I was today years old when I learned that when you type “otp: true” in AO3 search results it filters out fics with additional ships, leaving only the fics where your otp is the main ship

Some tips for using a few words to describe voices:

1. Tone Words: Use tone words to convey the emotional quality of a voice. For example, you can describe a voice as "melodic," "soothing," "sharp," "gentle," or "commanding" to give readers a sense of the tone.

2. Pitch and Range: Mention the pitch and range of the voice. Is it "deep," "high-pitched," "raspy," or "full-bodied"? This can provide insight into the character's age, gender, or emotional state.

3. Accent and Diction: Describe the character's accent or diction briefly to give a sense of their background or cultural influences. For instance, "British-accented," "Southern drawl," or "formal."

4. Volume: Mention the volume of the voice, whether it's "whispering," "booming," "murmuring," or "hushed."

5. Quality: Use terms like "velvet," "silken," "gravelly," "honeyed," or "crisp" to convey the texture or quality of the voice.

6. Rate of Speech: Describe how fast or slow the character speaks, using words like "rapid," "slurred," "measured," or "rambling."

7. Mood or Emotion: Indicate the mood or emotion carried by the voice. For example, a "quivering" voice may convey fear or anxiety, while a "warm" voice may express comfort and reassurance.

8. Resonance: Describe the resonance of the voice, such as "echoing," "nasal," "booming," or "tinny."

Reminders for new ao3 users (in no particular order):

- filter your searches like you would on a library website or in an online catalogue

- don’t post placeholders, fic searches, or recommendations as fics. DON’T! It’s against ao3 TOS

- there is no algorithm. ao3 sorts by date posted/updated unless you filter with specific search criteria

- ao3 is a non profit. that means it doesn’t sell ads to make money — it only survives on donations. this is why it can show you so many fics without ever flashing an ad or pop up at you!

- report fics that break TOS when you see them (I.e., placeholder fics, searches) to help other users navigate better

- the tag “dead dove, do not eat” doesn’t equate to gore/awfulness automatically. it is a complementary tag that enhances current tags. E.g., if the fic is tagged “gore” and “dead dove, do not eat” the author really wants you to mind the gore tag

- most fandoms have a variation of “no beta, we die like (x character)” and they all link back to the “No beta” tag

- publishing a new fic sometimes means it won’t show up in the fandom/pairing tag for a few minutes

- subscribers receive update emails at different times, depending on when you update/publish your fic. there’s no good way to predict when an e-mail will be sent — it can be in 30 seconds, or two hours later

- some fics are restricted by authors to those with ao3 accounts only. if you see a blue lock in the upper right corner, that fic is only visible to logged in ao3 users

- you can block commenters now! this didn’t use to be a thing

- updating a fic just to stay at the top of the pairing tag/fandom tag is a dick move. unless you’re legitimately editing or adding chapters, this just annoys readers and fellow authors, and people will skip over your fic

I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who has trouble remembering developmental milestones. I put these together, but can’t take credit for any of the photography. Hope someone finds them helpful!

Oh boy... I don't think I'm good enough at it to give my own advice, but I can tell you one that was given to me a couple of years ago.

"Let the scene breathe. You can always fit the action into one or two pictures. Or just a couple of minutes of timing. But if you want the audience to really get involved, you have to give them time. And space. Make more frames than minimally necessary. Show different sides of what's going on. Put emphasis on how the character's emotions change during the scene.

Then, the people who will read your story won't be able to take one quick glance and think "ah, it happened. Let's move on."

They will be forced to linger on the event and process it carefully. This will create enough of a delay for them to have impatience in their brains about what comes next. And a more genuine tension about future events, because this scene has hooked them."

Welcome to the Kaishin WIP Challenge!

Hello everyone, my name is Mac! I’m here to announce @dcmkkaishinevents’s next upcoming event: WIP Challenge 2023!

What is a WIP Challenge? It’s a challenge for artists and writers to finish something that’s been gathering dust in their files. The end goal is two-fold: more new content in the fandom and getting creators one step closer to finishing whatever unfinished project they choose! If you don’t have a WIP to work on, that’s okay! You’re invited to participate by starting and completing a new project!

What are the minimum requirements for the exchange? The only requirements are that you must sign up to participate, you must join the server, and you must check in at the midway check-in. There are no penalties for not finishing, but if you’re new to the server for this event you may be removed if you fail to complete the event.

What is the schedule? January 27 || sign-ups open February 5 || sign-ups close February 28 || mandatory check-in March 26-31 || posting period

Absolutley!

Era of Wolves is a Comic/Fic AU that takes place in a sort of fantasy/historical Japan. It is an Omegaverse, with Shinichi as an Omega human and Kaito as an Alpha werewolf/shapeshifter. It starts when they are both children.

Shinichi lives in a little village called Beika, loving to help his father with his carpenter work and solve mysteries around the community. Everyone thinks he will be an Alpha or at least a Beta. Imagine their surprise and disappointment when he turns out to be an Omega. Everyone now treats him different and basically forces him to act more like an Omega. Weaving, child care, learn from your mother, no heavy work for you, stop helping your father with a Betas carpenter work! and no mysteries for you mister! You can imagine he gets sick of it. So when he turns old enough, he leaves to a bigger town, finds a secret work as a carpenter and his "main work" as a weaver and moves to a little remote house in the mountains.

Kaito lives in a sort of nomadic village in the forests outside the human villages. They trade goods like skins, woodwork, tools and medicinal herbs, foods and other things with the humans, that have no clue they are werewolves. Kaito has some knowledge of medical herbs that he studied under the creepy but cool werewolf shaman, Akako. As a Werewolf there is a tradition that states that when a young one turns a certain age, they have to start finding a mate and have one by a certain age. But as Kaito is rebellious and very much dislikes ALL the potential mates his parents throw his way (Yes his father lives!) he starts to wander off in wolf form to a remote little abandoned house to get away from it all. Just chilling and sleeping in an undisturbed place.

You can see where this is going. 0w0

Shinichi fixes up the seemingly abandoned house and starts living in Kaito's little hidey hole, without his permission he might add! Kaito messes with him by scratching up his hard work in order to make him leave but Shinichi is a stubborn fool. Eventually Shinichi gets sick from working nonstop because of Kaito's shenanigans. and well, Kaito has a heart, so he can't leave him like that in the middle of the mountains all alone. So he turns human and stays with him until he gets better. And so love blossoms!

Quick lil note on the future in the story. Kaito's parents aren't entirely pleased that it is a human but can deal with it. And as you can imagine, as its an omegaverse.... Shin will have a pup, well not yet. Kaito hasn't told his mate about being a pupper, so things get a bit hairy when Kaito goes to hunt for his mate and pup to be and gets hurt like a fool. Shinichi is worried as he hasn't returned from the town in two days (which was a lie btw). In the meantime he rescues a random wolf he found in his "backyard/forest" and then sets out to find his wayward mate. Things happen and Kaito goes after him in wolf form. Stuff happens, Shinichi gets to know about his pupper mate and they live happily ever after. There is an omake with their child as well, but you know, I've rambled enough.

Asked by Cat and another person on discord, so here goes! 89 - CATastrophe strike, is an AU where Shinichi gets poisoned by Gin and Vodka as per usual. But instead of waking up as a child he wakes up as a cat! Running away from the officers, scared and disoriented he runs and runs until he collapses in an alleyway. He wakes up to overwhelming smells and sounds that gives him headaches. His body feels wired and everything is massive in comparison to himself. He eventually figures out he is a cat and is at a loss on what to do.

Enter Kaito! A born street cat that is quite a bit more intelligent than his peers. He shows the strange cat the ways of the street and being a cat.

In my notes for the future in the timeline. Shinichi somehow becomes human again after several months of being a cat. Kaito thinks himself abandoned, but Shinichi comes back for him and brings him home!
