Please, don’t forget about the women in Afghanistan.
This image is not at all a commentary on Islam and/or of the different head-coverings that a woman may choose to wear while respecting her faith. Wearing a burqa/burka does not equate to an inherent lack of rights/freedom. This is also not a criticism of the Barbie movie. This is a statement about the brutal treatment of the women and girls in Afghanistan (as well as in Iran).
I loved the Barbie movie and think it’s a very important and empowering film. However, it is a bit jarring when I’m scrolling through my phone, listening to the Barbie soundtrack, and I come across an article detailing the mounting horrors these women face in these countries. There is so much happening in the world, and it all needs news time, but the virtual media silence on this topic is frightening.
Even though my country isn’t perfect (especially so after June of last year), it’s easy to lose perspective on how privileged I am.
The many different flavors of western feminism aren’t for everyone and every culture; to think so would be privileged and tone deaf. There is no "one-size-fits-all" kind of empowerment. But, objectively, what is happening to women and girls in Afghanistan and Iran is abhorrent and cannot be forgotten.
If Barbie can be anything, then Barbie can be an advocate and an activist. Do what you can, Barbies.
“I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.” ― Audre Lorde

ULTRAKILL CHARACTER LORE:
Aisling the nun (the abbess).
The woman who was damned alongside the angel Asbeel.
Aisling lived during the time that humans had to completely evacuate and were living on the Earthmovers, towards the End. As one of the few remaining spiritual/maternal figures, she became responsible for many of the children that were left.
Because of the chemical hazards/radiation/unclean air, all citizens wear hazmat+gasmasks, an attempt to avoid contaminated dust/air. Aisling does all she can for her people, but knows that they are doomed. She tries regardless.
By the councils definition, Asbeel is 'weak' to the suffering of humans. Her outrage at the fact that the angels are standing by has to be repressed.
She is drawn in by Aisling's desperate prayers for the survival of her dependents, for their safety, for a better tomorrow.
Aisling's determination in the face of inevitable starvation after the long war made earth unsuitable for human life is compelling, her passion for her people drawing Asbeel like a moth to a flame. They grow close, and over time communicate in a series of letters, to conceal their interactions, each more drawn out then the last.
Despite this, Asbeel is eventually caught for 'favouring' the community with 'unlawful' use of Holy Light. The Watchers (the snitches) track every usage of holy light, it's difficult to avoid their inspection, and every one of her infractions was recorded.
She tried to intervene in quiet ways to avoid detection, blessing their struggling plants; just barely enough that they fruit. She would cleanse the irradiated, chemically contaminated rainwater the skies wept. As the Earthmover began to prioritize it's own systems for survival in the face of dwindling light sources, human associated systems are categorised as NON-ESSENTIAL to the AI's survival. Their water is dependent on what they can collect.
Aisling was not a young woman and would been long-dead without Asbeel's intervention. Her radiation aggravated tumours were only held at bay by Asbeel's Blessing.
When Asbeel is confronted by the Council, all of whom are staging outrage at her for going against God's supposed Will of humanities demise, Aisling is accused alongside her. She has to fight accusations of Bewitching Asbeel for blessings, for leading her Astray. This is designed to make Asbeel launch into denying this claim, in turn the Council uses the denial to accuse her of being Compromised with Affection (for a lesser being, a mortal, no less.) Asbeel cannot deny this, and cannot deny her rage before accusing the Council of their willful disregard. She is of course, immediately accused of blasphemous heresy. Alongside whatever litany of sins the council gleefully assigns to her actions.
She pleads with Gabriel that he knows this to be wrong, blinded as he is by the Councils lies, led into their frenzy. Asbeel pleads to her Brother to understand.
Gabriel severs her connection to the Light and Asbeel falls alongside Aislings Soul into hell, succumbed to the absence of Asbeel's blessing.

This whole thing with the Titan submersible has revived my morbid childhood fascination with the Titanic story. Actually no I wouldn’t call it a fascination I’d probably call it an unhealthy obsession. Listen to me,
I saw the Titanic movie for the first time when I was 7. Do not ask me why my mom allowed me to watch it at that age. But from that point on my life changed FOREVER, dude. I’d watch Titanic on repeat. I had my grandmother sew me a dress like Rose’s (and I still fucking have it!! It is literally sitting in my closet). I made my parents take me to the Titanic museum in Florida. They got me Rose’s diamond necklace. I wore that and the dress to my second grade pictures. I have a school photo of me dressed up like Rose fucking Dawson from the 1997 film Titanic. I can literally grab this out of my closet right now bc fun fact I still have that photo too!! I tried to grow out my hair really long like Rose’s. My mom rescued a pregnant cat that was living in a pipe on our street, and when she had kittens I literally named two of them Jack and Rose. I think even at one point I tried imitating the scene where Jack drew Rose and tried drawing her myself (with her titties out and everything! At the tender young age of 7). Rose might have been my very first bisexual awakening but let’s not dwell on that. Anyway I had a Problem.
Flash forward to now. Some 20-ish years later. I hear about the Titan submersible. Before I know it I’m absorbing every single news article I can find. I am drowning in tumblr memes. I rewatched the Titanic movie today (and holy fuck it’s SO much darker than I remember??? WHY did my mom let me watch it at that age holy shit). I am being dragged kicking and screaming back into a hyperfixation I didn’t even realize I HAD. And it’s not even a good hyperfixation. I hate it here. Why was 7 year old me so invested in a movie that isn’t even accurate to the real historical event. My media obsession started with Titanic. Will it end with Titanic? Is this meant to haunt me forever?? Will I be on my deathbed thinking about Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio?? Who knows! I sure fucking don’t!!

Gloria: Barbie?
Barbie: Yeah?
Gloria: Did you just pick up that marble and put it in your mouth?
Barbie: You saw that?
Gloria: Yes, spi-
Barbie: *runs away*
Gloria: Sasha, stop her, she has a marble in her mouth!
Sasha: I saw Barbie swallow a charm from a necklace last week. She'll be fine.
Gloria: She has to learn!
Sasha: Listen, she showers, brushes her teeth, and doesn't throw trash on the floor anymore. You can't expect more than that from her.

allegory
bg3, wyll/shadowheart, rated g, ~2100 words
.
“So I’m the damsel in distress, then?”
“And I can be the dragon,” she says, her eyes flashing.
He bites back a laugh. “That’s not how it works. Now you must be slain.”
She tilts her head, exposing the long, pale slope of her neck. “Very well. I’ll make it easy for you. Easy enough for a damsel.”
Wyll is a hero. Somehow, this means he’s the one who might need rescuing.
