What was he doing with you, anyway?” says the first speaker. “Can’t imagine who would willingly travel with such a creature.” She and her companion talk like Fenris, weaving their speech between languages.
“Do tell us,” says the second speaker.
Anders blinks hard, moves his head, and is able to make out part of the moonlit scene. There’s one man in a magister’s robes; a woman in clothing less gaudy but no less fine; and then Fenris, battered and half-naked and on his knees in the grass, his arms locked in front of him and held palm up in a pose of supplication.
Apparently Fenris’s answer isn’t coming fast enough. The second speaker grunts impatiently and turns to the other. “This is childish. Prisca, arm.”
Anders’ vision blurs again, but he doesn’t need to see to know what’s happening. A sick, sharp smell, an unnatural pull, splits the cool night like an ax through a log. Blood magic.
Fenris makes a choked-off noise of pain, residual energy from his brands pulsing. Anders is suddenly alight with rage.
Now, he thinks, would be a great time for you to wake up, Justice. But no response comes.
“Well?” There’s a smile in the voice of the second speaker, the blood mage who feels entitled to use his companion. He makes a last gesture with his hand, and Fenris jerks like a puppet in the grass before he gathers composure enough to answer.
“I picked him up. I meant to rob him.” The Tevene phrase Fenris chooses has a double meaning with a sexual connotation, more humiliating for him than for the cultural role he’s cast Anders in. The shame in his voice sounds real.
Prisca huffs in disgust; the blood mage laughs. “So we’re this poor traveler’s saviors, then.”
“Just hurry up and decide what you’re going to do, Simeon.”
“It’s hard. We could leave him here, but I like the idea of giving him a show first.” There’s a small gasp from Fenris, drawn in too late; Simeon chuckles. “Does he seem coherent enough to enjoy it?”
Prisca comes over and hauls Anders to his feet. Anders is shaking, still fighting off the poison. He’s too weak and too thin, has been for too long, and he’s not put on enough muscle since leaving Kirkwall. Prisca isn’t especially strong, but he wouldn’t be able to take her.
“Hey, you,” says Simeon to Anders, coming right up in his face. “Can you understand me?”
Anders closes his eyes.
Simeon says, petulantly, “I don’t know why we seem to keep encountering the boring type of stupid Northerner. I thought barbarians would be more fun.”
Prisca says, “Just leave him.”
“If I made him hold his eyes open and watch me—”
“It’d be my blood you’re wasting. Come on, you’ll have plenty of time to torment the elf before we collect that bounty.”
She’s still holding Anders up. Prisca isn’t a mage; she can’t feel a spell being gathered, and probably thinks his hands are just twitching from the effects of the poison. Simeon has no excuse, aside from being an overconfident idiot who was probably a nightmare to have as a classmate.
“I wouldn’t have to use your blood,” says Simeon, and close up, Anders hears the snick of a delicate little knife being drawn from some expensive sheath. “I could just use his. Not like he seems to be doing much with it.”
Anders directs lightning through him the second before he touches him.
-
It’s over faster than he expects. Seems like at least some of that blood mage’s arrogance shouldn’t have been misplaced, but there you are. He cleans the mess off as best he can and goes to Fenris.
The elf lies collapsed where he was. Anders sinks to his knees in the grass beside him; he tenses, but doesn’t move.
“Did you really think I’d let them leave with you?” Anders asks.
Fenris opens his eyes, slowly, and the answer is written on his face.
“Right,” says Anders, not bothering to hide his anger. “I hope these idiots also stole our belongings when they decided to drug and kidnap us, because I don’t have anything to heal you with.” He wouldn’t have enough mana even if Fenris let him use magic on him, but he knows better than to mention that.
A hand darts out and closes itself around Anders’ wrist. “You must allow me to explain.”
“Explain what?” Anders snaps, trembling with emotion and the beginnings of exhaustion. The protective fury he had felt on Fenris’s behalf, what seems like minutes before, has fled. “It’s clear what you think of me. Or is it that you wanted them to take you, just so you could get away from me?”
“Mage!” Fenris’s voice comes out as a growl, and his nails dig into Anders’ wrist. He swears a few times before continuing. “Will you cease prolonging my humiliation?”
Anders knows he isn’t being rational, but he can’t stop. “You thought I would abandon you, after we… You thought I’d just let someone hurt you. In front of me.”
“I am used to pain,” Fenris says quietly. “And I thought you were more injured than you are.”
Anders takes a moment to absorb this.
When he lets his attention fall there, Fenris’s face is open. If he were someone else, he might let Anders kiss him now; because he’s Fenris, Anders only looks at him. His fierce expression softens, and his grip on Anders’ wrist goes gentle.
“You know,” says Anders, keeping his tone light, “this is my fault, since I wanted to dine in that tavern so badly. If you wanted, you could say ‘I told you so.’”
“No need.” A flicker of a smile crosses Fenris’s face. “You will keep telling yourself, long past the point where I take any benefit from it.” The smile turns to a grimace when he tries to sit up.
“Stay put,” Anders chides, and goes to find something to heal him with.

A ranking of all the TTT stories in order of how much I liked them.
(Oh god this is so long)
1 My Mother's Axe
BABY ANDYYYYYYYYYYYY. Honestly this one had the trifecta of developing a character's motivations, developing a character's backstory, & developing their personality. The story starting out with Andy teaching Nile to use the axe was so charming and fun, and you could feel that chemistry they had in Opening Fire, the way they teased and bickered with each other so naturally. I loved the wedge between them on the subject of the axe, how Nile was perhaps a little too young to understand Andy's feelings about whether or not its the 'same' axe. I also love how the axe is obviously the symbol of the franchise and hugely important, but you never get a sense of exactly how important it is to Andy until you read the story.
I love the entire Ship of Theseus theme, and how it feels so natural that for Andy she has to get attached to the idea of things rather than the things themselves because she'll always outlive the things themselves-- the axe is symbolically her mom's axe, even if physically it isn't. And I love how she clearly clings to that concept so tightly. "This is the labrys she held in her hands...." IT GETS ME.
And the fact that this sense of BELONGING, of FAMILY, of CULTURE is so important to Andy that she clings to it (figuratively and literally) with both hands. And of course it's important to her, she spent so long alone that the woman doesn't even remember her birth name. That axe (or the idea of that axe) is all she has left of her mother and that family/culture she was born into.
PLUS on that note I love how Andy doesn't remember if her mom was her actual biological mother, but it doesn't matter to her. This woman was her mother in all the ways that counted. And how her mom BETRAYED AND KILLED Andy but Andy loved her so much that she avenged her and carried her axe for thousands of years. THOUSANDS OF YEARS!!!!!!
I also loved how the story transcends the timeline of the whole franchise and seeing Andy through the years. Loved seeing her with the varying squads and with varying axes. Also baby Andy was so cute. It was cool seeing her so young. like holy fuck. Andromache The Scythian, Immortal Warrior (but smol). Love that.
Also I think this one is one of the few ttt stories that doesn't suffer from length problems.
tldr: goddammit greg you've done it again.
2 Zanzibar and Other Harbors
Zanzibar my beloved. I've said before, but it's downright comedic how little regard there was for Joe and Nicky's character designs in this story. The same person who does the colors for the regular comic did the colors for this one too, and you can tell, every panel of this story was Beautiful.
Ik there was A Lot of criticism of this one (lmao @ how the fandom had no idea what was to come) but I thought a lot of The Discourse was a bit dramatic. I did think Nicky came off as a little oblivious to Joe's feelings in this story, but I've said before, I honestly think that was a 'tone not translating' thing. It felt like Nicky was nagging Joe for [checks notes] saving innocent people, but Joe was so amused by Nicky's complaints I really do think it was supposed to come off as teasing.
Plus I know the 'Joe running off into danger and Nicky reluctantly following' dynamic wasn't popular (I'm a pretty meh on it meself) but I did love how Joe's impulsiveness (if you want to call it that) was interpreted as heroism and not hot-hotheadedness. All of the examples Nicky and Joe talked about included Joe explicitly saving people. (and it also took A Lot for the nazi to actually provoke Joe).
I also feel like their characterization here was closest to the movie canon-- the bit where they hear the woman scream and Joe goes running in to save her while Nicky swoops in on Joe's heels to comfort her while Joe and the nazi were fighting reminds me of the train car scene. Joe had suggested First that they go find Nile because she needed to be protected, and Nicky later added that Nile probably also needed emotional support. Similar reactions.
But it was So Good, the themes of queer community and the enduring nature of queer culture are Not themes you see in media that often and it was such a delight how it was done. Also it's one of the few more modern TTT stories that has a completely valid excuse for taking place when it did. Chef's kiss.
3 Passchendaele
I love the Duality between seeing baby Andy and then seeing Mama Andy in the very next issue. This story doesn't have a ton of meat to it, but the entire concept of Andy adopting a war orphan straight off the battlefield PLUCKS MY TENDER LITTLE HEARTSTRINGS, and I think it's especially poignant for comic!Andy. I think most people wouldn't think twice about movie!Andy doing something like that but comic Andy is so hardened and almost cruel sometimes, and seeing that even for her the world hasn't beaten all of the compassion from her yet is SO!!!!!!! this woman contains MULTITUDES okay, she's violent and angry and tired and Done but she's also so kind and compassionate and THE STRENGTH OF HER!!!!! Also the idea of her and Yitzhak co-raising a kid together is so damn cute. It was #mysterious pre-Yitzhak-story but now it's cute. holy fuck. It's cute.
& the headbonk panel of her and Zeus lives in my heart. anyways.
4 Many Happy Returns
I Know people weren't thrilled about Booker being in this one, but I've developed a pet-peeve about that: this story was *not* booker-centric. Booker only exists in this story to the extent required to explain the importance of the gesture Nile makes towards him. If there was a story about Booker making some grand gesture of kindness to Nile no one would be saying it was Nile-centric. bc it wouldn't be! Booker exists in this story to explore Nile's kindness, its not about him. I saw that a couple times and it bothered me. anyways.
AAAAAAAAAA I loved this one, the art was beautiful, I loved how Andy Nile and Booker were drawn (like their comic selves but.. more looking like actual people). I loved Andy and Nile's Bants, how Andy wanted to jump right in and Do Violence but Nile was basically telling her to hold her horses.
I feel like I'm just repeating the post I made on this story a few days ago, but I LOVED how Nile's plan revolves not around violence or Cool Mercenary Skills but on Nile's own life skills (as she canonly did a lot of minimum wage job-hopping before the marines in comics canon). Her plan used her skills, not the skills of an immortal warrior, and HER SKILLS were in fact more useful for the situation! lov to see Nile's resourcefulness and planning skills.
AND HOW NILE WAS PROBABLY WATCHING BOOKER??? it's so Much bc 1.) nile knew booker A SINGLE DAY and yet he made such an impression on her emotionally that she had to keep an eye on him and 2.) she said in the movie she wanted Booker to get off free with an apology. Yes she's a member of the team but that doesn't mean she's necessarily going to follow orders like a good little soldier. I also love how she convinced Andy to go along with it. her HEART, her KINDNESS, her THOUGHTFULNESS, UGH.
5 The Bear
Honestly I have like no negative things to say about this one other than a.) character design issues which is less about the story itself and is more of a 'tog comic in general' criticism and b.) too short, but it was supposed to be a tease, so.
But I loved Yitzhak, I wasn't expecting to really like him at all but like I said in my other post, he tickled me. I love characters who are Kind™, especially if they have little reason to be so given their backgrounds. Chef's kiss. Lov him.
6 Bonsai Shokunin
I know this one was a little controversial bc of the outsider POV but whenever I see people upset about that they never point out that the Outsider Guy (the samurai) existed as a reflection on Noriko. His ideas are explained in the text to develop hers. The whole story follows how she gave mercy to a scared young man and in response he murdered Noriko, repeatedly! Who gave him the right to inflict such pain and suffering on the world? In his opinion, the lack of response from the gods was his permission. And for Noriko-- over and over again she dies and suffers because she gave mercy, which lines up with her ideas in FM about how it's their fate to rule mortals and if they don't align with that plan/fate/whatever then they suffer. It shows some background to those ideas and how they developed in her mind outside of Ocean Madness™. Additionally, his idea of 'the Gods have done nothing to strike me down so it's fine if I do these things' kind of explains how Noriko may justify her own morally corrupt actions-- she's died so many times and it's never stuck. Maybe if she did die any of those times, or while she was in the water, maybe that would've been a sign she was doing something right, or at least doing something normal. But she hasn't died. Fate isn't done with Noriko yet. And maybe there's a reason for that. In her mind, it's just not a very pleasant reason, is all.
There were things I was kind of meh about tho. I did kind of wish we saw something of Noriko and the team, or smth explaining the way she was before her dip in the pool-- personality, likes dislikes, etc. but it wasn't bad or anything. It was super vague tho, I had to read it a few times before I got what it was going for. Liked the art. Liked the bonsai metaphor. And of course I Respect the decision to use the 1300s (1200s? I don't remember off the top of my head) rather than using the last 200 years.
7 Strong Medicine
Honestly looking back, this one made me kind of sad because both this one and Bonsai Shokunin explored character's ideas on Fate and The Divine and how that intersects with immortality and I totally thought that theme would be continued, especially with Love Letters. But Then It Wasn't™.
Admittedly.... I had to re-read this one to remember most of it. I liked Booker's ideas on God, 'The conductor of the symphony just may not be very good at his trade' but the plot itself was kind of forgettable. Some fuckin cowboys try to kill a doctor (their second) because he couldn't save their sickly brother. Book tries to stop them, gets killed, and then comes back and kills them all before they get the doctor. Alright. I liked the artstyle because the characters were ugly in a similar way that leandro's are, but way more bearable.
I love the Irony of Booker concluding that there is no such thing as fate or destiny and nothing has meaning, AS HE UNKNOWINGLY SAVES MERRICK'S GRANDFATHER FROM BEING KILLED. Booker getting fucked over by life/god/destiny yet again. It also kind of explains about where the fuck hell Merrick's interest in immortal mercenaries even came from.
I originally had this one a lot higher and then I thought about it and moved it down like two spots.
8 Never Gets Old
I liked seeing Booker interact with his kid. And we got a name for the kid! Philippe was a little bitch though, he was a little obnoxious. I liked how Booker was so thrilled to experience a restaurant with his kid (and since we know he was there before, it can be assumed he went with all of his kids and yet he was so charmed each time). It fits with his line to Nicky in the moon landing story about how you don't appreciate beautiful things 'unless you have someone to share them with'. It was charming to see Booker interact with his kid, and to see him so happy. Also lmao @ Booker's big fat Ye Olde Crush on Andy.
However at the same time it was like.. of all the things to write about,,, I guess? Booker's Night Out...... alright. Especially since Book had so many stories.
I don't know, it was alright. The old man killing him really came out of nowhere, (but the 'Salut, asshole!' panel was funny tho).
9 How To Make a Ghost Town
I've hit a point where talking about these stories has gotten less fun. I liked this one but I felt like Achilles getting lynched was not really necessary for a story that was already tragic (a story that already involved Achilles doing a lot of suffering at the hand of bigots). When we first got the blurb for this story I thought it would be about Andy returning to the squad and making friends with Booker after losing Achilles and them butting heads on the idea of family and when to cut off ties. So a little bit of my underwhelmedness about this one might be just my expectations being different.
Honestly I was pretty interested in Andy and Achilles' relationship and I would've liked to see more of them-- like, what was their dynamic like? What did they love about each other?
But anyways Andy leaving and Achilles getting killed anyways feels so pointlessly tragic (which I suppose is the point..... I don't like tragedies) she left to save him and yet people killed him anyway. Meh.
I did love the bits about Andy wanting to have a domestic life (Andy and her multitudes again) and the little detail about how she buried her axe near the road but he buried his guns under his bed-- he was an escaped slave, he never had the luxury of assuredness like Andy did. It was a sad story.
10 Lacus Solitudinis
'You put this one above love letters crim??? how could you???' easy, lmao.
There was stuff in this one I liked. But to talk about stuff I didn't like: (I'll keep it brief, I know ragging on this story has been done time and time again)
UH, setting aside the 6 year cold shoulder between Joe and Nicky, I thought their chosen method of conflict resolution was... bad at best. Nicky's inability to talk about his feelings was also annoying, especially since the entire point of this story is a fight Joe and Nicky had, and yet we don't get both sides to the story, which is...... important? That fact is especially annoying bc in the absence of Nicky explaining his side of the story, it's absolutely a possible (and admittedly probably unintentional) interpretation of the text that we do get that Joe routinely resolves conflict between him and Nicky by simply cutting Nicky out of his life entirely until Nicky just. caves? Even if it takes years?
WHICH i could get into that interpretation and how fucked up i find it. but im not going to. out of restraint.
I don't know, I think there are a lot of interesting ways to go about this conflict but 'Nicky wants to kill a guy and Joe refuses to acknowledge his existence until he stops because he thinks Nicky is too much of a Good Boy to get his hands dirty like that' ('I wont watch as the world turns his (...) compassion into something ugly'. ) wasn't.. how I would've done it. (I mean you know Joe doesn't give a shit about what Nicky is doing in a moral way, because Joe doesn't even care or mention that Booker is killing those cops too. Joe only cares because he doesn't like the idea of Nicky changing in a way he finds undesirable.)
admittedly I've said before, I do like the emphasis Joe's reaction puts on Nicky's kindness. Joe has a complete inability to cope with Nicky simply Not Being Kind. It speaks to the steadiness of Nicky's compassion all those years. but still that fact doesn't make it the conflict feel worth it
hm. I said I would be brief and I wasn't.
oh well. basically I thought there was interesting conflict potential there but it wasn't done the way I would've liked, and the way it was done leaves a lot of disturbing (and again probably unintended) interpretations to lie.
What I did like? Andy and Joe having that pessimist/optimist dynamic. Joe nerding out about science. Andy not being impressed by The Achievements Of Man. I loved Booker needling at Nicky about his outdated slang and also trying to give him Older Brother advice practically in the same breath. I loved Booker giving The Worst relationship advice ever and Nicky being like 'I Will Not Do That, Ever, Thanks.' the family vibes were so good. The Joenicky vibes left a lot to be desired tho.
11 Love Letters
I talked about my problems with Nicky in this story (and Lacus Solitudinis). I don't know, the story isn't bad but I do hold a little bit of a grudge towards it because its very existence begs the existence of a solo Joe story and we didn't get one. If we never got this story, then we could happily count Lacus Solitudinis and Zanzibar as The Joenicky Stories™ and move on with our lives. sigh.
I remember when we first got the blurb for this story I was really curious about why Nicky specifically + the setting, and the answer kind of feels like 'the author had an idea for a story like this and saw ttt as a good enough place to utilize that idea'. Plus I was really underwhelmed by the Romantic Sentiment in the letter. If you look at it line-by-line, the majority of the letter is actually Nicky talking about how lonely and disturbed he is, rather than actual,, yknow,,, Romantic Sentiment. I mean, compare the van speech and this letter and this letter is just kind of meh in comparison. I liked nicky calling joe wise! and I liked the brief sun/moon metaphor! and otherwise it was eh. It didn't even have cute squad banter, which is why Lacus Solitudinis is above this one.
12 An Old Soul
Nun orgy. Nun orgy?????? Nun orgy.......
The whole story felt like a setup to have a nun orgy. Why did Booker have abs? Why did they do that to Andy's nose? ?????? the art was good at least.
nun orgy.

Hello again! May I request Rorveth for the ship game again? Maybe prerelationship 2, General 1, 5, Love 2, Domestic 9? Have a good day
Always! Rorveth owns my heart and I can always talk about them lol.
Pre-Relationship #2: What was their first impression of each other?
Hmm. I mean, there was definitely some hate, lbr. But I think there was also a lot of admiration? Well, I guess it depends on what we count as first impression. When they first learn of each other or when they first meet?
Because Roche found Iorveth long before Iorveth knew he existed. Roche had a crush worked intelligence, analyzing data and putting together who their targets in the Scoia'tael were. So I think he and Thaler and other intel folks would have come up with code names for each unit commander that they knew of (probably something lame too), but as we see in the game - the Scoia'tael are PROUD of their commander. They cheer Iorveth's name as they go into battle. It would not take many confrontations to start to put names to positions. So Roche's first impression of Iorveth would be one of someone recognizing a skilled opponent. But it would also be heavily countered by the details of what exactly Iorveth is using those skills for. Because they probably have an office somewhere in the Temerian royal palace that's full of pictures stuck to bulletin boards and string connecting them lol. So he'd have front and center in his mind exactly how brutal Iorveth can be.
So when they meet, I think Roche expects to appreciate Iorveth's ability, but hate him as a person. But then Iorveth introduces himself playing the fucking recorder flute!? Like, that had maybe been shared in intel, but it was the kind of meaningless detail that Roche had never really paid attention to. Which was a mistake, as it turns out, because Iorveth is every bit as much a musician as he is a soldier. But Roche only learns that later.
On Iorveth's side... well, he'd first hear of Roche when Roche and the Stripes, on their first day, slaughtered an entire unit of Scoia'tael. So I think Iorveth's first impression would be fury and hate, but also, as time goes on and it turns out that wasn't just a fluke, he'd come to respect Roche as an enemy commander. Then they meet and Roche is so full of hate for killing his king and Iorveth wasn't expecting that to hurt, but it really actually does. And he tries to shove it down and ignore it, but the feeling lingers long enough that he ends up seeking Roche out post-W2.
General #1: Who initiated the relationship, and how did it go?
Following the thread above... I think Iorveth did, but semi on accident. So he goes searching for Roche after Saskia has established Vergen and doesn't need him quite so much and this longing just won't stop nagging him. So he seeks Roche out and basically manages to say something along the lines of "I can't stop thinking about you and I'm going to make it your problem". Then he proceeds to follow Roche around and criticize his attempts at guerilla warfare as the Temerian partisans kicked off. Roche finds this absolutely baffling, but like, Iorveth is more experienced with this sort of thing, so why not take his advice? After arguing about it extensively, of course. Ves thinks this is all a Scoia'tael trap and keeps a very close eye on Iorveth. So close, in fact, that she notices the way that Iorveth looks at Roche over the campfire in the evenings. And once she notices that, suddenly the signs that Iorveth adores her Boss are everywhere. And she doesn't really know what to think about that or whether to tell Roche.
Not sure what she decides, but she definitely threatens Iorveth. And actually, I could see that being the first step in them coming to like, actually respect one another beyond "wow, you can kill a guy pretty efficiently". Like, maybe Iorveth begs asks as nicely as he can that Ves not tell Roche, because he's certain that it would only ruin things. And yeah, the longing is still there, but it's not so bad now that he has Roche in his life at all. He is grateful for as much of Roche as he can get.
i think Ves would be perfectly fine with that at first, but as she grows to appreciate Iorveth more as a person, she starts to feel bad. Because like, he very clearly loves Roche. And yeah, he probably has complicated feelings about loving a human, but like...he so clearly does and it's kind of pathetic but in a way that tugs at her heart and she HATES feeling sympathy for an elf, but...
I don't think she tells Roche directly. But she basically tells him that Iorveth is always staring at him and he should ask why. (Roche: because we're enemies, duh??? He's watching to see if I make a move to shank him, isn't he?)
General #5: What’s their height difference? Age difference?
Oh man, okay, this one is fun to play with. So, Roche is shorter than everyone most people and he is resentful about it. That whole thing about shorter people being closer to hell? Yeah, he is that 100%.
Iorveth, of course, enjoys very much that he is taller and will 100% grab Roche's paperwork or something and hold it out of reach just to enjoy Roche attempting to climb him to annoy Roche.
For age difference, I hc Roche as late 40s and Iorveth as around 1300, so it's a pretty big difference lol. I go back and forth on what elves think of such age differences, 'cause like... 40 is the age of majority for elves, so I could see them pointing at tired and wrinkled Roche and going, "that is a baby!"
But also, realistically, if they live so long (which they don't in canon, oops), i think they'd be a little more blase about age differences, as long as they're over the age of majority for their culture. Especially considering that they lost basically an entire generation of elves with Ailerinn's failed uprising + other pogroms like the cleansing of Loc Muinne, so like, the only elves left are either really old (pre-Conjunction) or really pretty young (200-300yo max, I think). So even if they don't already not care that much about age differences, I think they'd have to learn to, because there's not a lotta other options left.
(Not to derail, but Isengrim being torn up over being so much older than Eldain could be really, really fun, so I might ignore this lmao)
Love #2: What are their primary love languages?
Ooooh, Roche's is definitely touch! Just soft, casual touches, like a hand on the back or the shoulder, or just brushing their arms against each other or knocking their shoulders together to show that he's here. I think his receiving language might be more words of affirmation than touch, though. But that could be due to trauma/the fact that everyone in court does one thing and says another. So like, Foltest will clap him on the shoulder and then also go send him to torture someone. But then he'll also say 'good job' when Roche gets the intel they needed. So he has... kind of a fucked up relationship with both ideas, honestly.
Okay, I couldn't remember all 5 love languages, so I looked them up and fuck, Roche is very much acts of service, too. But in a self-sacrificing way.
Iorveth... hmm. I could see maybe receiving gifts just because it was such a rare and exciting thing when he was young. But along the same veins, I think quality time would mean a lot to him, because his family never made time for him. He always felt like he was in the way/bothering them while they're busy and hasn't fully yet come to understand that they should have made the time for him. So when Roche does things like call off work for the day to do something with Iorveth? Iorveth absolutely melts. I don't think he previously understood that time together could be precious, not because it's limited, but because it is special.
Domestic #9: Who’s more likely to convince the other to come back to sleep in the morning?
Iorveth is a night owl. And very much NOT a morning person. Roche is also not a morning person, but he doesn't even get the exchange of being a night person, he's just eternally Tired. So I think Roche tries to encourage Iorveth to come to bed during the night, but is rarely successful, because Iorveth feels inspired. Fortuntely, Roche has ear plugs/enjoys music when he sleeps.
But when one of them gets really fixated on their work and loses track of the time? It's almost always Roche obsessing over some ig or small problem, and Iorveth will try to get him to come to bed, but usually he has to resort to physically sitting in Roche's lap/getting between Roche and the fixation. But once he's gotten Roche distracted, he can get some nice cuddles and/or sex out of it and Roche falls asleep afterwards.
But when they wake up in the morning and need to get up and go to work? It's always Iorveth who tries to persuade Roche that if he can't get 30 mins more sleep, then he could at least offer some morning sex.

04.08 - Bet
My entry for the #DCMKEmogust2020 event!
Prompt of the day - Bet
Aoko searched around the vast crowd around them of screaming KID fans. When she spotted her quarry wrestling himself through the crowd, her face split into a huge smile. "Kaito!" She screamed happily trying to overpower the voices around her. She waved her arms for good measure trying to get his attention.
When his gaze landed on her he waved back with a smile. He disappeared again into the crowd however, when a few people started to tussle around him. He was impossible to spot again after that.
Suddenly behind her she heard a loud shout of "Aoko!" From her childhood friend. Turning around she spotted him again, now he was way closer than before.
She called his name again in a vain attempt to steer him in the right direction. He spotted her and used the elbow technique to get through. "Excuse me!" He proclaimed loudly while battling through the throng of people.
He sighed a huge sigh of relief as he was finally at her side. "Sorry Aoko, the crowd is huge tonight" he panted.
She hit him playfully on his arm "You shouldn't make a lady wait you know" she said matter of fact.
A grin split his face before he blurted out "What lady" she promptly hit him upside the head"
"Ow, Ahoko!" He complained.
"You deserve it" she sniffs haughty, completely ignoring his complaints.
"I bet Ahoko can't go five minutes without hitting me"
"Is that a real bet Bakaito because Aoko can too"
"Alright, you're on. A hundred yen you can't"
"Right back at you Bakaito"
He proceeds to flip her skirt. Aoko has her fist already up when Kaito drawls "it hasn't been five minutes yet"
She has to physically restrain her own wrist to keep from whacking him. She clenched her jaw and hands together in seething frustration.
Kaito snickers and dyes someone's hair in the crowd. Aoko takes a deep breath and holds it, then lets it out explosively when he loudly announced "Ahoko?! You're on your period?! I wouldn't have guessed!" She tenses up ln barley contained rage, like she wanna strangle him.
"Five minutes are up" he mutters and hands her the 100 yen. She whacks him on the head for good measure. "Ow! Ahoko!"
"Again, you deserve it" she sneers before she continues with "Aoko bets Bakaito can't change that woman's clothes without her noticing" she points to a very snobby looking woman who has literally been checking her hand mirror 12 times in the last 30 minutes. "200 yen you can't"
Kaito grins "No problem Ahoko"
Before she can change her stakes he masterfully, without moving from his spot changes her clothes to a sexy clown outfit. Though when she turns around only the back half her clothes are changed. She is none the wiser of the change.
Aoko gapes "How did you even…" she sighs and gives him his 200 yen.
He cackled delightfully as he gets his money "I bet 300 yen Aoko can't walk up to that guy and ask him to change shirts with you" he pointed to a guy with a black 'I love KID' shirt that was in about the same size as his childhood friend. She was wearing a very pink frilly shirt so there was no way he would wanna switch his black shirt with her.
She smirked "Aoko can too" she says walking up to him. Kaito watches with growing trepidation as she talks animatedly with him for a few minutes. And then lo and behold they switched shirts. Kaito was speechless.
She looks smug as she walks up to him again with the shirt "How did Aoko do?"
He drags a hand over his face and gives her the 300 yen. Muttering all the while.
It just escalated from there...
"Aoko bets 400 Kaito can't make it to that lamp post and climb it to the top in 5 minutes" The lamp post was about 100 meters from them, a short distance if you didn't account for the mass of people.
"I'll make it in two" he announced and sprints into the crowd.
He did it obviously.
"SEE AHOKO! I MADE IT IN TWO!" He yells unnecessarily.
And escalated…
"I bet 600 yen Ahoko can't climb that tree"
"I bet 700 yen Bakaito can't scale that building in-"
"I bet 1000 Ahoko can’t-"
"I bet 1300-!"
"I bet 1500-!"
“I bet 1800-!”
By now their betting session had escalated so much they had formed a crowd around them. Everyone was watching the spectacle with laughter and their own little bets on who would win this time.
They both panted and was at a standstill. They had totally forgotten where they were at this point.
Suddenly Aoko gets a sly grin on her face. Kaito feels dread in his veins at her expression "You wanna bet again Bakaito?" She asks all smug. "You get 2500 yen if you can do it"
Kaito narrows his eyes, she was way to smug right now. He was wary "Alright, bring it on Ahoko" he challenges.
She looks around and spots a random fellow in the crowd "Aoko bets 2500 yen Kaito don't have the courage to kiss that guy!" She says loudly and points towards a guy a few meters from them. Damn it, she knew he was too afraid of the damn looks people would give him if he admitted to liking guys. Did she want to win that badly?
The guy she had pointed to had his back towards them, and what a nice back that was. It was perfectly sculpted by his tight t-shirt. He looked ripped, tall, darker skinned and he could just imagine the handsome face he would have. But, that was besides the point.
Kaito glares at her and she glares right back with a smirk on her face in challenge.
"Alright! Fine!" he declared "I'm gonna prove Ahoko wrong!" He says with way more courage than he feels.
-----
Makoto was chatting with his friend when he hears someone say "Excuse me" behind him, tapping his shoulder. He turns around, a polite question on his tongue when he suddenly gets pulled down by his shirt, into a kiss. Tongue and all. what the…
Suddenly the moment is broken as the guy breaks the kiss a little breathless with tinted cheeks. He suddenly shouts "There Ahoko! I did it!" To a girl further away who sticks her tongue out at him in response. Makoto can feel himself starting to blush.
"Sorry man" he guy apologises with a sheepish grin, how cute. "You are just so handsome-" he backtracks "I mean... It was a bet or maybe more like a dare" he pats his shoulder in an awkward apology. He then proceeds to walk up to his friend again and start his shouting match anew.
What was that...
---
Kaito starts his bet with Ahoko again. As he starts shouting again he gets interrupted mid sentence by a tap on his shoulder. He turns around with a loud "what?" On his tongue. He doesn't get a chance to utter it before he suddenly gets kissed by the same tall and handsome guy he kissed earlier. The kiss is hot and needy and oh my god so right.
They break apart in the end, needing to breath. And everything around them is tuned out as they gaze into each other's eyes. "My name is Kyogoku Makoto, what's yours?"
Kaito who is on cloud nine just answers him just like that "Hi Makoto, I'm Kuroba Kaito"
Unfortunately the moment is broken when three officers walks up to the trio. Aoko looks starstruck at the side
"Are you the ones who have caused such a commotion?" One of the officers asks with a frown.
Kaito and Aoko chuckles nervously.
---
Despite all of Aoko and Kaito's protests or otherwise, they get thrown out of the heist premises. "Great, this is your fault Ahoko"
"How is this my fault Bakaito!" She seethes.
Kaito ignores her in favour of Makoto "You weren't causing any trouble so why did you follow us out?"
Makoto fidgeted a bit "I just wanted your number" he says with a soft smile.
Kaito is dumbfounded and melting at the same time. He is adorable. The magician grins happily and jotted down his number on a playing card and gives it to him "Here, it would be nice to see you again"
He received the card with care in his movements, like it was precious "Likewise, Kaito-kun" he says with a blush, his smile is blinding. "You will have to excuse me, I need to get back before the heist starts" and with that he leaves Aoko and Kaito to their own devices.
Aoko hits his shoulder "Way to go Kaito! You scored a looker" Kaito puts his embarrassed face in his hands to hide his happy grin. Oh man he did, didn't he.
Suddenly reality hits him in the face "Aoko… what time is it?"
She looks at him in curiosity before she checks the time on her phone "It's a little past 11, why?"
Kaito panics. Oh shit. "I just remembered something I need to do! I'll see you later Aoko!" He calls back over his shoulder as he sprints full speed away from the heist location. "Wait Bakaito!" Aoko calls.
He ignores her, way too focused on the need to double back quickly so he can get to his heist. Mildly on time.
This was the first time in a long long time that Kaitou KID was late to his own heist.

The Crumbling Tower of 2020
Notes on the Triple Conjunction
Tumblr media
Hello friends. What follows is a short introduction to the incredibly rare and historical astrological conditions of the year 2020. This was written with the intention of accessibility first and foremost; I believe it’s important that people have some idea of this moment in a historical context, and the tools to evaluate the themes and stories that are emerging currently and in the near future. To my eyes astrology is at its most useful when it is neither prescriptive nor prophetic. It is foremost a tool of psychological midwifery; reading the meaning of the world and its events.
So it’s in my interest to be painting in broad strokes. If you want concrete predictions or exact dates for orbs of conjunction now and in history, then there is a vast field of mundane astrology for you to Google. The myths I’m unfolding here are only for context and consideration—I hope you find them helpful.
Also, there will be a major western bias in my evaluation of history, which sucks, but that’s the milieu I grew up in and can speak to, and it remains the information most easily available. But of course astrological conditions are affecting the entire world. We can still trace the vibe through western examples.
Our Axial Moment There are two incredibly rare astrological events happening this year. One event is the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in the sign of Aquarius. These two planets come together routinely, mechanically, every 20 years. But the rhythm of their waltz is such that each meeting takes place in signs of the same element for 200 years at a time. So when they conjoin in Aquarius, in the last weeks of 2020, that will be their first time together in an air sign since the 14th century.
Since 1802, all of their conjunctions have been in earth signs. (Much more on the significance of this later, but some may already notice this 200 period’s coincidence with the industrial revolution and the age of capital). In the 200-odd years before 1802, they would join every time in fire signs—and for the 200 years before that, water. One waltz more brings us back to the 1300s and 1200s, the previous epoch of air signs. Returning to the present day, we should realize that since an age like this persists for two centuries at a time, it is essentially impossible for someone who witnesses such a transition, to have ever even known anyone who witnessed the previous transition. That is, the 100 year old person in December 2020—even if they had, as a newborn, shared a breath with a 100 year old person—would not reach far back enough in history to have even a dim, second-hand knowledge of the epoch of fire (1603-1801). These periods are effectively the frame edges; the curtains around the drama of the world stage.
Rare as it is, the other historical aspect of the year is much rarer: the fact that Saturn and Jupiter will also conjoin Pluto in Capricorn before they dance their first step together in Aquarius. Though these 3 will never occupy the exact same degree together, they will come very close, on and off throughout 2020. Of course a triple conjunction of planets will always occur in more unpredictable intervals than any pair of planets because of the 3 separate orbits. Famously—well, famous among astrologers—it last happened in the sign of Capricorn during the founding year of the city of Babylon, 1894 BCE.
Tumblr media
History of the Elemental Epochs Because the Jupiter-Saturn synodic cycle is so regular, and because we didn’t know about outer planets til the 18th century, the dance of these two planets through the elemental stations is by far the oldest astrological tool for determining epochal periods. It has long been assumed to be the basic attitudinal/affective backdrop of the zeitgeist. (Now that we know about Pluto, we have a new vibecheck every 12 years! But isn’t it funny that generations didn’t have names until we noticed Pluto in 1930?)
I would be remiss not to mention that there are overlaps between these periods. For instance, Jupiter and Saturn were briefly conjunct in an air sign (Libra) for a few months in 1981. So toward the end of each epoch, humanity gets a little multi-month preview of the coming age. 1981 and the transitional period is a whole other topic in itself, but that’s all I’ll say here.
Even though these elemental ages have been observed for so long, we don’t have a ton of historical examples to draw upon to get a sense of the nature of a particular epoch. As for the air age that we’re entering into, we can refer to the high medieval period as the last instantiation, but to get a third example we have to go into history 6 centuries before that! Soon the world starts to look so different from the current day, that we have to stretch the imagination that much farther. So let’s just a get a brief summary of the previous cycle through the elements.
Earth 1802-2020
This is the epoch we are still in as I write this. It began during the industrial revolution, and the earth themes are undeniable. Human begins have had a resolutely atomic understanding of the universe; materialism is rampant; and it feels that capital and capitalism are catalysts of most human drama. We take things literally and concretely: instead of speculating about other realms, we want to drive our spaceships to big slabs of land like the moon and Mars. We have discovered how to build and make so much STUFF!
Fire 1603-1801
This period is famous for the enlightenment and the French and American revolutions. The time of great sparks! Reason, brilliance, luminance ... self-validation and self-determination. This is really when human beings began to appreciate the value of the idiosyncrasy of a particular thinker. “THIS dude’s contribution” etc. Rights, laws, freedom, were all in vogue. “Here I am!” say the fire signs.
Water 1425-1602
Just as materialist scientism was born out of the liberating thought of the enlightenment, so were the insights of the enlightenment enabled by the world-broadening discoveries of the renaissance. During the water epoch, everyone was sailing everywhere, being introduced to new cultures, and the “new world” was reached by the Europeans. At home, classics of antiquity were being rediscovered and the world was broadened in that sense. Shakespeare was poppin off in a big way. The concept of the stage is essentially water; water is the idea that there is an affective component to reality at all.
Air 1226-1424
Is it a coincidence that the least widely known stage of the cycle is the one we are now entering? Or is that just the nature of history, as it fades further into the past? This period was called, in the West, the “high medieval” era. It was marked by civic demarcations that more or less persist to this day—the previous few hundred years saw constantly changing borders, but now people grouped more firmly into ethnic or national identities drawn to territories. This is also where we got chivalry and the first real rights for women in a long time. And there was the discovery of an actual social life and leisure. “Hanging out” was invented, thank God.
Reality itself received a major patch update: we invented mechanical clocks, which caused people to relate to the passage of time in a totally new way. We used to just slice up the sunrise-to-sundown period into 12 equal parts; now hours were a constant length throughout the year. Common folk had glass windows in their homes for the first time, and the elite even wore glass in front of their eyes to correct their vision. Music became much more complex, as people had more time to take it seriously and form theories. People could go to libraries; for the first time ever there were more books in cities than in monasteries. Cities were finally the place to be. We invented the compass, the game of chess, and the printing press. The astrolabe, like the compass, allowed us to orient ourselves to something that was formerly hopelessly abstract (the stars). Most of this cool shit came from the Arab world, which was flourishing.
Air Epoch 2.0 That’s the historical overview. Obviously there is much, much more there for any anthropologist or history of philosophy ass person. But we are beginning to see some idea of the relation between the qualities symbolized by the elements and the respective periods. Now we can begin a more informed speculation.
The movement from the previous earth age to the previous air age seems to be one of dramatically more complex social relations. Less emphasis on the riches of a kingdom, and more emphasis on its culture, civility, and sophistication. Abstract things became the treasures. As we look to our own incoming air epoch, it is easy to envision a world that places more emphasis on networks instead of objects. Social media, gig economy, and blockchain all appear to be prefigurations of this. In terms of philosophy, it no longer seems very radical to conceptualize oneself as part of a universe whose essential composition is not defined by particles (nouns) but relations and processes (verbs).
Tumblr media
What Was Babylon? I ain’t no student of ancient culture. Until a few months ago, I didn’t even know Babylon was where Iraq is. Of course I think it would behoove all of us to research as much as possible the previous instantiation of this astrological aspect, but I also think it’s valid to speak about its cultural impact through a layman’s osmosis.  As far as I can tell: what is Babylon best remembered for? The miraculous hanging gardens, the Tower of Babel, and the law code of Hammurabi. Hammurabi’s code, inscribed onto a stele about a century after the founding of Babylon is celebrated as the first known written laws, some 190 edicts long—and by the estimation of modern scholars, supremely humanitarian for its time. What is the modern equivalent of the ancient innovation of codified laws? Hard to fathom, but something for us to consider as the new age dawns.
More famously, there is the story of the Tower of Babel. A persistent image of human hubris, even today people respond to the tower motif as a symbol of defiance of God or of nature, and it is routinely invoked when artists and pundits comment on the ecological folly of industrial enterprise. Human beings tried to use their intellectual capacities to reach the position of God. Without reading the Bible, I can tell you that the punishment for this was the diversification of languages. All of a sudden people couldn’t speak to each other, because there were so many ways to speak.
Today we take for granted the many languages of human beings, so what is the modern equivalent of this event? Taken as a metaphor, the variation of languages could represent a variation of worldview. Styles of interfacing with reality. Because the element of air is so closely associated with concepts like perception, the structuring of thought, communication, and virtual realities, we might imagine that in the new age we will begin to understand just how deeply diversified our mechanisms of interpreting reality are. Phenomenology seems like a pretty fringe field in our current world, but AI is certainly not; and content creators have increasingly brought phenomenological themes to the center of their work over the last couple decades. Just as the previous air epoch (12/1300s) saw the advent of movable type, perhaps we will soon develop novel means of recording our impressionistic realities.
Finally, Babylon was host to the famous hanging gardens. Supposedly built by king Nebuchadnezzar to please his wife who missed the natural beauty of Iran, it is still unclear whether this wonder of the world ever existed in physical reality. In any case, the story is relevant: a ruler, in the midst of tremendous infrastructural expansion, and with it the inevitable subjugation of nature, finds that his greatest cultural influence across the centuries is ecological restoration. Looking at these three legacies of Babylon together is rather interesting: the law code stele, though purportedly divine in origin, is unquestionably real to our materialist sensibilities—you can go and see it. The Tower of Babel, taken from the Bible, was probably not real in the same fundamental way; though there was without question a great ziggurat in Babylon, the Biblical account is not literal. The hanging gardens is the most mythological. So between the three we have different concentrations of myth and historical fact.
Second Second Life I write this in the first few weeks of social isolation during the coronavirus pandemic. There is much more to be said about the connection between this unprecedented social condition and the imminent radical astrology—maybe the subject of some other essay. But off the dome, we can see plainly the defaulting of Capricornian things: governments, businesses, economies, and social infrastructure. Without much of a choice, we are withdrawing our energy from the material to which we are accustomed. We’re cooped up in our houses, where the merciful currents of the internet continue to draw us on, to operate in cyberspace as normal. New social functions and vocabularies are already emerging as we are forced to reconsider the online networks that have seemed so toxic for the last few years. People find themselves operating “peer to peer” out of necessity. Some “inessential” products may no longer be available on amazon, but your neighbor might have them. More importantly, people are reaching out to each other for nothing more than human contact. We’ve been wringing our hands about the importance of human connection, but capitalism—through spectacle or stranglehold—has drawn us away from putting it first.
Social service is (along with certain essential aspects of the internet) ruled by Aquarius. Saturn, governor of concern, has already ingressed into this sign, but will retrograde back out in a few months; and then at the end of the year, it will be joined by Jupiter, who greases the wheels, expands the potentiation of Saturn’s concern, and affords prosperity to those who take social service seriously. And together they will inaugurate the new age.

The construction was called to a stop the moment they found the bones. The work crew was preparing a building site along one of London’s many ancients streets when they uncovered what appeared to be a body – or, at least, the remains of one. It was clearly old, given that nothing but bones could be seen beneath the dirt, so a team of archaeologists was brought in to preserve and study the remains. In the end, they determined that the bones belonged to a teenage girl who had lived in London over 1600 years ago – a Roman girl. It’s not the last time something like that has happened in this city. During some development work near Spitalfields Market in the 1990s, a work crew uncovered what turned out to be an entire Roman cemetery. Among the finds was a perfectly preserved lead coffin, its lid covered in beautiful artwork that had been hammered right into the surface, still visible, all these centuries later.
And that’s the way history tends to work – time will bury it under new and current events. But if we dig deep enough, and brush away the soil, we can come face to face with it all over again. The past never truly goes away, after all. It’s there, waiting to be discovered, so that we can study it and relearn the stories it contains. Oftentimes, though, the things that leave the deepest marks tend to be the most tragic and painful, events that rattled people to their core and left a shadow on the history of a place that no amount of sunlight could ever chase away, and the older the city, the more common those shadows tend to be. Which is why I want to take you on a tour of one of the oldest, because while the past is always nearby in our modern world, few places allow it to dwell so close to the present as the city of London. Its past is both a treasury of historic significance and crypt full of the darkest tragedies we could ever imagine. Because in a city filled with so much light, there’s bound to be some shadows. I’m Aaron Mahnke, and this is Lore.
London is ancient, there’s really no other way to say it. Most Americans live in a community that’s less than 200 years old. If you’re in New England or one of the other places with roots in pre-colonial America, perhaps those locations go back a bit further, but London’s history makes all of those seem brand new by comparison. Archaeological work in London can place humans in the area as far back as 4500BC, but if we’re looking for a major settlement where it stands today, that didn’t happen until 47AD, when the Romans arrived and set up a community there that they called “Londinium”. Although from what we can tell, it didn’t last long, all thanks to a woman named Boudicca. As far as historians know, Boudicca was the wife of King Prasutagus, who ruled over an eastern British tribe known as the Iceni. When the Romans arrived in their territory in 43AD, they came to an arrangement with Prasutagus, allowing him to maintain control of his kingdom. When he died 17 years later, though, the Romans refused to acknowledge his widow as the new ruler, and instead invaded them to take the land for themselves. But they misjudged Boudica, assuming she was a quiet woman, incapable of ruling anything. Instead, she rallied a massive army of close to 100,000 warriors and then led them on a campaign against the Romans all over Britain. In 61AD, her army rolled over Londinium like a Sherman tank, burning the entire settlement to the ground. In fact, her campaign against them was so fierce and unstoppable that the Romans nearly left Britain altogether. But those who survived managed to rebuild, and within a handful of decades it had grown large enough to become capital of the entire province.
Over the years, the city continued to expand and mature, and even though the Romans left towards the beginning of the fifth century, the community there refused to die. By the 7th century, London had earned a reputation as a major trade centre, which brought in a steady flow of wealth and goods, and also turned the city into a political powerhouse. Of course, power and wealth has a way of making a community a target for others, and London was no exception. In 1066, William the Conqueror sailed across the English Channel and earned his nickname by taking control of the entire kingdom and making it his own – and, of course, special attention was paid to London. Within two decades, the population of the city had reached nearly 15,000, and by the 1300s that had multiplied to over 80,000.
But something unexpected was heading their way that would ravage that growing community, something mysterious and dangerous and seemingly unstoppable – the Black Death. What started as a plague in western Asia quickly spread to Europe, bringing death and destruction to every community it touched. By the time the Black Death had burned itself out, some historians estimate that upwards of two hundred million people were dead. The people of London lost at least 10,000 lives, most of whom were buried outside the city walls. It wouldn’t be the last time the city would face tragedy. In 1664, a fresh outbreak of the plague killed another 100,000 people, and then two years later, in September of 1666, a fire broke out in the house of a baker on Pudding Lane. It eventually spread west, destroying much of the city as it went, and while there were only six verified casualties, historians now think the fire burned hot enough to completely cremate those who were caught in it, making the true death toll anyone’s guess.
So much of London’s history was tragic and outside human control, but there have also been moments along the way that could only be blamed on the people who lived there. Jack the Ripper and the murders that took place in 1888 in the Whitechapel district of the city are always front and centre in most people’s minds. But there has been a lot more bloodshed than just those five innocent women. In fact, a lot of the city’s murder and violence could be found higher up the ladder, in the very chambers and homes of the people who held the power and wealth. It seemed that rather than being immune to the shadows that lingered in the city, even the powerful could fall under their spell. Because if there’s one thing the nobility of England’s past seem to attract more than anything else, it was pain and suffering and death.
We don’t need to look far to find bloody nobles. It sometimes feels as though all we have to do is open a history book and flip it to a random page. Life at the top was often a cutthroat game, both figuratively and literally, and anyone who found themselves in the orbit of a king or queen certainly understood that risk. A great example of how blood-thirsty the English kings could be was Henry VIII. Henry is known for a lot of things, not all of which are so great in retrospect. He expanded the power of the crown during his lifetime and based a lot of that on his belief in the divine right of kings, something that threatened the freedom of his people. He was greedy and vindictive and had an ego that was only surpassed in size by the codpiece on his armour. But if there is one thing that most people remember today about Henry VIII, it’s his many wives. Henry had six of them, half of whom were named Catherine, which must have made it a lot easier for him, I’m sure. Five of those six wives came and went within a single 10-year period in his life, but not all of those breakups were friendly. After having his first marriage annulled in 1533 and sparking the English Reformation and the country’s separation from the Catholic church, Henry married the sister of a former lover, a women named Anne Boleyn. Three years later, he had her executed for treason and adultery, but also possibly for failing to deliver a male heir.
The day after Anne’s beheading, Henry proposed to one of her ladies in waiting, Jane Seymour. They had apparently fallen in love months before, but Jane had managed to hold off Henry’s advances in the name of honour. Once the queen was dead, though, she was much more agreeable. They were married 10 days later. From everything I can tell, Henry believed that Jane Seymour was “the one” – he viewed her as his perfect queen, and when she gave birth to his first male heir a year later, he probably sighed with relief. The complications from the birth put her life at risk, and over the two weeks that followed she slowly declined. In October of 1537, Jane Seymour passed away. That had taken place at Hampton Court Palace, Henry’s favourite London residence. It was a mixture of a pleasure palace, a theatre and a royal home, so when Henry brought his next two wives through those doors over the next few years, they were probably bittersweet moments. A lot of joy would be possible there, but it would also sit in the shadows of a painful past. His fifth wife, Catherine Howard, made a fool of the king by conducting at least one less-than-secret affair. After learning about what she had done, Henry had Catherine arrested and thrown in a prison cell there, at the house. She was only 18 at the time, and I can’t imagine the fear and desperation she must have felt, being a prisoner of the most powerful man in the kingdom.
According to the stories, though, Catherine managed to slip away from her guards one day, while being walked through the palace. She bolted away and ran down one of the long galleries that led to the king’s chapel, where she knew Henry could be found. Her goal was probably to beg for forgiveness, to ask for mercy and to plead for her life. But the guards caught up to her before that could happen, and her screams of terror were the only thing to reach him. Catherine Howard was beheaded a short while later, and Henry moved onto a new wife, also named Catherine. But just because those former wives were gone, doesn’t mean they were forgotten. In fact, if the stories are true, they might have stuck around to serve as a cruel reminder. It’s said that even today, visitors to that long gallery in the palace have heard echoes of a woman screaming, a desperate, panicked cry that chills them to the bones. Others have heard the quick rhythm of footsteps, as if someone were running down the hallway. And in 1999, according to one source, two different tourists fainted in the gallery at different times on the very same day.
Elsewhere in Hampton Court Palace, other shadows have stuck around as well. In a room at the top of the staircase known as Silver Stick Stairs, multiple visitors have claimed to have seen the figure of a pale women. She stands silently, hovering slightly above the floor, with a mournful expression and vacant eyes. For those who have witnessed it, the spectre has been both calming and terrifying. Whether or not the visions are real, though, it’s fascinating to look at the true history of that room, because while it has been used for countless purposes over the last few centuries, one specific resident stands out above all the others. It was in this room, you see, that Henry VIII’s only male heir was born to his true love, Jane Seymour, and it was there, just two weeks later, that she passed away.
The old home, located on Berkeley Square, is a townhouse, just one of many in a long row of similar facades, but as far back as the mid-19th century, it was different enough to stand out from all the others. But before I continue with the legends, let me be clear that not a lot is known about the house’s origins, and a lot of stories have yet to be completely verified. Still, we know enough to make this a journey worth taking – so let’s get started. The majority of the tales begin with the man who owned the house back in the 1860s. Thomas Myers wasn’t the first to live there, but he was certainly the most infamous. It’s said that he had once been engaged to be married, but his fiancée eventually changed her mind and ended their relationship. Broken and distraught, he retreated into his house and was rarely ever seen again. Neighbours claim that the house would be dead during the day, only to come alive at night. It was as if Thomas had traded in the sunlight for the shadows, living the rest of his life during those moments when most of the world was asleep, and it might very well be whispers of the house all lit up at night that first gave birth to the rumour that it was haunted – but it could also have been what happened next.
Sometime around 1872, the house sold to a new family, and they moved in to clean up the home and make it their own. The couple had two daughters, both in their late teens, and there were precious few years left for the parents to enjoy life as a family in this new setting before they became empty-nesters. In the weeks that followed, though, the future crept in. The oldest of the two daughters became engaged to a young officer named Captain Kentfield, and conversation became filled with talk of wedding plans and guests lists. And at some point in their engagement, Captain Kentfield planned a visit, so the family set about preparing the attic bedroom for his arrival. According to the story, what happened next is still shrouded in mystery. The family maid was sent up to put the final touches on the fiancé’s room, and while she was up there, the family heard her scream. At once, everyone in the house rushed upstairs to see what had happened, only to find her lying on the floor, an expression of complete horror painted across her face. More mysterious yet was that she couldn’t seem to put a complete sentence together and was unable to answer any of the questions the family asked her. All the maid was able to do was mutter a low, cryptic refrain. “Don’t let it touch me. Don’t let it touch me”.
The maid was immediately taken to the hospital to recover, where I imagine someone observed her, and did their best to treat her rattled nerves, but other than that, there was little they could do. Sleep, they assumed, would be the best medicine. The following morning, though, she was found dead in her room. The fiancé arrived the next day, and after hearing the stories of the maid’s unexpected death, he decided to check the room out for himself. Maybe he was playing the brave soldier in front of his future in-laws in an effort to impress them, or perhaps his fiancée needed some reassurance and he wanted to calm her nerves. Whatever the reason, he climbed the stairs to the attic bedroom and declared that he would keep watch throughout the night. In the darkest hours of the morning, though, a gunshot pulled everyone from sleep, their hearts racing at the sound of it. Everyone climbed out of bed, threw on their night coats, and then rushed up to see what had happened. What they found, according to the legend, was the young captain, dead on the floor of his room, a victim of his own pistol.
In 1907, author Charles Harper wrote about the house in a book, and it was there that he declared it to be “the very picture of misery”. After the events that were said to have taken place there, it’s easy to wonder if the misery was in the structure or the lives who lived there. Either way, the stories we’ve heard so far shed a bright light on one more tale that Harper added to the legend. According to him, the next family to own the house moved in fully aware of the tragedies of the past. The owner was an older gentleman, who was said to be practical and not prone to stories of the supernatural. Still, he understood the power of suggestion a creepy old house with a dark past might have over him, so he set some rules for everyone to follow. After settling in with his family, he told them all that he would ring his bell to tell them if he ever truly needed help. If it was a moment of fright, he would only ring it once, which they were all instructed to ignore, but if matters were more pressing and he truly needed help, he would ring it twice, a signal that they were to immediately come to his room.
Everyone went to bed at the end of the evening, and while the night began peacefully, the quiet was broken around midnight by the loud chime of the old man’s bell, not once, but twice, which sent everyone rushing to see what might be the matter. What they found, though, weren’t answers. The old man was writhing in his bed, his face twisted by panic and fear. Just like the housemaid all those years before, he too couldn’t answer the questions that the others around him asked. He could only mutter and shake with horror at something no one else could see. After doing their best to help him, they calmed him enough to let him sleep, and everyone wandered back to their own rooms. They left his bell on the table beside his bed, hoping that he would remember how to use it if he needed them, but the remainder of the night was one, long stretch of unbroken silence. In the morning, they discovered why. After visiting the old man’s bedroom to check on him, one of his family members gently pushed the door open and peered inside. The shape in the bed was unmoving, and so they approached to wake him and see how he felt. But like those in the house before him, he too had passed away. A random coincidence of natural causes, or a demonstration of the power of fear?
There’s a lot about London that seems to echo the atmosphere of the house at 50 Berkeley Square. It’s a city painted in shadows, but it’s unclear if that darkness was always there, or if we imported it over the centuries. What’s clear is that almost from the start, tragedy and suffering has been a resident of this ancient city. Right back to the invasion of Boudica, nearly 2000 years ago, and up to its most modern challenges, the city of London has had to suffer through quite a bit, and that has a way of leaving a mark. Over the centuries, though, the city has always found ways to move on. New layers are added all the time, building the present on top of the past and slowly burying one dark moment beneath another – which is probably why London is one of those places where new construction always seems to bump into ancient things. If you dig deep enough, you’re guaranteed to find something. And look – London is a massive city, and while I did my best to cover some of its larger and more powerful stories, there are hundreds more that I had to leave untouched. Honestly, if you want to visit a haunted location in the city, just visit a local pub, like the Ten Bells, or the Flask, or the Spaniard Inn. If the stories are true, you’ll find a lot more than a pint of ale waiting for you inside.
But if there’s one mark on the pages of London’s history that is bigger than most, it’s hard to deny the power of the plague. If you remember, when the wave of disease washed over the city in 1665, it took two years to run its course, and in the process, it claimed the lives of nearly 100,000 people, and that was a lot of tragedy to deal with – on the personal and the public level. The biggest problem seemed to be what to do with all those corpses. We’ve all seen films like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and can all remember lines like “bring out your dead”, and from what we can tell, that’s pretty close to how it actually would have been, a steady, daily flow of bodies out of the city, away from the places where people lived in the hope that it would stop the spread of the disease. And most of the bodies were carried outside the city limits. One such burial location was started by the Earl of Craven, who purchased a parcel of land west of the city for disposal of plague victims, and every night, for months on end, carts filled with rotting corpses were wheeled out onto his land and then dumped into the pits there. Over time, the place became known as the “Pest House Field,” and later it was named Gelding Close, but to be honest, few people actually went there. They were too afraid of what might happen if they got too close to the body of a plague victim or, heaven forbid, accidentally touch one. So, the burial plot, like so many others around the city, became a sort of no man’s land.
After years of waiting, the owners of the land eventually made the decision to use the property for development. London was growing, and there would always be a need for a new neighbourhood to settle in, so it was sold in pieces and developed into homes for the wealthy and elite to move away from the centre of the city. Gelding Close eventually became known as Golden Square, and today it’s a prominent feature in the SoHo area of London. But even though the name has changed and the landscape around it has been transformed, the past is still there, lingering in the shadows of modern life. In fact, more than a few visitors to the park and buildings that surround it have bumped into the past in a very real way. A few have seen the figures of people dressed in old-fashioned clothing slipping through the square at night, while most have caught the sound of wailing, as if someone were enduring horrible pain and suffering. But it’s not the specific things people have heard over the years that are the most terrifying aspect to these stories. No, it’s where they all claim the voices have come from. The sounds, they say, seem to emanate from right beneath their feet.
A city as old and historic as London is guaranteed to have a library of mysterious shadows and otherworldly experiences and I hope today’s tour has been a satisfying dip into that enormous pond, but I’m not done just yet. There’s one more legend from the city that I absolutely love, and if you stick around through the sponsor break, I plan to tell you all about it.
[Sponsor break from the Great Courses Plus, Squarespace and Fracture]
When you think of London, it’s easy to think of money. As far back as the Roman period of the city, there has been an overt focus on the financial industry. In about 240AD, for example, the Romans constructed a mithraeum, a temple devoted to the god Mithras. Some of the most common members of the cult of Mithras were merchants, traders, customs officials and politicians, all professions that revolved around the flow of money. But it didn’t end with the Romans. As the centuries ticked by, the people of London found new and better ways to manage money and build the economy. In the year 1100, King Henry I instituted a new system of currency that even the most illiterate and uneducated citizens of his kingdom could understand: the tally stick. It was essentially a polished wooden rod that had nicks carved into it to denote its value, and it was then split down the middle. The king kept one half, while the other was put into circulation in places like the city markets, and that’s where the system really shined. If anyone tried to change the value of the public half by adding another nick, they just needed to be compared to the other half kept safe by the crown.
But at the end of the 17th century, one of the biggest changes to the financial world of London was born: The Bank of England. It was created in 1694 to solve a tricky financial problem the government of England faced. They needed to build a massive navy to defend themselves but lacked the funds to do it. So, an elaborate system of lending and currency came to the rescue. A century later, The Bank of England was simply a way of life for the people of London. It had all the prestige and power that you might expect from a government-backed bank and had established a reputation for itself that has carried into the 21st century.
But I don’t want to give you a tour of the bank’s full history, I just want to tell you about one of their employees, a man named Philip Whitehead. Whitehead worked in the cashier’s office of The Bank of England in 1811. Everyone around him viewed him as a pillar of the establishment, a hard-working, respectable man who was charming and delightful with staff and customers alike. Except that’s not all he was. Philip was also a criminal. It turns out he had been forging bank documents for months, cheating the bank out of a slow trickle of money, and at some point in 1911, his misdeeds were discovered, and he was quickly arrested and sent off to prison. A few months later, in early 1812, Philip Whitehead hanged for his crimes, and the bank moved on.
Several weeks after Philip’s hanging, though, a woman came into the bank asking for him. She said her name was Sarah, but when she asked to speak with Philip Whitehead, she was simply told that he was out of the office on a business errand. The woman left disappointed but promised to be back at another time. The next time that she returned, he not only told them that her name was Sarah, but that she was Philip’s sister. She told them of how she had lost touch with her brother many months earlier, and that she had been desperate to find a way to reach him, and at some point, her story must have plucked at the heartstrings of just the right bank employee, because one of the men took her aside and told her the truth. Her brother was dead. It wouldn’t be Sarah’s last visit to the bank, though. The next time she returned, she was dressed all in black, with a black veil that covered her face.
She stepped into the lobby of the bank and asked to see her brother. Taking pity on the poor woman, and official at the bank pulled her aside, apologised for keeping his imprisonment and execution a secret, and offered a small settlement. It was a pay-off, of course, designed to keep her from disturbing the other customers, but I’m sure he sold it to her more as a salve for her aching heart. Either way, she accepted the money and then left. But she returned a few days later. Over and over again, Sarah Whitehead visited the bank, each time dressed in that black gown and veil. At first, her voice was nothing more than a whisper, but with each new visit her question became louder and more aggressive – “Where is my brother?” she continued to ask. Each of those visits ended with another small payment from the bank, but they weren’t a charity house, and eventually decided that enough was enough.
Pulling her aside one day, they handed her a massive settlement and told her never to return, and to her credit, Sarah Whitehead listened. She never again set foot inside the bank, although it’s said that she also never wore anything else but that black gown and dark veil. We don’t know how long Sarah lived after that – sometimes grief has a way of speeding up a person’s decline, while other times it seems to give them a reason to go on. But decades later, Sarah passed away, having spent the remainder of her life in a constant state of mourning for her dead brother. Legend says that the churchyard she chose for her burial was the one right next door to the bank. Maybe she wanted to keep an eye on them from the other world, or perhaps it just happened to be where she attended church. I like to think that it was the former, and that those that still worked at the bank and knew her story were aware of where she was buried. It’s very poetic, whether or not it was actually true.
But her story doesn’t end there, of course. In the years following Sarah Whitehead’s death, employees inside the bank began to report seeing strange things. Oftentimes it was nothing more than a movement, just out of their field of vision, caught in the corner of their eye but never there when they turned their head. Other times, it was the fleeting vision of something black and shadowy. Many who have worked in the bank claim that certain areas give them a feeling of hopelessness and despair, and on rare occasions some claim that a mysterious shape has even materialised right before their eyes. All of them have described it in the same way, too, giving the old stories new life as the decades have passed by. They say the shape is that of a woman. Each time she appears, her pale skin is framed by a dress as black as coal, the veil that had once covered her face pulled back to revealed twisted lips, red cheeks and eyes that seem to glow like fire. But it’s the words she speaks that frighten people the most. After locking eyes with them and washing them in a wave of terror, the women in black repeats the same words she had grown so accustomed to in life. “Where,” she asks them, “is my brother?”

Chapter 3 - Stoppable Family Vacation
Chapter 3 - Stoppable Vacation Curse - Part II
"Kim, girl, don't you remember the last time you had a vacation with the hubs?" Monique said before pulling out her smartphone and scrolled down to the last family vacation the Stoppables had.
It read "MS Gulf Coast, May 2018."
"Ah...yes. The second worst family vacation we ever been on!" Kim groaned, recalling the memories of that vacation while hooking back up the undone strap of her overalls. "The one where we had to do a photoshoot for Club Banana for their summer swimwear AND the same weekend we had to take care of Mr. Barkin's prized 200-pound hog, Princess AND his cat, Lady Whiskerboots."
__________________________________________________________________________________ (May 4, 2018, Gulfport, Mississippi) The Stoppables were driving along in the 1996 Drudge Tangerine minivan in downtown Gulfport. It was in ugly avocado green and had fake wood paneling on the doors. Kim had known to call it the Stoppable-mobile.  The Tangerine's only damage was a bit of rust on the roof of the car and the lovebugs that perished on the bumper of the car. In that car, on the third row, were also seven bikinis of different designs that Kim was going to try out on the beaches of the Gulf Coast and that Ron was going to photograph for the CB website, courtesy of Monique. Princess was also belted in the third row. Lady Whiskerboots was also in the third row as well.   Kim was in a white shirt, baggy denim overalls, both straps hooked combo while Ron was in the 3 Wolves shirt and jeans combo. The windows, however, were all rolled down for a reason.
"Ah, KS, can you feel the warm breeze in the air, the roar in the ocean...." Ron said with a smile before his wife chirped in, holding her nose desperately while trying to drive.
"...the awful smell of that hog waste and the smell of cat litter?" Kim retorted. "I've been trying to hold my nose in for about 700 of the 1300 plus miles on this drive from her! And I've also had it up to here with the lovebugs being splattered against the bumper!"
It showed that the front bumper of the car was covered in the remains of lovebugs splattered at a high speed.
"Princess is a him, Kim." Ron countered on the pig's gender, "Don't ask why Barkin named him that way. Although I can see why Lady Whiskerboots is a she. She's quite feisty like yourself!!"
"Whatever..." Kim muttered, "It's bad enough that we get Barkin's pet duty while HE'S on vacation in Hawaii, but why did it have to be the same weekend as the CB Annual Swimsuit Extravaganza that Monique is going to hold tonight? And when did Princess do his business?"
"Two hours ago. And can you cut...." came Ron's reply. Princess snorted and Ron could hear a rumble in her stomach.
"Kim, she has to go again!" Ron said.
"Ron, I am NOT going to get out of this vehicle!" Kim retorted, "We have to make it in time for the CB Summer Gala tonight, for Martin Smarty is going to be there!"
Princess got up from his position and came up to the front seat.
"The piggy is smelly!" Alexa complained from her car seat. "And the cat is all fluffy."
"I don't wanna get my clothes muddy!" Justin agreed with her sister.
"Kim?! That's no way to talk to a pig like that, isn't that right, Princess?" Ron exclaimed as he petted Princess on his head. Princess squealed with delight and rubbed Ron's face.
"See? Even though he's technically Barkin's, he's like family to me! We raced him with Rufus back at the Middleton Smarty-Mart a couple years ago." Ron said, reflecting on the bonding experience they had before hearing Rufus chittering in protest over that remark.
"Ooops....I mean, an extended family member, but Rufus is the most important one that I have!" Ron corrected himself.
Rufus smiled and hugged his owner.
Kim groaned. "Just as soon as we get done with the photo-shoot for Club Banana this evening, we'll celebrate on the beach on Saturday and Sunday and then drive back for Monday and Tuesday!" Lady Whiskerboots, meanwhile, moved from her position on the third row onto the bikinis.
Ron replied, "Sounds like a good plan to me!"
Then they noticed, along the corner of Highway 49 and 14th St., a line of protesters to either side of the street. "Oh no...." Kim groaned. "Not these people again!!"
"Why do they have to follow us everywhere we go?" Ron whined.
They numbered about 25 even on both sides of the street, roped off by police. As it turned out, the left side of the street were filled with protestors for the KP live-action movie and the right side of the street were protestors against it. Police barricaded the protestors on both sides to prevent a riot.
Signs on the pro-LAM said "She's 17, just deal with it!" "Don't over-sexualize her!" and "She is NOT working for a secret agency" while the anti-LAM side had signs that said "She is NOT our Kim Possible! Why can't they choose someone else?!", "She has to work for a secret agency! It's what the show stated from the beginning!" and "She has to be a 26-year old actress to play the role of a 14-year old girl!"
"Kim, let's get out of here!" Ron exclaimed.
"I'm right behind ya, Ron!" Kim yelled, slamming on the gas and avoiding the protesters. They got onto US 90 and headed east.
"Ron, can you check the bikinis to make sure they're all right?" Kim asked. Ron turned his head and saw that the bikinis were over Lady Whiskerboots claws. She began to immediately shred into them but Kim couldn't see the damage because she was focused on the road.
in the box slid on over to Princess. He also placed his buttocks over them.
"Uh...KS? You may wanna stop now." Ron said, knowing what was going to happen to the pig. "Princess can't keep it any longer."
"Ron?! Can Princess hold it in for 20 minutes?" Kim asked, still not looking behind and concentrating on the road.
"Actutally...."
Kim slammed on the braked at a nearby beach parking lot and looked behind. Her jaw dropped at what Lady Whiskerboots did to the bikinis.
"OH NO!!! LADY WHISKERBOOTS SHREDDED THE BIKINIS!!! MARTIN SMARTY IS GOING TO KILL US!!!!"
And then she looked at what Princess was going to do. Princess raised his buttocks in the air over the bikinis.
"DON'T DO IT, PRINCESS!!!!"
But it was too late.
"NNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" ______________________________________________________________________________ (back to the present day)
"Had it not been for Ron's call to Mr. Smarty, we wold've had to pay $4,000 in damages to those bikinis, and the Stoppable-mobile still reeks of hog waste." Kim sighed.
"Mmm...hmm." Monique muttered, "Thankfully, no bikinis smelled of pig manure in the gala."
"That's always the thing. It's either Ron or me that has managed to at least salvage those vacations." Kim said.
Ron knocked on the door and asked, "Hey, everyone. And hey, KS! I was wondering where ya went to after dinner. Can I come in?"
"Sure you can, Ron!" she smiled, opening the door for her husband.
Ron came in alongside with Rufus also saw Tara, the Halls and Rentons.
"What's going on here?" he questioned.
"It's the ish of the family vacation, Ron." Kim replied.
Ron sighed, "Yeah, I kinda feared that part was going to come up."
Rufus shuddered at that..."Vacation!"
"You do?" Kim asked.
"Yeah, I saw it from the look of your eyes at the dinner table, Kim." Ron said, reading his wife like a book. "It's the Stoppable Vacation Curse, isn't it."
"Yes." Kim admitted.
"Yeah...." Ron replied, scratching his back, "...it's always been an issue for me even before we said our 'I dos'."
"I'm gonna use the little girls room for a bit." Kim whispered to her husband, pointing to her overalls bib, "The bib's really irritating my skin."
"Okay, hon!" Ron smiled, kissing Kim on the lips before she headed to the bathroom.

How to Get Rid of Stomach Fat – Secrets For the Regular Person – Part 2 of a 4 Part Weekly Series
Part 2 – Changing the Way You Eat and the Foods to Avoid to Get Rid Of Stomach Fat
Changing the Way You Eat
Back in Part 1 of my 4 part series I gave an overview of Stomach Fat, Why We Have It, and What We Have to do to Get Rid of Stomach Fat. In Part 2 of this series I will shift the focus to nutrition and how changing the way you eat will help you get rid of stomach fat, lose weight, and lower body fat.
According to who you talk to, nutrition probably accounts for 70-90% of a lifestyle change designed to lose weight. That’s right; I said lifestyle change, not diet. Diets have let us down for years, starting with how the USDA designed the food pyramids. The USDA let us down back in the early 80’s. They changed the food pyramid to focus on more carbohydrates and less fat. The USDA drove us to start eating more carbs by making the base of the pyramid (the biggest portion of the suggested diet) heavy in starches, grains, and other carbs. They didn’t educate the average American on the dangers of a diet rich in refined carbohydrates like regular pasta, white bread, and baked potatoes. This was a great disservice to the American public, based on what we know now.
The other thing that has really hindered us is all of the diets out there, especially low fat diets. The tendency is for us to follow a diet for a few weeks, or months, lose some weight, and then go back to unhealthy habits and gain all the weight back, or even more than what we lost. How is anyone ever going to stick to a lifestyle like that and keep themselves at a health weight?
So what is the solution? The easiest solution is to make a resolution to ourselves to eat healthy (90% of the time) for the rest of our lives. In my next section I am going to outline an easy eating plan to help do just that. But before I do that, let’s do some math.
Counting Calories
Counting calories on a daily basis isn’t necessarily part of my plan to get rid of stomach fat, but it is a good idea to have a basic understanding of daily caloric needs so we can put some kind of a plan in place, so let’s do it. There are many different formulas out there and you can do your own research to find one that works for you, but here is a simple formula to determine your basic daily caloric needs to work from:
* You need to know that 3500 calories = 1 pound
Let’s use an example of a woman that weighs 160 lbs. and whose goal weight is 130 lbs.
Multiply your goal weight by 10: 130×10 = 1300
Add 20 percent if you are sedentary (sit at a desk, etc.), add 50 percent if you are moderately active (outside sales, walk up and down stairs, etc.), and add 70 percent if you are active all day. For our example our woman is sedentary so, 1300 x 1.20 = 1560
Add the number of calories you burn during your workouts. For our example, our woman is not doing any exercise, so any additional calories burned during exercise is a bonus. We’ll cover calories burned during exercise in Part 3 of the 4 Part Series on How to Get Rid of Stomach Fat for the Regular Person.
Reduce this total by 15 percent for steady weight loss. So in our example, our woman needs about 1560 to maintain her weight, and since she doesn’t exercise, she needs to eat about 1326 calories a day for steady weight loss. If you are more active and exercising, then you need to eat more calories or your bodies metabolism will slow down too much.
Now one of the biggest fears we have in trying to lose weight is being in a constant state of hunger because we feel we have to starve ourselves. That is just not a healthy way to live and it isn’t part of this plan. Another part of our plan to change the way you eat is to eat smaller portions more often. In fact, we need to eat 4-6 times a day. I prefer 6 times a day, but it all depends on your goals and your lifestyle.
So in our example, our woman should try to eat 4-5 times a day dividing 1326 calories among those meals, so that would be approximately 330 calories a meal. It could be broken down like this:
Breakfast – 400 calories Snack – 100-200 calories Lunch – 300 calories Afternoon Snack – 100-200 calories Dinner – 400 calories
In this example we would eat 1300-1500 calories and would eat 5 times a day. I will go over what we should eat later in the article. Now let’s look at what we shouldn’t eat so we can finally get rid of stomach fat.
Another easy calculation is to figure out how many calories you are eating on a daily basis with a diet log and then subtract 15%. You have to be true to yourself and count every single thing that goes in your mouth for 3 or 4 days (a week is optimal).
Foods to Avoid
I’ll be any one of you reading this could help me write this section. We all know what foods we should not be eating. We should not eat foods high in sugar. We should not eat foods high in saturated fat. We should not eat fast food. We should avoid liquid calories. We know this. We still do it. You know what? It’s OK. Just do it in moderation. I am not going to tell you to cut these foods out of your diet completely, but to get rid of stomach fat; you must eat these types of foods and drinks in moderation. If you are at a birthday party with your kids, go ahead and have some cake, with the key word being “some”. Don’t scarf down 2 pieces; instead have half of 1 piece or just a bite or two. You’ll satisfy your sweet tooth and save a ton of calories over time. If you are out to eat, go ahead and have a French fry or two, or a slice of pizza. Just don’t over do it, and limit these little “cheats” to once a week. More on that later too.
So let’s address these foods and drinks to avoid in a little more detail.
Sugar – let me say this, sugar is the enemy. Food or drink high in sugar will sabotage your healthy eating plan faster than anything else. Look at your food labels and try to stay away from anything over 10 grams of sugar per serving.
High Fructose Corn Syrup- another ingredient that will kill your chances of losing weight. Your body doesn’t even recognize the calories and in fact your body shuts off its natural appetite control switches, so you can eat and eat far more than what your body would be able to handle. In fact, HFCS is sort of like setting up a direct line into your stomach to produce fat. HFCS is in cereal, ketchup, soda, flavored waters, marinades, etc. I’ve even seen it as the first or second ingredient on supposedly healthy WHOLE WHEAT BREAD! It’s everywhere. Avoid it all costs. If it is listed as one of the first 4 or 5 ingredients on the label, think twice about eating or drinking that item.
Trans Fats and Saturated Fats- thankfully the government finally cracked down on the food companies to remove trans fat and put it in the labeling. They are tough to digest and increase the amount of bad cholesterol in your blood. Since trans fat is synthetic and doesn’t exist naturally, your body has a tough time processing it. It not only raises bad cholesterol (LDL), but it lowers good cholesterol (HDL). This is awful. Check labels for these words and avoid at all costs: hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated. The higher on the label, the more they have. Here some common foods with hidden trans fat: soups, biscuits, fries, Oreos, spreads, frozen foods (chicken pot pie and waffles), most fast food, and movie popcorn. Keep away from these foods at all costs. Saturated fat is also bad for your heart and cholesterol levels. Saturated fat shows up in fatty cuts of red meat and in whole-milk dairy products. Saturated fat basically goes right from your stomach, to your stomach. How do you like that? It doesn’t have far to go at all to make you fat, so eat fatty meats sparingly and drink low fat or fat free milk. We’ll talk about good fats when I discuss my easy to remember nutrition plan below.
Sugar Filled Drinks- if we really want to drop pounds and shed calories in a hurry, we need to get rid of sugary drinks. Sodas, Fruit Juices, Flavored Teas, Flavored Milk, Flavored Coffees, and Smoothies from a store. Some of us get up to 25% of our daily calorie intake from sugary drinks without even processing this in our mind as bad for us. Did you know that a can of Sunkist Orange Soda has 190 calories and 52 grams of sugar per 12 oz. can? Did you know that a Jamba Juice Peanut Butter Moo’d Power Smoothie has 1170 calories and 169 grams of sugar? These numbers are shocking. Imagine our woman in the example above is trying to lose weight by eating around 1300-1500 calories a day and she drinks a Jamba Juice Power Smoothie thinking the “power” in the title is healthy. She just drank almost her entire day’s worth of calories in 10 minutes! Let’s say we are drinking a coffee loaded with cream and sugar, an 8 oz. glass of OJ in morning, a couple of regular sodas a day, and maybe a beer or two for dinner, then guess what, that is about 500-600 liquid calories a day. Just by switching to water or mineral water, we would lose a pound a week without changing anything else. Think about that for a moment. Just by switching to water, sugar less green tea or diet soda, we could lose a pound a week. Pretty incredible.
High Glycemic Foods- these are starchy foods like regular potatoes, white rice, regular pasta, pretzels, plain bagels, white bread, or any other food made with enriched flour. These foods are almost like eating sugar because they are converting almost directly into fat (guess what the USDA had us eating all those years at the bottom of the food pyramid. No wonder we got fat!)
You can do some research on the internet at sites like calorieking.com to learn how many calories your favorite foods have. Remember, I am not going to recommend counting calories on a daily basis, but you should really get an idea of how much sugar, fat, and calories your favorite foods and drinks have. We have covered the bad stuff, so now let’s move onto to my easy to remember and easy to follow eating plan. Part 3 of my series, How to Get Rid of Stomach Fat: Secrets for the Regular Person will cover the foods you must eat to get rid of stomach fat. See my resource box for more details.

"My car got hit in the middle of the night. I don't have insurance but the person at fault does.?
I woke up yesterday to find my car hit and another car, with temp tags, abandoned up the road (it had a lot of damage to the front of it, so it was obviously the one that hit mine.) Today the officer who came yesterday called and had found the person at fault and gave me all of their information. I don't have insurance currently, and my car will cost a few $100 to repair, so what can I do with this info?

Is it possible for me to insure myself to drive my sister's car, and to add her as a named driver? Or do I have to own the car. Car insurance question.?
OK, so I got my car insurance renewal to start on 16 May, and it went up from 40 a month to 60, for no gosh darned reason. Grrr. I know that the insurance has gone up a lot, and I think they blame the compensation claims for this, but up a THIRD! Jeeeeeez! Last year, it went up from 35 a month to 50 and I had a whinge down the phone at them, and they reduced it to 40 by changing the recovery a bit (I don't get help now unless I am more than a mile from home; but the chances are I would be when I broke down anyway, and even if I was half a mile away, I could walk back!) so I agreed to change that. So I rang them today and they said they can lower it a fiver because I am a 'loyal' customer, (so down to 55 a month.) Big deal! I am nearly 40, I passed my test 20 years ago, and I have been with them 10 years and NEVER made a claim, and yet they bump my premium by a third! I am like It's a LOT of dosh. Does this seem like a ludicrous leap to you? Has yours gone up a lot too? Does this sound like a high amount to pay? (55 to 60 a month.) Or reasonable for a 38 year old woman? It does include recovery in this quote, and the recovery is about 130. But 2 years ago, I was paying 35, and this year they are asking for 60 a month! I do like this insurance company and have my home insurance and pet insurance with them too, and don't want to leave, but a jump of a third!""

I was turning left from a stop sign and hit into another car (checked both ways, had some parked cars blocking view but I inched forward to check before driving.) My car only has minor scrapes, his car has a broken headlight and some bumper damage. However, he told me at the time he has no insurance and wanted me to just give him cash on the street. I told him no, I would not pay anything unless we called the police which he did not want to do since he has no insurance. I am fully insured. We ended up both just leaving and I have his license plate number, name, and phone number. He has my license plate number only. Without insurance, can he try to get any money from me? Just wondering if anything should be expected of this situation...""
Price range for what I would be paying for car insurance by myself?
I am about to turn 19 and im not on good terms with my father so I am deciding get on my own car insurance plan. I know it will be expensive but im trying to make things easier for myself by trying to get a Pontiac grand am between the years of 2000-2005. I know that since its an older car, it will cost less. Plus, I should start working by the middle of May and work until the end of the summer so I want to just pay the car off instead of having car payments, hopefully that helps lower the cost too. Who thinks GEICO is a great insurance company?

Ok, I am trying to get some new auto insurance quotes from other companies. My problem is I have a few moving violations. One speeding ticket and one ticket for running a stop sign. I have no comprehensive or collision coverage. I can not afford those. But liability wise, am I good or would it be OK to buy less or should I buy more auto insurance? How can I put my girlfriend (8 1/2 years and still going strong) on my health/dental insurance?
Hi guys, so I have asked my job and it seems the only way I can add her to my health/dental insurance is if 1) we are married or 2) if i provide proof of living with her for a certain amount of years. There has to be some loophole because I really think it is ridiculous that we have been to together since we were 16 and I cant add her or help her in such a way. There is no possible way, in timeline, for us to qualify for such rules. 16-18 years old (in high school and lived with parents), 18-23 years old (Attended separate universities and lived in different cities), 23- 24 1/2 years old, (both living with parents back home, we alternate and stay at each others place, so have no set home or bills in our name, such as direct tv, electricity, internet, you name it. we are blessed with awesome parents) and yes we have though about just getting married, but no way... we are waiting until we are established and can fend for ourselves to make a decision like that, but yes we do want to get married some day, but not over screwing the government or other reasons. Also we live in california if that helps, since i know every state varies, thank s guys!! ^_^""

Just this Monday I found out I was pregnant. Two Clear Blue PREGNANT's, and I was bawling in the Target bathroom. ""In Texas, does the responsible insurance company have to pay for the storage fees for our totaled car?""
I was just recently involved in an accident and the insurance company that is responsible to pay for the damages is saying that I need to move my car from storage, because they do not have to pay for the car to remain in storage. Since I live in an apartment complex the car would have to be moved twenty minutes away, which is going to cost quite a bit and then we would have to move it again to an auto body shop back to the area I live in. So I called the place where it was stored to get a quote on how much it would cost to move it and the guy said that our car looks to be totaled and that for them to tow it I would have to pay out of pocket and I will never see that money again. Also, he said, in Texas, it is state law for the insurance company to pay storage and towing fees, he said the insurance is just saying that to get us to move it so they don't have to pay those extra fees. I don't know who to believe and I couldn't find anything online about it.""

Why are republicans fighting the health insurance mandate and not fighting the car insurance mandate?
If you have to buy car insurance and get penalized for driving without car insurance, whats the difference here? Its as much a privilege to drive as it is to receive healthcare. However no one thinks its an over reach of government to mandate car insurance. When you get in a car accident with an uninsured driver you have to pay for your own damage, so how different is it then when americans use the public healthcare system, the government has to use TAX DOLLARS to pay for their health care. Also why is it being categorized as a Government Takeover of Healthcare ? If I buy health insurance wouldnt it be more like a Privatization of Healthcare seeing that instead of having vast amounts of tax dollars going into the system, the health system would now be funded by the insurance companies by paying out claims.""

Insurance settlement following motorcycle accident - GA?
The accident was ruled the other driver's fault. I had three pelvic fractures, dislocated tailbone, and fractured elbow. My health ins isn't paying, but the med bills have been reduced to the negotiated rate that my ins would normally pay. So my TOTAL OWED is about 2/3's of the initial total. Since pain & suffering is based on med bills times a multiplier, which amount will the ins co use? The larger total or the negotiated total? An attorney told me that this hospital is notorious for requesting the rest of the owed amount after the settlement has been reached, so obviously, I want the most money that I can get (and 13 weeks missed work!) Thanks""

Health insurance?
Dear friends, I was an international student in the past spring semester and my health insurance is still valid until the end of this summer. Thankfully I have not used my insurance at all and I was wondering if you my friends could give me any smart ideas on how I may be able to get the most out of my health insurance before it expires? I assume there would be no refund to me from the insurance company even if I have not had a single claim on it. I paid almost 500$ for it and that kinda hurts to see it is going to expire soon and you have not benefited from it at all! Hope you understand and thank you very much in advance for your smart ideas and any advice or information you could give, warm regards, Rojin""

General car insurance question(s)?
Which will cost more in car insurance, generally: a passenger sedan (maybe a 1999 Honda Civic) or a pickup truck (1995 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, perhaps)? Also, if I have two trucks, both exactly the same, only, one has 2-wheel drive and one has 4-wheel drive, which will cost more in insurance? If one will infact cost more, will the difference be significant enough to matter? I live in Colorado. 4-wheel drive is desirable with the snow and ice, but if it will cost significantly more in insurance, I can't justify it.""
Male vs. female car insurance?
So as a 16 year old male driver, I'm aware that car insurance rates for me are significantly higher than a same age female driver, just because of my gender. How are insurance companies able to do this, no matter how many statistics they have saying we crash more, speed more often, ect...? This is discrimination vs. my gender, and for all they know I could drive like a granny. Now consider this: if statistics showed that blacks were twice as likely to crash than whites, could insurance companies charge more? No way! The NAACP would be all over them. That would be unfair to the black drivers that may drive safe. I just dont get why I am charged way more than what a girl gets charged, even though I am a very safe driver.""

Why can't health insurance do new methods to cut cost?
Just thinking, how about use health care at another country for cut cost? Let say you live in USA, need heart sugery, do it at India to save insurance money. So health care become more affordable, yet insurance company can make more profit. You maybe say people don't like travel, well if you want more coverage with lower price, you got no choice. Or pay full price for insurance if prefer use America hospital. I understand some situation can't because emergency and need treatment in less than hour so can use local hospital. I am talking about if need medcial attention in less than 24 hours, can be done, insurance can arrange travel, and treatment at half way around the earth. Example: cost 100,000 dollars in USA, cost 7,000 at India for same treatment. Save: 93,000 dollars for all of us.""

Progressive auto insurance problem !?
I need an opinion on what should i do in this case. 3 weeks ago , as I was driving home , on the freeway , from the truck in front of me fell big peace of ice and hit my car from underneath. Less than 1 minute later i noticed blue smoke behind , luckily there was and exit with gas station right there. By the time i pulled up to the gas station car was barely moving. After staying parked for 20 min , it leaked oil and tranny fluid . I called towing , had them pick the car up , called progressive made the claim. All of that happened in WI near Milwaukee , before i used to leave in Chicago , so I never dealt with progressive from WI. After couple days adjuster came out and gave shop 1100$ to start the repairs , shop diagnosed everything and came to a conclusion that its the transmission leaking because of the damage inside. Adjuster was extremely slow to give shop any kind of approvals to do anything , So after 3 weeks they finally allowed them to take transmission apart , another adjuster came out took pictures , then shop owner want around , called me and said that he will call me next day. Next day shop owner calls me asking if I heard anything from progressive ? I call that guy back , but he went on vacation. Call my first adjuster , she says that the guy who went on vacation concluded that it wasn't related to impact , so they wont pay for anything and I owe 500 for taking down transmission. I called shop owner right away asking if its possible , not being related to impact , he says of course not , otherwise your car wouldn't break after impact. He also said some technical explanation what caused it to break , i just don't know what. he also said that no one ever called him and asked him what was the cause if that. I dealt with progressive in Chicago twice , when i lived there , and i had greatest experience ever , but it seems that in Milwaukee , they are playing games , making me pay , and not taking responsibilities. I figured somebody might know what should I do in this case , I just want them to do what they should do , especially when Im paying 200$ a month.""

I have title to my exes car and pay their insurance. How do I get out of it?
Me and my girl broke up a year and a half ago. She's a real piece of work. We lived together for 3 years and had everything is each others names. Utility bills, cell phone bills etc. She never paid any of her bills on time and it destroyed her credit. I signed for a car for her because she's had multiple DUI's and didn't have the credit to get her own. She made the payments on it and I never put any money down. The car title is in my name and she has paid it off. She can't get insurance because of the DUI's. I just want to be done with it so I don't have to deal with her anymore but she wants me to hold off until she finished her DUI classes to get a reasonable rate on insurance. She's been telling me the same thing for a year plus. I'm not even sure if she's taken or taking these classes yet or not. I asked her about it the other day and she never responded to me. I had left her a voicemail and she never called me back. This really pisses me off. So my question is if I sign the title and make her sign it as well do I have any more resposibility with the automobile? I just want to drop her from my insurance and give her the title. Is she wrecks or, god forbid, kills someone while driving am I liable for anything?""

Can I get insurance myself at 17?
I'm 16 right now and I have been diagnosed with major depressive. My mom lost her insurance in May last year and I haven't been to a doctor since. My symptoms are getting worse and I attempted suicide a couple months ago (refused to see a doctor afterwards because I didn't want social services to get involved). I have a family history with depression and mood disorders and my condition is only getting worse. I tried to get insurance all summer and fall last year, but I couldn't qualify for medi cal (I live in california) because of my age supposedly and my old doctor refused to sign off on minors consent. I'm wondering if things will be different by the time I turn 17? Will I be more likely to be accepted by then? Is there anything else I can do that won't get my mom arrested and me put into the foster care system? I feel like the social workers have a gun pointed to my back right now.. if I say much more about my problems to them they'll take me, and my little brother. Also CPS is not an option I want nothing to do with them or foster care. I would rather continue on and die in my condition than go to the foster home in my area, I've met kids stuck in that system and continuing on without medical care seems better than living in that hell hole.
