#regarding lineart I usually don't do it. but if i do i try to paint a little bit over it just to integrate it with the color better

Note
grahhh i love ur art so much. when u paint how do u integrate ur lineart/sketch if at all? or do you paint from scratch ??
Thank you! I almost always discard the sketch immediately after blocking in the colors and/or major shadow-shapes on a layer underneath (basically just recreating the shape of the sketch in shadow/color, just to have a blobby base to build on top of).
I either delete it or, more usually, merge everything on one layer and paint over it.

ZENO STARRYSHARKS BIG FAQ. YAY
this is gonna go over all the questions people ask me about my art, OCs, etc etc ^^ starting with -
ART QUESTIONS:
Q: WHAT DO YOU USE TO DRAW?
A: ibispaint x on shitty samsung. no stylus just my fingers. very occasionally (and not in several months now) i will use MS paint with a wacom tablet and pen!
Q: WHAT BRUSHES DO YOU USE?
A: main lineart pens are love pen and dip pen (hard) on a 60-80% opacity. when i do my pencil style i use hard mapping pen (bleed).
Q: HOW DO YOU DO THAT SCREENTONE THING?
A: this PNG.
Tumblr media
you're gonna place the png over where you want to add a halftone, and then lasso that area. then, click "invert selection area", and erase over the halftone layer. it should only be left on the area you wanted it to be on. you can change the color with alpha lock.
Q: HOW DO YOU COLOR SO WELL?
A:
Q: HOW DO YOU DRAW DIFFERENT BODY TYPES?
A: it's kinda complicated because i myself believe that i have poor body diversity when it comes to my original characters, but i'll try to explain myself. by a general rule, contrast is most important. top-heavy, bottom-heavy, larger lower limbs, smaller lower limbs, etc etc etc it's all in the contrast baybe. let's use nova (a skinny character), pins (a top-heavy character), and novocaine (a fat character) as examples. please ask me directly if you want any advice on other body types.
firstly, nova. she is very thin with a more scrawny build rather than athletic. to draw her, there are three parts (excluding arms) -
head, body and legs.
these are parts that almost every character has and the most important thing about them is their size. different characters will have different sized heads and bodies and legs as we'll see later, based on age, body type, etc... nova is only a teen, so she'll have a big head with big eyes to up the childish moe-factor of her design! other than that, she's pretty proportionate by anime standards with a regular sized body and long legs.
Tumblr media
however for a character like pins a lot changes. pins is extremely top heavy, and larger than nova. he has a muscular build that's heavily unrealistic - while there's probably someone out there with a similar build to nova absolutely nobody can achieve the elusive pins build. because his body is so exaggerated, it must be the forefront, and he has small legs and a small head to compensate.
Tumblr media
because i have few muscles in my oc roster, i tend to exaggerate the buffest characters. i would give another example but his existence is spoilers for the project he belongs to. ;;
when it comes to fat characters, i have little to say for dudes because i don't draw them often (sorry fat guy enthusiasts 💔). but novocaine is an example of how i go about drawing fat girls. namely it all comes back to contrast - rather than drawing her ankles and lower arms larger, i draw them smaller to emphasise the size of her thighs, hips and upper arms as when it comes to irl fat people, those parts are usually larger. i also added more examples from my dangan art.
Tumblr media
Q: WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
otherwise the proportions are similar to the skinny teen model, just with shorter legs.
more on body types here:
A: western cartoons, like invader zim and mlaatr. 2000s moe anime like lucky star. my mutuals <3. robert valley. jamie hewlett. alex ahad. splatoon. stuff i find on pinterest. and you guys who say that my art inspires you!
OC QUESTIONS
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR OC PROJECTS? WHAT ARE THEY ABOUT?
A: as follows:
MAIN THREE:
(AKA these are the ones i'm dead-set on making, and will probably actually become fully realised one day.)
ULTIMATE X-CALIBUR - sci-fi adventure comic about a girl called nova who travels across the galaxy with her friends to find the shards of a broken star called the ultimate x-calibur. like one piece but with cute kemonomimis in space.
REASSASSINATION - horror comedy comic about a dead girl who loses her memories after being resurrected by a manic scientist. she becomes his personal assassin in order to get shots of medicine that will bring back her memories, and has to deal with school life and a mysterious group of catholics coming to kill her on top of that. it's currently being written and will come out eventually.
STARSAINTS CARNIVAL - psychorror (kinda) fantasy RPG game about a group of children who are transported to an wonderland-esque paracosm where they have to make their own wishes come true before their 13th birthdays with the help of ghosts named starsaints, or risk having their heads chopped off. it's one of my largest-scale pet projects so will probably take a while to wrangle.
LESSER/EARLY DEV PROJECTS:
(AKA the ones that are either too early in development to confirm anything, or will probably not be fully realised any time soon, but it's still fun to rotate the characters around in my mind.)
MAGICAL GIRL WARD - another psychorror magical girl comic about a group of girls who who plan a group suicide online, but are turned into magical girls on accident and have to fight "viruses" to help other girls. very messy in terms of development right now and will take a while.
METALLIC MIRACLE - sci-fi about a child solider cyborg who is sent back to earth after being in a deep sleep for some 50 years after a war she was forced to fight in. i actually really wanna do this one.
SINSTRING MANOR - survival horror RPG game about a doll who finds out she's a doll attempts to escape her family home and gain autonomy with the help of a fly and a servant boy.
PLANET☆PIGTAIL - magical girl comic about girls who channel magic through their pigtails to defeat evil monsters while dealing with middle school problems.
+ a billion more that i can't even remember lololol
Q: CAN WE ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR OCS + STORIES?
A: PLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLE
Q: CAN WE DRAW YOUR OCS?
A: PLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLE
OTHER QUESTIONS
Q: WHEN ARE YOU GONNA BE OFF HIATUS?
A: when my exams are over i'll start posting personal finished illustrations again. so, like, mid-june!
Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DRAWING FOR?
A: i came out of the womb with an anime girl drawing in my hand
Q: DO YOU TRACE?
A: nooooooooooooo
ok i'm tired please frequently ask me a question if you want me to answer it

hey hey! love your art a lot and was wondering if you would ever post speedpaints or give any sort of insight into your rendering process? i’d be very curious to see how you make your pieces come together and how your style - being so consistent yet so varied and expressive when applied to any given drawing - uh, builds, i guess. thanks a bunch!! keep it up either way, your work is super inspiring. <3 :)
Hi!! First of all, thank you so much and what the hell I'll cry, CONSISTENT?? EXPRESSIVE??? WOAH.........
As for speedpaints hmm I've always thought to myself that recording speedpaints would be really interesting but in actuality I don't really know how to......do that ? My drawings take so many hours to render, would the footage of it all just clog my computer?? Where would I upload them?? Youtube???
But honestly I'm so honoured by this ask that I think I'd like to genuinely give it a try :o
But when it comes to insight regarding rendering.... bit of a harder thing to answer honestly. Especially since I get about 90% of all the colouring work done within the typically flat colour stage before rendering since I wing all my colours on the go. My initial colours are usually pretty messy and soft (as is my sketch), but in the rendering phase I make it a point to use a lot of harder edge or at least high opacity brushes to define shapes more and make them sharper.
Tumblr media
I do all my rendering on one merged layer with my initial sketch/lineart and base colours usually with additional airbrush/colour tweak layers merged as well. I try to use a lot of colour variation within everything I'm rendering, and my initial colours usually utilise a lot of airbrushing to set the base for those colour variations. I of course do additional effects/backgrounds/sometimes specific parts like props on separate layers but all of my main rendering happens on one
This is a very poor explanation I'm sorry, I hope the progress pictures show at least something HAHA
here's also a random water painting tutorial I made for a friend that maybe explains my initial colouring stage slightly?
Tumblr media
Don't know if this explains literally anything, but thank you so much for your ask :-D !! I'll look into speedpaints and update here if I ever figure those out.....

Hii, hope its alright to ask that !! I aim to have a painting style like yours, but no matter what I do, it either looks like untextured cell-shading or a painting style I dont like How do you paint? what brushes do you use? Im desperate and really want to imrpove me art </3 Your art gives me such a joy
First , thank you so much <3 I'm always happy to hear that someone is inspired by my art😭
And regarding the painting method… oh well it will be difficult for me to explain haha. I mean I usually just improvise and go with my gut, whatever that sounds like haha. I play around with colors until something clicks. And I often change brushes (I have the impression maybe too often haha) because I try to experiment and find what will be most comfortable for me to work with. But usually I use brushes that have some texture and give me the vibe of drawing on paper🤔When I'm done with rendering I put some noise to make it look better (at least in my opinion haha)
I don't know what program you use, but I work in Clip Studio Paint. There are a lot of fun free brushes! And as I said, I change brushes often, but there are a few that are always my favs, so I put them here if anyone is interested: This one I use often for lineart
I often use this set for coloring, some of them have cool textures
And this one for coloring when I want to achieve a bit softer effect Also I have some brushes converted from Photoshop; Greg Rutkowski brushes are great and Inktober 2019 Photoshop Brushes by ArtistMef too!
I guess that's all I can explain, I hope it helps at least a little 😭Also, I think it's best to observe different artists you like and study them. You can also find a lot of free, pretty good guides on yt, I personally learned a lot from them. Aaaand, (even though I don't like hearing it haha), you have to practice and have patience. Over time, you will slowly see better and better results! So good luck! <3

This was another Christmas' present for my nephew. They were visiting, and at night, I worked on this to eventually give to him. (Actually later inspired him to ask for his own Faux Stainglass making stuff.) Click below for the crazy process to get it made.
Now... I was in my families guest bedroom, since my bedroom was larger and better for my brother's family to be in. Previously in this room, was our collection of weapons. Because my family appreciates the astetic and well, also the use in some regards. Though mainly machetes and hatches, for outdoor yard work. A bunch are just wall hangers. Though some are sharp, and some are heavy.
Tumblr media
(Dad has taken them down, so he can build a better, safer case to put them in. So smol children can't get grabby.) Trying to get the piece done in time. I realized that it was late, and I needed a good straightedge. Now, I grew up in a family, that had many sharp things about the house. With my father being a woodcarver. I was taught at an early age, to appreciate and respect sharp things. For being useful, and also dangerous. As an adult, I think I own... (counts) um... ALOT of sharp and pointys in my bedroom. But my bedroom also doubles as my workshop, so it makes sense. Though, I do have some collection stuff in here. But mostly functional blades, like my exactos, box cutters and the like for crafting/building.
And the reason I tell this story, is because it was second nature, to just do this...
Tumblr media
Reached back, (since I couldn't go to my room to possibly grab the Jill Ruler) And took out the collection's oldest resident. My father's Machete he brought to America from his birthplace in Columbia. It's older then me by a long shot, probably 50-55 years old, and beloved as a main staple when it comes to outdoor wood chopping. It is certainly a first reach when needing to do things, and using it as a straight edge was normal for me... But as I was working on it, forgot that this isn't normal and had a chuckle about it. And sent pictures to friends who know me, and they were amused. Note: it is sharp, and can be dangerous. Treat any sharp object with respect and care. Don't just grab things willy nilly. So, with a straight edge secure, I started working on the design.
Tumblr media
The process of making Faux Stainglass, usually takes me 3-4 days. Sketching and doing the lines, is day one. Because the liquid leading needs to ideally, cure overnight. I tend to sketch out the design, then overlay it with Sharpie. Since the general thickness of a basic sharpie, is about what the lines are in Liquid leading. (Though a properly skilled person, probably could make the lines how ever they want. I am still learning)
Tumblr media
As you can tell from my Wobbly lines. It also doesn't help that often these projects were at minimum, a year apart. If not several. So any good lineart skill I gained, might have been downgraded as I worked on a new project. Day 2 is color, which then needs to cure overnight as well.
Tumblr media
And this is what it looked like, before drying. So, there is some color change as it becomes more transparent. Day 3-4 is letting it cure fully. In case various sections might have had too thick of paint, and it taking longer to cure. Mainly a choice I make to make sure that the piece is finished, before being presented as a present.

I have a question, what is ur drawing style? Like realism or caricature or something like that? I like to draw cartoony characters more than realism, but that’s because when I was in my art class we had to do realism. Also what’s your fav media to use? Ik that u do a lot of ur works on a program on a sketch pad, but off of the sketch pad which is ur fav?
Hey there! I never really like to define my drawing style, cause I have a hard time doing it. It depends on the drawing itself, or what I feel like drawing (what I feel fits best in regards to what I'm trying to portray/depict). I suppose it would be somewhere inbetween cartoony and realistic, cause I love both. Since I love both, I love mixing them, be creative with it and experiment.
My art/artstyle is kinda all over the place. I like experimenting and having fun with it. So sometimes my art will look more realistic and other times it will be more cartoonish. I don't think an artstyle is something that is set in stone, you can always change it up if you want to. You don't have to pick one artstyle and only do that one. Understanding one artstyle and mastering it often makes it easier to do others, too. It goes kinda hand in hand, you know?
(I also don't like it when art schools force students to focus on ONE THING. Cause art is so much more than just realism. Though I've never been to art school so I don't know alot about that)
As for art media, I mainly do digital art (when I say mainly, I mean only). I don't enjoy drawing traditionally, it just... doesn't do it for me. Some years ago I did some traditional stuff for inktober 2017 where I would line with pens and color with uh... promarkers I think it was? And while that was fun, I prefer digital art way more. I guess I just don't have the patience or attention span to do traditional art or both.
(also in case you're curious, I draw on an Ipad using procreate, I usually do all my sketching there before transferring it over to my PC where I use a Wacom Cintiq and Paint Tool SAI for lineart and coloring and everything else. Sometimes I'll do everything on my ipad, it depends on the drawing )
