~ Bundle of Hair Extensions.
Date: ca. 2114-1502 B.C.
Period: Old Kingdom-early New Kingdom; 16th-18th Dynasty
Medium: Human hair, linen
▪︎ From the source: These hair extensions would have been placed in a tomb for use in the afterlife. In this world, Egyptians used extensions to make their wigs or natural hair thicker and more attractive, just as people do today. The reliefs in this case show hairdressers adding extensions like these to the hair or wig of Queen Neferu.

I’ve made a degree (graphic design) earlier this year and it was an app with illustrations and biographies of historical women. Here’s queen Tiye: (also I’m still proud of these illustrations, but I’m happy with the progress I’ve made since creating them)

Queen Tiye’s hair is so pretty. Wow. Humankind is so weird and humans are even weirder. Someone decided to preserve a body and then… someone figured out how to do it. And now we have this beautiful piece of history in the form of a mummified woman.
I mean look!
Tumblr media
She died at age 40-50 and was 145 cm (4 ft 9 in) tall. She was also the first Egyptian queen to have her name recorded on official acts.
Oh, and by the way she was the grandmother of Tutankhamun.
Idk I hope someone finds this interesting too. ✌️

TIYE // QUEEN OF EGYPT
“She was the Great Royal Wife of Amenhotep III and grandmother of pharaoh Tutankhamun. Her husband devoted a number of shrines to her and constructed a temple dedicated to her in Sedeinga in Nubia where she was worshipped as a form of the goddess Hathor-Tefnut. She regularly appeared besides Amenhotep III in may different statues, tombs etc. She wielded a great deal of power during both her husband’s and son’s reigns. She became her husband’s trusted adviser and confidant.”

Tiye’s mummy tells us she died between the age of 40 and 50. This was determined by study of the bones and teeth. Interestingly, the CT-scans of Tiye’s mummy revealed something that we would not have been able to fathom before the progress of the sciences: Tiye’s mummy has missing wisdom teeth!
“All of the wisdom teeth are missing except the right maxillary one, which shows a fractured root. There is a space for the other three missing wisdom teeth in the jaws, which denotes that they were present at one time during life.” (Hawass, Saleem, D’Auria, 2018) This is really amazing insight into Ancient Egyptian dental and medical care. To think they were removing wisdom teeth 3000+ years ago is just astounding.
