Hi anon! I’d be cautious about your request in the past because I usually like to know more about someone’s reading preferences but it was fun to come up with a random reclist :) I decided to go for a mix of old favourites and fics I haven’t recced in the blog before. I hope you enjoy them!

something something I think the discourse around whether or not its acceptable to criticize fics and in what context in part stems from the way online fandom has changed and now resides primarily in spaces where it's extremely difficult to effectively curate your own experience, and even the platforms which give you some tools to do that (like tumblr) are still fundamentally public platforms rather than closed/intentional communities. older fandom spaces resembled discord servers more than tumblr or twitter and so older fandom etiquette vs newer fandom etiquette have been shaped around different kinds of spaces. and this even extends to fic platforms - in the past most fic was hosted in spaces dedicated to specific fandoms or interests (with some exceptions) or even subsections of fandom, whereas now most of it is hosted on ao3 which, while it does give you strong navigation tools is also fundamentally a very open and public platform. don't have the presence of mind right now to trace the specifics of how this effects current day fandom discourse but I think it HAS to be a major factor
#my first fanfiction exposure was from a website that was dedicated to fic from only one fandom#unfortunately that website is defunct now#and a lot of my early fic experience also came from curated LJ lists#with links to like. personal websites and random blogs i would never have stumbled across organically#i was 13 at the time and already a lot of these reclists were outdated + full of broken links#idk I think a lot about how my early fandom experience circa 2012-2014 looks entirely different from my 2023-2024 fandom experience

Damn I forgot how long it takes to make a good reclist. Between getting a good list tracking down all the fics writing all the relevant info and then a little comment if I have something to say, that stuff is time consuming

Survey Results! Finally!
I’m finally getting to posting the survey results! It’s taken about a month longer than I expected – work got busy and my laptop screen is busted. Also, writing this out took was longer than I expected – ten pages in total. And that’d be a horrible tumblr post. So instead, here’s the main findings and the longform answers, and you can take a look at the google doc here for a more in depth analysis from each question.
Main Findings:
Respondents are about evenly divided as to whether or not they reblog.
People generally kudos and comment!
Nobody knows we have a fic randomizer. (We have a fic randomizer. It’s on the spreadsheet)
Sixty percent of respondents either do or would self rec
The biggest write in answer for why people don’t rec is shyness
The biggest reason for why people don’t read is they don’t remember to go back
Opening up the reclist is contentious, people are generally okay with a script and could use a reminder
What we're doing/did in response:
There’s now a @reclister role on AiFL, request it to get pinged when the rec list goes up or to get reminders as to when to rec
I’m posting what fics have been recced with the 24 hour reminder and the tag list.
I’ve added ‘Less Common Authors’ as a possible theme
I’m going to open up the reccing sheet to everyone – I just have to lock down some stuff first
I’ll update the value filters for the reccing sheet
I’m going to work on a script that updates the basic fields (title, author, word count, rating, ect) for the form. This one might take a bit.

The reason I don’t rec every week is that I find writing summaries hard, everything else is easy for me/The summaries aren’t very useful to me:
So, a short guide to writing summaries for recs:
If the author has something that works – you can always copy it. Part of the reason why this isn’t ‘just a copy and paste what they have’ option is that AO3 summaries can take up space, and we don’t want folks to get sad about having to scroll lots. But if the author has a sentence at the bottom of the summary that explains everything, there’s no reason to do more work.
If the author didn’t provide a one sentence summary, then include the basics of the plot. (Essek gets dicked down by Caleb, Essek and Caleb skip through the wildflowers together, aeorian magic turns Caleb into a capybara and Essek into a hot tub filled with oranges, ect). Then add an adjective or two that has something to do with tone. (A hilarious story about Essek being dicked down by Caleb, a tense account of Essek and Caleb skipping through the wildflowers together; Aerian magic turns Caleb into a capybara and Essek into a hot tub full of oranges. It’s surprisingly romantic.) Think about how it made you feel, what genre you would put it in, what tags you’d add on storygraph.
Don’t worry if it’s kind of dry! A) It’s probably less dry than you think, and b) you can do more gushing within the ‘what you liked about it’ section.
One last thing to remember – there’s no one right way to make a summary, people are looking for different things.
If the rec form was opened up to people who aren’t on AIFL don’t you think the name would need to be changed to reflect that it’s not an AIFL thing anymore?
Maybe! I wasn’t planning on not posting it on AiFL, and I’d suspect that the majority of reccers would still be AiFL members (just because getting notifications of something on tumblr is a lot harder). But to be honest, this would be a relatively small issue.
I'm not a huge shadowgast fan, but I think reclists are cool, and sometimes the fics are relevant to my interests

There’s @critter-genfic-events for a genfic one that was started by @Professor-Rye and is now being run by @operafloozy, there’s @widomaukficrecs, and I also have the reccing blog tools (group version or single user) in case you want to start your own!
Less a suggestion and more a general thought. I believe the anonymity of the reccers is an important part of this process and I am in no way saying that should be removed, but at the same time, it does feel impersonal, like a lack of commitment to one's tastes. Word of mouth doesn't tend to sway me to read new fic when I don't know the mouths the words are coming from. That said, take this with a grain of salt because, for the time being, I'm not the target audience of the rec lists.
Hey thanks for the comment! I agree with you! There’s a definite trade off in not knowing whether a reccer’s tastes line up with your own. It means that there’s not a great way to add moderation into the rec list, and with anonymity being an ever- dwindling resource on the internet, people’s attitudes towards it have shifted further into suspicion of intent. Even when it’s something like a rec list, I think there can be an anxiety about people finding a way to use it to bully authors – moreso than even having a consistent pseudonym. When really, I think there’s a good reason why reccers might want anonymity. Admitting you like something can be a vulnerable act! Social anxiety was the number one write-in reason as to why people didn’t rec, as is. I want people to feel comfortable reccing fics that are weird or kinky or require a lot of different warnings, and I wanted people to feel comfortable reccing their own fics. And it’s one thing to leave a kudos on someone’s work while signed in – something nobody else is going to see unless they bother to look – and another to put your name saying you enjoy any sort of beastiality or noncon or whatever else where any purity culture lover can object to on tumblr for all to see. The last thing I want is for people to be hurt or harassed because they participated in something that’s supposed to be a net good.
Anyway, this is all saying that I don’t think your concern is unfounded – and while I’m not likely to change anything about this rec list’s anonymity, if anyone else wants to try their hand at running one, it’s something to think about.
Also, I know I tend to read fic the same way, but it does seem to be a ton of repeat authors week-to-week, so maybe if once in a while the list can be to branch out to a never recc’d person?
I really like this idea, but the logistics of it are a little complex. I crunched the numbers, and out of 558 recs, there’s been 175 authors recced. Which is admittedly is a lot of overlap, but also that’s a lot to expect reccers to keep track of. But a top ten list should be doable! I crunched the numbers a couple of different ways – top numbers of times an author was recced, top number of different fics recced by an author, and top number of themes recced, which got me a list of fourteen authors – that seems doable. It’s now a possible theme.
More Information I got from number crunching includes:
86 authors have only been recced once
418 fics have been recced, 324 have only been recced once.
Most recced fics are Hard Mouth at seven times.
Royalgreen has had the most recs at 24, the most fics recced at 18, and the most themes recced at 17, but they also have 51 Critical Role Fics, so.
Further info can be found in this details sheet. I've also added a randomizer for general use, just because.

This can be done – it’s how the genfic rec list is currently set up. (as a note, while I’m currently running the genfic rec list, @professor-rye was the one to create it).
The AiFL rec list is currently set up so you can rec fics after the tumblr post, with the idea that people would probably look at the list of recs at the google sheet – which I realize isn’t the way it’s currently used. So you can still rec later, it just doesn’t have the same visibility. (The two exceptions for this are the ‘older recs’ and the ‘hidden gems’ recurring themes, because we know they’re going to recur and they’re not likely to be ineligible when the theme rolls around again, the way works in progress might be).
Logistically, the selecting the upcoming themes in advance doesn’t work as well from the admin side. Instead of remembering that next week is the last Tuesday of the month, I’ve got to remember to count the Tuesdays and order the progress. Right now the way it goes is that we pick the theme from the randomizer right before we post the reclist, so the same theme gets pasted into the ‘next week’s theme’ section, the google form, and the tumblr post at the same time. If I’m choosing a theme a month out, I select next month’s theme, add it to the google form, then go back and check what I’d selected a month ago and post that into the tumblr post and next week’s theme.
There’s also the fact that if we give too much lead time, it means folk procrastinate and forget. Most of the recs currently come in soon after I post the tag list or the 24 reminders as is, and while some people on the gen fic reclist post for multiple weeks at a time, I find that most of the recs are for the week of, anyway.
Anyway, I’m not completely against this, but currently the drawbacks outweigh the perks. Figuring out a different way to sort the upcoming themes for the genfic list is on my to-do list, maybe afterwards I’ll come back and revisit.

on armellin, or why you should delve into archives
With how much the spn fandom has changed and shifted over the years, there are a bunch of great creators who fall out of fashion or just general fandom consciousness and get 'lost' to the noobs. You get those 'reclist' authors that get passed around forever, but people who wrote equally great (or better!) work fall by the wayside. With art it can be worse -- tumblr's biggest benefit is that random old posts can pop up out of nowhere, but people are very rarely reccing art, or doing deep dives to find stuff that used to be popular and now gets rarely seen.
That brings us to @armellin, aka Sasha. You've probably seen some of her stuff if you're a spn fan on tumblr. She's got a particularly superb Ruby piece that just knocks me down with a feather. But there are a lot of really wonderful portraits in Sasha's archive that are just waiting for you to discover if you go into her art tag. She has some classical training, I'm pretty sure, and while her work is mostly digital you can really see all that talent in her pieces. I'll copy some particular favorites here, but you can and should go to her 'my artwork' tag and see some for yourself. The things she does with light!

so playful and so fun! such a lovely exploration of various wlw dynamics
Tonks has slept with a lot of women, but none of them were like Rolanda. She's been butch for as long as she can remember, and has known she was gay since before starting Hogwarts, but butch-femme dynamics always made the most sense to her. There was a complementarity to having a pair of high heels beside her boots and her trousers crumpled on the floor alongside a skirt. Besides, Tonks likes her lovers to have enough hair to stroke and tangle her fingers in.
(…) Tonks made a speciality out of seducing girls who claimed to be straight. There was an art to it: being a sympathetic ear for their boy troubles, making them laugh, and flirting just a little, gently, before pulling away. She smiled at them with her eyes as well as her lips, carefully didn't stare at their boobs, and always waited for them to make the first move. Five of them did.
This butch-butch dynamic is new and not quite comfortable, throwing Tonks' sense of herself just a little off balance. There's a lot she doesn't know about Rolanda yet, but what she does know is promising: laughter, great sex, and just enough friction to make it exciting.

Independent Love Song by @writcraft - Millicent Bulstrode/Ginny Weasley (6k, E). Millicent Bulstrode is a tailor and Ginny is losing her mind over a woman in a tweed blazer and burgundy brogues.
Millicent is stocky and smartly dressed, wearing highly polished burgundy brogues which immediately catch Ginny's eye because there's something very Gryffindor-ish about them. Her tweed blazer fits her curves perfectly, the shirt underneath open at the collar to reveal the smallest expanse of milky flesh. A blue silk handkerchief pokes jauntily from her blazer pocket and a colourful rainbow pin adorns the lapel. She’s handsome, Ginny’s mind unhelpfully supplies. Dapper, certainly. Where Millicent seemed all brute force and surly temperament at school, she now looks confident and happy.

Jo character study. everything about her growing-up backstory is heartwrenching and heartwarming — her friendship with greta! the greta g’s, it’s easier for two kids to be bumbling around the Met sculpture court than just one, all the times they were the only people for each other — and what a wonderful continuation too, her leaving the peaches and after! the letters, i cried.
The eyes on her are stronger here. It’s admiration, it’s attraction, it’s lust, all without the usual mask in place. Jo soaks in it. She barely even minds that her best friend couldn’t care less to check in on her, not when a stunning woman has decided Jo is the most desirable thing in here.
“I think you’re the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen,” Flo says to her while they are dancing.
Jo is, for once in her life, speechless. This random girl in the middle of fucking nowhere, Illinois says one sentence and it feels like Jo has won a game she’s being losing her whole fucking life. It’s been Jo against the world for years and years and finally, finally, Jo is scoring points.

Random Critical Role Reclist, part 1
I had the idea that I would use a version of the reclist tool for a personal reclist, posting everything I liked once a month. Only I'm also contributing to two other weekly reclists, and most of my fic reading has been related to those two. So it's taken me two months to get my first reclist out.
I still think it's a good idea, though! The general idea is that you write the rec right after reading (and presumably commenting), while it's still fresh in your mind. Then, at some point, you run the script and it spits out a formatted reclist for you. (there's more of an explanation here)
So here's the first part - Critical Role fics I've liked - some Shadowgast, some Laudna, a meeting with Aldreda and Kingsley, and more.

Recced because: It's a great exploration of different types of intimacy, and allows Bren and Essek to have very complicated relationships to morality, sexuality, and their own bodies. Bren especially is capable of doing horrible things within this AU, but is still a likable and deep character.

Hidden Gems by @fw00shy
I’ll never stop screaming about the masterpiece that is Phoenix in the Fire - not on this list but one of my top five favourite short fics ever - but when it comes to Fwoosh, suddenly I can’t find the words to covey the way her writing cuts me raw and deep. She’s hands down one of the most talented, daring and resourceful writers I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been around for a very long time. A master of short form, her unique and bold style steal my attention right away, her sharp dialogue and unbeatable world building make me sit straighter and forget whatever’s going on around me, her impeccable prose with perfectly chosen and well-placed words takes my breath away, her tender angst makes my heart break for pining Harry, her deliciously explicit, self-indulgent smut make me sweat like a whore in the church 🥵
As if that wasn’t enough, fwooshy’s range is really impressive and she always manages to deliver a long-lasting blow with any genre, any rating and any length, but especially under 3k. Her creative mind, vibrant characters and powerful writing deserve way more recognition and that’s why everyone should go check her catalogue right now. I’ll help you out and share a short selection of goodies below - I could have chosen any 10 fics at random but I wanted to include a little bit of everything, even tropes that aren’t really my jam (hello MCD!)…. unless they’re written by her, lol 🤡 this is actually my second reclist for Fwooshy so I tried to diversify a bit, you can find the previous one here. Silence on the Seventh Floor (T, 970 words) - such a creative and heartbreaking drabble, love this pain-in-the-ass ghost!Draco and smitten Harry, my heart ached so much for them. Cw MCD
Draco haunted the seventh-floor corridor of Hogwarts. A Third Year found him up there one night, knocking the frames together as though trying to shake something out of them. She reported it straight to Headmaster Potter, who passed her a Cockroach Cluster and sent her off to bed with a promise to handle it.
Basement Level 9 (M, 2k) - poignant and disturbing short story with dark!Draco and a resigned Harry who loves him, plus excellent dialogue and a brilliant Ron puzzling the pieces together, ugh so good 😔🤌🏼
Draco was behind the bomb that blew up Level 10, though they didn't talk about it.
You Either Fuck or You Get Fucked (E, 2k) - the ultimate enemies to lovers PWP with scorching hate sex, crude dirty talk and top notch banter, sharp and witty! I’m obsessed with this confident Harry and their sexy push and pull, thought I’d combust on site 🔥
"That's not how fucking works. Fucking's…" Draco waved a hand in the air. "You either fuck or you get fucked." "Sure," Harry said. He took out a Sickle. "Toss for it?" Read my rec here.
10:47 am (T, 2.3k) - this series of short yet immersive slice-of-life vignettes are wonderfully original with vibrant multiple POV and such distinct character voices. One of the fics that best showcase Fwoosh’s genius writing

Big Hands (E, 4.5k) - Victorian AU with pianist rivals, yes please!!!! Incredible world building, delightful and on point humour, unbelievable ust, that basic hand kink we all deserve AND a piano sex scene as a treat, this is rich and sexy and the atmosphere is irresistible
Draco Malfoy is a pianist who's just moved to Paris. Harry Potter, his new roommate, has the biggest hands he's ever seen. Draco is immediately obsessed. Read my rec here.
in a rambling way (T, 7.5k) - probably the softest Fwoosh fic I’ve read so far, a gorgeous and wistful break up make up with lots of pining Harry, camping shenanigans and peak road trip romance. A must read!
Ron knocked Hermione up, and now Harry's got to figure out how to clone himself so that his friends don't split up fighting over him. Falling for Draco again was never part of the plan.

Hermione was afraid of Ginny, because Ginny made her wet.
They Bought A Sports Bar (T, 2.2k) - another compelling femslash because yes, Fwoosh can write pretty much any ship. A fascinating take on Cho and amazing dialogue, love her subtle dynamics with this patient Ginny, and the idea of a sports bar is brilliant!
Ginny buys a sports bar (run-down biker pub, really) and ropes Cho into helping out. They're just business partners, so why does everyone else think they're more?

no worries it's not a silly question!!! we do kind of adopt random headcanons into Widely Accepted Personal Canon at alarming speeds around here so it's VERY understandable to look at the nonsense, look back at canon, and go. why. where. from where did this materialize—
i can't speak for all of the beloved quinn corner but for ME personally it comes from Blankets and Entering by lynne_monstr!!

28. Have you ever tagged a fic “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat”?
No, I haven't. The closest I got was Downpour where I said in the note at the beginning 'Please heed "Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings."' I think it's fun that the Dead Dove tag is named after a meme, but I don't think it's super clear what it means, and given how much discourse I've seen about people misusing or misunderstanding it... I also understand why it exists, but similar to "don't like, don't read" it feels unnecessary to me. If a fic is tagged correctly, it shouldn't need a warning that yes, the author really means it. I don't mind other people using Dead Dove or similar, but I usually choose not to. I have a couple of WIPs where it could apply, and when I post those I won't tag them Dead Dove but I will put a reminder in the notes, like I did with Downpour. I might use Dead Dove on a reclist or a promo post, but I won't tag a fic with it.
29. Share a bit from a fic you’ll never post OR from a scene that was cut from an already posted fic. (If you don’t have either, just share a random fic idea you have that you don’t plan on getting to.)
This is only one cut line but it's the one thing I desperately want to share, so I'll give you the line and some context about the idea. I cut a line from Downpour. The published version is this:
“It’s not your fault, BJ,” Colonel Potter said gently. “It isn’t anyone’s fault.”
“There’s—paperwork,” Margaret choked out. “People that have to be notified. Radar—”
But for a while in the writing process, it went like this:
“It’s not your fault, BJ,” Colonel Potter said gently. “It isn’t anyone’s fault.”
"Maybe it's everyone's fault," Margaret said.
("Said" is a placeholder here, because I never decided exactly what dialogue tag I would use; there probably would have been an adverb.)
The idea behind this is that Margaret is horrified by what happened and blames everyone, including herself, for letting Hawkeye work too hard. Mostly I just heard the line in her voice and really liked it. The reason I cut it is that I thought it would be too cruel for her to say that in that moment, especially in front of BJ, and that she wouldn't do it. Unfortunately, the fic only covers that moment and is strictly from BJ's perspective, so there was no opportunity for her to say it later.
In my head, she does say it later, in one context or another. Maybe a staff meeting, maybe over a drink with Potter. I will never, ever write a sequel to Downpour, because it would defeat the entire point of what I was trying to do. There is no emotional resolution, no catharsis, because that's the point. The reader is left to wonder and guess at how BJ or any of the others deal with what happened. But just because I'm not writing it doesn't mean I haven't thought about it, and one of the things I thought about was Margaret becoming obsessive about shift changes and making sure everyone takes breaks. Of course she accomplishes this by overworking herself.
I'm still kind of sad I didn't get to use the line, but that's what "kill your darlings" means! It didn't serve the overall project so it had to go.
