bocchi the rock review
So my initial impression was that id be getting something as good as Yuru Camp or A Place Further Than the universe. (Two CGDCT animes but on totally different spectrums). I enjoyed Bocchi the Rock but it didn’t hit anywhere as hard as the mentioned too. It might be a little more in line with Lucky Star, and probably K-On but I haven’t actually seen it.
The first episode was funny seeing Hitori being an absolute mess but the more you watch you realize, oh, she really does has problems. Like anxiety isnt that funny quirky ness. But maybe it is because the girls feel really anime in a way where I can’t really take Hitori’s spiraling seriously and Kita and Nijika just think “haha shes funny”.
I feel bad because I think if I ever had to deal with Hitori as a person I wouldn’t be able to stand it. Which is saying something because I saw a lot of myself in her when I was that age. Maybe not to that extreme but there were times where I wouldnt be able to say what I was really feeling and got dragged into something I didn’t want to.
I thought Nijika and Kita would get some sort of character development or something. Kita seemed almost too perfect and I wished she had some sort of flaw because she’s too pretty and outgoing and friendly and cute and literally she was like too perfect. The only thing she did “bad” was that she submitted the School Festival form without Hitori’s consent but she owned up to it and it was painted in a way that “she did it for Hitori’s sake” and it did turn out for the best. You could say her flaw was being pushy but hm.
Nijika we didn’t see too much of even though she was there. I guess her thing was with her sis.
Oh speaking of, maybe I’m old but I think the older cast really are the best. Love how supportive they were, even if drink girl is tropey as hell. I’m reminded of the sister and teacher in Yuru Camp, but Bocchi’s adults are more anime. Oh, Hitori’s parents are… there I guess. I don’t think they were unsupportive but i dont think they were the best in trying to get her to grow. Theyd really just leave her and go “oh, shes being Hitori again”. They’d really let her grow mushrooms on her head huh.
Ryou might be the fan favorite but I kind of can’t stand her. I don’t mind the kuudere/cool persona she gives off but I hate when the think they can get away with inconveniencing someone because it’s quirky and funny (to the audience). Unfortunately Karakara is one of my favorite songs in all of Kessoku Band album.
The visuals are… a little too bubble for me to take seriously. I looked up a few of the manga scans and I guess they translated them okay but I was hoping it’d be like Yuru Camp where the character designs are just to be anime but the girls feel more real but I just needed to stop hoping for it to be Yuru Camp. The band animation were pretty neat and the jokes when they just do silly stuff with Hitori’s imaginations were funny in a way that I would have laughed more at it 15 years ago if I’d never seen Gintama.
I know the original source was a 4koma and theres probably more content not covered by the anmime, but I kind of wished they’d ended the 12 eps with the school festival? I mean getting her new guitar felt a little anti climatic to wrap up the cour.
Oh, ngl, I was kinda rooting for Hitori/Kita but I don’t think Kita’s crush on Ryou ever went away but whatever.
Bochi the Rock was fine, it’s not the 10/10 Ive seen MAL give it, probably the majority of the audience thought it was funny. It was amusing in places but the humor kind of wore off after a few episodes. (Kinda like Asobi Asobase)  I made a mistake having high expectations, but I don’t regret watching it.

Anime Feminist’s Top Picks for 2022
Tumblr media
From romance to horror, seinen to shoujo, here are the stars that shone brightest from the past year.
How did we choose our recs?
Participating staff members picked five titles and ranked them. The only rule was that the series or season had to be complete as of December 2022 or been on the air without a break for over a year. This meant that split-cours and shows that began in 2022 and are still airing (like Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury) were NOT eligible. They’ll be rolled onto any 2022 lists.
We always want to emphasize that our recommendations are not meant as a rubber-stamp of “Feminist Approval.” Rather, we aim to highlight shows we found valuable and think might appeal to our readers as well, with any content warnings or caveats that might apply.
How are they ranked?
They’re not, really. We’ve highlighted our “top picks” that received the most staff member votes, but otherwise they’re just organized alphabetically. The team has varying tastes, as do our readers, and we didn’t want to try to put those tastes in a hierarchy.
Hey, you didn’t list my favorite show!
That’s okay! Like we said, we limited ourselves to a Top Five, and everyone has different tastes. If there’s something that slipped under our radar and you think it’s a series other feminist-minded viewers would enjoy, please let us and your fellow readers know in the comments!
Read it at Anime Feminist!

they're putting bocchi the rock in theaters, so they re-voiced a scene from the anime to promote it. now, you may have already seen the trailer for this, but I hadn't until I went to see the kizumonogatari re-edit tonight. so imagine my reaction, waiting for the next trailer, clueless, in the dark in more than one sense, just completely unprepared to get jumpscared by this frame projected fifty feet high in the ikebukuro toho cinema

What do you think are the best anime adaptations from manga (can be series or movies)? Why do you think so?
This is a really good question considering what we've seen in the last year or two!
I think there's quite a few, and they can earn that title through a few different ways. Though personally, I have my biases for what I look for in an adaptation, so there will be a bit of a trend in this list for sure. (also, this will largely stick to series that I've read at least a bit of the manga for)
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
Tumblr media
I mean, even if I have my gripes with some of the content in the manga, it's impossible to say that what Saitou and Madhouse are doing here is anything less than a stellar adaptation. Coaxing Shingo Yamashita out and into the episode was an incredible feat, and it's just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what Frieren has delivered. So some pieces may not be for me, but in terms of quality, yesterday's episode is pretty damn impossible to beat.
Heavenly Delusion
Tumblr media
While I just said Frieren was unbeatable, I personally don't believe that as an adaptation in the full sense of the word, it can match up to what Hirotaka and I.G did for Heavenly Delusion. One of the biggest things with an anime is finding how to improve on the source material. Faithfulness is just a single piece of the puzzle, and Hirotaka and co are a great example of that. They add so much to the anime in terms of original scenes. Even more with how they choose to execute on some sequences as they add totally new meaning to them. As a story, Hirotaka's adaptation is the pinnacle of what an adaptation should be. Adding to the original context, re-ordering events for better executing in an animated format, trimming the fat and pieces that don't quite stick. And then adding on top incredible work in terms of art and animation. The value that Heavenly Delusion's anime imparted to the series is entirely incomparable to what others have done.
Bocchi The Rock!
Tumblr media
I mean, this one is sorta self-explanatory. Taking the simplicity of a 4-koma manga and using that to explore anime as a medium? Saitou was a madman on this project, and the team behind its adaptation deserves their flowers. Story doesn't matter here near as much as expression does, simply because of the style of the series, and Cloverworks delivered on that in spades. It's pretty crazy how good 4-koma adaptations can be sometimes.
Spy x Family
Tumblr media
This is an interesting one because really, nothing can quite stand out at a glance. But I think when you start to dig further into the series, it becomes apparent how much passion and dedication is held for it by the two studios working on it. There's a lot of added moments and details, and they work tirelessly at expanding upon each panel. It's not at the same level as Heavenly Delusion, nor does its expression stretch the limits like Bocchi's does, but I think it puts in commendable work on both ends regardless.
Kaguya-Sama: Love Is War
Tumblr media
Another sorta self-explanatory one. Aka Akasaka certainly has ability and quality, but if you believe for a moment that the manga is the superior way to experience the series you'd be sorely mistaken. A-1 has elevated Kaguya-sama to stardom through its incredible sense of humor, and sheer dedication to comedy. The rap episode from the most recent season is just a prime example of the depth with which they approach the content. If you're a RomCom series, Kaguya-Sama is the gold standard of an adaptation you'll always be reaching for.
The overall "idea" with this list is adaptations that add something that the source material was unable to. Expression, humor, depth, structuring or symbolism- they all add to the material in ways that only an anime could. Frieren is the odd one out in that sense, as it brings sheer dedication to the manga above all else. You could argue that the flashbacks have more detail, which I would agree with, but it's not tantamount to an improvement in what Frieren aims to do with itself. A great example of my expectations for "improvement" is the Heiter-Fern flashback scene from the second episode where he first meets Fern. A great change to the narrative that places far more focus on Heiter in the present (of that flashback) than it does Himmel in the past.
Anyways, I think these are some of the most standout adaptations in the recent years, with some of them like Bocchi The Rock! and Heavenly Delusion being ones that will be remembered for an incredibly long time due to what they were able to accomplish.

My anime rating system
(These are how much I like them, and not necessarily how much I recommend them in general.)
No stars - I REALLY dislike it for some reason.
⭐ - I don't want to watch it, but I don't have much against it, either.
⭐⭐ - Something to watch when eating a meal.
⭐⭐⭐ - Something to watch and re-watch, might read the manga, and possibly have interest in specific figures.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Truly interested in the series, will occupy my thoughts after watching it.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Reserved for anime I become obsessed with, and will talk your ears off about (Bocchi The Rock qualifies, and actually is an anime I'd recommend in general).
I wanted a five star system so anime with three stars would be "objectively subjectively mid" 😉

Come to think of it, re: idol shows (or in this case at least musician shows) it's wild to compare Zombieland Saga to Bocchi the Rock in terms of how much people care about the fictional bands.
You can go on youtube right now and watch the full Kessoku Band performance of That Band, taken right from the anime. People recreated Bocchi's broken-string-bottle-assisted solo because it was rad. Man what a good fucking anime.
