Seance Tea Party creator Reimena Yee posted this lovely comic on Twitter: The God of Arepo, which is “about a farmer who befriends a nothing god.” It’s based on an open-source short story that ran on Tumblr, and she’s also offering an ebook edition.
A story of adventures and friendship and family, young and blind Safia must go to live with her strange and eccentric aunt Whimsy who is a retired adventurer that’s carrying a secret.
Reading this book was such a delight! All the characters were fun and had so many layers to them that you get to read about in off-hand backstories. It’s hard to have a favorite character when surrounded by so many but I loved Prof. Dr. Choi because you find out something interestingly funny about her relationship with Aunt Whimsy.
Another part of this book that I loved was that Safia was never told she couldn’t do something because of her disability. The author was very kind in all the ways they showed Safia’s disability, her tools, and her enthusiastic spirit to overcome challenges she’s faced. I hope to see more graphic novelists include disabled characters thoughtfully in their works.

Middle School Monday: Seance Tea Party by Reimena Yee
Lora Xi and her friends were growing apart, and she found herself spending more and more time alone. One day she decided to have a seance all by herself, and she was surprised to discover that a ghost named Alexa was haunting her house. Lora feels an instant connection with Alexa but she’s not sure why … until she discovers that Alexa used to be her imaginary friend!
Give this graphic novel to older kids and younger teens who are ready for a sweet, thoughtful, and emotional story about growing up, growing old, and growing apart.
While the charming setting, inventive paneling, and hypnotic carpet and wall patterns are worth giving credit to, I ultimately found myself turned off by the over all illustration and writing styles, which I found amateurish and uninspired.
