the fact that shakespeare was a playwright is sometimes so funny to me. just the concept of the "greatest writer of the English language" being a random 450-year-old entertainer, a 16th cent pop cultural sensation (thanks in large part to puns & dirty jokes & verbiage & a long-running appeal to commoners). and his work was made to be watched not read, but in the classroom teachers just hand us his scripts and say "that's literature"

While researching for upcoming fish facts I ended up going down a rabbit hole on parrotfish teeth, and I need to share this information in another form than just a fish fact. This stuff is unbelievable. You know the beak of the parrotfish, right? It's formed from the fused teeth of the parrotfish, as an adaptation to have ample biting surface to scrape off and chew on coral, their main food source.

Well. To constantly chew on coral, they must have some pretty hard teeth, right? And they indeed do: the teeth of the parrotfish are made up of a mineral called fluorapatite, which forms intricate, chainmail-like woven structures on a microscopic level. Fluorapatite just so happens to be the second hardest biomineral found. This stuff, the parrotfish's teeth?? They are stronger than copper, silver and gold. That's crazy, right!!?? A square inch of the parrotfish's teeth can withstand a whopping 530 TONS OF PRESSURE!! That's the weight of 88 ELEPHANTS on top of a single square inch!!!! The only biomineral that is tougher is the teeth of chitons, that is the single tougher thing in the whole world!!! Not only that, but the stiffness and hardness of the teeth increases the more we get closer to the tip (as the mineral fibers get closer and closer to one another), the very tips of the teeth even surpass the chiton teeth in stiffness!!!

That feels like it shouldn't be right, no? You'd think that the toughest biominerals in the world would belong to, like, the skull of an animal that rams into rocks or maybe the shell of some animal, not the teeth! The teeth of chitons and parrotfish out of all animals no less! Who would've guessed that the diet of "rock animal" would make the parrotfish require some of the toughest dentition the world has ever seen, huh? That right there is one super good reason why you should never stick your finger in the mouth of one.

like every other game dev born after 1985 i've had thoughts of making my own Pokemon-like and the main roadblock for me has been: how do i come up with a typing system that doesn't just mimic Pokemon's? and the answer is you don't come up with a system. maybe there's types but they're completely ad-hoc - you could even have one-off types just for one specific mon or move if you want. the flexibility is dizzying; you can add dozens or hundreds of new types whenever. sound type, radiation type, magic type. go wild! you begin to run into combinatorial explosion. strengths and weaknesses grow more nonsensical as you start skipping over most of your ever-growing type chart anytime you add a new one. after all, who cares whether food-type mons are weak or strong versus electricity? they just need to be weak against munch-type attacks, and maybe mold-type too. to make full use of the increasingly-specific types you've been coming up with, some of your mons end up with 5 or 10 types. your spidershark monster is, at the very least, a spider, shark, swim, beast, and bug type. overlaps happen; redundancies crop up. music type, nuclear type, mystic type. have you done those before? don't worry about it. 3 years into development you cannot imagine having ever hated anyone as much as you hate yourself

It began on a random night in 2014. When I learned that you could be transgender, that the dreams and visions I had had were not only feasible but a reality many folks lived. My hrt journey started in 2016 but my trials and tribulations to learn, understand, and mold womanhood into what truly incorporates my identity began in 2021.

It was no longer about what medications could do for me, but the evolution and growth I could achieve by my own hands. I found womanhood as a black woman, fighting against social norms and perceptions that already percieved me as highly masculine and hyper-sexualized. Having to writhe, rumble, and generally fight to be seen and heard is never a reality I would've imagined. However, 7 years later, I am the most beautiful and charismatic black woman I had ever dreamed I would be. I'm wise as my aunt is, navigating social situations with the grace and finesse she bears, I am as confident as a wild storm, bending to the will of no one and carving the path that I am destined.

When I was in my adolescence, I dreamed of becoming a charismatic, influential, and beautiful black woman. I am now 24 feeling as if I finally made it. I'm the person I only ever hoped I would blossom into; the person that I envisioned when I read on tumblr that "things get better". If you are reading this, pre social or medical transition or shivering in fear of what being a transgender woman would mean for you, your safety, and your future, I want you to know that I made it. I survived passed the life expectancy of a black transgender woman and I am fucking thriving despite the adversities and walls set against me. Love yourself, embrace your truth, and let no one dictate who or what you will blossom into.
