Instead of My Little Pony, which is a masterpiece well deserving of its fame and popularity among young and old, how about the subversive interest of your hyper-masculine, emo, or just generally not concerned with “frivolous” or “girly” things character is some absolute dogtrash show that nobody likes. Like the Rainbow High webseries.

-Guide to Rainbow High G1.5-
Differences Between G1 and G1.5 dolls:
- There seems to be less of a focus on designer fashion. In leaks, multiple accessories are recolored and reused from other dolls. Not unheard of for fashion dolls but something Rainbow High is not known for doing.
- As far as we know (right now December 2023), Poppy Rowan seems to be cut from the main lineup. This kinda stung. I’m not a big Rainbow High fan (more of a ironic enjoyer) but Poppy was my favorite while watching the webseries. She was the only neurodivergent character (synesthesia) and was overall very cute 🦋💔
- All the main dolls being released in this new gen have forehead glitter. I think it is supposed to make them look more cohesive next to their new pets. I can see this giving ooak customizers some trouble. Along with the forehead glitter, the dolls also have tinsel in their hair (another inconvenience for many collectors and ooaks)
- The elephant in the room, the unicorn/hybrid pets. Based off of the latest webisode and YouTube shorts, these little shits (/j) seem to be a big part of the new series and are going to bring some fantasy elements to the brand (portals, magic eggs, etc.) Whether you find these creatures cute or not is really up to your personal taste and patience lol.
- The slime. The first line of new toys really focuses on slime play and creation. As someone who worked with kids a lot at the peak of the slime trend, I could easily see this going south for sales. Slime is messy, gets in the doll’s hair, is hard to clean up, and very frustrating for parents to deal with. Also collectors of what I’ve seen have little to no interest in the slime too. It could be a hit but I see it affecting the brand more negatively than positively.
- Change of setting. As of the day of posting this, Rainbow high has posted an YouTube short of Sunny jumping through a rainbow portal. Sounds like we might be leaving Rainbow High as a setting. I honestly have no clue where the new series will take place; I’m not too familiar with the “Poopsie Surprise universe”.
- Main character design changes. Amaya (based off of the leaks) has changed the most in fashion and appearance. She now has reverted back to her white and rainbow hair (emphasis on the rainbow). Her clothing is also much more in your face with the rainbow theming. If you are a fan of Amaya in Moschino, don’t worry, she still has a brand inspired bag.
- New webseries. On leaked dolls, there is a sticker “as seen on Rainbow World”. I guess Rainbow World is the name of the new series that will be dropped. It is unsure whether Netflix will pick it up this series like they did with Rainbow High. The webisodes will most likely be posted on the YouTube channel.
- No wrist articulation. Is exactly what it sounds like. The new dolls will not have wrist articulation like the Rainbow Junior High.

Personal Questions and Concerns For the Series:
- What happens to Shadow High? Will any of characters we know come through the portal with the Rainbow High students? Or will they just disappear from the series as a whole?
- Will members of the main cast missing from the leaked line up be included in this new series like Poppy or Bella?
- How much will the doll prices differ?
- What new characters will be introduced in this portal world?
- What will the plot be and how will the show runners keep the world engaging?
- I am concerned about the characterization of the main cast. Rainbow High was relatively grounded before and now with all of these magic elements getting introduced, I’m worried some of the characters might all blend together in order to focus on the pets. Also just general character butchering.

Overall, I just wanted to make this post as a general summary of what is going on with Rainbow High right now as a doll brand. There is a lot of different information and I wanted to throw it all in one place for people who aren’t super up to date on this kinda stuff. This is a kind of doll rebranding you don’t really see everyday and I want to document it.

On that MH fashion topic thing. I've also noticed that many doll lines have gotten this weird relationship to fashion. Barbie seems to get worse and worse, and it's not even fun anymore. Meanwhile a fashion line like Rainbow high, which are pretty detailed, is literally just copying random fashion brands, but not doing a single costume on their own. It's completely lacking in creativity, just on the end of both spectrums: Boring and plain VS copying fashion but change the logo.
I am going to be completely honest.
I have not looked, as in analytically looked, at a baseline Barbie doll in years. Outside of a few special releases that get submitted to me on here (like those fursona-surprise ones), all I know about current baseline Barbie fashion is that it's 'regular modern clothing that anyone can get at a Wal-Mart... with either a stripe of pink on the side, a pink flower, or some matter of the Barbie logo on it'.
And, again, the bulk of my exposure to Rainbow High is watching Negative Legend's videos on the webseries. However, even just watching that I can somewhat see what you're talking about.

i wish rainbow high would stop slapping "RH" and "RAINBOW" and "SPARKLE" on every single piece of clothing they make. like i know that rainbows are their thing, but its starting to make all of the clothes feel super samey to me. i also feel like it sort of waters down (or even ruins) some of the outfit designs, especially the swimsuits for the new beach line.

ooh yes! i do!! here are my top 5:
Out of Breath (Korea, 2019): a short 3-episode mini series about two wlw finding connection. very sweet!
Pearl Next Door (Philippines, 2020): a heartfelt, funny, authentic series about a bi video blogger and the two women she starts developing feelings for. technically a spin-off of gameboys but you don't have to watch gameboys to see this show
Legend of Yunquian (China, 2020): a short-and-sweet low-budget drama about time-traveling lesbian swordswomen. yes. you read that right. it's silly and cute and pretty explicitly queer despite being made in China
Couple of Mirrors (China, 2021): a censored GL series about an assassin and a wealthy novelist/socialite falling in love in 1920s Shanghai. the set design and costumes are SO fun and the main two women have great chemistry!! it might be getting a season 2 as well
Yes or No (Thailand, 2010): a classic for asian lgbt wlw stuff! technically it's a movie but it's still going on this list. enemies to lovers with a side of "and they were roommates!"
and then here are a few more i liked but wouldn't put on my top 5 rec list:
Dear Uranus (Taiwan, 2021): cute 3-episode mini series about a wlw love triangle in a school setting
Lily Fever (Korea, 2015): a very funny but weird webseries about two women who meet under awkward circumstances. it ends on a weird cliffhanger tho, probably bc they ran out of money
I Put the Bi in Bitter (USA, 2018-2019): a web series about a bi high school student and her various slice-of-life shenanigans. the first season isn't... great... but i actually really liked the 2nd and 3rd.
and finally, there's a japanese movie called Until Rainbow Dawn about two deaf lesbians created by a deaf cast and crew and i haven't watched it yet but i've heard nothing but good things, so i think it's probably worth checking out as well!

To think I could've lived all my life without ever feeling the need to get a single Rainbow High doll untill MGA decided to fuck me over by releasing Wave 3 and the Slumber Party set... SO!!
RAINBOW HIGH PROJECTS 🌈
Brianna Dulce - the first RH doll to actually get my attention was Kia Hearts. I loved the idea of a "lovecore" doll, with the dark skin/brown eyes combo being a big plus. I ended up not getting her because I'm annoyingly cheap and didn't want to pay for shipping on top of the already 50$. I'm more confident that they'll sell the Slumber Party set in stores here in my country tho. She'll have no major modifications, I just want to giver her brown eyes and turn her into a goldfish Kia ◉‿◉ (her outfits will also be great for some of my other dolls)
Daphne Minton - I love her color and outfits. I love her screening and face sculpt. She's perfect and yet I kept giving myself reasons not to buy her. Until I saw it: a brunette reroot of Daphne. I don't think anyone could ever understand how much I need this doll in my life. I need her ◉‿◉🔪
Sheryl Meyer - I think I only ever watched 3 eps of RH's webseries because, once in while, a cartoon will come and just hit home how a 20 year old really isn't the target demographic for a show made only to sell toys to children (EAH spoiled me rotten). Anyway, from all the background characters, Sheryl was the one I was most excited to see as an actual doll because I'm basic like that. And when she finally came out in all her glorious thick, straight, dark eyebrows and overdrawn lips I finally understood what truely loving someone meant. I have no plans for her, I'll keep her as she is ( ˘ ³˘)💛

I'd love to one day make 2 of my ocs using a RH base too. Technically I could do them already using Marisa Golding and Vanessa Tempo considering how they already have pretty much the exact skintones and eye colors I need. But spending all that money on dolls I'd need to reroot and wipe all of their facepaint off? Yeaaah, no. I guess Georgia Bloom could work for one of them but I'd prefer to see her in person before I make the call.
I sooooo hope Rainbow High's quality plummets from here on out cause my wallet can't take this many hits ಥ_ಥ🌈
