But the Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls School doesn’t need any air conditioning as its unique sustainable design keeps it cool.
In Jaisalmer, north-west India, just over a third of women and girls can read and write.
Staff at the Rajkumari school - which hosts more than 400 students aged between four and sixteen - hope to improve this alarming statistic.

노란 사암 건축물의 배열로 인해 "황금 도시"로도 알려진 인도 북부의 사막 마을 자이살메르의 기온은 한여름에 약 화씨 120도(섭씨 49도)에 이를 수 있습니다.
여기 건물은 뉴욕 건축가 Diana Kellogg가 Rajkumari 드라마 무빙 토렌트 1화~9화 Ratnavati 여학교에서 그녀의 작업을 따랐던 전통인 열에 적응하도록 오랫동안 설계되었습니다.

Located in the Thar Desert in the north of India, the Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls' School was built to educate and teach over 400 girls between the ages of five and sixteen.
Diana Kellogg Architects explained that the studio looked to symbols of femininity and the nearby sand-dunes to create a fort-like structure that would blend into and grow out of the landscape.

Diana Kellogg Architects Designs an Oval Sandstone School in Northern India (Interior Design, August 2021)
This year, many girls from rural areas around Jaisalmer, a city in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan, will attend school for the first time. They will put on blue uniforms and ride a bus to the Rajkumari Ratnavati Girls’ School, a 10-classroom structure in the Thar Desert. In a region where female infanticide and child marriage are shockingly common, it is remarkable that a school for girls even exists. Yet the building, developed by the American nonprofit organization Citta (Sanskrit for consciousness) and designed by Diana Kellogg Architects, transcends its function. Made almost entirely of hand-carved sandstone blocks, it supports local craftsmen—including some of the girls’ fathers—and proves that heritage architecture can take an elegant modern form.

【建築設計】沙漠女子學校 Rajkumari Ratnavati
為支持及解放印度女性，印度非營利組織「CITTA」就策劃了「The GYANN Center」教育項目，以提升當地女性經濟自主權、提高學齡女孩教育機會，其中位處北方小鎮 Jaisalmer 的「Rajkumari Ratnavati女子學校」是具體建設之一。
鄰近塔爾沙漠的 Rajkumari Ratnavati，請來同樣關注人權及性別議題的紐約工作室「Diana Kellogg Architects」主理建築方案。設計師 Diana Kellogg 以「女性力量」為概念，從印度的地方文化、宗教及倫理背景入手，參考了眾多文化符碼及典藉，最終亦來「橢圓形」及「大地沙色」作為校舍牆身及色彩基調，用以彰顯印度女性「柔中帶剛、隨勢流轉」的頑強生命力。
除形狀似 UFO 的橢圓形校舍， 設計師又大量運用當地盛產的砂岩作為建築物料，結合獨有的手工雕刻技法，保留石材的原質感與紋理，使其形態渾然天成地融入呼應在地的沙漠景緻中。美觀以外，Diana 更關心師生的學習情況，考慮沙漠氣候炎熱乾燥， 因地制宜下，為教室及校舍的牆頂砂岩鑿洞作窗，方便日照溫度飆升時更易散熱，夜幕低垂時又保持通風；校園中央的露天庭院亦縮減寬度，以便安裝天花遮棚擋豔陽；露天迴廊亦鋪上水藍色磁磚，給室內環境注入清新涼意，好讓女性師生們更舒適地上課及遊玩，也獲得療癒的能量。撰文：K.C.
